WHY SOUTH AFRICAN WINES?
South Africa can boast more than 300 years of wine making history. And South African winemaking is ofen said to link Old World Style characterized by lighter-bodied, lower in alcohol content with brighter acidity, and more earth-driven favors with New World Style that shows fuller-bodied, higher in alcohol with lower acidity making the wines much riper and richer on the palate. South African wines are made following New World techniques but are Old World in style!
Most South Africa’s wine-producing regions have a Mediterranean climate resulting from the meeting of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. With vineyards close to the coast, cooling breezes bring moderate temperatures dissuading frosts in the crucial stages of vine development.
Varietals that have been widely available in this country from South Africa include:
Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. But there are so many more!
Te history of South African wine making starts with Dutch settlers planting vines in the 1650s. Tree decades later, the Huguenots arrived from France bringing viticultural skills and setting up shop. Te South African wine industry was severely impacted by phylloxera in the 1860s with farmers surviving by planting easy to grow varietals. As producers worked to improve quality, the industry was dealt another blow, reaching an all-time low due to apartheid politics. Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990 and subsequent election as President reinvigorated the industry.
Since the end of apartheid, the South African wine industry has found international acclaim for its wide variety of styles and varietals and is now one of the most prominent wine-producing countries in the Southern Hemisphere.
By Gina TrippiToday, traditional varietals are still grown but farmers have added more French varietals including Semillon, Malbec Roussanne and Tannat. Metro Wines has found quality expressions of these varietals through Sa-vor, a small import and distribution business, passionate about promoting South African wine and the people that produce it.
Te 2021 Malbec from Mt. Vernon presents a dark, magenta core with a wide, bright rim and a ripe berry nose packed with mulberry and blackberry followed by earthy and oaky notes. Deep, rich and full on the palate, chocolate and ripe plum add complexity to this full bodied wine with a solid backbone packed with favor. Mt Vernon is a small but frequently awarded winery in the Western Cape.
Te 2021 Single Vineyard Pella White Granite Sémillon ofers crisp acidity and aromas of citrus and melon when young and, when matured, the wine develops honey and nutty favors with a rich creaminess. Tis Sémillon is good now but can age deliciously up to 20 years in a bottle!
Te farm where the winery sits dates back to 1682. Pella focuses on handcrafed wines from specially chosen single vineyards throughout the Western Cape. Pella, meaning “place of gathering”, refers to the union of hand chosen terroirs and old vines.

MOVING TO MEDICARE FROM ACA
Lots of us are becoming eligible for Medicare every month and we are confused to say the least. As an agent for twenty-fve years, I have heard the most common questions folks have. Rather than starting with all the technical stuf, let’s see if I can help bring some sunlight into this process. As you approach age 65, let’s say that you have coverage on an employer plan or Obamacare i.e. Marketplace plan. One option is Medicare Advantage Plans. Tese look very similar to what you currently have : copay’s, deductibles, medical maximum out of pocket, networks for doctors, RX drugs covered and the ‘ extras ‘ dental, vision and hearing. All at a low or zero cost to you monthly beyond your Medicare Part B premium. Tat said, there are important diferences you will need to understand. Alternatively, we have the choice of MediGap i.e. Supplement plans. Tese are stronger for the medical coverage and work for any doctor who takes Medicare but has a more expensive premium. More about this in subsequent articles or on our website below.
A BIG Diference between over and under 65 plans: RX and medical costs are not in the same bucket. With under 65 plans, the copays for RX drugs count to the same maximum as your medical costs. Under Medicare, RX is entirely separate. Good news, in 2025, the out pocket maximum for Rx with Medicare is scheduled to be $2000.
Transition to Medicare from Marketplace i.e. Obamacare plans can be a confusing process. Be aware of the very important details. Te rules state that: if you are eligible for Medicare, then you are no longer eligible to receive a subsidy to lower your premium. Tis change afects not only your medical insurance but also your tax return.
Many folks of more modest income receive a substantial subsidy as well as enhanced benefts. Even though it may look better if you keep that coverage, you lose the tax credit and premiums for a 65 year old person are very, very expensive. Others of you with higher premiums will fnd Medicare to be a real plus to your bank account.
