When Love Gets Tough

Everyone vows they will never put their loved one in a nursing home. We all hope we can keep that promise, and that our lives may be enriched for many years.

Making the Decision

It is then that we must decide who we can trust to help us care for our beloved. You’ll find that when your loved one comes to live at Flesher’s Fairview Health & Retirement Center, your family becomes our family, carrying on our family tradition of a family serving families for over three decades. pen the door and walk into the Spice & Tea Exchange on Haywood Street downtown Asheville. First the delicious fragrances will stop you: sweet, spicy, savory, all mouth-watering. Then the rich colors entice you further into the space where Jill and Bob Long have created a shop stocked with 80 culinary blends; herbal, green and black loose-leaf teas; flavored salts and sugars; even a whole pepper and paprika wall, including both Spanish and Hungarian varieties.

And they’ve done this at an age when most people are slowing down, beginning to consider their retirement plans. A few years back, the couple, who are avid motorcyclists, were in Daytona for bike week. They journeyed the short distance to St. Augustine and, as Bob tells it, “happened upon a spice shop. It was one of those things where I looked around and thought, this would work in Asheville.” The owner offered them a brochure,

telling them the company was beginning to franchise. Bob, who was getting a bit burned out on his day job as an engineer in Nuclear Medicine, sent them an email and received the response that they were very interested in getting into western North Carolina. Jill interjects with a laugh that “this was in 2009; friends looked hard at us and asked, ‘what are you doing, opening a shop in the middle of a recession?’” But the timing was right and there was availability downtown or in Biltmore Village. Haywood Street was an upscale location and the former Ariel Gallery space was empty. “We really liked this space; a friend whose accountant has an office in the upper level had heard that in summer the sidewalks were jammed with tourists. The space was too big for us, but the landlord said he’d been thinking of dividing the space in half.” With that issue solved, they knew it was the location for them.

Bob Long, Co-owner The beauty of being part of a larger organization is that they don’t have to order large amounts of any one spice so what they have in store is always fresh. The company has 32 people who research the products available to the franchisee, from teas to salts to sugars. And, the company buys organic and Fair Trade whenever possible. Jill stresses that “90% of the custom blends we have are handmade here in the store. We buy the fruit locally, peel, dehydrate and grind it.” Several of their blends contain fresh zest like the aromatic Carolina Sunshine that is based on lemon, orange and lime zest. “When we opened, we were the ninth store in the company (there will be about 80 stores by the end of this year). Although it is a franchise, we are independently owned and operated.” Both of them often work alongside their employees—they typically have four except during the holidays. Bob retired from his day job in 2015 and Jill is still in private practice as a mental health therapist. “I see clients several days per week and

Bob explains, “we finally sold both. It was just too much travel up and down the road. You have to hire and train employees, trying to find those who would run it like you would. It’s not easy to supervise them remotely.” Also, they have a motor home and like to travel. Besides, he’s retired, right! They are family.” Since the shop is open every day, they juggle the schedule so that everyone has two consecutive days off each week. While the couple know the importance of connecting consistently with the business, which includes doing the bookkeeping in order to stay in touch with what’s happening, they also know the importance of connecting with the larger business community. Insurance Made Easy: Term Life vs. Whole Life Policies

L

ife insurance can be a difficult subject to approach, and it’s perhaps one of the most complicated areas of personal finance. However, at the most basic level, it’s not as complex as you might think. Most life insurance policies come in one of two main kinds, term life and whole life. What’s the difference?

Term Life Insurance With term life insurance, your payments and coverage are limited to a certain period of time. This could be anywhere between ten and thirty years, or until you reach a specific age. The main use of this kind of insurance is to provide coverage until your financial commitments have lessened. For example, you may keep the policy until your mortgage has been paid off, or until your children have finished their education. At the end of the insurance term, your payments will stop, your coverage will end, and you won’t receive any lump sum in cash. The time-limited nature of term life insurance generally means the premiums are much lower than with the more open-ended whole life insurance.

Whole Life Insurance As the name suggests, whole life policies provide continuous Page 8 | 50+ Living | May 2019

protection for the rest of your life, or until you cancel the policy. Importantly, the premiums you pay will build up a cash value in the policy as well as providing coverage. You can access this cash value at any time and for any reason, or you can let it accumulate to provide a guaranteed income in retirement. This combination of coverage and investment makes whole life a very attractive type of policy. However, it comes at the cost of significantly higher monthly premiums.

