Nothing says summer like Txakolina. What? First of all, Txakolina is pronounced like this (chock-oh-LEE-nah).
Eric Asimov, wine critic for the New York Times, recently recommended Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina 2020 imported by De Maison Selections in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Once largely unknown in the United States, Txakolina has become increasingly popular “when the weather turns warm,” Asimov says.
Txakolina, despite the trend, is still not everywhere. 80% of Txakolina is consumed in Spain; but thanks to our local North Carolina importer, we have Ameztoi Txakolina at Metro Wines!
Txakolina is a mildly efervescent, one of a kind, wine from Basque Country in Spain. But a bottle of Txakolina is more than just a very unique wine, it is the continuation of a centuries old tradition. Te Basque Country is located in the western Pyrenees straddling the border between France and Spain on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, thought to be inhabited since the 16th century.
A respected producer, Ameztoi farms twenty acres of high altitude clay calcareous and limestone vineyards on the seaside clifs of the ancient fshing village of Getaria. Ignacio Ametztoi is the ffh generation of his family to carry on the tradition of making Txakolina from their old vines dating from 1860 to 2008.
Te Ameztoi style is high acidity and about 11% alcohol, salty and briny, notes with a natural fzz using only the native varietal of hondarrabi zuri. Fermented in closed, stainless steel tanks, only indigenous yeasts from the vineyard are used and natural carbonation is preserved.
To heighten your experience, try drinking Txakolina from the traditional porron! Te exact origin of the porron is not certain but it most likely started in Catalonia and has been part of the Spanish wine culture for centuries. To drink from the porron, tilt your head back, hold the porron high above your head and pour the magic elixir into your mouth without touching the spout. Te idea here was to foster communal drinking.
What pairs with Txakolina? Martha Stewart says this perfect summer wine is the perfect match for seafood, especially with a Spanish touch. Ameztoi Txakolina has been described as a lightning bolt hitting the palate. Make your summer sparkle.

Materials
Birdhouses can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, and metal. Te material you choose depends on your location and the bird species you hope to attract. Wooden birdhouses are the most common and popular, as they provide a natural look that blends well with your surroundings.
However, plastic birdhouses are gaining popularity due to their durability and weather resistance. Metal birdhouses are also an option but should be painted in earthy colors to avoid overheating during the summer months.
Maintenance
As the world is becoming more and more urbanized, it has become increasingly difcult for our feathered friends to fnd suitable living spaces. Birdhouses serve as great alternatives to natural nests, providing birds with secure shelter while enhancing the beauty of our surroundings. If you’re looking to attract birds to your birdhouse, here are a few tips and tricks to get started.
Location, Location, Location
When it comes to birdhouses, location is key. Te placement of your birdhouse can determine whether or not birds will be attracted to it. Typically, birdhouses should be placed in areas where there is plenty of natural cover, such as trees or shrubs. Tis helps birds feel more secure when entering and exiting the birdhouse.
Furthermore, ensure that the birdhouse is not in direct sunlight or exposed to strong winds. Tis can make the birdhouse uncomfortable for birds and discourage them from using it. Also, ensure that the birdhouse is placed high enough to keep it out of reach of predators.
Size and Shape
Diferent bird species have specifc requirements when it comes to the size and shape of their nests. Ensure you select a birdhouse with the appropriate size of entrance hole to match the bird species you want to attract. Smaller entrance holes are best for attracting small birds such as fnches and wrens. Larger birds like bluebirds and woodpeckers require larger entrance holes.
Te shape of the birdhouse also plays a big role in attracting birds. A basic box-shaped birdhouse can work great for general use, but you may want to consider diferent shapes depending on the species you hope to attract. Bluebirds, for example, prefer bird houses shaped like vertical rectangles.
Once your birdhouse is in place, it’s important to constantly maintain it to ensure its longevity. Regular cleaning will prevent the buildup of bacteria and harmful parasites, making the birdhouse safer and more attractive to birds.
Clean the birdhouse at least once a year by removing all old nesting materials and debris. Use a gentle detergent and water to clean the box thoroughly, and let it dry completely before putting new material back in.