You should start to enroll in Medicare A & AMP; B three months before you turn 65. See www.ssa.gov and look for “Sign up for Medicare”. Tis will generate your coverage and your Medicare Benefciary Id (MBI). You need this to enroll in any plan: Advantage, Part D Rx or MediGap. Finally … Why is my mailbox full of junk ? Tis is the biggest question I get. Your birthdate is accessible to marketing organizations. Insurance companies want you to sign up with them. Independent agents like myself represent a number of diferent companies and plans. We are licensed as “fduciaries”; meaning that we are obligated to provide the best solution for our client’s individual needs. Within all that mail, watch for the ofcialcommunications from Social Security and Medicare.
UNIQUE WAYS TO SHOW DAD YOU CARE
Father’s Day rolls around once a year, and it’s the perfect time to show Dad just how much he means to you. Sure, you could go with the usual tie or “World’s Best Dad” mug, but why not shake things up this year? Here are some awesome ideas to make your dad feel appreciated and loved on his special day.
MasterChef for a Day
Does your dad enjoy a good meal? How about ditching the reservations this year and cooking up his favorite dish at home? Whether it’s barbecue ribs or a gourmet burger, put your chef hat on and surprise him with a homemade feast. Not only is it a thoughtful gesture, but it’s also a great way to bond over food.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
Create a scrapbook flled with memories of you and your dad. Include photos, ticket stubs from concerts or games you’ve attended together, and any other mementos you’ve collected over the years. Add in personal notes and funny anecdotes to remind him of all the good times you’ve shared.
DIY Dad
Is your dad the handy type? Tere are plenty of DIY projects you can do together. Whether it’s building a birdhouse, fxing up an old car, or painting the fence, spending the day working on a project with him can be a fun and rewarding experience.
The Great Outdoors
If your dad loves nature, plan a day out in the great outdoors. Go hiking, fshing, or even camping if you’re up for it. It’s a fantastic way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and spend some quality time together.
A Custom Playlist
Create a playlist of songs that remind you of your dad or ones that you know he loves. Include some tracks from his younger days and some from yours. Music has a special way of bringing people together, and it can be a great way for both of you to discover new tunes.
Learn Something New Together
Sign up for a class or workshop that interests both of you. Tis could be anything from pottery to cooking, to learning how to code. It’s a unique way to spend time together and learn a new skill in the process.
A Day Off
Sometimes, the best gif you can give is the gif of relaxation. Take over his chores for the day, and make sure he spends Father’s Day doing what he loves, be it reading, watching his favorite sports, or just lounging in the backyard.
No matter how you choose to show your appreciation this Father’s Day, the most important thing is to make it personal and heartfelt. It’s the thought and efort that count, and no doubt, he’ll cherish whatever you decide to do for him. Here’s to all the amazing dads out there – Happy Father’s Day!
Local Music Makers
Music Artists In Residence
By Peggy RatuszIt can be challenging for local musicians who play routine weekly, bi-weekly or monthly gigs at clubs, pubs, hotels and breweries. Obviously, these regular nights either catch on or they don’t.
With so many venues, so many local musicians and so many touring acts playing on any given night of the week, a live music goer might just think they can wait and go next week. Understandably, the longevity of a residency hinges on the numbers. A steady gig can easily become wonky if the numbers start to fuctuate. And there are times when a regular showcase or series has good numbers and still a proprietor might cancel it.
I am notoriously anxious and at the same time eager when I’m driving to my regular bi-weekly and monthly gigs. Ofen I meditate or pray that people will show up! Again!
Tere are venues with built-in rotating clientele, like hotels with proven high volume guest occupancy. Tese types of continuous stints are less stressful for your average band leader. But it’s still not a guarantee and a shrewd band leader knows to expect the unexpected. Balancing new material with proven audience favorites when constructing
a set list every week is a skill every band leader knows how to do well.
Booking guest musicians is a proven way to keep people intrigued enough to return again and again. Fan bases grow; everyone wins when this collaborative formula works as intended.
So this month we celebrate the diligent, innovative music artists in residence; the tenured entertainers, these passionate pied pipers. Tey know just what it takes to keep us coming back for more.
