e are very pleased and grateful to God for the recognition that our magazine has achieved in such a short time. Recently, we were nominated for the “Premio Orgullo Peruano 2015,” (2015 Peruvian Pride Award), which will be held in Lima, Peru, and where many ceremonial protocol on behalf of Real Concepts Magazine activities will take place. The one that most caught my my heart and mind is called, “Leave Me a Memory,” which involves spending time with a child from a very impoverished place. We will tell you how it went in the next issue.

The content of this edition has very interesting articles that will touch the most sensitive part of you, such as Dr. Maria C. Regueiro’s “Stop Human Trafficking,” which you can’t miss! We need to educate more people on this topic to help combat it. The authorities need our assistance, as does our community. In addition, on the cover we have Maria Mercedes Becerra with the Just Between Us Foundation (Fundacion Entre Nosotras). When I met her, she felt very familiar, and I identified with her immediately. The more I learned about what she does, the more I wanted to share her with you. Here is a strong woman who has helped abused women and children all her life, and even now continues to support our community with the strength and passion of a teenager. Thank you very much to all of you who nourish our magazine with its educational and inspirational articles! Finally, I leave you with this thought: Do not let discouragement, frustration and pessimism touch your mind. After experiencing an episode of betrayal or disappointment, there are people who, whenever the film plays on the screen of their mind, simply pull up a chair, grab popcorn, and return to see the whole movie again and again. Forgive, and get away from it soon. Always remember that the Manual of Life, the Bible, says: real
“Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.” Proverbs 17:9

Our honoree was the Apostle Duane Swilley, on the cover, who said he believed that this magazine and its vision will be a pioneer in bringing the Word to the desert. We were also honored with a visit from the General Consul of Peru, Ambassador Enrique Bustamante, and his distinguished wife, Mrs. Mara de Bustamante. On this beautiful night, Ambassador Bustamante said that South Florida deserves to have such a good means of communication as this, to help us interact with the community, and that if it acted as a bridge to the Anglo world, it could help us achieve our goal to come to this country and become a strong population that adds rather than subtracts. Also present were Mr. Alfred Santamaria, Mrs. Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, and Mrs. Rocio Navarrete, who drove all the way from Fort Myers, among other great guests. Marivi Britto, brilliant producer and host of the Radio 106.3FM La Nueva acted as master of ceremonies, with the assistance of Cecilia Montesinos Richter, educator, translator and editor of our magazine. Together they conducted the program in a masterful way. Miss USA Intercontinental, Kassandra Montandon, was crowned, we enjoyed many gifts and beautiful voices during the event, and of course, the stunning IMPERIO 2015 collection by international fashion designer, Maritza Sanchez Guevara.

Escape to True Freedom BY: DEB SLATER
S
amantha is a beautiful woman, who some years ago was abused physically and emotionally by her husband. She tells her story of slavery to drugs, alcohol and pornography, and the escape from their confinement, into which she had slowly entered by her own will. Now her story is used as a powerful testimony to tell other women who are going through the same thing, that, yes! It is possible to exit this situation, when we open up our arms and reach for the grace of God. Since then, with the truth exposed, we started doing it together. At first, I felt loved and protected by him. Inadvertently, we walked further in our addiction. It was not just drugs, but alcohol, pornography and marijuana. I became so dependent on drugs that I needed pills to be able to sleep, and God took care of me so that I didn’t crash, because I would drive to work practically unconscious. I was blinded by love for this man. He was the air I breathed. He not only abused me emotionally, saying I was fat, disgusting or stupid, so I had to hide to eat not to bother him, but also abused me physically. When we were drugged and I would lose my temper and begin a fight, he would get
mad and hit me. During that time, I had to cover my bruises creatively so that my sister did not see them; my love for him was sick and toxic. He had become my god. That night, a person who worked there told me that death does not always come from an overdose of drugs consumed in one night. This stayed in my mind for a while. When I was discharged from that hospital, I wanted to leave my husband and quit drugs, but I thought that if I did, I would die or go crazy. I was totally dependent on him. One Sunday, my sister invited me to a church. I did not believe in God but upon entering the place, God spoke to me through the pastor of that church. He stopped his preaching and said: “Here is a woman who carries a broken heart, God wants to restore that heart and give her a new one, a heart of flesh. She does drugs and alcohol and takes pills to sleep.” I was stunned! He meant me! I walked to the altar weeping and opened my heart to Christ. When I came back home, I did not find my husband. He had gone to see his lover, a woman 20 years younger than him. She had just arrived in this country and danced in a bar as a stripper. I already knew that because I saw her exactly as she was in a dream. So I drank until I fell asleep. I started dreaming. In that dream I had a vessel in my hands, and in it there was a heart covered with blood. Hundreds of skin-colored snakes came out of my body, covered with blood, and my door was covered with blood too. I woke up and asked the Lord Jesus to give me strength. On Monday, after work, I was entering my home when I saw a man sitting and smoking, but I couldn’t smell the snuff. He had intense green eyes, the color of a glass bottle. I looked at him, but did not pay attention to him, and entered into my house. I started drinking again and called my sister to come for me. Then, something terrible happened: I felt I was being pushed from one

