Nocturnal Arts Comes to Wollongong
The lower Crown Street Mall and Arts Precinct will provide the backdrop to an innovative after hours arts program, Nocturnal Arts, between 17 February and 5 March. As part of Nocturnal Arts local digital designers, street theatre artists, dancers and musicians will take over the City Centre for a series of pop-up performances. The event will run for three weeks, from Wednesday to Saturday evenings between 7.30-9.30pm. The performances will take place in the lower Crown Street Mall and Arts Precinct. “This is really exciting initiative and is an interesting way to foster lively cultural activities in the City Centre after dusk,’’ Wollongong City Council’s Cultural Development Coordinator Megan McKell said. “I invite everyone to come in and discover for themselves this whirlwind of activity in our City’s laneways and shopfronts. Plus, this isn’t just a spectator sport. The audience can interact with the performances.’’ One group involved in Nocturnal Arts is Static of the Radio Theatre. The troupe of untrained dancers will bust their moves to a playlist the audience can change. Other artists involved include digital designers Zender Bender, Four4 and Rise and Shine, and Laugher House Productions and The Seagull street theatre. Big Book Sale at local libraries Find your next read at Wollongong City Council’s Central and Warrawong Libraries book sale. The sale of ex-library titles started on Saturday 20 February and will continue until all books are sold. There is a wide range of adult fiction and non-fiction titles to buy – all for $1 or less. Non-fiction fans should head to Wollongong Central Library for subjects including art, gardening, literature and car manuals. Most adult-fiction, CDs and magazines will be sold at the Warrawong District Library book sale. Money raised from both sales will go towards new books. “Each year we love to add the latest books to our collection to make sure that what we offer reflects the community’s interests. We need to give the library stock a clean out every so often to make sure we have enough book shelf available,” Council’s Manager Library and Community Services Jenny Thompson said. “All of the books on sale have seen a lot of love over the years and we want to make sure that they continue to be read and enjoyed. This is a chance for people to come along and select a few books at a bargain price.” The Wollongong book sale will be held in the ground floor reading room during normal library hours and Warrawong book sale in the front reading area.

Majority of community oppose Council merger The overwhelming majority of Shellharbour residents are opposed to a merger of Shellharbour and Wollongong city councils. An IRIS survey conducted this week has found that 76.4 per cent of the community do not agree with the NSW State Government’s proposal to merge the two councils. A total of 71.4 per cent agree that locally elected representation on Council is important and 75.2 per cent believe that Shellharbour does not have a community of interest with Wollongong. “It is clear that the Shellharbour community does not want this proposed merge to go ahead,” said Mayor Marianne Saliba. “We are a proud community that is part of a progressive city that honours its culture and heritage,” Cr Saliba said. “What’s important now is that people share their concerns with the State Government, before submissions close on 28 February,” Cr Saliba said.

Staff launch in to ‘clean up’ campaign Shellharbour City Council staff began last week launching the 25th Clean Up Australia Day campaign with a rubbish collection session in the city. 30 staff volunteers spent one hour cleaning up litter in Harrison Park on Thursday18 February, around City Pond in Shellharbour City Centre. The day is part of Council’s long term commitment to improving the environment at a local level. Council’s Environmental Leadership Program was launched in July 2013 and supports staff to be environmentally aware, engaged and focused on delivering practical environmental outcomes for the organisation.
This is the second year that Council have undertaken a corporate clean-up at the park. Last year staff collected 180kg of rubbish, including12 bags of rubbish and 10 bags of recyclable materials, as well as two shopping trolleys which were removed from the pond. The National Clean Up Australia Day event will be held on Tuesday 1 March. “I encourage businesses to plan their own Clean Up Australia Day events with their staff members and also support the community to improve the local environment,” said Mayor Marianne Saliba. “This campaign raises awareness about the negative impact loose rubbish has on our environment, and empowers everyone involved to be part of the solution,” Cr Saliba said. instance if foreign investors suddenly sold their Australian real estate, creating a vast increase in supply of residential property, this could trigger a high price correction.
Chinese New Year was tipped by many in the industry to be a huge time for real estate in NSW. It wasn’t. Many Chinese buyers have left the market due to tighter regulations by the Australian government, tighter regulations from the Chinese government and an incoming over-supply of rental properties. Those that are left in the market are being particularly hesitant with the purse strings. This coming over-supply of rental properties is also having an impact on local investors. The latest figures by the Australian Bureau of Statistics points out that fewer are taking out loans. However, during December loans to owner occupiers rose. In 2014/2015 a record 19,450 apartments began construction, this figure only accounts for dwellings in buildings that are four storeys and above, which will come onto the market during this calendar year. At the same time Jonathan Tepper, founder of Varient Perception, told 60 Minutes that his research firm estimates that Sydney is about to enter a crash period for real estate property. The estimate given was a price drop of between 30% & 50%. The argument for this is that Australian will follow the same path as Ireland and the United States of America. However, analysts are suggesting that for a high impact price correction to occur additional factors need to be in play. For

Median house prices, in the Illawarra, (3 bed) for the month of February sit at $550,000, whilst in the past week the median has been $512,500. Median unit prices (2 bed) currently sit at $450,000 for the month of February. In the past week the median has sat at $457,500. The Illawarra auction market has slowed slightly with a clearance rate of 46%. However, this has been made up for by private treaty sales, with a 62% increase on the total amount of properties sold week on week.
