CABERNET FRANC GOES SOLO

At the table, Cabernet Franc food pairing is easy. Its brambly berry, wild strawberry, and occasionally plum-like fruit makes it a natural complement to richer sauces, and its underlying touch of spice works brilliantly alongside dry rubs and complex spice blends. Cabernet Franc paired with sweet-spicy smoked meats is a home run.

By Gina Trippi

But Cabernet Franc is not limited to pairing with meat, it also works well with vegetables, particularly when grilled. Cabernet Franc with vegetarian bean chili, for example, is excellent! With this dish and any other, however, gauge the heat. Too much spicy heat will clash. Keep the sizzle on low.

C

abernet Franc, a medium-bodied red wine born in France, is loved for its savory, bell pepper-like flavors, medium-high acidity and unforgettable taste. It is an ideal food pairing wine. While single-varietal Cabernet Franc wines are now being exported by a number of countries, the varietal maintains its status, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Carmenere, and Petit Verdot, as one of the grapes allowed in wines labeled Bordeaux. In Napa Valley, wines labeled as Cabernet Sauvignon often include a bit of Cabernet Franc. In Chile and Argentina, Cabernet Franc is increasingly important, and it’s also found in Australia, South Africa, Canada, Virginia, and Italy, where it is included in one of the great Super Tuscans blends. With its ability to play well with others, Cabernet Franc is far more widespread in planting and production than most people know. As with all grape varietals, winemaking techniques together with the serving temperature impact the taste of Cabernet Franc in the glass. A Cabernet Franc with a little chill on it highlights the herbal and bell pepper notes of the grape, whereas a room temperature glass allows the brambly berries, wild strawberries, and plums to take center stage. Generally speaking, Cabernet Franc offers aromas and flavors of bell peppers, spice, and earthy herbs with the occasional hints of minerality and tobacco. And if the wine has been aged in new oak, sweet spices and wisps of chocolate may come forward.

We offer Armand David Saumur Rouge “Siebrit” brought in by local Asheville importer, JP Bourgeois. A very charming traditional Cabernet Franc, lighter in body, the “Siebrit” presents fresh in the glass with notes of black cherries, blackcurrant jam and raspberries, followed by tobacco, black pepper and a touch of dark chocolate. The Armand David vineyard has seen 4 generations in one of the best winegrowing regions of France, Saumur. The entire family still works the harvest together! If you prefer a heavier style, try wines from Chinon. Our Vieilles Vignes by Patrick Lambert is from 55-year-old vines grown in sandy clay soils over limestone. Hand harvested and fermented with wild yeasts with 12 months of aging in old barrels. A deep red/black color, with aromas of strawberry, pepper, earth and citrus and a palate presenting earthy blackberry and strawberry with bitter chocolate, this is a complex, old-fashioned Chinon.

Spice pairing up with Cabernet Franc!

CELEBRATING

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

FEBRUARY

A

s we welcome the month of February, we also embrace the celebration of Black History Month. This month provides an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of black heritage, culture, and achievements to the history and development of the United States. In line with the essence of Black History Month, we must make every effort to celebrate diversity and inclusion. Here are a few recommendations for how to celebrate diversity and inclusivity during Black History Month: Educate yourself about Black History: There is no better way to understand the significance and complexity of Black History than actively seeking knowledge. The internet provides numerous resources ranging from online libraries, documentaries, and videos that should be made use of. You could also visit museums and exhibitions showcasing the achievements and historical accounts of African Americans. Attend Community Events, Lectures and Speeches: Black History Month events such as lectures, forums, and speeches can be enlightening and inspiring. You could engage in these events by attending lectures and speeches where wellrespected speakers share their experiences or expertise on black history. Utilize Social Media to Celebrate Black History: Social Media is a powerful tool that can be used to celebrate Black History Month. You could share posts, pictures, and videos of well-known black figures, events, and anecdotes that shaped black history. Join or Volunteer for Organizations Celebrating Black Culture: There are several organizations that promote black culture and heritage. You could volunteer your time and efforts to support these organizations or better still, join to actively contribute to the promotion of diversity and inclusivity. Support Black-Owned Businesses: As we celebrate Black History Month, it is essential to support black-owned businesses. Patronizing black-owned businesses goes a long way in promoting inclusivity and diversity.

