Te growing popularity of yoga is also due to the increasing number of scientifc studies that support its benefts. Recent studies have shown that yoga can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease, improve balance and fexibility in older adults, and even help relieve symptoms of chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis and fbromyalgia. Te evidence supporting the benefts of yoga continues to grow, which helps to legitimize the practice in the eyes of those who might have previously been skeptical.

Furthermore, the accessibility of yoga has made it more popular than ever. Tis has made yoga more convenient and afordable for those who might not have access to a local studio, making the practice more widely accessible.

Yoga has become incredibly popular over the past few years due to its versatility, mental and emotional benefts, scientifc support, and accessibility. Te practice of yoga is not just a physical exercise but a path to overall well-being. As people become more aware of the benefts of yoga, it is likely that its popularity will continue to grow. So, if you are looking for a way to improve your physical and mental health, consider giving yoga a try!

Baking an apple galette is one of the most satisfying cooking experiences that anyone can have in their kitchen. It is a dessert that is not only easy to make, but also incredibly versatile. Te dish can be served as a breakfast treat, a dessert, or even a snack. While galettes can be made with a variety of fruits, this recipe specifcally focuses on baking an apple galette.

To start, you will need to prepare the various components of the dish. First, you need to make the pastry dough. You can either make your own pastry dough from scratch or use a store-bought one. However, if you choose to go the homemade route, it will take a little more time and efort, but it is defnitely worth it.

To make the pastry dough, you will need four, sugar, salt, unsalted butter, and water. Begin by whisking the dry ingredients together in a bowl. Ten, cut the butter into small cubes and add it to the bowl. Using your hands, work the butter into the four mixture until it resembles coarse sand. Once this is done, add enough ice-cold water to bring the dough together. Work the dough until it forms a ball. Ten, wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least an hour.

Next, prepare the apple flling. You will need peeled and thinly sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and lemon juice. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, salt, and lemon juice. Mix everything together until the apples are coated in the sugar and spices. Once this is done, set the flling aside for a while.

Now it’s time to put everything together. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Take your pastry dough out of the refrigerator and roll it out on a foured surface until it is about a quarter inch thick. Place the dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern in the center of the dough, leaving about an inch of space around the edges.

Fold the edges of the dough over the flling, creating pleats as you go. Te center of the apple galette should remain exposed. Brush the edges of the dough with an egg wash and sprinkle some granulated sugar over it. Tis will give

the galette a nice golden color and add a little crunch to the crust. Ten, put the galette in the oven and bake it for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

Once the galette is done, take it out of the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes. Ten, slice it and serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Te combination of warm, faky crust and tender, cinnamon-spiced apples is pure heaven.

Baking an apple galette is a simple yet impressive dessert that is perfect for any occasion. With a little bit of preparation and patience, you can create a delicious treat that will impress your friends and family. Whether you serve it for breakfast, dessert, or as a snack, an apple galette is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. So, try making one today, and you’ll see why it’s one of the most satisfying desserts you’ll ever bake!

Warning Signs of PROSTATE CANCER

The prostate gland is an essential part of the male reproductive system. It is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Te gland resembles the shape and size of a walnut, and its primary function is to produce semen, the fuid that carries sperm. As men age, the prostate gland can grow larger and cause problems that can require medical attention. It is essential to stay aware of the warning signs of prostate problems to catch any issues early and seek treatment.

Te most common problem that men experience with their prostate is benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, which afects nearly all men as they age. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, which can put pressure on the urethra, causing problems with urination. Men with BPH may experience frequent urination, weak urine fow, trouble starting and stopping urination, the feeling of incomplete voiding, and the need to go frequently at night.

Another condition that can be a warning sign of prostate problems is prostatitis, which is an infammation of the prostate gland. Men with prostatitis may experience pain and discomfort, frequent urination, difculty urinating, and fever and chills. In some cases, prostatitis can lead to chronic pelvic pain or erectile dysfunction.

Prostate cancer is the most serious and potentially lifethreatening problem that a man can experience with their prostate. It is the second most common cancer in men and accounts for about 10% of all cancer diagnoses in men. Te American Cancer Society estimates that in 2021, about 248,530 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States.

