THE PERFECT MULLED APPLE CIDER Mulled cider is a warm and cozy beverage that is perfect for chilly autumn and winter evenings. The fragrance of spices and citrus fruits blended with crisp apples is a perfect combination that will warm your senses. This ancient recipe has been enjoyed for centuries, and you can enjoy it too with this easy to make recipe. INGREDIENTS: • 8 cups of fresh apple cider • 2 oranges • 2 cinnamon sticks • 6 cloves • 1 whole nutmeg • 4 slices of fresh ginger • 1/2 cup of brown sugar • 1 cup of spiced rum (optional) • Additional cinnamon sticks and orange slices (for garnish) DIRECTIONS: Take a large pot and pour in the fresh apple cider. Cut two oranges in half and squeeze the juice into the pot, and then place the squeezed oranges into the pot. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger to the pot. Stir in the brown sugar to the cider mixture. Simmer the mixture over medium heat for 20-25 minutes. Make sure to stir occasionally. What Is Ptosis
D
roopy eyelids, also known as ptosis, is a condition in which the upper eyelid droops over the eye, causing functional and cosmetic problems. This condition may range from mild to severe, and although it occurs naturally as part of aging, it can also result from underlying medical conditions or injuries. Age-related ptosis is caused by the natural weakening of the levator muscle, which is responsible for lifting the eyelid and allowing the eye to open fully. With age, the muscle loses its elasticity and firmness, resulting in a drooping of the eyelid. Other factors, such as sagging skin, atrophy of the eyelid tissues, loss of fat in the eyelid region, or structural changes in the eye itself, may also contribute to the development of droopy eyelids. Ptosis can also be an inherited condition, caused by genetic abnormalities that affect the development of the levator muscle or the nerves controlling it. In some cases, congenital ptosis may be associated with other medical conditions, such as neurological disorders or muscle diseases. In addition to age and genetics, there are other factors that can lead to ptosis, such as trauma to the eye or its surrounding tissues. This may include injuries to the eyelid, the muscles, or the nerves controlling the eyelid movement. Certain medical conditions, such as stroke, brain tumors, or neurological disorders, may also damage the nerves or muscles involved in eyelid movement, resulting in ptosis. Certain medications and substances may also cause droopy eyelids as a side effect. For example, eye drops used to treat glaucoma or other eye conditions may cause
droopy eyelids by affecting the muscles that control eyelid movement. Other medications, such as muscle relaxants or tranquilizers, may also cause ptosis by affecting the nerves or muscles involved in eyelid movement. Aside from its cosmetic effects, ptosis may also cause functional problems, such as vision obstruction or eye strain. A severely drooping eyelid may cover part of the pupil, leading to partial vision loss or double vision. It may also cause eye fatigue, headaches, or discomfort, as the eye muscles try to compensate for the impaired vision. Treatment for droopy eyelids may vary depending on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. In mild cases, no treatment may be needed, as the condition may not affect vision or cause significant discomfort. However, in more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct the position of the eyelid and improve vision. Surgery for ptosis typically involves tightening the levator muscle or repositioning the eyelid to a higher level. In some cases, additional procedures, such as eyelid lifting or brow lifting, may also be performed to achieve optimal results. Overall, the causes of droopy eyelids are multifactorial, and may involve various genetic, age-related, environmental, or medical factors. Although the condition may be harmless in some cases, it may also cause functional and cosmetic problems, which may require medical attention. If you are experiencing ptosis or other eye problems, it is important to seek medical advice from an optometrist or ophthalmologist, who can diagnose the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment options. riendsgiving is a relatively new tradition that has gained significant popularity in recent years. The idea behind Friendsgiving is to bring together friends and celebrate a Thanksgiving-like feast together. While Thanksgiving is usually celebrated with family, Friendsgiving is an occasion where friends come together to enjoy a meal, share laughter, and create everlasting memories.
centerpiece like a vase of flowers, a cornucopia, or a fruit basket. Make sure you have enough seating for everyone, and consider adding some extra chairs if needed. If you’re short on space, consider hosting the event outdoors, or at a local park.
Planning a festive Friendsgiving can be a daunting task, especially if you are new to hosting events. However, with proper planning and organization, you can pull off a memorable Friendsgiving that your guests will cherish for years to come. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to plan a festive Friendsgiving.
No Friendsgiving celebration is complete without drinks and entertainment. Make sure you have a variety of drinks available, including wine, beer, soda, and water. You can also create a signature cocktail for the event, or have a hot chocolate bar set up for guests to customize their drinks. As for entertainment, consider playing some games, watching a movie, or having a dance party after dinner.
Choose a Date and Invite Your Guests The first step in planning a festive Friendsgiving is to choose a date and invite your guests. You can choose to celebrate Friendsgiving a week or two before Thanksgiving, or even on Thanksgiving Day if you and your friends are not able to be with family. Once you have decided on a date, send out invites to your guests. You can choose to send out invites via email, text message, or create a Facebook event. Remember to include all the important details such as the date, time, location, and what to bring.
Drinks and Entertainment
Create a Thankful Atmosphere The essence of Thanksgiving is being thankful for what we have in our lives. To create a thankful atmosphere, consider having a gratitude jar where guests can write down what they are thankful for and drop it in the jar. At dinner, take turns reading what guests wrote down, or go around the table and ask each guest to share what they are grateful for. This will add a meaningful touch to your Friendsgiving celebration and create a positive atmosphere.
Plan Your Menu
Don’t Forget Dessert
Food is an essential part of any Friendsgiving celebration. Start planning your menu at least a week before the event. Ask your guests to bring a dish to share, or you can take on the responsibility of preparing the entire meal. Plan your menu based on what your guests like to eat, and create a balanced meal with appetizers, main courses, sides, and desserts. Don’t forget to include vegetarian and nonvegetarian options, and consider any dietary restrictions your guests may have.
No Friendsgiving celebration is complete without dessert. Ask your guests to bring their favorite dessert to share, or you can prepare a classic Thanksgiving dessert like pumpkin pie, pecan pie, or apple crisp. Dessert is a great way to end the meal on a sweet note and bring everyone together.
Prepare Your Home If you plan on hosting Friendsgiving at your home, make sure it’s clean and decorated for the occasion. Set up a festive table with a tablecloth, placemats, and napkins. You can also use a
Planning a festive Friendsgiving can seem like a daunting task, but with proper planning and organization, it can be an unforgettable experience. From choosing a date and inviting your guests to creating a thankful atmosphere and serving dessert, these tips will help you plan a successful Friendsgiving celebration. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun, make memories, and enjoy the time spent with your friends. Happy Friendsgiving! November 2023 | 50+ Living

