Name this dog I have the honor of being the national dog of Turkey; which of course, gets me on the Turkish postage stamp (it’s a sticky job). I also have a ‘stinky’ job of guarding livestock, including; pigs, cows, and sheep. I have a black mask and a solid body color ranging from dun to dark gray. And, I typically have white feet (hard to keep clean). I am big and strong, am affectionate with children and am very obedient. I am only found in the eastern region of Turkey, so scheduling a visit is tough.

Sign up now for pet first aid & CPR class The American Red Cross of WNC and Animal Compassion Network (ACN), are partnering to offer the community a pet first aid and CPR class on Saturday, September 17. The class will take place from 10 am to 2 pm at The American Red Cross, 100 Edgewood Road in Asheville. The American Animal Hospital Association, (AAHA) states that one outof four pets would survive an accident or illness if pet guardians are familiar with and capable of providing first aid when necessary. “Just as with humans, performing first aid to an injured pet, prior to getting veterinary assistance, can be the difference between life and death,” said Eileen Bouressa, ACN executive director, and Mary Barnett, Health & Safety Services Director at the American Red Cross of WNC, in a joint statement. The Pet First Aid and CPR Class will teach pet guardians: how to recog-
nize an emergency; how to perform CPR; how to respond to choking incidents, how to stock and use a pet first aid kit; demonstration on muzzling and restraining an injured animal; responding and preparing for emergencies. Dr. Randy Wetzel, director of R.E.A.C.H. emergency animal hospital in Asheville, will present a discussion on household toxins and poison prevention. He will cover other emergencies such as awareness about snake bites and prevention. Cost of the class is $35 which includes: instruction and demonstrations, an American Red Cross First Aid book and DVD for either dogs or cats. An additional book/DVD is $10.