Additional Attractants
While location, size, shape, and maintenance are important considerations, adding additional bird-attracting features can also help entice birds to your birdhouse. Consider adding a bird feeder or a birdbath near your birdhouse. Tis creates an area that birds will consider their own and is a great way to encourage them to nest nearby.
Additionally, providing birds with nesting materials such as feathers, twigs, or string can also attract them to your birdhouse. Place these materials near the birdhouse, but not inside, to keep the nest clean and safe for the birds.
Attracting birds to your birdhouse can be a rewarding experience that provides a window into the fascinating world of birds. With the tips outlined above, you can create a successful birdhouse that will be inviting for all kinds of bird species.
Remember: location, size and shape, materials, maintenance, and additional attractants are all crucial considerations when building and maintaining your birdhouse. With a bit of patience and dedication, you can create a bird-friendly environment that will attract birds to your backyard for years to come.

Are you sitting down while reading this article? Chances are, you are. Sitting has become a common activity in our daily routine, whether it’s at work, at home, or during leisure time. However, sitting for prolonged periods of time may have harmful efects on our bodies. In this article, we will explore the dangers of sitting all day and provide insights on how to mitigate them.
To understand the impact of sitting, let’s frst look at our body’s response to inactivity. When we remain sedentary, the electrical activity in our muscles decreases, and enzyme activity drops, leading to a slower metabolism. As a result, we burn fewer calories, and the insulin levels in our body spike. Tis increased insulin levels lead to an increased risk of obesity and diabetes.
Sitting for extended periods has also been linked with cardiovascular diseases. When sitting, our leg muscles are inactive, which results in sluggish blood fow to our limbs and a lower level of oxygenation. Te heart must, therefore, work harder to circulate blood, which elevates the risk of high blood pressure and issues like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Research has shown that individuals who sit for more than six hours a day have a 48% increased risk of dying from coronary heart disease (CHD) compared to those who sit for fewer than three hours.
In addition to physical health concerns, sitting for long periods also afects our mental well-being. A study found that people who sit for prolonged periods every day had a higher risk of depression and anxiety. It is believed that decreased blood fow and oxygen to the brain impact our mood and cognitive functions negatively.
So, what can we do to prevent the damaging efects of sitting all day? Here are a few tips:
Take frequent breaks: Make it a habit to stand up and move around every 30 minutes. Whether it’s grabbing a glass of water or taking a quick walk around the ofce, it helps break the prolonged periods of inactivity.
Use a standing desk: Consider using a standing desk or a height-adjustable desk that allows you to switch between sitting and standing positions throughout the day.
Set reminders: Use your phone or computer to set reminders to stand up and stretch, so you don’t forget to take frequent breaks during work hours.
Move your body: Incorporate regular physical activity into your daily routine, even outside of work. Exercise is not only benefcial for physical health but also practical for maintaining emotional and mental well-being.
Proper posture: Focus on maintaining proper posture such as keeping your back straight, feet fat on the ground, and shoulders relaxed while sitting.
Drink water: Drinking water frequently throughout the day not only keeps you hydrated, but it also gives you an excuse to move around and stretch your legs.
Te negative impacts of sitting all day are undeniable. However, by taking the necessary steps to reduce our inactivity, we can mitigate the damaging efects that come with it. Remember, a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, proper nutrition, and reduced sitting time can signifcantly improve our overall health and well-being. When it comes to health, little changes can make a big diference. So, why not start today? Get up, stretch, and move your body – your physical and mental health will thank you.

Love Bubble’s sophomore record release urges everyone to DREAM BIG!
By Peggy Ratusz
Paula Hanke, Hank Bones and I have been anticipating the month of July since February of this year.
Tat’s when we began recording new music for our sophomore release show on Sunday, July 9th at Te Grey Eagle starting at 7pm. We vowed not to do any performances until this special concert and we’ve stuck to it! So, for our loyal and patient family of fans, the wait to hear us again is over!
