“Our angel with a broken wing” Bobbi was born like all other babies and at approx. 5-6 months old, she started going backwards in her development, i.e; she was crawling then she stopped doing it, she started saying mumma and dada then she stopped doing it etc etc, she started flapping her hands around which we thought was unusual. We then knew something was wrong at 6 months and then she was clinically diagnosed with Rett Syndrome at 13 months and officially with blood testing at 2 years old. There is no know cure for Rett Syndrome, so basically we have to keep her as healthy and as mobile as we can, so she doesn’t lose all functions, otherwise she can die. The girls are known as the “silent angels”. It is a neurological condition which affects all speech, motor and developmental milestones. Bobbi is 5 and and turns 6 on the 2nd September. Her date of birth is 2/09/05. She will never walk or talk. Her condition progressively gets worse. She has many medical conditions associated with this syndrome, and needs 24 hour assistance from her family and numerous medical specialists. Bobbi is wheelchairbound for life and girls with Rett Syndrome generally have a shortened life expectancy. Bobbi requires ongoing specialist/ doctors appointments in Sydney, care alternates between the Sydney Childrens Hospital at Randwick and Westmead Childrens Hospital. A list of her medical conditions so far are; Epilepsy, Scoliosis, Osteoporosis, long/short heart arrhythmia, severe gastrointestinal issues ie; reflux disorder, constipation, aspiration. Bobbi can only have pureed food or she chokes. She has a Jejeunostomy and Gastrostomy (J-Peg) feeding tube in her stomach, and is fed overnight for approx. 12 hours on a pump with a specially made formula that has all

the nutrients she requires. With all the above conditions associated with Bobbi’s syndrome, she now needs all the necessary equipment for her care and movement. Bobbi has to go into a new special wheelchair (from overseas), other items needed are lifting frames, Spa for therapy on muscles, standing/walking frames, communication board, vibration boards, treadmills with standing frame attached. Her home will need to modified slightly to cater for her lifting and bathroom equipment at some stage. Besides the larger equipment, there are everyday items like AFO’s (splints that keep muscles stretched), leg wraps, gloves, arm splints, medicines, syringes, bags and tubing for pumps, tapes for J-Peg, creams, catheters etc... The fundraising will be a great day for everyone to get together, have some fun and hopefully raise some money to put towards purchasing equipment for Bobbi and her ongoing treatment needs. She’s our angel with a broken wing!!! So Alister Currie of Wiseberry Taree will be raising money by cycling to the Wiseberry Heritage office at Charmhaven on the Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September, a total of 225km to be there for Bobbi’s birthday.