What Are Your Assets by Laurie Richardone
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of assets? What might come to mind first, is money, property, or a 401k, and so on. Let’s expand our understanding of what assets are? An asset is something that you have that is positive! An asset is something that you have that is positive! Now that we have given a broader definition to assets, why is it imperative to identify them? Knowing our personal assets can show us our values and how unique we truly are, because we don’t always remember those qualities, those intangible assets. The ones we can’t touch, feel, and put our hands on. So, I started to compose a list of my assets. What I discovered was that I was not using many of them to their fullest. To give you a few examples of intangible assets, I have listed some of mine: • Nutrition • An Open Mind • Curiosity • Choice We might not think of choice as an asset, because we perhaps live in a culture that takes that for granted. Not all cultures have this freedom. Let’s unfold that for a moment. To keep the analogy simple, in any situation, we choose love or fear. Are we responding in a free way? Are we acting mindfully? Are we tied to outdated beliefs? Oftentimes it is someone else’s beliefs that we haven’t questioned. Is there fear around a choice we might think is our own? I would like to connect a quote that is related to choice, “ Between stimulus and response lies a space. In that space lies our freedom and power to choose a response. In our response lies our growth and our happiness” - Viktor Frankl I invite you to make a list of your assets. What are some of the qualities you possess that can increase the quality of your life that make you unique? Circle the ones that are actively happening in your life, and highlight the assets you have that perhaps you are not leveraging . We all have many gifts and talents that we oftentimes don’t recognize in ourselves. So make that list, and celebrate your uniqueness, because your assets do make a difference in the world. Green Chili Cornbread This savory cornbread has a touch of sweetness, and is a cozy way to welcome in autumn. Serves 12 INGREDIENTS 1 cup organic cornmeal 1 cup gluten free flour (Cup4Cup, or see cook notes) 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. sea salt 1 cup cashew milk, or other milk 2 eggs 1/2 cup of grass fed butter, melted 1 tsp. honey, melted, to finish cornbread 1/2 tsp. red chili powder, for dusting 1 cup fresh corn kernels, or frozen, organic 1 cup mild hatch green chili, canned, small chop (optional) 1/2 cup cheddar cheese (optional) Preheat the oven to 375. METHOD Mix all dry ingredients in a mixing bowl with paddle attachment. Add milk and eggs. Blend well. Add melted butter. Blend well. With the mixer turned off, fold in the corn kernels, green chili, and cheddar cheese if using. Pour the batter into a greased medium to large cast iron pan. Use either a neutral oil, or melted butter. Spread batter evenly in the pan. Dust with red chili powder. It gives the cornbread a rich color.
Cut the rounded corners off, and set aside for snacking. Cut into even squares. Keep refrigerated for up to four days. The flavors are elevated when slightly cooled. Freezes well for up to two months. Cook Notes: For a lower carb cornbread, replace the gluten free flour with almond flour. If not using Cup4Cup, add 1 tsp. Xanthan gum to the dry ingredients.
Bake for 20 minutes, or until the cake tester comes out clean. When the cornbread is still warm, brush with melted honey for a nice glaze and sweetness.