Do you think these dry bones can come to life?, asked God to Ezekiel once; He asks the same question to us every single day, He asks it to the depressive, the unemployed , the drug addicts, the alcoholics , the murderers ...Do you think these dry bones could come to life? There is no exact mathematical formula to overcome an addiction or a bad lifestyle, therapies can take decades and one is always exposed to having a “bad day” and putting everything down again. However, there is another way. When we are at our most critical point, when our wrong lifestyle has made us hit the bottom, it is when our heart asks for help, but not by our mouth or our mind. The heart has to be the spokesperson of our necessity because it is only then that it really wants to change. God hears the repentant heart and, with an army of people fighting for you on their knees, He again asks you: Do you think these dry bones can come to life? EDUARDO PEREZ- SLATER
wall to another so intensely, that I finally passed out. Twenty minutes later, I was awakened by knocking on my door: it was my sister. When she entered, she said she felt a lot of oppression, so she began to pray loudly in a language I didn’t understand. She explained that she was interceding with God in the language that the Holy Spirit gave us. When she finished, we went to the front door and there were three men dressed in black, walking in circles. Both of us saw them clearly. A few days later, I had another dream. I saw the same man who had been smoking in front of my house sitting in a cemetery. When I woke up, I knew God was showing me that the guy was a demon lurking my house. Some years have passed, and now I attend a church. I am restored, I have a heart of flesh that feels love and compassion for others. I give this testimony in women’s conferences to help others and as a service to my God, who rescued me by opening the doors of the prison in which I lived. I left the man who was my husband. I didn’t kill myself or go crazy, and I’ve forgiven him heartily. I found the girl who used to be with him on Facebook. She received Christ as her Lord and Savior, and now she serves God. I now am the result of the prayers of my sister who prayed and interceded for me every day. Her prayers were answered.

ust share the same space with Anthony, “El Angel Trovador” (The Troubadour Angel), and you will realize that you are in the presence of a magnificent human being of surprising nuance, and that you are about to experience brilliance. Anthony was born to a humble family with a deformed cleft lip and suffering from Hydrocephalus. Despite his illness, from a young age it was his dream to perform onstage and share his art with the public, even against his doctors’ advice. All his life he poured the pain of his problems into his music, and recounts, “Singing was always my best companion - the only way to shake off the bad times.” Over the years Anthony has matured into a solid performer, a ballad singer at heart, who has had international hits performing all types of music. He loves his followers, who in turn adore his humility as much as his enormous talent for performing songs masterfully. He is an artist who has been called Miami’s BestKept Secret, because once you discover him, you cannot let him go. His name is recognizable in Spain, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica and Argentina, among other countries. When asked about his ambitions, Anthony smiles, raises his eyes to heaven and answers, “Only God knows my destiny.” Bestowing his art upon us with pure dedication and devotion, he believes that the rest is divine bidding. In spite of his fame and recognition, he continues to organize and participate in benefit concerts for the sick and needy, all

MISSIONS/FOUNDATIONS
Autism Soccer BY: DEB SLATER
A
utism Soccer (AS) was founded in 2013 by Oscar Rolando Amuz , a former football player of second division. AS, is a nonprofit organization, 501 (c) 3, which teaches the fundamental skills of soccer to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability. We briefly interviewed its founder, Oscar Amuz, a man full of hope and faith in humanity. What is Autism Soccer? It is a foundation where we focus on teaching children and adults with autism and special disabilities fundamentals of soccer in a friendly atmosphere with a wide human support. We help our athletes to develop the love to exercise while having fun. Through Autism Soccer (AS) children learn that with training, self-esteem and love, everything is possible. Tell us a bit more about what is Autism ? Autism, called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has common symptoms that include difficulty with communication and social interaction, obsessive interests and repetitive behaviors. Early recognition and educational family behavioral therapies can reduce symptoms and support the development and learning. The Autism cannot be cured, but treatment can help. On March 27, 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new data on the prevalence of autism in the United States. This surveillance study identified 1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls) as having autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This new estimate is roughly 30% higher than the estimate for 2008 (1 in 88), 60% higher than the estimate for 2006 (1 in 110), and 120% higher than the estimates for 2000 and 2002 (1 in 150).CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network data show that the estimated number of children identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continues to rise. Boys were almost 5 times more likely to be identified with ASD than girls; OCTOBER 2015 • Real Concepts Magazine
white children were still more likely to be identified with ASD than afro american or Hispanic children; and most children with ASD were diagnosed after age 4, even though ASD can be diagnosed as early as age 2.
Autism prevalence growing in U.S. One in 68 U.S. children is believed to have autism or a related disorder, according to the latest estimate-a 30 percent jump from the 2012 federal estimate.