We recorded this collection of brand new songs in our Love Bubble Clubhouse studio and we’ve called it “Dream Big”. As you might imagine we are nervous, excited and eager to present to a live audience, these charming and delightful songs.
For Te Grey Eagle concert, we’ll be accompanied by a full band of notoriously superlative players: Taylor Pierson on keys/piano; Connor Law on bass and Micah Tomas on drums and percussion.
Expect more love, more bubble, and heartfelt lyrics written and co-written by the three of us. From storytelling to prose and poetry, each tune is rich in arrangement, instrumentation, melody, rhyme and rhythm.
Back in 2019, when Hank invited Paula and me to “step inside” his Love Bubble, we were spellbound by his enthusiastic pitch and his high hopes to focus this project on nothing but positivity and love.
Hank Bones has always been afectionately referred to as “the man of 1000 songs” but he’s also a master on electric and acoustic guitar, bass, drums and percussion. Tose skills are ftting since he plays 90% of the instruments on this release. His confdent vocalese and superior pitch translates to impeccable harmony and gang vocal arrangements here; just like they did on our debut record, “Love Revolution”; just like they do on everything Mr. Bones arranges!
Ms. Hanke is a Star Search veteran and frst-call session’s vocalist (BJ Leiderman, Chris Rosser, David LaMotte), nailing line afer line on the frst take in the studio. She is a wonder to behold with her agile and scintillating voice and swif discernment of what will sound best, executing the notes and emotion required to accentuate a phrase.
Having shared the stage with such notables as Willie Nelson and James Taylor, Paula fronts her own band,

In-the-Pocket, covering Funk and Disco classics. Her collaborations with me include tributes to icons: Linda Ronstadt and Etta James. A multi-instrumentalist (ukulele, fute, banjulele and tipple), she brings all these strong suits to the Love Bubble franchise!
I’m just elated that the two of these stalwarts continue to invite me along on this magic carpet ride!
It truly never ceases to amaze me that as diferent as our three voices are, we blend in such sonically pleasing ways. I attribute most of our synchronicity to the fact that what we have created and what we continue to explore comes from love. Even when things get a little cantankerous within the creative process, we end up reaching kismet time afer time. I refer to us as the quintessential musical ménage à trois!
Playing rough mixes for friends and family have proven to us that these new songs tickle fancies within that yearn to be aroused. In a world where increasing fear and threats and escalated politically charged violence and human rights violations are happening all over the globe, the messages meandering in and out of this new batch of songs will remind you it’s never futile or too late to have hope and manifest the dreams that mean the most to you, no matter your age.
Te hope in Hank’s song, “She is Everywhere”, describes that he sees the same enchanting woman wherever he goes. Over verse and chorus, he writes about the lilting feeling it evokes when he does. Te nostalgia conveyed in Paula’s Song “Columbus Street”, where she recalls that poignant day when she runs into an old lover and is immediately taken back to the sublime memory of the last time they saw one another. How they danced as if there was not time or space. And the song “Wholeheartedly” that I wrote is three stories in one song that advocates we look for unity within our common ground.
Te cogent title cut is as romping and joyful as you think it should be. Te playful prodding it delivers: “Just dream as big as you want to, you don’t even have to close your eyes. When your ship has sailed it doesn’t mean that you failed, dream big” is as ageless as it gets.
Te drums and electric guitar is killer on “Rhythm of a Heartbeat”. Tough the lyrics aren’t earth shatteringly life changing or anything, Hank arranged a rock and
roll throwback 1950’s or 1960’s dance party vibe. “My pal Sal has got a stash of 45’s let’s have a bash; A jukebox full of T-Rex all night long!”
Right afer Hank wrote the song “You Inspire Me” he told Paula and me that together, we were his muse on this one and that he means every word in it. Tis is the frst song anyone ever wrote where I was part of the impetus behind it. “You inspire me, light a fre in me….your laugh your face, your style and grace, all that good stuf in one place, inspires me.”