Which Kind Should You Choose? Before taking out any insurance policy, it’s a good idea to get professional advice. But in general, if you’re looking for a lowcost way of providing protection for your family should you pass prematurely, term life is the most usual choice. But if you’re looking to invest for your future as well as enjoying comprehensive coverage in the meantime, a whole life policy is generally the better option. Of course, there’s much more to selecting a life insurance policy than those two simple choices. But once you understand the main kinds that are available, you can work with an insurance adviser to find the specific policy that’s right for your situation. Ee

ore people than ever have a problem with dry eyes, which causes symptoms of itching, burning, scratchiness, redness, blurring, and light sensitivity. This chronic feeling of eye discomfort is often called dry eye syndrome. It can be a chronic problem that resists traditional treatment. If you suffer from dry eyes, a look at the many causes and treatment options can help you find the solution that works for you.

Causes of Dry Eyes Dry eye syndrome can be caused by environmental factors, behavioral factors, and physical factors. In some cases, these factors can work together to create conditions that cause the problem to continue. • Aging can cause less moisture to be formed in the eyes.

• Certain diseases can cause dryness of the eyes, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome and certain vascular conditions.

• Some medications, such as antihistamines, can cause dryness of the eyes. • Problems of the eyelids can cause incomplete blinking of the eyes, which leads to dryness. • Living and working in a very dry indoor or outdoor environment can cause eye dryness. • Work activities that cause the eyes to look at the same spot for long periods of time can also cause dryness. • Hormonal changes of pregnancy can cause dryness of the eyes.

Home Care For minor cases of dry eyes, many people find that increasing the humidity in their environment helps to provide more moisture and greater comfort. Taking more breaks from close work or the computer monitor can allow more normal blinking activity and greater eye comfort. Warm water compresses on the eyes periodically throughout the day can also help to relieve dryness and scratchiness. Scrubbing the eyelids with no-tears baby shampoo can also help to create a thicker lipid layer that helps to soothe eyes. Over-the-counter artificial tears compounds and lubricants, applied throughout the day, can also be helpful in relieving dryness and burning. Lubricating ointments are also available, but these often cause blurring that makes them only useful at night.

Medical Treatments For Dry Eyes Punctal plugs are silicone gel plugs that are inserted in the corners of the eyes to prevent draining of tears so that they are in contact with the eye surface for a longer period. Insertion is a minor procedure that can be done in the doctor’s office. Your opthalmologist may also suggest prescription medications that help to produce more tears. If there is a problem with the eyelids or the eye surface, the physician will also treat the condition to help provide greater overall comfort. A review of any medications you are taking may indicate that a change is necessary to prevent drying of the eye fluids. Ee

Sandy’s Food for Thought The Benefits of Eating Kale By Sandy McCall

Do you often hear people say things similar to this? • Kale is tough • Kale tastes bitter • I know kale is good for me, but I don’t like it. Well, I think this Kale Salad recipe will change most of the doubters’ minds about kale. It did for me. Give it a try. The process includes marinating the chopped kale in lemon juice. Basically, the kale is “cooked” in the lemon juice and then it becomes tender. By adding a small amount of dried fruit, grated cheese and toasted nuts, this kale salad flavor is just wonderful.

Finely chop the kale leaves by hand or easily chop it in a food processor. Mix lemon juice and oil together. Pour over kale and stir to coat all leaves. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for 8-12 hours. When you are ready to finish making your kale salad, slice the almonds and toast them in a dry cast iron skillet until lightly browned. Watch them carefully. Cool. Add all remaining ingredients to kale and mix thoroughly. Refrigerate. The flavors in this kale salad really come together after it sits in the refrigerator for an hour or so. And this salad keeps quite awhile in the refrigerator. A great way to enjoy kale! researchers have pointed toward regular physical exercise as a drug-alternative treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as James Hamblin of The Atlantic reports. The combination of good concentration and information retention can mean you end up working more efficiently, which can translate into more free time for what you truly enjoy.

3) You won’t just live life--you’ll actually enjoy it.

Reasons You Can’t Afford to Schedule Exercise Out of Your Life

I

By Wanda Marie

f you’re busier than ever these days, you’re admittedly not alone. Even so, a hectic schedule is not an excuse to cut workouts from your calendar. In fact, evidence suggests you might be shooting yourself in the foot by eliminating your trips to the gym. These are just some of the reasons why you need to keep workouts on your plate.