Te warning signs of prostate cancer can be similar to those of BPH and prostatitis, but they can also include blood in semen or urine, erectile dysfunction, a lump in the prostate, and bone pain. It is essential to note that not all men with prostate cancer experience symptoms. Prostate cancer is ofen detected through routine prostate-specifc antigen (PSA) screenings or digital rectal exams (DRE).

It is important to note that not all prostate problems require treatment. For example, many cases of BPH can be managed through lifestyle changes, such as limiting cafeine and alcohol consumption and avoiding drinking fuids before bedtime. Medications can also be used to reduce symptoms associated with BPH.

However, when medical attention is required, doctors may recommend treatments such as medication, surgery, or radiation therapy. In some cases, a combination of treatments may be recommended.

To reduce your risk of developing prostate problems, it is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Tis includes eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. It is also essential to have regular check-ups with your doctor to monitor the health of your prostate gland.

Te warning signs of prostate problems can vary depending on the condition. Men who experience symptoms associated with their prostate should seek medical attention promptly. With early detection, many prostate problems can be successfully managed or cured. It is essential to stay informed about the health of your prostate and take steps to reduce your risk of developing prostate problems. By doing so, you can improve your quality of life and reduce the likelihood of experiencing serious complications.

Local Music Makers

I’ve had a busy summer. I’m grateful to my husband and I’m thankful for my full calendar of performances. I’m uplifed by my family and friends and I’m inspired by my students. My day in and day out routine up until recently, has been the usual mix of joys and challenges.

I didn’t expect, however, to have to face the sudden death of one of my dearest pals; a truly one-of-a-kind human. I ofen referred to him as my champion.

He was the regular drummer in my Blues band for six years and even when we stopped playing together every week, he flled in when he could for many years afer. He produced, mixed and mastered and played drums on my only live recorded CD release, “Peggy Ratusz Sings the Blues.” He even designed the cover.

Te late night talks on the phone, even though they became fewer and farther between over recent years, were calls I never ignored and they ran the gamut of deep to silly, raunchy to revitalizing. He called me “P-Marie.” I called him “my Joey.”

Te shock of losing him in the way that we did, just shy of his 49th birthday, causes me crying jags that are triggered by random as well as signifcant things. Like, I desperately went looking for and found in the very back of my closet, something he gave me. It belonged to his late mother. I shouted out his name and fell on the bed when I found it.

His name was Joey. And among a million other things, he was most notably a son, Kathy’s love, a brother to his band mates, a mentor, a friend. A multi-instrumentalist (mainly

REMEMBER

drums and guitar), he was a prolifc songwriter with a penetrative voice.

I don’t think I’m very much unlike his even closer friends and family, when I catch myself fxating and obsessing over the reasons why he chose to leave us.

As a result, I spent time studying the lyrics to over 20 of his songs looking for insight.

Joey was a professional musician since the age of 16. ‘Sad Clown’ was his frst solo album in 2008. Before moving to Asheville he had his own band, Big Pill and remarkably, he was the out-front lead singer/drummer. Tey played nonstop in the Los Angeles area for eight years.

In 2011 Joey wrote and released ‘Fifeen Year Overnight Success’ here in Asheville. Ten in 2019, he recorded ‘Ten Years a Broken Stage.’ Tese two albums abound in rhymes and reasons, questions and answers. Poignant and heartfelt, irked, raw and angry, hopeless, searching, romantic, funny and refective, Joey did not shy away from irreverence either.

“15 Years” is a bombastic rock fusion instrumental that starts with a sampling of randomly layered voices from a collection of voice mail messages, where we hear a myriad of moods and infections in the voices of his tribe. What follows, sounds like a mufed heartbeat. Ten it’s free-style Joey slapping and whacking the skins with intense fervor. We’re bombarded with the take-no-prisoners heavy rock fusion beat with steelpan and distorted guitar afer that.

“Friendly Reminder” reveals some of Joey’s best advice when he sings, “Te past ain’t your fault. Take all your secrets and lock em’ up in the vault. Ask me what you want, you know I’ve done it all but the bigger the pride, the harder the fall. Do what I sing and not what I do. Listen up close if you know what’s good for you.”

“All I Got” is one of the frst songs I ever heard him do live. It’s got an earworm of a hook line. “Peace of mind is all I want but I don’t place bets cause all I got lef is cofee and cigarettes. Twelve leaps of faith and one day at a time to rid me of the faults I held so dear. Sober I’ll stay but I don’t place bets and all I got lef is cofee and cigarettes.”