Engage in Meaningful Conversations: Talking with friends, colleagues, and family members about Black History Month can lead to meaningful and thought-provoking conversations that promote diversity and inclusivity. Attend Black Church Services: Black church services are often an important platform for celebrating black culture and promoting diversity and inclusivity. Attending a black church service during Black History Month is a great way to appreciate the culture, spirituality, and traditions of the community. Host your Black History Month Event: You could host your Black History Month event where you invite people to a virtual or physical gathering to celebrate Black Culture and promote diversity and inclusion. Black History Month provides a significant opportunity to celebrate diversity and inclusivity. It’s essential to remember that celebrating and promoting Black History Month is not just limited to February, but should be an ongoing conversation and practice throughout the year. Let us commit to promoting and embracing diversity and inclusivity as we celebrate Black History.

and it requires attention and care to function correctly. Unfortunately, many Americans are at risk for heart disease due to lifestyle factors such as a poor diet, lack of physical activity, and smoking. Heart disease awareness is especially crucial in the current pandemic environment, as people are staying home and may be more likely to be sedentary, eat unhealthy foods, and experience significant stress levels. These factors can increase the risk of developing or exacerbating heart disease. Healthy Lifestyle Changes to Prevent Heart Disease Taking steps to improve heart health can help prevent heart disease and reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. Here are some healthy lifestyle changes that you can make to keep your heart healthy:

F

ebruary is American Heart Month, a time when the nation comes together to raise awareness about heart disease, its causes, and prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming the lives of over 647,000 Americans each year. This is why it’s crucial to educate the public about this disease and reduce its prevalence. What is American Heart Month? American Heart Month is an annual event during February that aims to raise awareness about heart disease and educate people on how to prevent it. It’s a time for individuals, healthcare providers, and communities to come together to promote healthy lifestyle choices and strategies that can help prevent heart disease. The American Heart Association (AHA) initiated American Heart Month in 1964, and since then, it has been a time to focus on heart health for all Americans. The AHA encourages everyone to wear red on the first Friday of February to show their support for the fight against heart disease, which is often called “National Wear Red Day.” The event aims to raise awareness of the prevalence of heart disease and encourage people to make healthy choices such as exercising, eating right, and avoiding smoking. The Significance of American Heart Month The American Heart Month helps to highlight the importance of taking care of your heart. The heart is a vital organ responsible for transporting blood throughout your body,

Exercise: Physical activity is a vital component of heart health. The AHA recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, such as brisk walking, dancing, or bicycling. Exercise can help lower blood pressure, prevent heart disease, and improve overall health. Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats can help prevent heart disease. Avoid foods high in saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and sodium. Quit Smoking: Smoking is a significant risk factor for heart disease, and quitting smoking can significantly improve heart health. Enroll in smoking cessation programs, use nicotine replacement therapy, and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke. Manage Stress: Chronic stress can damage your heart and increase the risk of heart disease. Develop healthy coping strategies like exercise, meditation, and spend time with supportive friends and family. Manage Existing Health Conditions: If you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes, work with your healthcare provider to manage these conditions effectively. These diseases can increase the risk of heart disease and require careful management. American Heart Month is an essential time to focus on heart health awareness. With the right lifestyle choices, we can lower our risk of heart disease and prevent heart attacks and stroke. By eating a heart-healthy diet, exercising regularly, managing our health conditions, and quitting smoking, we can make a meaningful difference in our heart’s health. So, let’s make every month American Heart Month by taking care of our hearts all year long! February 2024 | 50+ Living

The Local Music Makers

Amy & Jeff Benedict – Our New Favorite Couple

By Peggy Ratusz

I

f it weren’t for my vocal coaching side hustle, chances are I would have never met Jeff and Amy Benedict. They were the first “couple” I ever coached. For their band My New Favorites, they wanted help polishing up harmonies and smoothing out their blend. Gradually we started spending time together after our sessions ended, commiserating about life, love and the pursuit of the perfectly written song. Pretty soon we were attending each other’s performances and with my husband Bryan, double dating. I called them up for this interview and the first question I asked was, “When was the first time you felt that romantic chemistry?” Jeff answers: “The first time I saw Amy I thought she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen, which was inconvenient since at that time we were both with other people. It wasn’t until years later that we were able to express ourselves. So we had to put our feelings on the back burner.” Jeff, Amy and her then spouse were actually in a band together. Amy played guitar and Jeff played claw hammer