1) Regular exercise extends your life expectancy. According to the American Heart Association, for each hour of exercise you get, you can gain two hours of life expectancy. This phenomenon is due largely to the numerous physiological effects exercise has, such as keeping cholesterol and stress hormones under control. You’ll get back the time you put into your workouts and then some if you commit.

2) You can end up more productive. As Forbes’ contributor Jennifer Cohen describes, numerous research studies have tied exercise to better cognitive status and results. The endorphins (often referred to as feel-good chemicals) released when you exercise rev your memory into high gear, for example, and focus can be elevated for up to two hours after a workout session. In fact, these results are significant enough that Page 14 | 50+ Living | May 2019

Endorphins produced when you exercise don’t just elevate your focus and memory. They also affect your mood, reducing anxiety and stress. In particular, levels of oxytocin, the so-called “cuddle” or “love” hormone, tend to go up. Researchers point to this hormone as being especially critical for social well-being, connecting it to the ability to trust and connect with other people. With an improved sense of calm and stronger relationships, you might experience what you go through as more meaningful, remembering more of the good times you have.

4) Your energy can improve. Many people dismiss exercise as doable because they’re so tired from meeting all the legitimate responsibilities they have. As the Mayo Clinic asserts, however, exercise results in high levels of oxygen and nutrients being delivered to your tissues, improving your cardiovascular efficiency. It also is connected to falling asleep quickly and deeper sleep. The result is often a boost in energy, which can affect everything from your work to the pleasure you get during sexual encounters.

5) You’ll have another reason to be more confident. Exercise is always a journey even for professionals, the entire idea being to continually challenge yourself. With this in mind, maybe you aren’t ready to thrust an Olympic bar laden with plates over your head and do a full squat, but you can bet your getting-in-shape booty you can acknowledge the set of 5 nonweighted half squats you just tried out and survived. It’s more than possible to take the “I did it” from your workouts, even as a beginner, and translate that into an “I can” for any other area of your life. Not only that, but the compliments you’ll likely get about your improved energy, productivity, mood and physique can do wonders for your self-esteem.

6) You might end up more independent. Exercise can be a simple but highly effective treatment for a range of conditions. It can alleviate back pain from poor posture, for example, by improving flexibility, strengthening stabilizing muscles and correcting imbalances. With these problems under control, it’s easier to plan and venture out by yourself. Additionally, as you become stronger, you might find tasks you normally would need help with, such as carrying heavy groceries up the stairs to your apartment, aren’t an issue anymore. This doesn’t mean you have to refuse a hand when it’s offered to you, considerate acts of service demonstrate love. It simply means you don’t have to feel overly reliant and will have greater freedom in what you choose to do. That matters in today’s hyper-scheduled world where waiting for help can mean the loss of other opportunities.

Conclusion The modern world makes it easy to write exercise out of daily routines, but the reality is that regular physical activity delivers fabulous returns. You get back the time you put in and then some, reaping additional benefits that make life more enjoyable. If you have been putting off getting into a program, now is the moment to take charge and claim those advantages. Ee

Taylor’d with Style

Fetching Florals By JeanAnn Taylor

J

ust like perennial flowers returning year after year in our gardens, floral fashion makes a comeback each spring with energizing and cheerful prints and colors. The floral style trend never gets old or goes out of fashion because simply put, flowers are pretty. Flowers can represent many emotions: playful, edgy, romantic, modern, and feminine are just a few. Floral prints are available on a variety of materials including rayon, cotton, silk, chiffon, leather, and lace. With so many possibilities and ways to create fashionable floral looks, I thought it would be interesting to identify some of the many types of floral fabrics. Asian florals are credited with being the first floral fabric. During the 12th century, peonies, carnations, and cherry blossoms were embroidered on silk fabric along with images of birds, butterflies, leaves, and trees. These nature-themed designs are now printed on everything from satin to duck. The coloring of Asian prints is often deep, rich, and sometimes has a mystical energy. Abstract floral designs represent the natural flower in a surreal way. The use of unusual shapes and colors may only allude to true flowers. Botanical florals depict blooms in a realistic manner. Some prints even have words included to name or describe the flowers. Calico is a woven, cotton fabric originally from Calicut, India. The fabric is frequently printed with a small, all-over Page 16 | 50+ Living | May 2019

