This is the percentage of babies being breastfed upon leaving Dublin's maternity hospitals. This compares with eight out of every 10 in the UK. Across Europe on average nine out of every 10 babies born are breastfed, with almost all babies born in Norway, Denmark and Sweden being breastfed. By three months, four in 10 babies in Ireland are breastfed. The figures were released by the HSE which is trying to encourage more Irish mothers to breastfeed.

Swords In Brief... Swords hosts ‘Gaming Gathering’ for Gamestop

Gamestop, the world’s largest video game retailer, recently chose Swords as the host for the retailer’s three day gathering event for gaming enthusiasts. The event’s chief architect is GameStop’s European vice president, Niall Lawlor, who came up with the idea of bring some 500 GameStop managers from across Europe to getto grips with the next generation of gaming technology. “What better place than Dublin to hold this major event for Gamestop in our North European headquarters in the year of the Gathering,” said Lawlor, commenting the selection of Swords as the European centre for GameStop’s IT, e-commerce, audit and accounting, merchandising and marketing functions. The company, which has 52 stores in Ireland, currently employs 30,000 people globally and has a turnover of €9 billion.

Fingal Council invite applications for sports funding in October

Fingal County Council's Sports Office in conjunction with the Irish Sports Council and County Dublin VEC invite applications for funding under the Youth Sports Small Grants Scheme. This scheme is open to Community, Voluntary or Sporting organisations working with young people and based in the Fingal administrative area. Clubs affiliated to an Irish Sports Council recognised national governing body (e.g. GAA, FAI etc) or a recognised Disability Organisation may apply for this grant. The application process is very straightforward

with Paul Cantwell

and clubs may apply for grant aid for equipment purchase, referee/coaching fees etc. Applications for projects designed to create a positive impact on participation levels and which also demonstrate sustainability within the club are more likely to gain funding approval. For further information on this scheme, or to request an application form, please contact Fingal Sports Unit at 01 890 6256 or email pauline. gilsenan@fingalcoco.ie. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is 4pm Friday 11th October 2013.

Local Fundraising Group scores with funding for playgrounds The Swords Needs Playgrounds fundraising group received a substantial boost recently when the Fingal Leader Partnership announced it is to provide €150,000 towards construction of the playgrounds in the local area. “This is the news we’ve been waiting for,” said Marica Killi, one of the fundraisers told swordstoday.ie. “This Friday we were given a contract offering us funding for €150K, which means the playgrounds will definitely get built. “We still have €8,000 to raise as a community as we committed to raising 11% of the total project cost, but we are very nearly at our target of €250,000,” she added. There are a number of events planned in the near future to help raise further funds. To find out more information on forthcoming fundraising events check out the facebook page www. facebook.com/swordsneedsplaygrounds.

Dying for a coffee?

A friend tells she’s buying a coffee pod machine. Another friend sent me a link to a short movie about Midway Island, in the north Pacific, where many of those non-recyclable pods will end up, in the Gyre. The film shows dead and rotted sea bird carcases, starved to death because they’ve eaten plastics instead of food. I’d love to see an explanation of why those pods are necessary to the making of good coffee. I use a straightforward stove top espresso pot I’ve had for forty years or more and I’m prepared to bet that so long as you keep it clean 99% of the population can’t tell one type from another. If you don’t know about plastics and The Gyre start googling and educate yourself – I defy you to read and watch what you find without crying over what we do to our planet and its inhabitants.

Phil thinks we're clean enough

With all this rubbish finishing up in the environment I was, not to put too fine a point on it, both grieved and angered by the decision of Minister Phil Hogan that we don’t need either a packaging levy or a deposit and refund scheme for drinks containers. Apparently Minister Hogan thinks we have “a very successful packaging recovery and recycling performance to date in Ireland”. If by that he means things aren’t quite as filthy as they used to be he’s right, but I’ve recently walked over Howth Head and Clogherhead and both footpaths featured cans, bottles, plastic wrapping and a whole

By Kathy Marsh, Sonairte

collection of other goodies we don’t need to have strewn around. Of course I’m an old fogey so my memories of the days when cans and bottles were always returned for cash and never left, because they were a handy source of pocket money for us kids if someone did leave them lying around aren’t evidence. The Minister thinks the cost “to the legislative process, to public administration, to business” makes social responsibility too expensive. He doesn’t mention the clean up costs here in Ireland or the cost to those birds on Midway Island. Or maybe he doesn’t think cleaning up is necessary.