What can we expect to find in Autism Soccer? In Autism Soccer, we have been working with children with autism spectrum disorders for a long time and suddenly one day I had the opportunity to work with children with different special needs. I’m surprised by the speed with which they have learned the exercises and the enthusiasm and passion shown in playing this sport. My experience has been beyond anything I could have imagined! The support of parents exceeded my expectations. Their love, patience and humanity are nothing less than pure excellence. Our program not only teaches the fundamental skills of soccer, but also promotes self-confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship. In addition, practicing soccer drills, increases the fine and gross motor skills, which are often weak in people with special needs. Communication and social skills, including

Foundation the ability to follow directions, take turns, and be considerate to the comrades are practices that are part of each session. Our goal is that our team members can learn football skills in a supportive environment; to develop a love for life to exercise, avoid obesity and to have fun. In addition, through the foundation, we are teaching young people the importance of giving back to the community and are also learning that people with special needs can have a big impact and help others and that nothing is impossible as long as you have a dream. Our Soccer Autism Program is registered and approved by the Special Olympics of Florida and will be designed as a preparation for the summer program with Special Olympics. I understand that you have a football superstar in AS, tell us who is he? We are honored to have Mr. Ruben Sosa, now retired and great soccer player, who played in different clubs around the world with great success, as well as the Uruguay national team. He started his career when he was just 15 years old at Danubio (Uruguay) and was in the most important clubs in soccer world as Real Zaragoza (Spain), Lazio (Italy), Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund (Germany), then returned to Spain with CD LOGROÑÉS and finally achieved his dream of playing for the National. “The Little Prince” his nickname, is known for its many medals but perhaps the most important is the love he has for children, he immediately agreed to be our ambassador in Uruguay and Latin America and we are very proud to have him in Autism Soccer. This will give us more presence and help us to have more resources to continue our mission. What would be your message to the community to support you in this beautiful and noble mission We are expanding and we need to know where the need is to train and develop programs for all children and adults with physical and mental desabilities. We need opportunities to get into clubs, Indoor Soccer fields and also need coaches who are interested in expanding their experiences for the benefit of all our athletes.
We have a short testimony of a father (Mr.Jorge Hamoui) who has seen improvement in his son after attending the Autism Soccer Program. “My son Jacob is autistic and he already has about one year going to soccer classes with coach Oscar Amuz and the Autism Soccer Foundation. At the beginning I had many doubts, because Jacob was very inactive, with little encouragement and slow to follow routines imposed by the coach. After a year, I can tell we see the result. Jacob has more skill to run, is more consistent to the indications of the coach and this has even helped him grow in socializing with others. There should be more programs like this in South Florida, this is a program that really helps children with this condition and the coach is very patient and dedicated to them.” Jorge Hamoui (tabirni@hotmail.com)

Bryan hopes that his paintings will be recognized and admired by many people. Bryan loves to paint and has been working with his art teacher, Lee Cohen, for three years, in perfecting his favorite technique: collage. Teacher Cohen says that it is often difficult to work with someone who has mood swings and obsessive repetitions, but she feels rewarded when she sees the happiness on this young man’s face as they view his finished work. Bryan likes to celebrate his finished work like every other artist. Bryan, like any other boy on his age, enjoy to participates in various organizations that provide support to children with autistim spectrum disorder and their parents. One example, California Surfers Healing Foundation and its director, Steering Izzy, helps children like Bryan and their families to enjoy a day full of sea therapy and surfing with their parents and siblings completely for free. aria Mercedes is a passionate, tireless and unrelenting woman. She is not the product of addictions or physical abuse at home, but God had a mission for her, and gave her parents who would embed her heart with the concept of a strong family. That was the impulse behind her calling to restore women and children who have suffered abuse. We visited her at the foundation “Entre Nosotras,” which she established in Homestead, where peace and joy are apparent the moment you enter. Walking through the spacious hall, you’re greeted by butterfly paintings, the symbol of the foundation. These paintings are the artwork of recovered victims of abuse. There are also photographs with celebrities like Ricardo Montaner, El Puma, Marcos Witt, Alex Campos, and Rashel Díaz, amongst others. With an innate humility, this professional woman with a Master’s in theology and a Doctorate in Clinical Counseling, received us with open arms, making us feel a part of her family. How do you obtain that cherished balance between your busy life as Counselor for Dade County, your Foundation in Homestead, and your family? All my life I have been a hard worker and a dedicated student, however, I do give time to my rest. When I arrive home, my husband and I take time to be together, be it to walk the dogs, go to the theater, or enjoy a good movie. We have understood our marriage is the basis for our success as professional individuals. When was “Fundación Entre Nosotras” born? In the year 2002, through a radio program called “Entre Nosotras.” Three friends of mine, decided to form the foundation, and I began to take the first steps as a volunteer. I already had my certifications as a counselor issued by the Florida Certifications Board. Then women who had suffered abuse, felt depressed, and without strength began to call, and that it is where the counseling area of “Fundación Entre Nosotras” was born. I was involved from the beginning. Do you only accept women for counseling? At the beginning, yes, which is why it was called “Entre Nosotras” (amongst us women), but after a while, men began to complain, asking why we were discriminating them. So five years ago we created “Club Aquí Entre Nos,” (Club Here Amongst Us), for men, which is directed by my husband Carlos, and he deals with their issues. I do not participate there as a counselor, but I do give support by serving refreshments when they have their meetings. We have a Christian counselor who comes to give them support, because they also suffer domestic violence and abuse, and they need to be raised in their purpose as head of the family.