flower print which has resulted in the name “calico” becoming synonymous with the cotton fabric. Calico actually refers to the cloth, not the design. The flowers frequently printed on the solid color background may have only two colors or a blend of many hues. The design can be bold and bright, or soft and subdued. Calico has many uses including clothing, tote bags, home decor, crafts, and quilts. Ditsy florals. I traveled down a rabbit hole in order to decipher and define this relatively new way to describe tiny, floral prints. The flowers in a ditsy print are small and scattered about. The pattern is pleasing to the eye and appears to be random. Using “ditsy” to describe the floral print probably originated from the same expression used to describe someone who is silly or scatterbrained. Unlike calico, ditsy refers to the design not the fabric. Festive florals are adorned with holiday symbols of poinsettias, berries, and ribbon. The colors are often traditional red, pine green, and gold. Modern colors of lime green, bright pink, and silver are becoming more popular. Liberty florals were developed by Arthur Liberty. His long career in textiles eventually led him to handprint un-dyed fabrics in florals, paisleys, and abstract designs. The “Liberty Prints” with small flowers have muted colors with little or no empty space in between the blooms. The fabric is available in silks and corduroy, with the most popular choice being Tana Lawn cotton. The drapability and silky feel of Tana Lawn makes the fabric ideal for dresses, blouses, and lightweight skirts.

Retro florals refer to the vibrant, bold colors and large motifs popular in the 1960s. While these flowers could be labeled abstract or geometric, the look is so unique to the era, when you see them you can’t help but think, “flower power.” Vintage florals evoke a nostalgic ambiance. Roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas, and peonies portray a comforting and feminine emotion. The colors of this fabric are often muted or faded to indicate the wearing of time. Watercolor florals have the soft, graceful look of a blurred brushstroke. The ethereal effect is often presented in wispy, pastel colors. With so many options, there are as many ways to style floral fashion as there are flowers in a bouquet. Learning to harmonize and play with your color palette will open the window to self expression. You can determine the statement you wish to make and then choose the garments and accessories that reflect your intention. Think outside the flower box. Rather than wearing the safe and common solid color skirt with a flower print blouse, try wearing a gingham sundress with a flower print bolero jacket. A polka-dot scarf tied as a belt around a flower print dress, a pair of windowpane checked pants with a floral cardigan, or a striped button-down shirt tucked into a floral skirt can all brighten your day. If you are feeling especially daring, a pair of floral print leggings with a floral top can be a casual and eclectic ensemble. The trick to making these floral fashion combinations work lies primarily in the proportion, color, and rhythm of your outfit. Proportion means the size of the flowers matter in relation to the other elements of your clothing selection, the colors need to complement each other, and rhythm implies that there is some repetition to pull it all together. When going “full floral,” mixing the size of the prints will look more appealing than wearing the same size flower from top to bottom. Blending delicate florals with bold florals works as long as you adhere to the color and rhythm guidelines. The colors of your outfit don’t have to be the same, but choosing complimentary colors will keep your look smart and stylish. When mixing two floral prints, take care that at least one color is the same in both prints. This satisfies the color and rhythm guidelines. For example, a print with pink, orange, yellow, and green flowers can work with a print of pink, purple, blue, and white flowers because the pink color will pull the prints together—as long as the pink hues have the same

intensity. Another interesting combination is to wear inverted color prints. A floral top with a light lavender background can look chic when paired with floral pants that have a dark lavender background—even if the colors of the flowers are completely different. Imagine a garden filled with a variety of colorful blossoms. Combining florals can give this same vision as long as your ensemble looks intentional and not haphazard. As a seamstress, I like to add a floral collar and cuffs to the plaid shirts I make. Pairing florals with stripes, polka-dots, or checks looks modern because the consistency of the fixed pattern complements the irregularity of the floral print. Choosing complementary colors with attention to proportion and rhythm will keep you from looking like an overgrown garden in need of weeding. While anyone can wear florals, the size of the flower should correlate to the size of your frame. If you are petite, small prints work best so to not overwhelm your features. The softness of a small print is enhanced with flowy rayons, chiffons, and synthetic blends. Large flower motifs work best on swing coats, full skirts, and maxi dresses so the blossoms are not cut apart. Bold floral prints can be energizing and make a strong statement. Heavier fabrics such as wool, denim, and cotton work best with these prints. If a sophisticated look is your goal, be sure there is a little quiet space in your ensemble. This can be achieved with a solid top or bottom. Black and white floral garments can be very elegant. They can be toned down with black flats or spiced up with red heels. For just a touch of flower flair, add a silk bloom to your purse or wide-brimmed hat. I have quite an obsession with my hand-made fabric-flowers and tend to put one on nearly everything I make. If you want to step gently into the flower field, began by adding floral accessories to your look. It’s a pretty safe way to add a pretty accent. The variety of floral fabric prints and accessories make it easy to create many eye-catching looks. This spring, express yourself with flowers and enjoy wearing this classic trend all season long. The Power of Massage By Jane Grimshaw