Bags, plastic and paper, still out there

And it isn’t just plastics that cause the problems. Paper bags cause so many environmental problems that Northern Ireland has brought in a tax on all single use bags, paper as well as plastic, and several American cities, including Washington DC, have a levy on them. And while we are on that Midway effect did you know that we now use six times as many single use plastic bags, despite the increased tax, as we did just after the tax was introduced when we were all aware of it. That’s 120 million plastic bags now going back into the waste stream. We’ve all slipped into bad habits – me included I’m afraid.

South County tackles bonfires

More toxic rubbish goes into the waste stream every year at this time with the Hallowe’en bonfires. Once upon a time our annual celebration of the coming of winter featured bonfires of dead wood from the forests.

A fantasy farming world

Meanwhile it isn’t only Minister Phil Hogan who seems to be having difficulties with concept of environmental responsibility. The Environmental Pillar is casting serious doubts on the findings of a report commissioned by the Minister for Agriculture on the environmental impacts of Food Harvest 2020. They say that: "The conclusions of the report, which state that the impacts on our waters, biodiversity, soils and climate will be slight or negligible, are just not credible. These conclusions are based on a fantasy world in which all farmers use best available technology and obey all the rules regarding environmental protection." Which is pretty much my own experience. Many of my neighbours are farmers. Some of them work really hard to protect the environment, others couldn’t care less. Most people want what is best for their planet and their children’s future – it’s just a few rotten apples that spoil the barrel for the rest of us.

The threat from agri growth

But I digress. The Environmental Pillar is calling for a commitment from government to re-assess its Food Harvest 2020 policy which committed the

country to massive growth in Ireland's agricultural production without first assessing the impacts this would have on the country’s environmental sustainability. The report is based on a best case scenario. A worst case scenario would be an environmental disaster. I’m sure the truth lies somewhere between the two but the Department of Agriculture doesn’t seem to realize it needs to work on the necessary sticks and carrots if the best is to be achieved.

We're driving cleaner cars

Just in case all this is making you contemplate emigration, even if you do have a job, here are a couple of pieces of good news to finish with. An Taisce tells us that the reforms to motor tax fees and fuel duty means that we are now 7th best for the sales of more efficient cars, with a steady drop in CO2 emissions. Best brands for meeting 2020 targets are Toyota, Volvo and Daimler.

Our first community windfarm opens

And in Nenagh the Templederry Community Wind Farm is now connected to EirGrid, supplying 3,500 homes in the Nenagh area with green electricity. The community ownership of wind farms is common in Denmark and Germany, but rare elsewhere. Lets hope lots of other irish communities will follow their example. The project has taken almost fifteen years to get up and running, but provides a template for the rest of us.

Angler's Angles Fly fishing for pike

with Keith McDonnell

too.The tackle used is dictated mainly by the size of fly but it is possible to use heavier trout tackle with good casting technique. Fly fishing for pike can be very visual. It is exciting to watch a large fish with a mouth full of sharp teeth chase down your fly and put up spectacular fights once hooked. I would recommend speaking to someone with experience before heading out for your first pike fly adventure as there are a couple of important considerations to ensure safe handling of the fish. I would be more than happy to answer any questions on the subject and you can contact me through my website below. So why not give it a try and see the sporting qualities of this superb fish for yourself?

The trout and salmon fishing season is finished for another year and really 2013 will be remembered as a disappointing year for angling due to lack of rainfall. Many fly anglers hang up their fishing gear for the winter but there is a much underrated species that can be targeted with fly tackle if you haven’t had enough sport during the game angling season! The pike sometimes gets a raw deal from game anglers and is often seen as a pest. This is probably due to the fish’s reputation as a voracious predator and it will feed on trout and salmon where it shares water with them. Keith McDonnell is a fly fishing guide and Ireland is one of the best places in Europe instructor and big trout nut based in Dublin. www.fluffchucker.com to catch large pike and there is practically no end to the number of lakes, rivers and canals here that hold pike. There are many places that will probably never have been explored with a fly. Fly fishing is of the most effective ways to catch pike and I have seen it “out fish” more conventional pike fishing methods. The flies used are are very mobile in the water and are generally attractor patterns designed to get and aggressive response from the fish. They tend to loosely resemble small fish. Garden Growing With Gerry Norton Using autumn to prepare for next year

As we enter October let us all hope that the lovely late September weather will continue. I’m old enough to remember many pleasant and warm Octobers over the years so we must be optimistic and pray that we’re in for a mild spell to ease us though whatever winter has in store for us. Having said that, I enjoy the order that the seasons give to our lives and I have no problem looking forward to dealing with winter, think warm log fires, hot water bottles/whiskies (not together!), soul food like casseroles and Irish stew and my alltime favourite, porridge. In the meantime there’s work to be done.