Both Hank and I wrote the song “Now is the Time” and it turned out to be the kind of song we can never get enough of; a reminder that our time is limited within this realm. “Now is the time…now is the time and place, let’s make a space, now is the time and place for a chain reaction of satisfaction and love.”
I will write this last line with as much humility as I can muster: Every song on this new trove is a treasure.

Summer Safety Tips for Your Furry Friends
Summer is a fantastic season for both humans and their canine companions. It is time for outdoor activities, swimming, and sunbathing. However, as temperatures rise, so do the risks for our furry friends. Te summer heat can pose a serious threat to dogs, with the potential for overheating and dehydration, as well as the risk of injury from hazards like hot pavements or sharp objects. As a responsible dog owner, it is your job to take care of your furry companion’s health and safety when temperatures soar. Here are some summer safety tips to keep in mind.
Hydration is key
Te frst thing every responsible dog owner should do in the summer is to ensure their dogs have access to plenty of fresh water. Dogs need to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, especially when they are active or out in the sun. When you’re out and about with your furry friend, bring a portable bowl and fresh water with you, and make sure to take regular breaks to let them drink and rest. You could also add some ice cubes to the water to help your dog cool down. Keep an eye on the water levels and refll the bowl as necessary.
Sun protection
Just as humans need sun protection, dogs do too. Teir skin is susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer. Te areas of the body where fur is sparse, like the belly, nose, and ears, are particularly vulnerable. To prevent sunburn, apply a dog-specifc sunscreen to your pooch’s nose, ears, and other exposed areas. Be sure to use a pet-friendly product and read the label carefully to avoid harmful ingredients.
Take a break from the heat
When temperatures soar, it’s important to give your dog a break from the heat. Avoid exposing them directly to the sun, especially during the hottest hours of the day. When you’re out and about, fnd some shade and take regular breaks to let your dog rest and cool down. If possible, choose activities that don’t involve running or physical exertion during the heat of the day.
Timing matters
In the summer, timing is everything. Plan your outdoor activities for early in the morning or late in the evening. Tis way, you can avoid the midday heat and keep your dog safe from overheating, sunburns, and other heatrelated illnesses. If you must go out during the day, stay in the shade and take frequent rest breaks.
Watch out for hot pavement
Te summer sun can heat up pavements and other surfaces, ofen to a temperature higher than the air temperature. Tis can be dangerous for your dog’s paws. Walking on hot pavement can cause burns, blisters, and other injuries. To avoid this, test the pavement with your hand before taking your dog for a walk. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Alternatively, you can invest in dog boots to protect their feet.
Swimming safety
Swimming is an excellent way for your pup to cool down in the summer. However, not all dogs are good swimmers. Some breeds are not built for swimming, such as bulldogs
10 50+ Living | July 2023
or pugs. Additionally, even strong swimmers can get into trouble in the water. Always supervise your dog when they are swimming and make sure they wear a life jacket if necessary. Also, make sure they know how to get in and out of the pool safely.
Avoid close encounters with wildlife
Summer is a season when many wild animals are out and about. Your dog might love to chase squirrels or rabbits, but these animals can carry diseases or parasites that can harm your furry pal. Additionally, some animals like snakes or skunks can be dangerous. Always keep your dog on a leash when in the great outdoors and keep an eye out for potential hazards.
Summer can be a wonderful season for you and your furry friend. With a little extra care and attention, your dog can enjoy summertime activities without risking their health and safety. By following these summer safety tips, you can ensure a great summer for both you and your beloved pooch. Remember to stay hydrated and cool, use sun protection, avoid hot pavement, and keep a watchful eye out for hazards. Enjoy the season!

The Bountiful Benefts of Mushrooms
by Laurie Richardone
What would you think about eating a mushroom that looks a little like the scruf of a lion? I get it, not totally convinced about lion’s mane mushroom? What if I told you that it’s associated with major brain repair, potential cancer-fghting power, and has mouth watering culinary uses.