8

50+ Living | February 2024

banjo in that project. Eventually and after everyone went their separate ways, the opportunity arose for Jeff to call up Amy and ask her out on a date. “I was excited to hear from him because I’d been attracted to his overall positive energy,” Amy reveals. “He is active and adventurous; into doing the same things I like to do. And of course, his musicianship attracted me and still attracts me.” I ask about how their band, My New Favorites started. Amy explains, “Years after we were married, Jeff came to me and said, ‘I’m writing a lot of music so I need you to learn how to play string bass so we can start a band.’ ” An accomplished swing dancer, Amy appreciates the rhythm that an upright bass provides on the dancefloor, so she was excited to learn to play one. For her birthday in 2009, Jeff took her on a “secret” road trip. Unbeknownst to her, it was so she could pick out a tour-worthy string bass. “As we meandered through this neighborhood in Fishersville, VA I was puzzled and kept asking – ‘where are we going? Where are you taking me?’ So we pull up to this house and

we knock on the door and we walk inside to find that this guy’s entire home is full of Kay basses. And I mean in every room!” Jeff interjects and says “He had a very understanding wife.” It took Amy over five hours to choose the bass that’s been her perfect onstage dance partner for the past fourteen years. My New Favorites was born in 2010 and for a while there, Jeff was the only male member. He quips, “It was the first band I was in where shoes were often the topic of conversation and the question ‘what are we gonna wear?’ was a concern.” Conversely, it was the first band Amy was in where she wasn’t the only female member having to put up with what we all put up with when there’s boys in the band. Though members have come and gone, Jeff and Amy’s pride beams for their current and “favorite” members, Jason Carpenter on drums and Westly (with a “t”) Harris on fiddle. These two virtuosos have been with the group for five years. Jason’s Jazz and marching band leadership background brings a dynamic that shows up in unexpected ways. Jeff uses the word “remarkable” several times while describing his band mate. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve turned to him in amazement after he’s done something out of the ordinary that works. He brings this polyrhythmic notion to our sound that Amy refers to as “Eclecticana-Roots.” Copper Hill, Tennessee native, Westley Harris “is a phenomenal talent on fiddle and effortlessly plays different styles and fits in so very well,” Jeff gushes. “With a look or a lick on guitar, he’ll amp up the intensity, digging deeper in just the right way at just the right moment. His overall style and approach elevates our game in a myriad of ways.” Jeff is the conduit for their compelling original material. His writing style runs a gamut between danceable murder ballads to profoundly sad or romantic love songs, to humorous ditties ripe for singin’ along with lyrics that peak and hold interest. “The world is full of hooks if you just pay attention. There’s no linear path for me that’s predictable when it comes to writing. I get ideas; I put them on the page. As the tune evolves in our collaborative rehearsals, whatever idea I started with might not make the final cut. Whatever tempo or style I felt strongly would work might not in the long run. So I shed a tear and move on – or put those elements in another song.” Amy’s passion for painting, dancing and playing music as she explains it are, “woven together like a ball of yarn inside of me.” When she heard Old Time music for the first time,

she had to dance to it. When everyone around her was playing music, she learned to play guitar. Painters she was in awe of, inspired her to pick up a brush. “Music, art and rhythm excite me; and when I’m on stage, I especially love it when people are dancing!” Amy and Jeff have an endearing and enduring chemistry both on and off stage. Getting to know them as a couple is easy, even as they entertain us from stage. Whether it’s their playful teasing back and forth or his heartfelt nod or her flirtatious glance, the feels just wash over audiences like a warm hug. From Bristol Rhythm & Roots Music Festival to dance halls, breweries and house parties, you’ll find them touring Tennessee, Virginia and the Carolinas any time of the year. To follow them, visit their website: https://www.mynewfavorites.com/ As we begin to wrap things up, Jeff reminds me that “We’re sometimes referred to as great; but we’re always referred to as fun!” www.youtube.com/@mynewfavorites231 Peggy’s February Show Schedule: Thurs Feb 1st, River Arts District Brewing – Acoustic Blues with Kelly Jones & Peggy Ratusz, 6pm-8pm Fri Feb 2nd, Highland Brewery Downtown with Jonathan Pearlman, 6pm-8pm Sat Feb 3rd, One World West Invitational Blues Showcase with Peggy Ratusz & Daddy LongLegs Blues Band, 4pm-7pm Sat Feb 10th, Purple Onion Café, Saluda, NC Peggy Ratusz Trio 7pm-9pm Thurs Feb 15th, River Arts District Brewing, Acoustic Blues with Kelly Jones & Peggy Ratusz, 6pm-8pm Sat Feb 17th – Trailside Brewing Hendersonville, Peggy Ratusz Trio feat Kelly Jones & Ryan Kijanka, 6pm-9pm Peggy Ratusz is a vocal coach, song interpreter, and songwriter. Chicken Soup-er Powers Activated

C

hicken soup has long been considered a go-to remedy for those feeling under the weather. Whether it’s a common cold or flu, chicken soup has been known to provide relief for a number of symptoms associated with these ailments. While many people may simply resort to chicken soup as a comforting and soothing meal, there’s actually a lot more to this healing dish than meets the eye. In this article, we’ll explore the various ways in which chicken soup can help fight a cold, and how its warming and nourishing properties can help alleviate symptoms and speed up recovery. Reduces inflammation

Boosts the immune system Another key benefit of chicken soup when it comes to fighting a cold is its ability to boost the immune system. The broth in chicken soup is made by slow-cooking chicken bones, which releases a number of nutrients and minerals that can help to nourish the body and strengthen the immune system. One of these key nutrients is gelatin, which is derived from the collagen in the chicken bones and has been found to have immune-boosting properties. Additionally, the chicken meat itself contains a number of important nutrients such as vitamin B6, which is important for immune function.