Veg plot finished

The veg plot has had its day apart from a few beetroots which I hope will swell up in the next few weeks and there are a few lettuces yet to harvest. The container grown potatoes a late variety called Cara are almost ready

to be harvested. Apart from that I’ll have to wait until next year to start it all again. At this time of the year I wish I had the space for a small poly tunnel or green house to lengthen the growing season.

Don't lose the leaves

As the trees start to drop their leaves it’s important to rake away the fallen leaves as they will damage a lawn over the next few months. Don’t put the fallen leaves in the brown bin but instead put them in refuse bags and plan ahead to have your own leaf mould which is a marvellous soil enricher. While it will take at least a year for the leaves to compost its well worth it as you cant buy anything as good as this for your soil. And it’s free!!! If your garden, like mine, is small and you don’t have any trees just go to your local park and gather leaves to your hearts content.

Next year's seeds Autumn is the time of year for gathering seeds from trees, shrubs

n It’s important to rake away the fallen leaves as they will damage a lawn over the next few months. and perennials that have flowered and are now laden with seeds. Germinate these seeds next spring or late winter for new and free plants to increase your stock for next year. All gardens have plants that are now in seed and are ready to use for next year. Plants like Dierama - (Angels fishing rod) and Salvia (wild sage) not to mention Agapanthus, sweet pea etc. It’s a good idea to put the

different seeds into envelopes, label the envelopes and put them away in a dry shady place until next spring. As Halloween approaches the garden centres etc have started to stock bulbs for next year. While October is a good time to buy spring flowering bulbs there is still plenty of time to choose whatever it is that you would like for next year but remember as the

next few months pass the quality of the bulbs will deteriorate. Finally here are a few must do things for October: 4 Divide overgrown perennials. 4 Dig up and store dahlias, gladioli and summer flowering bulbs. 4 Lift and divide rhubarb. 4 Sow grass seed but be quick. 4 Take hardwood cuttings from shrubs.

Finally folks, if you need any information on gardening or if you have any tips or suggestions which I can pass on, please send them to me at livinglandescapes@eircom.net. I would be delighted to quote for any/all of your garden requirements from set-up organic vegetable plots to restoration of neglected gardens, design, planting and maintenance. No charge for initial visit and I will travel within reason.

You work and live in Wexford, for many Dubliners there is something special about Wexford, what do you think that is? When Catherine and I first visited Dunbrody we realised there was something special about the area. We are surrounded by 14 beaches, there are some beautiful unspoilt villages nearby and the people in Wexford always have a friendly smile to welcome you. We fell in love with Wexford and it’s a fantastic place to bring up a family. The community in Dunbrody are very fond of you, how important do you think it is to have a good close knit community? We employ over 50 people here at Dunbrody, mostly from the locality and I have to say the team we have are extremely loyal and hardworking. Also, do you think it is important for businesses like Dunbrody House to keep the community on side? We are in Dunbrody House since 1997 and enjoy a good relationship with the community. As we are in a small locality, nearly everyone from nearby has a relative or friend working here, and we support local fundraisers and events as much as possible. What do you think are the ethos behind a good business plan? Honesty is the best policy. Be true to your business and Staff How do you target tourists to visit Dunbrody house? Internet, word of mouth, Tourism Ireland etc? We are lucky to get a lot of repeat guests here at Dunbrody, and having the Cookery School here at Dunbrody is a real bonus as people are always