We also take care of children, although the majority are girls. We have an Elementary Preventative Program for girls 5 to 11 years old, and another one for girls 12 to 18 who have been abused. Also schools, institutions and churches that have learned about the Foundation bring me girls who need help. Here, they participate in a program for nine weeks, and on the tenth week they receive a diploma. They learn about family, friends, community, the church, their body, and mind, and the lessons are very interactive. Those who are older take another course where we talk to them about sexuality, “sexting” and everything else. With access to technology, social networks and the bombardment of sexuality through the media, children are more exposed than at the time we were young. Do you think cases of this type of abuse as a product of this freedom that they have now? Yes, and it is closely related to human trafficking through the social networks, where men and women recruit children. There are men between 45 and 50 years old who begin to chat with these children by saying that they are the same age, and once they have their trust, inviting them for ice cream, for example, telling them they can come with their mother. They do this to learn the family patterns. It is extremely important that parents are monitoring what children watch on the Internet. Speaking of human trafficking, ¿have you dealt in therapy with people who have endured this terrible experience? Yes, unfortunately we recently had a teenager and a 20-yearold who had been sex slaves. Here in Miami, since the age of 13, little girls are sold as sexual objects and forced to have sex with two, three or four men. I form part of a Task Force against human trafficking, and provide counseling in order to give them that hug, and love, because these women are scarred, and if they are not helped, they will be for life. I do think there is restoration through Christ. I have always thought that only He gives us that grace, especially to me, a mature person, so that girls open their hearts and tell me what happened, and I can give them the specific help they need. I tell them that God was always there, protecting them from being killed, and even though they cannot understand why He did not prevent the hurt, I tell them with love that God has a purpose in the life of each of them, so that they can become a testimony for each other. Do you think there is a way one person can identify that human trafficking is occurring? Of course! They work as a network of people that are always looking for “hire” the little girlfriend and they give her the new model of cellular so she (happy with her new phone) can enroll
other children. There are warning signs that they are being used by these criminals: they have bruises in their bodies or wear long clothes to cover up bruises, when they had previously worn skirts and shorts pants. Another signal is hiding tablets or phones from parents; there is also the controlling boyfriend that asks them for the love test, which is now cybernetic, called “sexting,” or a photograph of a girl’s private parts, sent to the boy through a text message, which he then posts it on the internet and receives money for it. The person who sells cocaine sells only to one, but human trafficking is lucrative because, just like pornography, they can sell that picture to more than one person, most of the times for sexual purposes, making millions of dollars. Your husband is a good support in your life. We have seen how the flame of love is still alive between you two My husband values and respects what I do, and that is essential in a relationship: mutual respect and admiration. Even if we have an argument, because my temper is more passionate, he supports me, and tells me I am his volcano, and he is my little water of the well. We have been together more than 13 years, and thanks to our God, we are still like in our honeymoon. How is your relationship with God? Very strong, and it is the main part of my life. I do not go out of the house if I do not spend time with him. I dedicate 45 to 60 minutes to be with Him, praising Him, worshipping Him, reading his word, placing my children, my husband and my work in his hands. Walking with Christ sometimes it is not easy, but it is safe. This is the secret of my success, because His word says that when you seek him in privacy, he will exalt you in public. And this is what He has done for me! Real Concepts Magazine • OCTOBER 2015