One of the key ways in which chicken soup can help fight a cold is by reducing inflammation in the body. When you have a cold, your body’s immune response kicks in, causing inflammation as a way to fight off the virus. However, this inflammation can also lead to symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, and congestion.

Soothes sore throats

Chicken soup contains a number of anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as garlic, ginger, and turmeric, which can help to reduce this inflammation and alleviate these symptoms. In particular, garlic has been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory properties, while ginger contains compounds called gingerols which have been found to have similar effects on reducing inflammation.

The warm broth of chicken soup can help to soothe the throat, while the chicken meat itself is soft and easy to swallow, making it a good choice for those who may have difficulty eating when they’re sick. Furthermore, the garlic and ginger in chicken soup can help to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

10

50+ Living | February 2024

If you’ve ever had a cold, you’ll know that a sore throat can be one of the most uncomfortable symptoms. Fortunately, chicken soup can help to soothe this irritation and provide some much-needed relief.

Provides hydration When you’re sick, it’s important to stay hydrated in order to help flush out the virus and alleviate symptoms. However, drinking a lot of water can sometimes be a challenge, especially when you’re not feeling well. Chicken soup provides a good source of hydration, as it contains both water and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium, which can help to replenish fluids lost during illness. Additionally, the warm broth can help to loosen up mucus and congestion, making it easier to breathe. Fights fatigue Finally, chicken soup can help to fight fatigue and boost energy levels when you’re feeling run down. The chicken meat provides a good source of protein, which can help to keep you feeling full and satisfied, while the vegetables in the soup provide essential vitamins and minerals to help support overall health. Additionally, chicken soup has a warming and comforting effect, which can help to reduce stress and promote relaxation, ultimately leaving you feeling more energized after a bowl.

In conclusion, chicken soup has a number of benefits when it comes to fighting a cold, from reducing inflammation to boosting the immune system and providing hydration and nourishment. So next time you’re feeling under the weather, consider reaching for a warm bowl of chicken soup to help you on the road to recovery.

A Penny Saved

is a Penny Earned

keep your food costs low and avoid expensive take-outs. You can start by creating a weekly meal plan and making a grocery shopping list of the ingredients you will need for the week. Shopping in bulk for non-perishable items can also help reduce your expenses. Additionally, preparing your meals at home rather than eating out can save you a considerable amount of money. Reduce your Energy Consumption Reducing energy usage in your home is a simple way to save money without compromising your comfort. Simple actions such as turning off lights and electronics when not in use, setting your thermostat to a comfortable temperature, using energy-saving light bulbs, and washing clothes in cold rather than hot water can significantly reduce your energy bill. Additionally, installing a programmable thermostat can help you optimize your energy usage by automatically adjusting the temperature when you are away or asleep. Use Public Transportation or Carpooling

A

s the cost of living continues to rise, many people find it challenging to balance their expenses and maintain financial stability. The importance of developing a savings mindset and living within your means cannot be overstated. With proper planning and discipline, there are simple ways to save money and stick to your budget. Create a Budget One of the most effective ways to save money is to have a budget plan. A budget is a tool that helps you to plan and allocate your income towards the necessary expenses, savings, and discretionary spending. It is an effective way to keep track of your finances and avoid overspending. The first step in creating a realistic budget is to determine your monthly income and your essential expenses. The essential expenses should include housing, utilities, food, and transportation. You should allocate a certain amount for each of these expenses and ensure that you stick to the budget. Plan your Meals Another way to save some money is through proper meal planning. Planning your meals in advance will help you to

14

50+ Living | February 2024

Transportation costs are a significant expense for most people, especially if you have to commute daily. Using public transportation or carpooling is a great way to reduce your transportation expenses significantly. Public transportation is considerably cheaper than owning a car, particularly when you consider other expenses such as fuel, insurance, and maintenance costs associated with owning a vehicle. Additionally, carpooling with colleagues or friends can help reduce your fuel expenses and provide you with an opportunity to socialize. Negotiate your Bills Negotiating with service providers such as utilities, insurance, and internet providers can help lower your bills. You should always review your bills to ensure that you are not paying for items or services you do not need. Many service providers offer introductory rates or discounts for long-term customers, so be sure to ask. You can also bundle services such as internet, phone, and cable to receive a discounted rate. Shop Smartly Shopping smartly for groceries, clothes, and other purchases can save you a considerable amount of money. Shopping during sales, using coupons, and buying in bulk are simple ways to cut down on your expenses. Additionally, you should avoid impulse buying and be aware of your spending habits. You can also shop at thrift stores and consignment shops for clothes, furniture, and other items.

