ARCHITECT OF THE MONTH Zaher Architects The Fernleigh residence is an alteration and addition of an existing Queenslander cottage located in the hinterland land of Byron Bay. The existing house is typical of Byron Bay hinterland weather board Queenslander cottage. The existing house sits on a 4.5 hectares block of land and had a one room addition in the 70’s in the form of an office and store room. The client brief was to dismantle the old above ground pool, and replace it with inground Pool , add an extra bedroom , reconfigure the kitchen, dining, office and living area. The solution: was to build an L shape pool with a large deck that connects the inside to the outside to make the most of the hinterland views through large sliding doors and create an outdoor entertaining / dining area. Due to Budget restraint most of the addition internally had to take place under the existing roof. The existing living / dining areas were too small and unpractical as they lacked an entertainment space and
they felt as if they were situated in a hallway and circulation space. The living dining areas were relocated away from the hallway but maintained a connection with the newly reconfigured kitchen and now have their own aspect, vista and connection to the outdoor and the pool and the deck. The new office was also reconfigured to be part of the new living dining area but maintain some privacy and a new outlook to the eastern views and connection to the the pool and the deck. A new kids bedroom was constructed where the old living area once was and now has access to the playroom, Laundry and the new reconfigured bathroom. The overall solution separates the sleeping areas from the entertaining and living areas whilst maintaining the old charming character of the house and making the most of the views , the outdoors and the new pool and pool deck.