As we age our brain does not maintain itself the way it used to. Mushrooms can be the key that unlocks the door in keeping our brain healthy. Lion’ s mane mushrooms use compounds called hericenones to produce and simulate growth factors. Tis compound helps brain cells grow bigger, which translates to better brain function and improved memory. Personally, I have been eating lion’s mane mushrooms for over a year, along with consuming high quality extracts of Lion’s Mane, and I notice a visible diference in memory.
Lion’s mane mushroom is a nootropic food; meaning: it’s used to enhance memory or other cognitive functions. It is very popular in traditional Chinese medicine, and it’s ancient wisdom, which is thousands of years old. A large body of research has focused around this brain-boosting mushroom in the last few years, and the results are nothing short of astounding.
One study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry lists the benefts by stating lion’s mane mushroom is “antibiotic, anticarcinogenic, antidiabetic, anti-fatigue. Tat is a high dose of health benefts; and, they are scrumptious to cook with.
On a culinary level, you can do amazing things with this advantageous mushroom. You can transform them into croquettes that you might believe are actually crab cakes that many of us love so much. Tese croquettes make a beautiful vegetarian dish that will wow your friends.
Great news: You can fnd Lion’s mane mushrooms at our very own North Asheville Tailgate Market at Black Trumpet Farm.
Te best time to harvest Lion’s mane mushrooms is in the spring and early summer. I encourage you to spend a bit of time in the kitchen, and make delicious Lion’s mane croquettes this summer that will satisfy all food lovers.

Lion’s Mane Croquettes
Tis is a scrumptious vegetarian twist on the beloved crab cake. Its taste is reminiscent of lobster or crab, while its texture is tender.

When a person is diagnosed with a terminal illness or reaches the end stage of a chronic disease, they are ofen lef with a choice of how to manage their care. Two options, commonly known as palliative care and hospice care, are available to patients during these difcult times. Although these two terms are ofen used interchangeably, it’s essential to understand their signifcant diferences to make an informed decision.
Palliative Care
Palliative care is all about providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical, and mental stress caused by their disease. It is more commonly ofered at hospitals, outpatient clinics, and long-term care facilities, and can also be provided at home. Palliative care can start at any stage of a chronic illness diagnosis and is typically ofered along with traditional therapies such as chemotherapy or radiation. Its focus is on improving the quality of life for patients, as well as their families, by helping them manage the physical and emotional distress that comes with a chronic illness.
Te primary goal of palliative care is to provide a holistic and personalized approach to treating symptoms, enhancing patient comfort, and improving the quality of life. Tis approach includes managing pain, addressing
Palliative Care vs Hospice Care
spiritual, cultural, and social welfare needs, providing emotional support to patients and their family members, and dealing with the psychological and mental outcomes of a chronic illness.
Hospice Care
Hospice care, on the other hand, is for people who are nearing the end of life and have stopped pursuing curative treatments. Tis care focuses on improving the quality of life during the last six months of life and is usually ofered in-home, assisted living centers, hospice facilities, and hospitals.
Hospice is not only for patients with cancer but covers a wide range of terminal illnesses, including chronic lung disease, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney disease, and heart failure. Patients receiving hospice care have usually decided to focus on their comfort rather than attempting to heal their illness.
Te primary objective of hospice care is to provide an optimum quality of life for patients by providing soothing treatment for discomforting symptoms or pain. Hospice care also supports patients and their families to cope with their end of life journey by providing spiritual, emotional, and social support to both patients and their families

The Differences Between Palliative and Hospice Care
Despite the similarities between the two, hospice and palliative care difer in several crucial ways:
Timing of Treatment
While palliative care can be administered at any time during the course of a chronic illness, hospice care is ofered to patients who have a life-expectancy of about six months or less. Hospice care is for those who have chosen to stop seeking active treatment to cure their illness and instead choose to focus on comfort measures only.
Location of Treatment
While both hospice and palliative care can be ofered at a person’s home, hospice care can also be provided in a hospice facility, long-term care centers, and hospitals. Palliative care may also take place in these settings, but it may also happen in outpatient clinics or physician’s ofces.