Hosted by the most respected musician in Asheville; number one son, Josh Blake has curated the longest standing weekly jam: Te Tuesday Night Funk Jam at Asheville Music Hall. Tey happen every week starting at 10pm. I would be remiss not to mention in the same breath, Te Early Tuesday Jam which happens just beforehand, and in the same building, starting at 8pm.
One of the best places to be on a Wednesday evening is the Town Pump in Black Mountain where award winning songstress and songwriter, Ashley Heath plays with a
diferent celebrity each week. It’s worth the beautiful drive out there, for anyone contemplating the distance! It starts at 8:00pm.
Mr. Jimmy’s Friday Night Blues is one that always sells out. Jimmy is the quintessential traditional electric Blues guitarist who invites a player or singer each week to join him and a house band for 3 hours of nothin’ but the Blues, baby! Where? Te Asheville Guitar Bar - When? 7:30pm. Te place flls up so get there early and save your seat!
Jason DeCristofaro is an instrumental multiinstrumentalist. Celebrating 10 years of hosting the Wednesday Jazz Night series at Southern Appalachian Brewery in Hendersonville, it’s another weekly ofering that draws in patrons by the throngs. 7pm is when it starts.
And speaking of Jazz music, every Monday and Tuesday, Little Jumbo is the place to be to hear some of the masters. A plethora of scheduled instrumentalists come out to jam and the fact that it’s free almost feels like cheating. Tese Jazz cats and kittens got chops! Downbeat is 7pm.
One of the newest residencies gaining momentum is Melissa McKinney’s Superwoman Sundays at One World West. Tere’s always an incredible Shero headliner from 2pm-3pm and an open mic follows from 3pm-5pm. Check. It. Out.
5 Walnut Wine Bar in downtown Asheville, has been a coveted place to play since it opened in 2010. Tey are a full-on internship venue every night of the week. Mondays, it’s Caromia with Rahm & Friends, Tuesday it’s Te John Henry’s, Wednesdays it’s Bam-A-Lam, Tursdays it’s Pleasure Chest, Every Other Saturday it’s Will Hartz and on Sundays it’s Cynthia McDermott’s Mood Ring. Check their website for start times.
Tere are oodles of open mics to choose from, usually happening at the beginning of the week. You can check out all the places in Asheville where a novice or professional can play a song or two in front of a forgiving audience. Follow Open Mic Asheville on Facebook.
Te latest open mic forum happens the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at Te River Arts District Brewing Company 7:00pm-9:00pm, and it’s hosted by the beautiful and wonderful, Jenny Bradley.
Afer a long week of working your fngers to the bone, you might need a warm vibe; someplace where the cocktails go down easy. At Te Hound, almost every Friday night, you’ll fnd soothing, deep Jazzy grooves with Te Nighttime Noon Band. Tere’s nothing Reggie Headen’s voice can’t heal. 8pm-10pm.
Te Peacock Palace is what Simeon Hickman and Louly Peacock call their ongoing songwriter series that takes place in their home. A portion of the money raised goes to a local charity. To keep up with when they happen and to RSVP, visit their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/ Louly.Peacock
Rock n’ Roll guitarist and singer, Sal Landers launched her Party RX band at Te Asheville Guitar Bar not long afer moving here from California. Tat frst gig spawned her “Second Saturdays” series there. Te party begins at 7:30pm.
If it’s Tursday, that means Kendra and Friends is happening at the Root Bar on the East side. Te cool and groovy collaborations go from 6pm-8pm.
Trombonist Jonathan Lloyd hosts the incredibly popular Mashup Mondays at One World West at 8pm. With a 3 piece horn section, kit and conga, guitar and keys, you’re gonna-wanna dance. Each week you’ll hear invited guest instrumentalists and musician-singers. Get there early.
If you go out to hear live music with any consistency, don’t forget about those of us making music at the same venue week afer week, month afer month in hopes that you’ll come see and hear us as ofen as you can. Spreading the word and sharing social media posts is free, but doing so can make and keep a musician in residence.