Top Ten THANKSGIVING Dishes
hanksgiving is a time of year when families and friends gather together to celebrate the blessings of the past year. It is a traditional holiday that has been around for centuries, and it is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the United States. One of the key elements of Thanksgiving is the food. So let’s take a look at the ten most popular Thanksgiving dishes. TURKEY Turkey is undoubtedly the star of the Thanksgiving table. The tradition of serving turkey on Thanksgiving dates back to the early 1600s when the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians celebrated their first harvest together. Today, turkey remains the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving meal, and millions of turkeys are consumed each year during the holiday. Turkey is a relatively lean meat that is often roasted or smoked, and it is served with gravy, stuffing, or cranberry sauce. STUFFING Stuffing, also known as dressing, is an essential part of the Thanksgiving meal. It is usually made with bread cubes, onions, celery, and herbs such as sage, thyme, and rosemary. Mashed potatoes are creamy, smooth, and delicious, and they are often served with gravy. It is the perfect accompaniment to mashed potatoes, stuffing, and turkey. Gravy can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until it is needed. CRANBERRY SAUCE Cranberry sauce is a sweet and tangy condiment that is made from fresh cranberries, sugar, and water. It is a traditional Thanksgiving dish that is often served with

GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE Green bean casserole is a popular Thanksgiving side dish that is made with green beans, mushroom soup, and crispy fried onions. It is a classic comfort food that is creamy, savory, and satisfying. SWEET POTATOES Sweet potatoes, also known as yams, are a delicious and nutritious Thanksgiving side dish. They are often baked or mashed and topped with butter, brown sugar, and marshmallows. Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamins and fiber, making them a great addition to any Thanksgiving meal. PUMPKIN PIE No Thanksgiving meal is complete without a slice of pumpkin pie. It is a classic dessert that is made with pumpkin puree, sugar, eggs, and spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Pumpkin pie is often served with whipped cream, adding a light and fluffy texture to the dish.
CORNBREAD Cornbread is a staple side dish that is often served during the Thanksgiving meal. It is made from cornmeal, flour, eggs, milk, and sugar. Cornbread can be baked in a cast-iron skillet, and it is often served with butter or honey. APPLE PIE Apple pie is a delicious dessert that is often served during the Thanksgiving meal. It is made with fresh apples, sugar, cinnamon, and a flaky pie crust. Apple pie is often served with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, adding a creamy sweetness to the dish. Thanksgiving is a special holiday that is celebrated by millions of people around the world. It is a time for families and friends to come together, give thanks, and enjoy a delicious meal. The ten most popular Thanksgiving dishes are turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, cornbread, and apple pie. Each dish is unique and delicious, and they all contribute to the overall feeling of comfort and warmth that is associated with Thanksgiving.

In September I debuted at one of our newest breweries; a cool spot called The River Arts District Brewing Co. The guys I was playing with that night and I noticed that as it got closer to downbeat, very few of our fans or their regular patrons were present on this beautiful late summer evening. As we ended the first song and our small but mighty crowd applauded, the bassist told us that Live Music Asheville listed 99 different local music happenings on that very evening alone.

Get a Flu Shot Getting a flu shot is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect yourself from the flu. The flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your family from getting the flu. It not only reduces the risk of getting sick, but also reduces the severity of symptoms and the risk of complications. If you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, it’s not too late to do so - as it’s recommended that everyone get it as soon as possible. Stay Active and Exercise Exercise is not only good for your overall health, but it can also boost your immune system and help to prevent illness. Regular exercise strengthens the immune system by increasing the number of white blood cells that fight infections and reduce inflammation. Try to engage in moderate-intensity exercise at least thirty minutes a day, five times a week. This can include activities such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming. Get Enough Sleep
Pssst.
It’s Cold and Flu Season. PASS IT ON.
A
s the temperature starts to drop and the days become shorter, our immune system begins to weaken, making us more susceptible to colds and flu. The winter months can be tough on our health, and so it’s important to take steps in order to protect ourselves and remain healthy during this time. Here are some useful tips for staying healthy during cold and flu season. Practice Good Hygiene The importance of good personal hygiene cannot be overstated when it comes to staying healthy during the cold and flu season. One of the most effective ways of preventing the spread of infection is to wash your hands regularly and properly. Make sure to wash your hands with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, after using the bathroom, coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. Avoid touching your face, mouth, or eyes as much as possible, especially if you haven’t recently washed your hands. Clean and disinfect common surface areas regularly, such as doorknobs, light switches, and kitchen counters, because these are often places where germs like to linger.