CALL TO ACTION!
No
Human Trafficking BY: DR. MARÍA CRISTINA REGUEIRO President/CEO-Florida National University
Let’s come together as One Voice and One Community to Eradicate Human Trafficking
H
uman Trafficking is indeed a malady that is affecting not only Florida, but our entire world. More often than not, our news media outlets are constantly reporting that young girls and in several instances boys, are being trafficked, meaning bought, sold, and traded in a heartbeat. How can this continue to happen in the 21st Century? No one really knows, but we can speculate, that if there continues to be a high demand for victims of human trafficking, then criminals will make sure that their buyers’ needs will be met. As appalling as it may sound, Human Trafficking is also known as Modern Day Slavery. Usually, when we refer to this perverse conduct, we are signaling out three main components: Sex Trafficking, Labor Trafficking and Organ Trafficking. When we hear the term Sex trafficking, we automatically know that a profitable sex act is being brought upon a victim by force and deceitfulness from the Human Trafficker to perform sexual actions. This is also known as sexual exploitation. Unfortunately, the average victim in several cases may be forced to have sex up to 20-48 times a day, as noted by the Polaris Project. What makes matters even worse, is that a Trafficker can make anywhere from $150,000-$200,000 per child victim each year, as verified by the U.S. Justice Department, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. On the other hand, Labor Trafficking is also an alarming felonious doing. These victims are without a doubt, being subjugated to work long hours and not even get paid for their services or have any access to their earnings. They are not treated as human beings, but rather as means to the traffickers’ ends. Lastly, Organ Trafficking is also a ghastly crime! Victims are either forced to give up one of their OCTOBER 2015 • Real Concepts Magazine
organs for sale, or they are even maliciously treated for a disease that they do not have, and that is when the trafficker makes his/her move to get the supposedly ill organ removed, and consequently, sold for a hefty price. On October 8th, Florida National University, the Dr. Jose Regueiro Scholarship Foundation, Inc. and the POWERHOUSE Human Trafficking Steering Planning Committee, will host a Human Trafficking Awareness Symposium entitled: “Prevention, Apprehension and Rehabilitation.” This symposium will take place at Florida National University’s Hialeah Campus -4425 W. Jose Regueiro (20th) Avenue beginning at 6:30 p.m. We want to invite the public at large to attend this very significant free event, in an effort to show a Community CALL TO ACTION, to STOP Human Trafficking not only in Florida, but throughout our Global Domain! Let’s be part of the solution and learn what are the clear indicators of SOMEONE that is a victim of Human Trafficking, and consequently, by recognizing the characteristics, we may be saving their life. «GMO»?
D
id you know that most of the foods that you and your family consume are GMO!! GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. (definition by nongmoproject.org) A genetically modified organism (GMO), also known as a transgenic organism, is any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. GMOs are the source of genetically modified foods and are also widely used in scientific research and to produce goods other than food. The term GMO is very close to the technical legal term, ‘living modified organism’, defined in the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which regulates international trade in living GMOs (specifically, “any living organism that possesses a novel combination of genetic material obtained through the use of modern biotechnology”).(definition by Wikipedia) There are different opinions related to the subject, many believe GMO’s to be unhealthy, The American Academy of

Environmental Medicine (AAEM) urges doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients. They cite animal studies showing organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, and infertility. Human studies show how genetically modified (GM) food can leave material behind inside us, possibly causing long-term problems. Genes inserted into GM soy, for example, can transfer into the DNA of bacteria living inside us, and that the toxic insecticide produced by GM corn was found in the blood of pregnant women and their unborn fetuses. Others believe GMO’s to be as good as non-GMO foods in our market. Foods made from GM crops have the same nutritional value as foods made from non-GM crops, whether it’s protein, fat, fiber, oil or carbohydrates. The only exception is some GM crops that are being developed to provide more nutrition like “Golden Rice” with more Vitamin A, which it’s hoped can help reduce Vitamin A deficiency in the developing world.(discover.monsanto.com) Now that we understand better the definition for GMO, we can comprehend what is happening around us and we have the opportunity to choose what is best for our children and families.

Oral Hygiene W
ith the passing of years, most people show great concern for overall aesthetics so smiles acquire special importance. Since they are the first thing that is evident when you see someone’s face, you cannot neglect them. Oral hygiene is a very important aspect of enhancing the smile. However, hygienic care is not only a question of aesthetics, it helps us decisively in the prevention and treatment of any oral disease as well as the maintenance of healthy teeth and any prosthetic attachment, such as crowns or porcelain veneers, etc, - common treatments to improve dental aesthetics. Failure or neglect of oral hygiene can lead to, among other conditions, three very prevalent diseases including dental decay, gingivitis and periodontitis (which we will detail in future volumes). These conditions can seriously compromise oral aesthetics, spoil any prosthesis that we have in our teeth (crowns or porcelain veneers, etc.), adversely affect oral functions (talking, chewing), and impact our overall health.

Without prompt treatment, the diseases described above can become serious infections that can jeopardize a patient’s health. According to The Cochrane Collaboration (an independent global organization that summarizes health-related research and produces systematic reviews) we have assumed that the removal of dental plaque prevents gum disease (gingivitis) and tooth decay. For this reason, we must use the brush, floss, and other hygienic tools in a correct way to completely remove bacterial plaque.

How to Apply for College Scholarships? BY: LUIGI VALDIVIESO
T
he first step towards winning a scholarship is to apply for it. It is often said that one should apply early and apply often. Missing a deadline and applying late will send your application to the bottom of the pile. Everyone you ask will have own pointers for a good scholarship application. You will get a range of advice like what extra-curricular activities to choose to which words to use to highlight your scholarship application form. But the question is how to put it all together? (Scholarships, 2013). You should be assured that the scholarship rewards the applicants who put best efforts. Scholarship judges easily recognize poorly composed applications. The financial assistance you get through scholarships is beneficial even if you don’t receive an award for every scholarship you apply. Most of the students earn scholarship for two reasons (Financial Aid, 2013). 1) They meet the criteria specified by the sponsor. 2) The applicants are selective in the pursuit of scholarship opportunities and approach the application process in a strategic manner (Financial Aid, 2013).
Make a list It is actually simple having no magical recipe. You just gather information about all the scholarships offers that you are qualified to apply for. Focus your attention on those awards and eliminate others. Assess each individual opportunity This will help your investment to pay off. Consider the following aspects • Deadline of the scholarship • How long you will take to prepare for the award? • Consider the amount of the award Prioritize your opportunities Create a rating system based on the above mentioned categories. Begin applying As now you will have feasible and short list to apply, start submitting your scholarship application in the order which ranks highest in your priority. Parents Involved in School
Raise Successful Children BY: MONICA OGANES Neuropsychologist & School Psychologist