Peggy’s residencies and regular gigs:
First and third Tursdays, 7pm-9pm – Acoustic Blues with Kelly Jones & Peggy Ratusz, Te River Arts District Brewing Company
Te frst Saturday of the month, 4pm-7pm –Te Invitational Blues Showcase, One World West
Te last Sunday of every month – 4pm-6pm – Sunday Funday with Adam Rose and Bob Songster, Southern Appalachian Brewery.

Dementia vs. Alzheimer’s:
UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES
When it comes to cognitive decline and memory loss, the terms “dementia” and “Alzheimer’s” are ofen mentioned together, leading to a common misconception that they are one and the same. However, understanding the distinction between these two conditions is crucial for caregivers, family members, and health professionals as they seek to provide the most appropriate care and support. Tis article aims to clarify the diferences between dementia and Alzheimer’s, providing essential knowledge for those impacted by these conditions.
What is Dementia?
Dementia is a broad term used to describe a decline in cognitive function severe enough to interfere with daily life. It represents a wide range of specifc medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, characterized by impairments in memory, communication abilities, and problem-solving. Dementia is not a single disease but rather a general term that encompasses various diseases and conditions that lead to cognitive decline.
Key Points About Dementia:
• Symptom Cluster: Dementia signifes a group of symptoms afecting intellectual and social abilities.
• Multiple Causes: It can result from various conditions, the most common being Alzheimer’s disease, but also includes vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia, among others.
• Progressive Nature: Most dementias are progressive, meaning the symptoms start slowly and gradually worsen.
What
is Alzheimer’s Disease?
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for an estimated 60% to 80% of cases. It is a specifc disease that attacks the brain’s nerve cells, leading to loss of memory, reasoning, language skills, and social abilities. Alzheimer’s disease progresses in stages, from mild confusion and forgetfulness to complete dependence on caregivers in its later stages.
Key Points About Alzheimer’s
Disease:
• Brain Changes: Alzheimer’s is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain, leading to nerve cell damage.
• Memory Loss: One of the hallmark symptoms of Alzheimer’s is memory loss, particularly forgetting recently learned information.
• Age Factor: While age is the biggest risk factor, Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging.
Distinguishing Between Dementia and Alzheimer’s
To diferentiate between dementia and Alzheimer’s, it is helpful to think of dementia as an umbrella term that covers a wide spectrum of cognitive impairments, with Alzheimer’s being a specifc condition under that umbrella. In essence, while everyone with Alzheimer’s has dementia, not everyone with dementia has Alzheimer’s.
Understanding the diferences between the two is critical for diagnosis and treatment. While there is currently no cure for most types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s, early diagnosis and intervention can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
For caregivers, family members, and health professionals, discerning between dementia and Alzheimer’s is essential for providing targeted care and support to those afected. By recognizing that Alzheimer’s is but one type of dementia, they can better understand the complexity of cognitive decline and tailor their caregiving approaches accordingly.
Supporting a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s requires patience, education, and empathy. Armed with the correct information, caregivers can ensure their loved ones receive the most appropriate interventions and support services to live as fully as possible.
“I like to say that there are only four kinds of people in the world. Tose who have been caregivers. Tose who are currently caregivers. Tose who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.” Rosalyn Carter

The Transformative Power of Solo Travel
by Laurie RichardoneEmbarking on a solo journey can be a transformative experience, especially for those in their ffies and beyond.
Venturing into the unknown solo requires a willingness to embrace uncertainty. What better time than when we have the wisdom, and experience to take with us?
Let’s uncover how traveling solo empowers us, and can transform our lives. It ofers us the opportunity for personal growth, and a deeper connection with the world, as we do not have the distractions of others. It allows us to experience unique favors and cultural cooking techniques, as food is deeply intertwined with the history and tradition of each region.
From a personal perspective, solo travel has become an exhilarating journey of self-discovery. Each trip I get to know myself better, as it encourages introspection, and time for refection, without the infuence of others. It brings the chance to step outside our comfort zone, and fully immerse ourselves in a diferent culture. It removes the familiar safety nets and forces us to confront challenges and uncertainties.
As we approach the golden years the world can become our playground. Whether we revisit beloved destinations, or venturing into uncharted territory, solo travel allows us to immerse ourselves fully in the present moment. It gives us that chance to reconnect with ourselves in a new way, as we are free from routine, and the expectation of others.