M

any people consider massage to be the ultimate treat. It is an opportunity to indulge in a session of immense stimulation and satisfaction, which can help to soothe away a troubled day at the office, or help to blank out all your troubles. This is of course true, but there are many other benefits to be gained from massage – particularly when used on a regular basis.

Massage has actually been around for thousands of years and has been used as a healing tool in a variety of different cultures. It is one of the oldest and simplest forms of therapy, which involves stroking, kneading and pressing different areas of the body with varying degrees of pressure - to stimulate, tone, relax and relieve pain. People of all ages and from all walks of life can enjoy the enormous physical and mental benefits of massage. It offers a drug-free alternative, which is based on the body’s natural ability to heal itself, and can assist in the treatment of many disorders such as: Back pain, infertility, sleeping problems, high blood pressure, infertility, eating disorders, stress, depression, diabetes, post-operative surgery, breathing problems and discomfort during pregnancy.

Specialist areas Massage can be performed as full or partial body massage and can work on specific areas to give maximum benefit. Page 18 | 50+ Living | May 2019

Gentle massage works on the nervous system, which releases endorphins. This relaxes the body giving it an overall sense of well-being. It helps to reverse the damaging effects of stress on the body, by slowing down the heart rate, respiration and metabolism and lowering blood pressure. Stronger massage helps to relax muscles and ease tense joints. It stimulate blood circulation, thus improving the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues and improves the lymphatic system. As well as different pressures, there are various types of massage available, specialising in specific areas. Here are a few examples: Relaxation Massage – The smooth, flowing action of this type of massage improves circulation, movement and muscle tension, allowing the body to completely unwind. Sports Massage – Aids in the recovery of sporting accidents and improves performance, by using a variety of massage techniques. Pregnancy Massage – This is also known as prenatal massage and is performed by specially trained therapists to alleviate stress, anxiety, aches and pains during pregnancy. Aromatherapy Massage – This is where massage is combined with essential oils to bring maximum massage benefits.

Reflexology - This involves massage to the reflex areas of the feet to help the body gain complete equilibrium. Baby Massage – Once you know how to perform this, you can carry it out yourself. It can help to relax your baby, thus aiding sleep and helping to enforce the bonding process with your baby. Before any massage is carried out, you should be asked certain questions about your health. This will determine whether or not massage is going to be appropriate for your condition. There are certain conditions which are unsuitable for massage and these include: certain forms of cancer, thrombosis, varicose veins, fractures, swellings, bruises, high temperature, infections, or any contagious diseases. If you are unsure about any symptoms it is best to check it out with your doctor first.

Try this at home You can perform gentle massage at home on your partner. It is a wonderful way to relax and bring pleasure. Make sure you

provide some extra pillows for added comfort and ensure that the room is warm. You can add soft music, scented candles, or low lighting to create the perfect mood. Remember to choose a suitable time when you will not be required to rush off anywhere or are likely to be disturbed by anyone. When it comes to choosing oils there is a variety to choose from. It is probably best to try different ones to find out which suit you the best. You can choose from oils such as: Almond, Apricot, Grape seed, Avocado, Jojoba and Wheat germ. These oils can be applied easily to the skin and will help your hands to glide smoothly across the body. Considering the ever increasing stress in our lives these days, massage is worth considering as a very beneficial treatment to help prevent the onset of illness, as well as alleviating any existing problems. Touching the body brings with it a feeling of care and compassion and provides a deep and lasting sense of relaxation; thus allowing the body to experience complete emotional and spiritual balance. Taking S’mores to the Next Level

I

f you are of the opinion that food tastes better outside and that anything with chocolate is heaven, you are most likely a fan of s’mores. That sticky stack of graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate has been a favorite for generations of campers. While there is nothing like a good old classic, consider these ways to take your s’mores game to the next level.

your second s’more, you are often sticky all over. You can get all of the yumminess with less of the mess by making your s’mores dippable. Simply fill the bottom of an 8-inch pan with chocolate squares, and layer marshmallows over the top. Bake in the oven until the tops of the marshmallows are golden brown. Grab a handful of graham crackers and dip in.