Treatment Goals
Te primary goal of palliative care is to improve the patient’s quality of life and overall comfort, regardless of whether or not they are receiving curative treatment. Focused on symptom management and pain relief, palliative care works to improve the quality of life for patients by helping them manage the physical and emotional distress caused by their illness.
Hospice care, on the other hand, has the primary goal of enhancing the quality of life in the patient’s last months. Te goal of hospice is not to cure the disease but to provide comfort, emotional, and spiritual care to both the patient and their family members.
Length of Care
Palliative care is an ongoing service and may take place for an undetermined length of time. It may begin at any time during a patient’s chronic illness and may continue even alongside active treatment. On the contrary, hospice care is a short-term service that begins when the patient has about six months or less to live and is expected to last until the end of life.
Cost of Care
Palliative care is usually covered through a patient’s health insurance, including Medicaid and Medicare. Hospice care, on the other hand, is typically almost always fully covered by Medicare and Medicaid or insurance policies, which can help ease the burden of costs for the patient and their family.
When it comes to palliative versus hospice care, the diferences may seem small, but they are incredibly impactful. Palliative care is focused on symptom management and improving the quality of life through holistic care. Hospice care is focused on enhancing quality of life during end-of-life care.
Whatever care you decide to choose, it’s important to remember that you have choices and that you can make informed decisions by discussing options with healthcare providers you trust. Whether the decision is palliative or hospice, this end-of-life care is all about providing relief, comfort, and support to both patients and their families.

Tingling hands and feet can be a disconcerting and uncomfortable experience, and for some individuals, it can be a chronic issue that afects their daily lives. While it may seem like a minor inconvenience, tingling in the hands and feet can actually indicate an underlying health issue. In this article, we’ll explore the potential causes of tingling hands and feet, as well as the available treatments.
Tere are several reasons why someone may experience tingling in their hands and feet, and in many cases, it can be a result of nerve damage or compression. Tis occurs when the nerves that transmit sensory information between the extremities and the brain are impinged upon, leading to a “pins and needles” sensation. One common cause of nerve damage is repetitive stress, which can occur due to activities such as typing, playing video games, or using handheld tools for extended periods.
In addition to nerve damage, tingling in the hands and feet can also be caused by a defciency in essential vitamins and minerals. Vitamin B12 and magnesium are two nutrients that are particularly important for nerve function, and a lack of either can cause tingling and numbness in the extremities. Other potential causes of tingling hands and feet include diabetes, hypothyroidism, alcoholism, and even certain viral infections.
TINGLING Hands and Feet
Depending on the underlying cause of the tingling, there are several diferent treatment options available. If nerve damage is to blame, it’s important to take steps to alleviate the pressure on the afected nerves. Tis can include wearing wrist braces while typing or performing other repetitive tasks, taking breaks to stretch and rest the afected limbs, and avoiding activities that aggravate the tingling.
Treating nutrient defciencies can also help to alleviate tingling in the hands and feet. For example, increasing your intake of vitamin B12-rich foods such as meat, eggs, and dairy products, or taking a B12 supplement can help to replenish your body’s stores of this essential nutrient. Similarly, incorporating magnesium-rich foods like spinach, almonds, and avocados into your diet can help to improve nerve function and alleviate tingling.
In some cases, medication may be necessary to treat the underlying condition causing the tingling. For individuals with diabetes, for example, carefully managing blood sugar levels can go a long way in preventing nerve damage and subsequent tingling. In more severe cases, drugs such as anti-infammatory medications or nerve pain medications may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms.

In addition to these conventional treatments, there are also several alternative therapies that may be efective in relieving tingling in the hands and feet. One such therapy is acupuncture, which involves the insertion of fne needles into specifc points on the body to alleviate pain and other symptoms. Massage therapy, chiropractic care, and yoga may also be efective in reducing nerve compression and restoring proper function.
Ultimately, the most efective treatment for tingling hands and feet will depend on the underlying cause of the symptoms. However, taking steps to improve overall health and wellness can also go a long way in preventing the development of tingling and other nerve-related issues. Engaging in regular exercise, getting adequate sleep, and eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables can help to support nerve function and improve overall health.