he school year is in full swing. As parents, we want our children to have a successful year with optimal learning. What can we do to ensure the academic success of our children? Learning is sequential and it is difficult for children to learn new material if they do not know basic skills. Teachers should use research-based instruction and follow the curriculum with fidelity, teaching grade-level skills while targeting learning gaps. Through frequent formative assessment, teachers can evaluate if the students are learning. How would moving on to the next lesson be beneficial if the majority of students have not learned the lesson of the day? The group’s progress should be measured before measuring individual progress. It is important for parents to become the teachers’ allies and talk to them about instruction and curriculum when children are not learning. Parents should have knowledge about the assessment and progress monitoring plans used for academic success. Being involved in what is happening at school increases the likelihood of satisfactory progress. When the academic difficulties persist, it is necessary to consult with a school psychologist and determine whether

the problems are based on instructional practice or actual disabilities in children. For instance, the specialist can find out if the difficulty is due to second language learning, attention problems, specific learning disabilities or any other disability, which may require special education. A psychoeducational evaluation can guide in the development of appropriate academic and behavioral intervention plans. Education leads to better opportunities and a better quality of life. As parents, we should actively participate in the education of our children so that they are successful in life!

FASHION
Fall-Winter 2015-2016
Fashion Tips A

utumn is here and it brings many suggestions to the season. After analyzing the trends for this fall, I have selected some that I think are the most fashionable, but be careful to only use and adapt those that go with your style and enhance your figure. Straight and zig-zag lines: Linear patterns are strongly this season and can be great allies to enhance your figure. If you have a round figure, try using only vertical or diagonal lines that are in the center, as they visually help your figure. If, however, you’re very thin, you can make your figure look more plump if you opt for the horizontal lines, as these visually widen your body. Returning the 60’s: Miniskirts and boots typical of the decade of the 60’s are back this fall, but watch out with this trend. If you are thin and have long legs, then you can wear miniskirts and boots without worrying too much. But if you are short or have thick legs, I would advise you to wear boots a little lower than the height of half your calves because the cut usually shortens the length of the legs, you may also use stockings or leggings of the same color of your skin creating an effect that visually lengthen your legs and combine them with not so short miniskirts. Inspiration in nature: The nature-inspired prints are a classic fall. Whether is flowers, butterflies or natural designs, this kind of prints will give a romantic touch. I advise you to enhance your figure, take into account the size of the print. If you are short, opt for small prints; but if you are tall, large prints will favor you more. Animal print: animal inspiration is also very in style this fall and winter season is ideal for highlighting specific areas of our body. For example, if you have a small chest and want to make it look larger, animal print shirt will add volume to that area of your body; the same applies to different areas of the body such as the hips and legs.

Eric Abidal:
The BARCA Power BY: EDUARDO PEREZ SLATER eduardo@realconceptsmagazine.com
W
hen we talk about FC Barcelona, which has impressed the world for the second time since the “dream team” of Johan Cruyft, we speak of extraordinary players, from the great trainer that created a team capable to pass the ball in small spaces all around the field at a supersonic speed to drive their opponents crazy to an Argentinian able to make the impossible possible, a talent that only God could produce. But there were other elements in that Barcelona, conqueror of every tittle in its way and the owner of famous tiki –taka style, elements like a goalkeeper who never wanted to be a goalie but ended up being one of the best in the world, defenders able both to quit playing back smartly as running 200 minutes to ensure that the match ended with its victory, midfielders who pause/ play the game when they felt like it and forwards that, we did not know for sure if they were really forwards or midfielders. The Barca of Guardiola was a soccer beautiful spectacle. But, there was a player on that team full of glory and championships, a player who inspired many not only inside the soccer field but outside also, someone who stood bravely against cancer and said the same thing he told his opponents when defending: “not around here!” . With the number 22 stamped on the back of his jersey, Eric Abidal showed us that the fight against cancer can be won not only once but twice. Abidal was tactically, a perfect player, a defender able to play both as a winger or at center back, he could “read” the game very well and his physical power gave him that extra muscle and strength every team defense needs it. However, he was not the most talented one of the great Barca that won everything, but he was the bravest of that winning team, the one who had crazy passion to play the most beautiful game and the one who most inspired the Blaugrana fans. In his fourth season at the catalan team, in March 2011 and at 31 years old, Eric went to a routine checkup and was