Candy S’mores Give the traditional s’more a delicious twist. Instead of putting a piece of chocolate between the graham crackers, mix it up with your favorite chocolate candy. Peanut butter cups make a delicious, nutty treat. Peppermint patties add a refreshing spin on the s’more. Substitute a Kit Kat for the chocolate to get a crunchy, gooey indulgence.

Orange S’mores Orange and chocolate flavors complement each other well, and you can use this to your advantage when turning your s’more expectations upside down. Cut a fresh orange in half and scoop out the fruit. Put some chocolate squares in the bottom of the hollow rind and top it with marshmallows. Crumble graham crackers on top, and put it over your campfire or in the oven until the marshmallows are as gooey as you like. Grab a spoon and enjoy your orange infused s’more cup.

S’mores Dip S’mores aren’t exactly a neat food. By the time you are on Page 20 | 50+ Living | May 2019

Chocolate Chip S’mores For a truly delicious treat, ditch the graham crackers, and pull out the big guns. Chocolate chip cookies will take your s’mores to an entirely different plane of deliciousness. Make the s’mores as you normally would, except cap the ends with everyone’s favorite cookie. It makes the s’more softer and far more decadent.

Dougnut S’mores If you want s’mores that push the indulgence meter to its limits, try using dougnuts as a substitute for the graham crackers. A pair of glazed donuts stuffed with marshmallows and chocolate is so good it should be illegal.

Deep Fried S’mores If you love s’mores but just think they are too healthy, pull out the deep fryer. A battered and fried s’more is a confection worthy of any carnival or street fair.

S’more Kabobs It seems to have become the fashion among foodies to offer traditional dishes deconstructed. You can get in on this trend by separating the s’more into its basic elements and putting them on a stick. Grab a metal skewer and load it up with chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers. You may have to use different types of chocolate and graham crackers to see what works best on your kabob.

S’more Fondue Since the fondue craze of the mid-20th century, chocolate lovers everywhere have been dipping their marshmallows. You can make your own s’more fondue by melting chocolate on the stove or in the microwave and dipping a fork-speared marshmallow into the sweet liquid. Now that you know how to elevate your s’mores to the next level, wipe the drool off of your mouth, and head to the market to pick up some ingredients. These recipes may all become new favorites. Ee

3 Diseases That May Ultimately Lead to Tooth Loss

A

lthough many people may not realize it, our physical health has a significant connection to our dental health. While untreated periodontal disease is a nobrainer when it comes to a leading cause of tooth loss, physical ailments such as rheumatoid arthritis can negatively affect oral health as well. In fact, here are three diseases your dentist recommends keeping in check in order to improve general health and lower your risk of tooth loss.

Osteoporosis Linked to Tooth Loss in Older Adults Although osteoporosis can affect any bone in your body, it most commonly affects the hips, spines, and wrists of older men and women. However, osteoporosis or “thinning bones” also may lead to bone deterioration and loss of your jawbone, according to the American Academy of Periodontology.

Studies have found a connection between jawbone loss and tooth loss. Specifically, without teeth to stimulate healthy jawbone growth, untreated tooth loss will eventually lead to jawbone decline. Conversely, adults with jawbone loss due to osteoporosis have an increased chance of tooth loss.

Diabetes Increases Risk of Tooth Loss Americans with diabetes (approximately 8 percent) are at greater risk for tooth loss--especially those over age 50, according to research published in the Journal of the American Dental Association. In fact, those with diabetes had an average loss of 10 teeth, compared with fewer than seven for those without the disease. Additionally, according to the ADA, 28 percent of diabetics had lost all their teeth. The reason, according to researchers, is probably high blood sugar. Specifically, high blood sugar can disrupt the delivery of nutrients and removal of debris from gum tissue. This eventually leads to periodontal disease, and over time, to tooth loss.