Start Saving Early Saving money should be part of your budget plan. Starting to save as early as possible can help you achieve long-term financial goals, such as retirement or buying a home. You should consider opening a high-yield savings account that earns a higher interest rate than traditional savings accounts. Additionally, you can start investing in low-cost index funds, which offer a diversified investment portfolio at a low cost. Automate your Savings Automating your savings is a great way to ensure that you save consistently. You can set up automatic transfers from your checking account to your savings account, which can help you build your emergency fund and long-term savings without even thinking about it. Additionally, many employers offer a retirement savings plan, such as a 401(k) plan, which allows you to save for retirement pre-tax. Realizing that saving money is crucial to achieving financial stability is the first step towards building your savings. Simple changes, such as creating a budget, reducing energy consumption, planning your meals, using public transportation, negotiating with service providers, shopping

smartly, starting to save early, and automating your savings, can help you achieve your long-term financial goals. It’s important to remember that saving money requires discipline, but the rewards are worth it. By adopting these simple strategies and sticking to them, you can be well on your way to achieving financial freedom.

Green Juicing Into The New Year by Laurie Richardone

After a couple of months of indulging with sugar, many of us might be feeling less-than-stellar. I must admit, it left me feeling a bit foggy, and sluggish. The great news is, our body is resilient and knows how to heal itself. I think it important to give ourselves permission to have sweet treats on occasion; however, too much sugar can be harmful to the brain as it affects certain neurotransmitters which can result in sugar addictions. Studies show that sugar contributes to inflammation in the brain, and the body. I decided to do a juice cleanse, and pull my juicer out after living in the dark of my cabinet. A couple of days of nutritious juicing has made a big difference in how I felt. It interrupted my sugar cravings from all that wonderful indulging I did. Did you know that sugar has an addictive quality? The more we eat, the more our body craves it. There is a big difference in how our body feels when we feed it the right nutrients. Feeling sluggish, and less than optimal can be a great motivator to do a cleanse. By drinking juice, the body absorbs nutrients quickly, without having to digest fibers and other components in whole foods. Moreover, it helps us get a larger intake of vitamins and minerals. I have found that juicing for 2-3 days left me with more clarity, and energy. You can go longer if you like. However, like all things, moderation is pivotal. We can overdo the good things as well. I like to look at all the attributes in ingredients that are considered healthy, and check in with my body to see if it feels favorable to me. For example: Spinach contains oxalates along with raw kale. These compounds are also found in bananas, mangoes, cauliflower, and more. Eating these vegetables raw, in large amounts, can affect thyroid function. There are many other healthy greens if kale, or spinach aren’t complimentary for you to consume in juicing. If you have a healthy bowel absorption and rotate your foods then there is no reason why you should not consume oxalate foods and enjoy them. Moderation, and rotation of foods is key. Buying a juicer has converted me from store bought juice, even if it’s organic, to making my own. When you make your own, it’s fresher, and so much more delicious. You also have more control as to where the ingredients are coming from. There are juicers out there for all budgets, so I hope you will give juicing a try. An alternative is a blender, then place it in a cheese cloth, or fine strainer, to eliminate the pulp. Here is a brief review of the benefits of the simple ingredients I use in juicing: Cucumbers: The most vital nutrients in cucumbers are vitamins A, C, D, and K, as well as calcium and magnesium lowering inflammation. Celery: Celery is a wonderful source of vitamin K, folate and potassium. Studies have shown that juicing large amounts may act like a multivitamin drink. Spinach: Drinking spinach juice is a great way to boost your antioxidant intake. Kale: Kale strengthens the body’s immune system, and is a great detoxifier. Granny Smith Apples: Granny Smith apples are one of the rare fruits allowed on a candida diet, when detoxing from sugar. The skin is the most nutrient dense part of the apple, this is why it’s important to use organic. They also take the edge off the sometimes bitterness of the greens. Lemons: Lemons are wonderful for digestive issues in the gut. Much of the bad bacteria in our gut is what makes us feel less than optimal. A diet that’s high in sugar can eliminate the beneficial bacteria in our gut. The goal is oriented around starving out some of the bad bacteria. I recommend experimenting, using different greens to see what works for your body. To your good health. Green Energy Juice Green juicing interrupts sugar cravings, giving our body the reset it needs. Makes 14 ounces of juice INGREDIENTS 1 large bunch spinach, or kale 1 English cucumber, or other 4 stalks of celery 1 Granny Smith apple 1/2 lemon, juiced 1/2 tsp. organic cinnamon, optional