“Small” is a deep and deliberate slower paced rock ballad that asks: “Can’t you hear me calling? Don’t you know I’m falling in my sleep? Can’t you hear me crying? Don’t you know I’m dying in my dreams? Look at all that we have here. Places, people live in fear. Selfsh me, how could I be so small? Oh my body’s aching. Oh my back is breaking. No

one knows. Don’t you know I’m famished? Can’t you see I’ve vanished from my clothes?”

“Full Time Loser” has an elastic happy funky beat and with his signature poppy clear timber, he saunters through the verses like a crooner, but his ballsy 3-word hook line doubles as the chorus and hits you like a brick.

“All the Time”– a ballad that moved me to tears when I sat down just now to really be present with it: “I had my way. I can’t live this way. Gonna clean out my top drawer and I won’t do that stuf no more. Gonna grow up to have the thrill of paying all my bills all the time. Like a vaudeville act the plates would spin. Te nightlife and good times, suckers us in. I’m on this stage and I sing my song loud. Now I’ve seen I’ve been a bit too proud. Now that I’ve turned X-X-X years old, I fnd now I have less of a hold on that light that shines deep within.”

His 2019 release, ‘Ten Years a Broken Stage’ explores Latin beats and instruments, as well as more of the heavy hitting Rock-Jazz fusion elements that ‘Fifeen Years’ delivers. Tere are apologies and love songs, questions and observations. He took the power of his full voice to higher places on a couple tracks on this 8 song release.

“Yes I Am” is in 12/8 time and it’s a potent and lush apology ballad.

“Everything” is a sweet Latin love song with repetitive lines: “I owe you everything; your love is everything…”

Joey, your whole life was everything. I hope your soul is bigger and brighter and more at ease; because you took a piece of all ours with you when you lef.

“I cry for you, and the sky cries for you. And when you went I became a hopeless drifer. But this life was not for you, though I learned from you, that beauty need only be a whisper.” Katie Melua

I encourage you to view this video of Joey in rare form. It’s his NPR tiny desk contest submission from six months ago that includes all his bloopers. It’s a song about his perfect woman called “Fat Side of Skinny.”

Your healthcare provider can perform a physical exam and may order further tests, such as blood tests, a biopsy, or imaging tests, to determine the cause of your symptoms.

It is important to note that most thyroid nodules are not cancerous, and many people with thyroid cancer have no symptoms at all. However, early detection of thyroid cancer can greatly improve the chances of successful treatment. Redefne How We Feel About Aging

Tere’s an opportunity on the horizon for reinventing the perception of what it means to age.

Te words we use have power. Let’s take the word OLD out of our vocabulary and turn aging into “living longer” which we are. Te later years of our life are to be the years of treasures. Tey are called the golden years for a reason. We have wisdom, perspective and experience. Tese are pivotal tools needed in living productive fruitful years. Te great news is, they only come with age.

It can be a glorious time to live our lives according to our own passions, values, and interests.

In order to do so, we have to take command of the wheel and apply our own meaning to aging. Yes, the years add up, but do we have to get old? I think not. One of the many ways to age gracefully is to continue to learn about the body mind connection. Meaning, to give attention to what we think, say, eat, and believe, as this contributes to either dis-ease or vibrant health.

Simple changes that can transform the process of aging.

• Make attitude adjustments, give attention to your thoughts.

• Mental stimulation, learn a new word every day, stay curious.

• Add healthy fats to your diet , like avocados, walnuts, and pure olive oil.

• Keep moving your body, keep the energy fowing.

Studies show, people who see themselves as old, regardless of their chronological age, may feel less efective than those who perceive themselves to be young or even middle-aged, “My eighty-seven year young mother is a great example of living life on her terms, and to its fullest”.

Te question is? What do you want to do with these years flled with wisdom? How do you want to feel? How do you want to spend your time? Tese are questions I repeatedly ask myself. I encourage you to take some time in refection every day and visualize the life you want to live. It is waiting for you.

I love this quote by the iconic performer David Bowie:

“Aging is the extraordinary process where we become who we always should have been”.