Tooth Loss May Occur Due to Hypertension Dental experts believe that high blood pressure and tooth loss may go hand in hand. Research from the American College of Cardiology suggests that for every tooth you lose, you increase

your chances of heart disease, including high blood pressure (hypertension). Additionally, the National Institutes of Health notes several studies find a link between periodontal infections and cardiovascular disease, especially stroke. While experts suggest the need for more research, at least two studies report connections between hypertension and periodontal disease, especially tooth loss. Ultimately, there is a strong link between general health and dental health. Take care of your overall health by eating properly, getting plenty of exercise, brushing and flossing daily, and visiting your health care professionals regularly, and you give yourself a better chance of having good physical and dental health. For more information, be sure to speak with your dentist about your medical and dental health. Ee

D

ealing with Depression: Changing Your Inner Monologue

D

epression comes from a lot of different causes. Sometimes it has to do with past traumas. With some people, there’s a genetic component. Whatever the cause, it is usually reinforced by your inner monologue. All of the things you say to yourself, no matter how minor and no matter how instinctive, steer your feelings either toward or away from depressive thoughts and feelings. This means that learning to change your inner monologue is actually a critical tool for dealing with your depression.

Your Inner Monologue and The Subconscious Mind Your subconscious mind is a very simple thing. It will always assume that everything that you say in your head with strong feeling is the truth. It will also assume that everything you say to yourself repeatedly is true, no matter how little feeling there is behind it. It doesn’t think about what you say rationally, because thinking about things rationally is not the way the subconscious works. Because of this, the things you say to yourself frequently become true. Your subconscious acceptance of them causes you Page 24 | 50+ Living | May 2019

to behave as if they were true. Thoughts serve as rehearsals for real beliefs and actions.

Changing Your Inner Monologue Changing your inner monologue can make a real difference when it comes to dealing with depression. It may not cure the central issues that cause depression, but it can habitually steer your mind away from having depressive episodes. However, changing your inner monologue is not easy. After all, your inner monologue is constantly running, and struggling with every single thought you have would leave you with no time to actually live your life. The best approach is to exert control over your thoughts gradually, in stages. Make an effort to change the worst of your internal monologue’s negative statements into more positive ones. For example, when you think something like, “I really messed that up, I’m so stupid,” stop that train of thought and tell yourself, “I really messed that up, true, but everything’s OK. Messing up is just part of learning to do better.” In time, this will become a

habit, and the positive words will replace the negative ones.

Going to the Good Memories Remembering past events brings up the feeling associated with those events. So when you replay memories of being hurt or betrayed, as most people do, you bring back feelings of pain and betrayal. Because the subconscious mind can’t distinguish between things real experiences and vivid recollections, this does nothing but keep old wounds fresh, and this will keep pushing you in the direction of depression. Instead, when you find yourself unable to let go of unpleasant memories, deliberately make yourself think of a happy memory instead. It may be hard to do at first. It will probably be drowned out by the louder, painful memory. Once you have the happy memory in mind, strengthen it. Make the scene of that memory larger. Make its colors more vivid. Really concentrate on it. Make the sounds louder. These changes will make the happy memory seem “louder” than the bad memory. With practice, this diversion of memories will become automatic whenever you are troubled by unpleasant memories.

Promo Code: 50plus

In Conclusion Your subconscious mind can lead you into happiness just as easily as it can lead you into depression. Your internal monologue is the key to choosing how you react to specific situations and memories. Make your inner monologue work for you, not against you. Ee May 2019 | 50+ Living | Page 25

Is Fluffy Unhealthy?

5 Common Cat and Dog Health Issues

Y

our human family members can complain when they feel under the weather, but things get more complex for pets. Our furry friends aren’t just unable to tell us when they’re unwell; many cats and dogs actively hide their symptoms. It’s a coping mechanism that kept their wild ancestors safe during tough times, but it can cause real problems at home. You can help keep tabs on your pets’ health by learning about the most common ailments, their symptoms, and appropriate treatments.

1. Obesity Concerns about obesity may be overblown, but one thing is still true - 25 to 40 percent of our pets are overweight or obese. Those numbers are growing as more animals live sedentary, housebound lives or receive inappropriate foods. While a few extra ounces might not seem like a big deal, they can add up. Overweight and obese pets are more likely to suffer from joint and mobility problems. They might also develop diabetes or conditions such as fatty liver disease. Learn how to check your pet’s body condition to keep him or her healthier.