I recommend using organic produce to avoid pesticides, which cause inflammation in the body. Experiment using other green vegetables. Cut up all ingredients into small - medium pieces. Remove the stems from kale if using. Cut the ends off the spinach. Adding lemon can support gut health. Cinnamon has antioxidant properties, and is anti-inflammatory. Put all ingredients into the juicer of choice. Add the cinnamon, if using, and mix well. Enjoy the fresh flavor, and benefits of your green juice.

Treat Yourself to a Healthy Snack

For those who prefer savory snacks, there are numerous options as well. One great choice is vegetable sticks with hummus. Not only do you get the benefits of the veggies’ vitamins and antioxidants, but the protein and healthy fat from the chickpeas can help keep you full. Another snack that is both crunchy and satisfying is air-popped popcorn. Popcorn is high in fiber, which promotes digestion and can aid in weight loss. Nuts and seeds are also a fantastic option for a healthy snack. They contain a wealth of nutrients, including healthy fats, fiber, and protein. Almonds, cashews, and pistachios are great on their own or mixed into a trail mix with dried fruit and a bit of dark chocolate. Chia seeds and flaxseeds can be sprinkled on top of your meals for an extra dose of omega-3 fatty acids, which can improve brain function and reduce inflammation. If you’re looking for something more filling, protein bars or shakes can be a life-saver when you’re on-thego. However, it is essential to read the labels carefully and choose bars that are low in sugars and artificial ingredients. Some great options include Quest Bars or a shake made with protein powder and a banana.

I

n a world full of unhealthy choices, it can be a challenge to find snacks that are both tasty and good for you. However, keeping your body fueled with nutritious snacks throughout the day can boost your energy levels, increase your productivity, and improve your overall health. From satisfying salty cravings to indulging your sweet tooth, there are a plethora of healthy snack options that can keep you on track with your diet and lifestyle goals. One crucial consideration when choosing a snack is to pay attention to the nutrient content. Protein, fiber, and healthy fats can help keep your hunger at bay and stabilize your blood sugar levels. These nutrients can also provide your body with the necessary energy to power through your day. In contrast, snacks that are high in processed sugars, sodium, and saturated fats can cause crashes and leave you feeling sluggish. When it comes to sweet snacks, fruit is always a go-to option. Not only are they a great source of fiber and vitamins, but they also contain natural sugars that are healthier than a candy bar. Some particularly delicious and healthy fruit snacks include berries, apple slices with almond butter, or a banana with a handful of walnuts. If you’re feeling fancy, blending some frozen fruit with a bit of yogurt can make a nutritious and satisfying smoothie.

In addition to choosing snacks with the right nutrients, timing and portion size can also impact your overall health. Eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day can keep your metabolism going and prevent overeating. When snacking, portion control is critical. Pre-portioned snacks can help avoid overeating and make it easier to keep track of your calorie intake. Another factor to consider when snacking is hydration. Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health and can help control appetite and cravings. Drinking water, tea, or infusing your water with fruits and herbs can provide a refreshing and healthy way to stay hydrated while snacking. In summary, healthy snacking is essential for maintaining a balanced diet and promoting overall health. Choosing snacks that are high in protein, fiber, and healthy fats can help keep you full and energized throughout the day. Well-rounded snacks such as fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds can provide an array of essential nutrients. Remember to practice portion control and stay hydrated while snacking. With a little planning and creativity, it’s easy to find delicious, nutritious snacks that can nourish your body and mind.

overweight puts additional stress on the spine, increasing the likelihood of herniated discs and other spinal issues. Finally, certain occupations that require prolonged sitting or heavy lifting can also contribute to sciatica. Despite the various causes of sciatica, the most fundamental issue is nerve compression. When irritation, inflammation, or injury impacts the sciatic nerve, it can lead to sharp, shooting pain. As the condition progresses, individuals may experience weakness, tingling, or loss of limb function as the compressed nerve becomes increasingly damaged.

What causes Sciatica to Flare Up?

S

ciatica is an often-debilitating condition characterized by pain that radiates from the lower back all the way down to the legs. It can be caused by a variety of underlying factors, both mechanical and non-mechanical.