In conclusion, tingling in the hands and feet can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience, but there are several potential causes and treatments to consider. If you’re experiencing tingling, it’s important to speak to a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause
and develop an efective treatment plan. By implementing lifestyle changes, alternative therapies, and appropriate medication, it’s possible to alleviate symptoms and maintain proper nerve function, leading to improved overall health and wellness.

Firefies vs Lightning Bugs
As summer nights settle in, there is a magical display of glowing creatures that light up the darkness. Tese insects are commonly known as frefies or lightning bugs, and they have captured the curiosity and fascination of people for centuries. But, have you ever wondered about the diference between them? Are they the same species or diferent? Which one is better? In this article, we will delve into the fery debate and explore the facts behind frefies versus lightning bugs.
Firstly, let’s clear up any doubts about the names. Firefies and lightning bugs are two common names given to the same family of insects, Lampyridae. Te name frefy is more common in the northern and western parts of the
United States, while lightning bug is more commonly used in the southern parts. However, the diference in nomenclature doesn’t change their fascinating behavior of bioluminescence- the ability to produce light using chemical reactions.
Firefies and lightning bugs both use bioluminescence for diferent purposes. Firefies use their glowing light as a signal to attract mates. Teir unique pattern of fashing light, a species-specifc code, helps them to fnd a mate during breeding season. Whereas, lightning bugs use their light as a defensive mechanism against predators. Teir fashing light sends a signal to predators to maintain distance from them and avoid getting eaten. Te light is produced through a chemical reaction that
20 50+ Living | July 2023
requires oxygen, a luciferase enzyme, and a compound called luciferin stored in specialized cells, called photocytes, in their abdomen.
Did you know there are over 2000 species of frefies and lightning bugs worldwide? Each species has a unique fashing pattern, color, and behavior that helps them to distinguish between diferent species. In North America, the most common species of lightning bugs is the Photinus pyralis, which has a yellow-green light that fashes every two seconds. In contrast, frefies like the Photuris lucicrescens emit a green-yellow light with a double fash pattern, while the Phausis reticulata has an orange-red light that fashes continuously.
One interesting fact about frefies and lightning bugs is that they have varying lifespans depending upon the species. Te adult stage of some species lasts for only a few days, while others can survive for several months. Te lifespan of a frefy and lightning bug is also infuenced by environmental conditions like temperature, humidity, and daylight length.
Now, let’s address the most important question of this debate - are frefies better than lightning bugs? Or vice versa? Although both these insects are simply marvelous, there is more to explore in their comparative study.
Firefies are generally considered more attractive because of their pulsating light show that instantly mesmerizes anyone who sets their eyes on it. Teir light display is also synchronized and visible in a larger area of the sky, making for a more spectacular view. Whereas, lightning bugs are less intense in their light display, consisting of a simple fash that can only be seen by someone close to them.
Despite this, lightning bugs have a greater role in the ecosystem, serving as an essential part of the food chain for many other animals. Teir ability to produce light is also signifcant in scientifc research, especially in biomedical research areas such as cancer detection or drug development.
Another interesting fact about these insects is their ability to communicate through light signals. Tere have been studies that have observed frefies and lightning
bugs using their fash patterns to exchange messages with their competitors or potential mates. Tis mode of communication is essential for their survival and breeding success, and scientists continue to study it for further insight into insect neurobiology.
In conclusion, both frefies and lightning bugs are fascinating creatures that have captured the hearts of many nature enthusiasts. Tey are intelligent and use bioluminescence for various functions, including communication, mating, and defense. However, the debate of frefies versus lightning bugs is not about superiority. Tey both play an essential role in the ecosystem and have unique features that make them stand out. It’s a matter of personal preference, depending on what you fnd more attractive.
Tis summer, when you’re outside in the nighttime air, take a moment to appreciate the glowing display of these insects. Take a closer look and enjoy their mesmerizing light shows. Whether you prefer frefies or lightning bugs, there’s one thing we can all agree on – no summer night is complete without their enchanting presence.