I believe the pathway to graceful aging starts with writing our own narrative. In addition to, keeping our mind and imagination open wide. It takes courage to live our life on our own terms. Be brave. Tis alters not only how older people view themselves, but how younger people view their elders. Both perspectives can help change outdated views of what it means to age. If we are lucky, the years will add up, and we will get older, but we never, ever, have to get old.

Wishing you a fruitful journey ~Laurie

How to Prepare a FALL Garden

Fall is a magical season that ofers a unique opportunity for every aspiring gardener to prepare and enjoy a bountiful harvest. Tere is an incredible array of seasonal vegetables, fruits, and herbs that do exceptionally well during the fall, and all that one needs is proper preparation and planning to witness a glorious bloom.

To create a fall garden planner, there are various aspects one could consider to ensure that everything is in order. From assessing the soil quality and nutrients to choosing the optimal location and selecting the right plants, every decision plays a crucial role in the success of the garden. Tis article will delve deeper into the steps involved in preparing a fall garden that will yield the best possible results.

Assessing the Soil Quality

Te secret to cultivating an excellent garden lies in the quality of the soil. Before deciding on the plants to be grown, it is essential to assess the soil quality, nutrient levels, and pH levels. Soil with a pH level of between 6.0 and 7.5 is ideal for growing plants. A pH level of 6.5 is perfect for most garden vegetables. Terefore, testing the soil can be useful when deciding which plants to grow.

One can fnd soil testing kits in local garden centers, or one can send samples to a laboratory for testing. Te soil testing report will ofer an insight into the soil’s composition and nutrient levels and thus help decide on the soil’s treatment.

Adding Nutrients to the Soil

Once the soil testing results come in, one must add the necessary nutrients to the soil. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus are the three essential nutrients that plants need to grow, and a lack of these nutrients can limit plant growth and yield.

A healthy way to add nutrients to soil is through composting or using organic fertilizers. Compost is excellent for soil conditioning, improves fertility, and makes it easier to work with the soil. Adding organic materials like leaves, manure, or grass clippings, can also help improve the soil’s structure and add the necessary nutrients to ensure the plants grow adequately.

Selecting the Right Plants

Selecting the right plants is crucial to make sure the garden

grows and thrives. Te fall is a perfect time for planting certain vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Some of the most popular fall plants include kale, spinach, radishes, beets, carrots, turnips, and broccoli. Tese plants thrive in the cooler temperatures of fall and do not require direct sunlight for an extended period, making them perfect for planting in the fall.

It is important to note that even though some plants may look appealing, it may not be the best ft for the garden. It’s essential to match the right plant with the right soil and ensure the plot receives adequate light. Terefore, researching which plants are better suited for one’s garden can lead to a successful fall season.

Choosing the Optimal Location

Choosing the proper location for the fall garden is crucial. To ensure the growth of healthy plants, the area must be clear of any obstructions and provide ample sunlight for the plants.

Te ideal location for the garden is in the part of the yard that receives the most amount of sunlight, as this leads to better plant growth. Te area should be well-drained and free from any surface water accumulation. Poor drainage can lead to waterlogging, which can cause damage to roots and limit the plants’ growth.

Irrigation System

Keeping plants hydrated is a signifcant pillar in ensuring that one has a successful fall garden. Terefore, installing an irrigation system is necessary to ensure that the plants receive an adequate amount of water.

A drip irrigation system is perfect for a fall garden as it delivers water directly to the plants’ roots, reducing water loss through evaporation. It also ensures that the water is evenly distributed throughout the garden. A drip irrigation system provides the perfect amount of water to the plants while reducing runof and thus over-watering.

Pest Control Measures

Pest control should be a top priority when planning a fall garden. Pests can be a signifcant threat to the success of a fall garden and can cause signifcant damage to plants. Sheer numbers and diferent kinds of bugs can lead to leaf damage, stem damage, and root damage, resulting in stunted growth, weak plants, and a lousy harvest.

Tere are numerous steps one can take to minimize the risk of pests. Planting pest-resistant varieties would be an excellent place to begin; for example, marigolds can deter beetles and Japanese beetles. Covering plants with row covers to protect them from pests is another option, or applying natural pest repellents containing ingredients like neem oil and garlic.

A fall garden is an excellent opportunity to cultivate a bountiful harvest of fresh produce. Tis article has provided guidance on preparing and planting a fall garden from assessing the soil quality to selecting the right plants and installing an irrigation system.