told he had cancer, it was overwhelming, because he was a professional athlete which means that your health should be 200%, but for many, cancer is not so much physical but mostly emotional, it’s like an intruder that gets into your house, stealing your security and peace. Abi, as he is known by their peers in Barcelona, underwent an operation and with the end of the “Champions League” knocking at the door and his coach and teammates encouraging a fast recovery, Eric returned to play in just 71 days after the surgery and won the most important fight of his life. Then, he returned to play the most important game in his soccer career at Wembley stadium and against an English team. Not only he won but it was he who finally lifted the “big ears cup” for the world to see. Now, if cancer is part an emotional thing, Eric confronted it with another emotion, a powerful one: his passion to play football. But cancer wanted a rematch in the battle field against Abidal and returned, this time more aggressive than before. This time a liver transplant was needed to win this rematch, Dani Alves, the talented and eccentrically Brazilian winger and good friend of Eric, volunteered to be his donor but Abi did not accept it, it was not fair to his friend to undergo this operation, which would leave him months out of a soccer field; Eric’s cousin, Gerald also offered and it was with him that Abi fought and beat cancer for the second time. This time it took 13 months for a full recovery and after almost one year without playing, Eric Abidal returned to the Barcelona stage with a monumental cheer, and played for the team he loved and in front of all the people who were on his side in the battles against cancer. Possibly Marcel Desailly and Lilian Thuram are still the best defense France has seen until now, they have something incredible to tell when they describe what was the 1998 World Cup; but there is another defender who has another

The club of FC Barcelona has an infinite number of stars; shining stars that, no matter how far we are from them, we all admire and observe. But there is one star in this Catalan club that got a second chance in life and when hope seemed to be fading, he shined brighter than ever for everyone to see.
story to tell, an equally amazing story and perhaps more motivating and moving, a story that will most likely pass from generation to generation in the Masia, the Barcelona youth system; from Barca parents to his children around the world, a beautiful story told and discussed in French cafes, something that will live on despite the time between soccer fans, it will be like a story that you tell your children before bedtime . It is the story of Eric Abidal and his biggest triumph: his double victory over cancer. It is the story of how a brave French footballer of Lyon overcame a battle, that very few win, to return to play soccer at the highest level. Definitely, the gifted player and all the heroes who beat cancer, fill us with strength and motivates us in pursuit of our most difficult dreams. Several messages of support were seen and heard in the Camp Nou stadium, home of FC Barcelona, one of them, summarized it all: “Abi, your fight is our strength”.

hy did you decide to become a performer? Following that, how committed are you to society? It’s not something I decided. I just accepted it with love. At the age of three, I sang and recorded songs. At that age, nobody decides anything; you are what you are. Over time, I realized the responsibility I had, and worked to become the best musician that I could be. I have a big commitment to society, and have used my artistic platforms to delve deeply into complex matters related to pro-life campaigns, among others. What is the main contribution your music makes? How would you describe it? My music is both the most personal and public part of my testimony as a human being. The main contribution is my vision of a more emphatic life. It gives me great satisfaction to have given the world over 200 stories, with melodies that range from the most romantic, and positive, to those gray moments that also form part of our journey.

What do you believe in? In God, in myself, and in the strengthening power of healing throughout love in all fields and manifestations. Who do you admire and why? Jesus of Nazareth. I follow his teachings beyond the universal figure that I had heard about from everyone. When I began to live his legacy and presence in my personal experience, and not the way people told me I had to, I started being a better Christian. I think that I used to lose myself in religion, which is why I chose to look for a relationship with God, and not just any religion itself. That can also be found in my latest songs. A moment that may have changed your outlook on life? I think the most important was when I reconciled with Jesus of Nazareth. It was a time of detailed recalibration in my life. I stopped living with my girlfriend, and she became my wife. I stopped distracting myself with religion and deepened my relationship with God. My music was also affected. What I most wish for my audience is that they experience that personal encounter themselves. No matter how much you hear other witness, there are never words to describe the immensity of that moment.

Sowing Second Chances BY: LYNDSAY PHILLIPS Crescimento Limpo Advocate
T
he first time I met Mark and Ali was when I sojourned to Brazil in 2013, they had been married for nine years and had five other people living with them. Most of us did not even live with that many nonrelated people in our college years. Not to mention, all of those people fit into a threebedroom home; one originating as their garage. Their front yard is gated in, as most homes are in Itú (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and it includes an aquaponics system that Mark built. They are also the proud parents of a very intelligent dog, Buckeye (Mark is originally from Ohio). In 2011, Mark and Ali opened their home to receive friends for lunch, which they did and do regularly. These friends happened to be living on the street. After offering this lunch for a while, some of them asked for help. They spent six months in a rehabilitation community and returned renewed and drug free. But, there was a big problem: where would the people go postclinic? Without family to receive them, and without having their own homes, they would have to return to the street and the cycle would ruthlessly continue. From this realization began the mission. Crescimento Limpo -CL(Clean Growth), a halfway house, exists to make it possible for healthy living and independence to last