Not all people get the travel bug. I have had it ever since I was a kid. On Saturdays, I used to go with my Aunt Betty to book her world travels. I would look at all the posters wondering what it would be like to travel to these mysterious places. I was curious about the world outside of Brooklyn where I grew up. Te inspiration also came from growing up in a family of cooks, where we had a love afair with food. Tat experience infuenced my desire to explore other cultures, through the diversity of food, that travel ofers. It expands our palettes, discovering new favors that we might not have experienced hadn’t we had the courage to go alone.
If you think about it, we are more focused when we travel alone. We have the opportunity to give our attention to what interests us. It also encourages interaction with locals. Whether having an in-depth conversation at the market or exploring of-thebeaten-path destinations, you gain a deeper understanding of a region’s history, food, and way of life.
Tis worldliness builds self-reliance and independence. It gives us invaluable lessons learned, and connections made along the way, that we might not otherwise have. Tese unexpected encounters can alter the trajectory of our lives, inspiring a new path we wouldn’t have taken had we not dared to go it alone.
I love the quote by Paulo Coelho, the author of Te Alchemist, “Be willing to go alone sometimes. You don’t need permission to grow“
I invite you to go it alone and share your solo travel stories. Tose shared experiences will foster a sense of community and inspiration among fellow adventures. Our stories allow us to connect on a deeper level, which can foster an understanding of our fellow brothers and sisters of diferent cultures. By traveling we see the world through someone else’s eyes, broadening our perspective. Our travel stories can leave a lasting legacy, preserving our memories, values, and lessons learned for future generations.
Whether your inspiration for solo travel is to admire iconic landmarks, explore hidden gems, or the diversity of favors, it can transform our lives.
Pack your bags, set out on the open road, and let the transformative power of solo travel guide you to new horizons.

Crispy Tofu and Spring Pea Shoot Pesto
Ingredients ~ Serves 2
1 block of extra frm tofu
1 tbsp. arrowroot
1 tsp. ground turmeric
1 tsp. smoked paprika
1/2 tsp. sea salt, to taste
1 tbsp. olive oil, or coconut oil
1 cup fresh spring pea shoots
1 bunch spring broccoli
2 cloves shaved garlic
1/2 lemon, juiced walnut oil to fnish, or extra virgin olive oil.
Method for Tofu
Slice the tofu block into 4 slices. Lay slices on paper towels to remove all the moisture. Do this step twice. Tis ensures crispy tofu. Cut the slices into large cubes and set aside.
In a mixing bowl, add the arrowroot, turmeric, salt, and paprika. Shake the bowl to blend. Add the cubes of tofu, and shake the bowl to coat the tofu. It is best not to mix this with your hands, as it adds moisture to the tofu.
Heat a large nonstick pan on medium to high heat. A cast iron pan works as well.
Add the oil of choice. Add the cubed tofu and saute for 5 minutes. Flip tofu over gently, with a silicone spatula. Saute for 5 minutes, or until you get a crispy exterior.
Method for Pea Shoot Pesto
1 big bunch of Spring Pea shoots, or arugula (stems removed)
1 clove green garlic
1/2 lemon, juiced
1 cup pine nuts, toasted, or walnuts
1 cup Parmigiano or asiago, grated (nutritional yeast for vegan) 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
Blend all the ingredients in a food processor. Do not overmix, as it will make the pesto bitter.Taste it for seasoning. It can be made ahead. Refrigerate for up to 3 days.
Method for Broccoli & Pea Shoots
Saute the broccoli in olive oil, with shaved garlic for 5 minutes. Add salt to taste. Squeeze fresh lemon over the broccoli. In a small bowl, dress the pea shoots with sea salt, and a squeeze of lemon.
Assembly
In a shallow bowl, add the broccoli. Lay the crispy tofu over the broccoli. Dollop with pesto. Cover the dish with the fresh pea shoots. Drizzle walnut oil over the dish, if using. Gives the dish a delicate nutty favor.