Mechanical factors include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. Herniated discs are caused when the soft, gel-like center of a spinal disc ruptures through its tough exterior layers. This can irritate the surrounding nerves, leading to pain down the legs. Spinal stenosis, on the other hand, is caused by the narrowing of the spinal canal, which can lead to compression of the nerves. Degenerative disc disease occurs as the spinal discs wear down over time due to aging or repetitive strain, leading to the vertebrae and nerves rubbing against each other. Non-mechanical factors can also cause sciatica, including tumors, infections, and even pregnancy. Tumors can grow in the spinal canal, impacting nerve function and causing pain. Infections can lead to inflammation or pressure on nerves, resulting in more pronounced sciatica symptoms. Finally, pregnant women may experience sciatica due to the pressure of the growing fetus on the nerves in the pelvic region. Additional risk factors that contribute to the development of sciatica include age, obesity, and occupation. The likelihood of developing sciatica increases with age, as degenerative changes in the spine become more common. Being

There are several ways to diagnose sciatica, including x-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. Once diagnosed, treatment options will vary depending on the underlying cause. Conservative treatments like physical therapy, massage, and chiropractic care can alleviate symptoms and promote healing. For more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to relieve nerve compression and restore normal function. However, the best way to prevent sciatica is through adopting healthy lifestyle habits. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly to keep the muscles and joints strong, engaging in good posture and body mechanics when sitting or lifting, and avoiding excessive sitting or standing will all reduce the risk of developing sciatica. As with many health conditions, prevention is always better than cure. Sciatica is a painful condition that can be caused by a wide array of factors. It is crucial to understand the underlying causes of sciatica in order to develop a targeted treatment plan. By taking steps to promote healthy lifestyles and minimize risk factors, individuals can prevent sciatica from occurring in the first place. With the right care and attention, individuals can manage and overcome sciatica, allowing them to live healthy, pain-free lives. February 2024 | 50+ Living

It’s All About The

PILLOWS

A

s we lay our heads down at night, we often don’t give much thought to the little things that make our sleep comfortable. One of these little things, and indeed one of the most important, is our bed pillow. A good pillow provides the necessary support for our neck and spine, ensuring a restful and refreshing sleep. But have you ever wondered, how often should we replace our pillows? In this article, we will explore the subject and give you all the facts and information you need to make an informed decision. Firstly, it’s essential to understand the purpose of a pillow. A good pillow should keep your head, neck, and spine in a neutral and aligned position; this reduces stress on these pressure points and ensures proper airflow, which prevents snoring and better breathing. Over time, pillows can lose their shape and support, and this can lead to discomfort and reduced sleep quality. The general recommendation given by health experts is to replace your pillow every 1-2 years. This period ensures that your pillow is not harboring any allergens or dust mites that could cause respiratory problems or allergies. Additionally, the padding inside the pillow compresses over time, compromising its supportiveness. However, it is essential to point out that the replacement timeline can depend on several factors, such as pillow type, material, and usage habits.

50+ Living | February 2024

Pillows come in a variety of types, including memory foam, latex, down/synthetic down, microbead, and water-filled. Each of these types has its unique properties that impact the pillow’s lifespan and replacement timeline. For instance, memory foam pillows are renowned for their quality, durability, and ability to conform to the shape of your head and neck. They can last up to three years and are resistant to dust mites and other allergens. On the other hand, down/synthetic down pillows offer a luxurious feel, but they tend to lose their shape quickly, requiring replacement every six months to a year. Secondly, pillow replacement depends on usage habits. If you sleep on your side or stomach, your pillows are likely to compress faster, and you may need to replace them more frequently. If you tend to sweat at night or suffer from allergies, it is advisable to replace your pillows every year. If you use a pillow for lounging or as decorative accents, you could extend their lifespan for several years. To determine whether your pillow is still supportive and in good condition, carry out this simple test: fold your pillow in half and see how quickly it returns to its original shape. A good pillow should spring back almost immediately. However, if yours takes a few seconds or more or stays folded, it could be a sign that it has lost its supportiveness and requires replacement.