2. Arthritis This condition frequently affects older dogs and cats, making life difficult and painful. You might not realize that your pet is in pain right away, though. Most animals act normally until the condition becomes severe. It’s also hard to tell arthritis symptoms from other problems. If your dog or cat seems to slow down or avoids climbing stairs, it might be time for a visit to your local vet. Simple exercise or medication could help your pet live a longer, more comfortable life.

3. Dental Problems Many pet owners wouldn’t dream of brushing a dog or cat’s teeth, but they should. Even Fido can suffer from plaque and tartar deposits that can lead to decay or inflammation. In severe cases, dental issues can stop your pet from eating correctly. Dental infections can even be life threatening. Clean your pet’s mouth regularly if he or she can tolerate it, and use a treat or food designed to keep teeth in good condition. Once a year, get the vet to perform a deeper cleaning that will help your furry friend stay in good health.

4. Ear Infections If your dog or cat spends a lot of time shaking its head or seems off-balance, an ear infection could be the culprit. About 20 percent of dogs and 10 percent of cats suffer from ear conditions, most of which can be prevented by regular cleaning. Ask your vet to teach you how to care for your pet’s ears for a happier, healthier family.

5. Parasites Fleas, ticks, worms and other parasites can be a big issue for many pets, especially those with access to the outside. These tiny creatures are responsible for a lot of itching and discomfort. They can also cause anemia, nutritional problems, and even death. The good news is that you can treat your pet for multiple parasites at the same time. Choose a topical product based on ivermectin or a similar systemic anti-parasitic medication. It will help keep away ticks, intestinal worms, and even heartworms. The treatment is simple, and it could save your pet’s life! Ee Page 26 | 50+ Living | May 2019

Five Major Health Benefits of Olive Oil

O

live oil provides a host of health benefits making it a superior alternative to other cooking oils. It is a staple of the Mediterranean diet, a region known for longer than average lifespans and lower rates of many chronic diseases. Thousands of studies have shown that the unique properties of olive oil are partly responsible. Below are some of the most impressive health benefits of this flavorful and nutritious oil.

Better Cardiovascular Health

A Healthier Digestive Tract

Diets incorporating olive oil have been directly linked to lower rates of cardiovascular disease, endothelial damage, and cholesterol. In elderly people, switching from other cooking oils to olive oil has even been shown to improve artery health, including high reduction of stroke risk. Olive oil contains high amounts of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, both of which fight the harmful effects of oxidative stress on the cardiovascular system. Adding as little as 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil a day to the average diet can drastically improve heart health.

The antioxidants and anti-inflammatories found in olive oil benefit the digestive system. Increased olive oil consumption has been linked to lower rates of colon cancer and intestinal cancer. The polyphenols in olive oil also help to maintain a healthy balance in the digestive tract by slowing the growth of harmful bacteria which can cause ulcers and inflammation of the stomach lining.

Page 28 | 50+ Living | May 2019

Stronger Bones

Lower Risk of Depression

There is strong evidence that olive oil can contribute to stronger, less brittle bones, helping to slow the damage caused by osteoporosis. Laboratory testing linked olive oil consumption with increased production of calcium and phosphorous, as well as decreased rates of bone density loss.

Higher rates of depression are linked to diets rich in trans-fats, as opposed to the monounsaturated fats found in olive oil. While olive oil isn’t the only vegetablebased oil to contain this kind of fat, it does contain the highest concentration among all other oils. Studies suggest that olive oil may have a protective effect against the risk of depression, even when physical activity and general mental health is taken into account. In one study, those who consumed olive oil had a 48% lower risk of depression than those who regularly consumed trans-fats.

Improved Brain Function Regular use of olive oil has been shown to correlate with improved short-term visual memory and verbal fluency. Laboratory testing has also suggested a possible link between olive oil consumption and the ability of the brain to balance water content and central nervous system activity. Finally, olive oil may aid in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease by slowing the accumulation of brain plaque and boosting the production of beneficial protein enzymes in the brain. Though testing is not yet definitive on the matter, the fact that the Mediterranean region has one of the lowest rates of Alzheimer’s disease in the world seems to support this conclusion.

There is more than enough evidence to show that incorporating olive oil into a normal diet provides impressive health benefits. People that consume olive oil regularly are at a lower risk for virtually every major chronic disease, and in some cases olive oil can even help to reverse damage that has already been done. Replacing only one or two teaspoons of other cooking oils with olive oil each day is enough to reap the many benefits. Ee