Where Do I Even Begin? GUIDE TO LOSING WEIGHT
Alright, so you’ve decided it’s time to lose weight. Fantastic! But then, you’re hit with the overwhelming question, “Where do I even start?” Te world of weight loss is like stepping into a wild jungle – there’s tons of information, a diet for every day of the week, and way too many opinions.
Fear not! We’re here to carve out a clear path through the jungle for you. Losing weight doesn’t have to feel like deciphering an ancient code. Here’s a down-to-earth guide to kick-start your weight loss journey without getting lost in the details.
It’s All About the Basics
First things frst, forget the fancy diets and complex rules. Weight loss boils down to one basic principle: burning more calories than you consume. It’s like your bank account; if you spend more than you deposit, your balance decreases. In this case, your ‘balance’ is the excess weight you’re aiming to shed.
Adjust Your Eating Habits
• Eat Mindfully: Pay attention to what you eat and enjoy each bite. Sometimes, we eat just because it’s mealtime, not because we’re actually hungry.
• Portion Control: You don’t have to give up your favorite foods; just eat them in smaller amounts. Tis isn’t just about eating less – it’s about eating right.
• Hydration Station: Before you grab a snack, drink a glass of water. Tirst is ofen confused with hunger. Plus, water has zero calories – talk about a win-win!
Incorporate Activity Into Your Daily Routine
• Move More: Park further away from the entrance, take the stairs, have a dance party in your living room. Find ways to sneak more activity into your day.
• Find an Exercise You Love: If the thought of running makes you want to run away, don’t do it! Tere are countless ways to get moving. Try out diferent activities until you fnd one you genuinely enjoy.
Set Realistic Goals
Sure, setting a goal to climb Mount Everest next week when you haven’t even hiked up a small hill isn’t exactly setting yourself up for success. Te same goes for weight loss. Keeping Your Cut Flowers FABULOUSLY FRESH
Hey there, fower afcionados! If you’re anything like me, you probably love having a vase of vibrant, fresh-cut fowers to light up your room. But isn’t it just the worst when they start drooping way sooner than you expected? Well, worry no more! I’ve compiled some tried-and-true tips to keep your blooms looking perky and fabulous for way longer than you thought possible. Trust me, with a little TLC, your fowers can be the long-lasting companions you’ve always wanted.
Snip, Snip – The Art of the Cut
First things frst, give your fowers a proper welcome by giving them a good trim. Use sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut about an inch of the stems at a 45-degree angle. Why the angle, you ask? It increases the surface area
for water intake and stops the ends from resting fat on the bottom of the vase, ensuring your fowery friends get all the hydration they need.
Water Wisdom
Fill your vase with lukewarm water, as most fowers drink that up the best. Add in that fower food packet that comes with bouquets—it’s not just “forist fuf.” It actually helps! If you’ve lost the packet in your excitement, don’t fret. You can DIY a nify substitute by mixing ¼ teaspoon of bleach, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and a few drops of clear vinegar into the water. Tis concoction works wonders by feeding your fowers, keeping the water clean, and fghting of bacteria.
Location, Location, Location!
Just like in real estate, location matters for your blooms too. Keep your vase out of direct sunlight, away from vents, and far from fresh fruit. Yes, you heard that right—fruit! Ripe fruits release tiny amounts of ethylene gas that can make your fowers age before their time.
Change is Good
Be kind to your petals and change their water every two days or so. It might sound like overkill, but fresh water keeps bacteria at bay and your fowers sipping happily. When you do, give the stems another quick trim to keep them open for hydration.
Leaf Me Alone
Make sure there are no leaves below the waterline in your vase. Leaves submerged in water can rot quickly, leading to bacterial growth that’s harmful to your blooms. Just pluck of any leaves that will be under the water before arranging your fowers in the vase.
Make it Last
Got your fowers looking picture-perfect? Awesome! To make that freshness last even longer, consider giving them a nightly chill. Flowers love a cooler environment, so placing them in the fridge overnight can work wonders. Just make sure to move the lefover takeout to make some room.
And there you have it, fellow fower lovers—your comprehensive guide to prolonging the life of your precious cut fowers. With these tips, your blooms will be sticking around, adding color and fragrance to your space for as long as possible. Now go forth and keep those bouquets fourishing!