Sleep is crucial for maintaining good health and fighting off infections, as it helps the body repair and rebuild itself. Lack of sleep can impair your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off illness. Adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night to maintain overall health and wellbeing. Establishing a regular sleep routine can help you to get enough rest, even in the midst of the cold and flu season. Manage Stress Too much stress can weaken the immune system, making it more difficult for the body to fight off infections. Many activities, such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing, can help to keep stress levels under control. Finding ways to relax and unwind can have a positive effect on your overall health and well-being. Boost Your Immune System In addition to regular exercise and good nutrition, there are many other ways to boost your immune system. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits, has been shown to help prevent and reduce the duration of colds. Echinacea, an herb commonly used in supplements, may also help to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms. Zinc, found in foods like almonds and red meat, is also essential for a healthy immune system. Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of fluids is essential for maintaining good health and fighting infections. Drinking enough water helps
to flush out toxins and keeps the body hydrated. In addition to water, soups, broths, and herbal teas can also help to keep you hydrated and provide important nutrients that can help to boost your immune system. Avoid sugary drinks, as well as too much caffeine and alcohol, as these can dehydrate your body and weaken your immune system. Eat a Healthy Diet A nutritious diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is essential for good health and a strong immune system. Foods such as yogurt, garlic, and ginger, also have immune-boosting properties that can help to strengthen your immune system and protect against infection. Try to consume foods that are high in immune-boosting nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, and E, and zinc. Taking these steps can go a long way towards helping you stay healthy during cold and flu season. With good personal hygiene, regular exercise, enough sleep, stress management, a healthy diet, and other immune-boosting strategies, you will be better equipped to ward off illness and stay healthy through the winter months. By adopting these practices, you will not only protect yourself, but also those around you, and contribute to creating a healthier society.

Make Your
SHOWER Feel Like a
SPA
W
hen you feel like pampering yourself, going to a spa is an excellent way to feel refreshed and rejuvenated. However, a spa day is not always feasible or affordable. What if you could turn your bathroom into a luxurious spa? You can make your daily shower feel like a spa experience by incorporating some simple techniques and additions. Here are some tips on how to make your shower feel like a spa.
A rainfall showerhead should have enough coverage to envelop you with water, and it should be adjustable. If you want to take the luxury up a notch, consider a showerhead with a massage feature. It will help release the tension from your muscles, making your shower experience even more relaxing.
Create an Atmosphere
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to enhance physical and emotional wellbeing. It is a great way to relax and refresh your mind and body. There are many ways to incorporate aromatherapy into your shower experience. You can add essential oils to your shampoo, body wash, or shaving cream. Or, you could add a few drops of essential oils to your shower water, and let the aroma fill your shower stall. Some of the best essential oils for a spa-like shower are lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, and jasmine.
The key to transforming your shower into a spa-like experience is to create the right atmosphere. Start by clearing out the clutter from your bathroom to create a sense of calm. Then, add some luxurious elements to your bathroom. Invest in soft, fluffy towels and robes, soft lighting, and some aromatherapy candles. For an added touch of luxury, you can add a plush bath mat, a wooden tray to hold your spa products, and a waterproof speaker for music. Choose the Right Shower Head Your showerhead is the cornerstone of your shower experience. So, make sure to choose a showerhead that can transform your shower into a rainfall-like experience. 18