Apart from the importance of great sleep, regularly replacing your pillow has several other benefits. For starters, a fresh pillow can help prevent allergies, as the old one can harbor dust mites, skin cells, and other allergens. Replacing your pillows also helps prevent aches and pains that can result from a lack of proper support. Moreover, if you suffer from acne or skin irritation, regular pillow replacement can help alleviate these conditions. It’s important to remember that pillows are not a one-sizefits-all solution. Your comfort preferences will determine which type of pillow suits you best. It’s also worth investing in quality pillows that offer the necessary support and durability. While you may be tempted to buy cheap pillows, it’s important to note that they may need replacing more frequently, and the cost could add up over time. Your pillow plays a vital role in your sleep quality and overall health. While there is no hard and fast rule on when to replace your pillow, the general recommendation is every 1-2 years, depending on usage habits and pillow type. It’s essential to carry out regular checks on the state of your pillow and replace them if they lose their supportiveness or harbor allergens. Regular replacement ensures that you enjoy great sleep, prevent allergies, and wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. So go on, invest in a quality pillow and watch how it transforms your sleep experience.

Hoppy Leap Year

To make up for this difference, the Egyptians added an additional day to their calendar every four years. This practice was later adopted by the Romans, and eventually, the Julian calendar was introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BCE. The Julian calendar, while more accurate than previous calendars, still had some discrepancy as the length of a year was calculated to be 365.25 days. It was not until the 16th century that the Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII. This calendar was more accurate than its predecessors, accounting for the extra leap year day by eliminating it on century years, unless they are divisible by 400. This means that 1900 was not a leap year, but 2000 was, and the year 2100 will not be. The Gregorian calendar, used by most countries in the world today, is accurate to within one day every 3236 years. But why do we need leap years? The additional day every four years helps keep our calendar year in sync with the actual time it takes for the Earth to orbit the sun. Without leap years, our calendar would gradually drift out of sync with the seasons, causing the months to shift both backwards and forwards. This would create havoc for farmers, who rely on the seasons for planting and harvesting, as well as for anyone who needs to schedule events or holidays. Leap years also play a crucial role in the world of science and technology. The accuracy of GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation technology, for example, is dependent on the precise measurement of time, which is based on the Earth’s orbit. Without counting for leap years, GPS systems would gradually become less accurate, leading to errors in navigation and location tracking.

E

very four years, we have an additional day on our calendar, and that year is called a Leap Year. A leap year consists of 366 days instead of the usual 365, with February having 29 days instead of 28. But have you ever wondered why we need this extra day every four years? The concept of a leap year dates back to the ancient Egyptians, who first recognized that their calendar year of 365 days was not in line with the actual time it took for the Earth to orbit the sun. This discrepancy was due to the fact that it takes the Earth approximately 365.24 days to complete its orbit of the sun, causing a difference of approximately six hours every year.

22

50+ Living | February 2024

Apart from these practical reasons, leap years also have cultural significance. In traditional folklore, leap years were considered to be a time when women could reverse traditional gender roles and propose marriage to men. This is because the extra day was seen as an opportunity to challenge gender norms and societal expectations. Today, leap years are often celebrated, with various events and festivals taking place around the world on February 29th. While a leap year may seem like a small and insignificant addition to our calendar, it has played a crucial role in keeping our calendar in sync with the actual time it takes for the Earth to orbit the sun. By adding an additional day every four years, we are able to maintain a sense of continuity and consistency in our daily lives. Whether we are farmers relying on the seasons for planting and harvesting, or we are using GPS technology to navigate our way around the world, leap years are a necessary and important part of our lives, both practically and culturally.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

INGREDIENTS:

1 pound of fresh strawberries 10 ounces of chocolate chips (semi-sweet or dark chocolate) 1 tablespoon of coconut oil INSTRUCTIONS: Rinse the strawberries and pat them dry with a paper towel. Choose the biggest and most ripe strawberries for better results. Line a baking sheet or a tray with parchment paper and set it aside. In a double boiler or using a microwave, melt the chocolate and coconut oil together. Stir constantly until smooth and creamy. Holding the strawberries by the stem, dip them into the melted chocolate and coat them evenly. Use a fork to lift them up and let excess chocolate drip off. Place each chocolate covered strawberry on the prepared tray, making sure they don’t touch each other.

Optional: sprinkle some chopped nuts, shredded coconut, or sea salt on top of each strawberry before the chocolate sets. Let the chocolate covered strawberries cool and harden at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. You can also chill them in the fridge for faster results. Serve the chocolate covered strawberries as a dessert or a treat, and enjoy the delicious combination of juicy fruit and rich chocolate. You can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. TIPS: Make sure the strawberries are completely dry before dipping them in chocolate, or the chocolate won’t adhere well. Use a good quality chocolate for better flavor and texture. You can also experiment with different types of chocolate, such as white chocolate or milk chocolate. If you don’t have coconut oil, you can use butter or vegetable oil instead. The oil helps to thin out the chocolate and prevent it from seizing. You can also use a piping bag or a ziplock bag to drizzle melted chocolate over the strawberries in a decorative pattern.