for their homeless friends. Their focus is on offering a place for people to live post-rehab. Since opening their doors, they have been walking side-by-side rehab clinics, hospitals, and other organizations that help people live free from substance abuse. They are helping lead people through the difficulties in life to a life of freedom. The latest project that Crescimento Limpo’s Director Mark, started was the Horta (Garden) that will not only give jobs to CL’s residents but will eventually sustain the halfway house to free them from the stresses of funding and grant writing. When I was in Itú in July, there were various groups helping Mark and CL to kick-start this organic garden that has now opened its doors. They say that the millennial generation prioritizes integrating their beliefs and causes into what they invest their time and money. Whether you happen to be a millennial or not, I hope you will consider how going against the normalcies society tells us to live in could be liberating and offer us a way of life that is much more meaningful than our present situation. Mark and Ali may have chosen a life that is too radical for you but maybe you are thinking of making a change that would help you go in a positive direction. I challenge you to listen to those thoughts or nudges and make the change.

True Love Waits Story of two young people who entered virgins to their marriage
H
ow do you maintain a relationship being Christians and still young, considering that hormones are more sensitive being young than at any other age? This is the most common question that Giovanni Olaya, Architect and Pescao Vivo’s Vocalist, and Vanessa Garzon, Journalist and Model, are asked when doing seminars in different cities, to discuss the importance of arriving virgin to the marriage. Virgin is a word hardly ever used nowadays, but only mentioned when referring to the Virgin Islands, Guadalupe Virgin, etc. It was not easy to maintain a relationship, dating for almost three years, obeying their parents who wanted both to end their careers before getting married. “When kissing for a long time, of course hormones began to boil, they say,” but the best way to combat it was, fleeing! . Stopping immediately and saying, goodbye, see you tomorrow.” When they, finally, came that long-awaited day, they were very happy, but also so tired from all the preparations for the wedding, “the first night we slept together as husband and wife, did just that, sleep!” says Giovanni. “The truth is that sex is perfected every day and every day is more intimately known to the couple, which is good when you have sex only with the person that God gave you! “They tell us in their book El Rockero y la Modelo (The Rocker and the Model). Are Virgins an endangered species? No! -they say- they are in the process of extension instead! Marriage is the most beautiful thing that can happen to a couple, here are some lies that do not let you hear God’s truth (from the book The Rocker and the Model- summarized)
Above all things guard your heart for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 “Surrender your heart to Jesus first, because every relationship is vertical, not horizontal; Jesus must have your heart first and HE will delivery it to the right person for you” (Vanessa-Seminar True Love Waits)
Lie # 1. No need to marry, if we can be only living together. Truth: Someone who does not want to commit is someone who actually knows no love. Lie # 2: Marriage is not easy Truth: We should change this sentence to “Marriage is not difficult to” , think more about what God can do for us than what the devil can do against us; without Jesus Nothing is easy. Lie # 3: Everyone needs their own space. Truth: Understand that true love is self-denial to make the other person happy, or at least that’s what we see in Jesus Christ nailed to the cross. Lie # 4: My mother in law is a witch. Truth: Giovanni says he loves and respects his mother in law, because she helped him with her daughter, he refers to her as “my mother in law is a compass” instead. Of course she is a woman committed to God. Lie # 5: The train will leave me soon. Truth: In God’s perfect timing, HE will bring the perfect train he has right for you.

PISCO
Cultural Heritage
BY: CESIBELL SANCHEZ
I
n Peru we have an aguardiente grape called Pisco, a designation of origin. It is a product obtained exclusively through the distillation of newly fermented wine made of Pisquera grapes, while preserving the original methods used. We currently have five grape-producing regions, each one with its own unique characteristics related to geographic location and climate, as well as the personality of its eight strains. The vast majority of them are produced from traditional, distinctive, local varieties like the Negra Criolla, Moscatel, Uvina or Torontel, and in the regions of Italy, the Quebranta, all famous international strains which have achieved a level that excites the senses with their aroma and quality.
In the southern region of Peru, in Arequipa, Moquegua y Tacna, we have the “Ruta del Pisco,” an option not to be missed by gastrotourists, who enjoy the pleasures of fine dining with Pisco. It’s a land of authentic flavors to discover for both national and international tourists. The Negra Criolla and Moscatel varieties are enjoyed by all, because they are traditional strains which never fail to give off considerable aroma, acquainting us with their singularities in each sampling. Moquegua continues to produce Piscos of great traditional varieties, thanks to techniques which were developed in colonial times, and it is worth your while visiting to try all of its exquisite products. La Ruta del Pisco in Moquegua begins in the Plaza Central, where experts say the wonderful combination of sun, soil and water that exists in this region, combined with the nearly 14 hours of sun, produces unparalleled aromatic fruits. Don’t miss trying the “Ruta del Pisco,” where, besides enjoying the different samplings of Pisco, you will always be served with an enchanting smile.