Add Aromatherapy
Exfoliate Exfoliating is a great way to get rid of dead skin cells, unclog pores, and rejuvenate your skin. It also helps promote circulation and lymphatic drainage, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth. Incorporating a body scrub into your
shower routine will give you that spa feeling, and you will notice the difference in your skin. There are many body scrubs available on the market, or you can make your own using natural ingredients like sugar, salt, honey, and various oils. Incorporate Hydrotherapy Hydrotherapy is the use of water to promote healing and wellbeing. Incorporating hydrotherapy into your shower experience will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed. One way to do this is to create a contrast shower. A contrast shower involves alternating between hot and cold water, which helps increase circulation, reduces inflammation, and promotes lymphatic drainage. Start by using hot water for one minute, then switch to cold water for 30 seconds. Repeat this process for a few cycles, ending with cold water. Alternatively, you could treat yourself to a foot spa or install a steam shower for that added luxury. Use Soft, Luxurious Products Choosing the right products is essential to create a spa-like shower experience. You want products that will leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and pampered. Invest in some
high-quality products like a moisturizing body wash, a nourishing shampoo, and a hydrating conditioner. It is also essential to check the ingredients and avoid harsh chemicals like parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. Create a Shower Playlist Music has been proven to alleviate stress and elevate mood. Creating a playlist of calming, relaxing, and uplifting music will enhance your shower experience. You can create your playlist or choose from one of the several online services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Make sure to have a waterproof speaker to listen to your favorite tunes while you shower. Creating a spa-like shower experience is easier than you might think. All you need are some simple additions and techniques to transform your daily shower into a luxurious and relaxing experience. Remember to create the right atmosphere, choose the right shower head, incorporate aromatherapy, exfoliate, take advantage of hydrotherapy, use luxurious products, and create a spa playlist. With these tips, you can indulge in a spa-like shower experience from the comfort of your own home.

FALL YARD CLEAN-UP
A
s the days get shorter and the temperatures begin to drop, it’s time to start thinking about fall yard cleanup. The changing of seasons can be an exciting time full of warm sweaters, pumpkin spice, and cozy bonfires, but it also means an abundance of leaves, debris, and dying plants that need to be tended to. Not to worry, however, as with a little bit of elbow grease and some essential tasks for fall yard cleanup, you’ll have your yard looking pristine in no time. Rake It Up One of the most essential tasks for fall yard cleanup is raking. While it may seem like a tedious chore, raking your yard can help to keep it healthy and looking its best. Leaves left to decompose on your lawn can suffocate the grass underneath and create a breeding ground for pests and disease. A good rule of thumb is to rake your yard as soon as the majority of leaves have fallen. Make sure to gather up all the debris, including any twigs or sticks, and either compost or dispose of it. Trim the Hedges Fall is the perfect time to give your hedges and bushes a little TLC. Grab your clippers and trim off any dead or diseased

branches, making sure to cut them back to the trunk or a healthy branch. This will not only keep your landscaping looking neat and tidy, but it will also ensure that your plants will continue to grow and thrive. Tend to Your Lawn Fall is a great time to give your lawn some much-needed attention. Start by aerating your lawn, which allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots. This can be done with a rented machine or a simple garden fork. After aerating, fertilize your lawn with a slow-release fertilizer that will provide nutrients throughout the winter months. Finally, water your lawn deeply to help it prepare for the colder weather ahead. Clean Up Your Garden Beds As your garden begins to wind down, don’t forget to give your beds a little cleanup. Remove any dead or dying annuals, and trim back any perennials that need it. Cut back any spent growth on your plants, and make sure to remove any debris or dead leaves that have accumulated around the base of your plants. This will help to prevent disease and pest problems from overwintering in your garden bed.
Prepare Your Tools for Winter
Prune Your Trees
Before you put your garden tools away for the winter, give them a little TLC. Clean them off with a wire brush or steel wool, and then dry them thoroughly. Apply a light coat of oil or WD-40 to prevent rust, and store them in a dry place. This will make sure that your tools are in good condition and ready to use when spring rolls around.
Fall is a great time to prune your trees, as they are entering their dormant period. This will help to keep your trees healthy and looking great throughout the year. Prune any dead or diseased branches, and trim back any branches that are hanging too close to your house or other structures. Make sure to use clean, sharp tools that won’t damage your trees.
Cover Your Pools and Fountains If you have an outdoor pool or fountain, it’s important to cover it up for the winter. This will help to prevent any damage caused by freezing temperatures or harsh weather conditions. Make sure to drain any water from your pool or fountain, and cover it with a high-quality cover to keep out debris and animals. Clean Gutters Cleaning your gutters may not be the most glamorous task, but it’s an essential part of fall yard cleanup. Clogged gutters can cause water damage to your home’s foundation, so it’s important to clear out any debris before the winter months. Grab a ladder and a pair of gloves, and get to work scooping out any leaves, twigs, or other debris.
Store Summer Equipment Finally, don’t forget to store any summer equipment that you won’t be using during the fall and winter months. This could include your lawnmower, leaf blower, or any other outdoor power tools. Make sure to clean them thoroughly before storing them, and be sure to drain any gasoline or other fluids. Fall yard cleanup may seem like a daunting task, but with a little bit of planning and some essential tasks, you can have your yard looking great in no time. By taking care of your lawn, garden, and outdoor equipment, you’ll be able to enjoy your outdoor space even as the temperature drops. So grab your rake, clippers, and pruning shears and get to work – your yard will thank you!