interested in learning about food. We have a fantastic treatment based Spa onsite too, our Manager Laura does a fantastic job and our guests love the variety of treatments available. We also use Social Media, as does nearly every business in the country to promote our business, and the work by our Tourism bodies is relentless in bringing back the buck to Ireland. Did you ever think about leaving Ireland behind once the downturn hit? To be honest, as a father and employer, you do whatever is necessary to keep things going, so I can’t say it never crossed my mind. We have been lucky enough to get through this difficult period and I believe things are improving. This summer has seen a rise in occupancy at the hotel, with more tourists visiting Wexford, popping in for Afternoon Teas and Dinner. This has been a major boost for the region and hopefully it will continue. Tell us a little bit about your new series on RTE 1 ‘Modern Irish Food’. What can viewers expect to learn from the series? What’s the core of its message? Modern Irish Food is about taking traditional Irish recipes and adding a little twist. I use the wealth of ingredients available on my doorstep, with tips on how to create and serve with simplicity and flair. I have also released a book to accompany the series which is an easy to follow, step-by-step guide for home cooks to recreate my recipes. Between running Dunbrody house, your many other business ventures and media interests, I’m sure it can be very pressurising at times, what do you do to make sure that it all doesn’t get too much to handle? Firstly, I spend as much time as I can with my family, my three children – Emily, Sophie and Tom, and of course, my beautiful wife Catherine, keep my feet firmly on the ground, they are everything to me and a constant source of joy. Collecting the children from school, watching them playing a match, and picking berries in the fields, small things that mean so much. What do you think is the secret of a happy household? At our house we endeavour to have at least one meal a day together at the table. At mealtimes we discuss what has happened in our day, it’s nice to be able to get the stories from the children about their day in school and what has made them happy or sad that day. Emily is away during the week at school so we make an extra effort to have quality time as a family over the weekend, it isn’t always possible but we do our best. When you started your career in the Old Schoolhouse, did you ever imagine you’d come

as far as you have or was the hunger for success always there? There was always the hunger for success, not in a materialistic way but I am passionate about food, and always wanted to be able to produce good locally sourced food to the highest standard. What chef doesn’t? You do a lot of live TV on many different continents around the world, what’s the funniest thing that has happened to you on live TV? There have been a few funny moments! The one that really sticks out in my mind was recently on NBC in the US. Whilst demonstrating I split my trousers, a big rip can be heard and a few stifled giggles. I said 'I just ripped my pants', which although embarrassing is just only one of those funny moments. Being surrounded by delicious food most of the time must be tempting, what do you do to keep fit and healthy? I should do a lot more; to be honest I am always promising myself to get fitter in the New Year and not following through. I play golf when I can, walk on the beach and enjoy the occasional swim. I do believe in portion control though so I enjoy

a little bit of everything in moderation. Childhood obesity is becoming a common problem in Ireland today, as a chef what advice do you have for parents who are encountering this problem? I was recently interviewed on radio and said that I believe we need to bring children back into the kitchen. Also I would like to see some basic cooking skills introduced in primary school so children understand more about their food choices. Whilst not everyone agrees with this, it’s my opinion and I stand by it. My mother inspired me to cook when I was younger, and I do think when children head to college they should be able to cook healthy, filling meals with basic ingredients, not be living on processed foods. Finally, can you name three things that would definitely make it on your bucket list? • Eat in the top ten restaurants in the world • Have a pint in the top ten bars in the world • Play golf with the top ten player in the world in their favourite course

All about Dublin 1

A Place in Time

The Coming of the Railway

The decision to construct two piers at Dun Laoghaire meant that the original asylum harbour had become a full blown trading port - a fast connection to Dublin became a priority. A ship canal was considered too expensive and the daring suggestion surfaced that maybe a railway could be built. First it was necessary to judge what traffic already existed. Clerks, stationed in Blackrock, from February to October 1831, 6am to 9pm each day, counted: 29,256 Private Carriages, 113,495 Private Jaunting Cars, 149,754 Public Cars, and many other forms of transport. Railway was in its infancy and certainly still unproven on this scale in Ireland. The idea also met with substantial opposition from landowners along the proposed line from Westland Row to Dun Laoghaire. Even today, the line shows the evidence of what transpired - a tunnel, bridges, towers and private bathing places were provided at substantial cost. William Dargan agreed to build everything except the stations and other buildings, engines and coaches, for £84,000. The first sod was turned on April 11, 1833. Stone was brought from Seapoint cliffs and Dalkey, nearer to Dublin, Donnybrook lime-

stone was used. Work near Merrion proved difficult as the land was below the highwater level and drainage proved difficult. From there to Blackrock it was necessary to build embankments, reclaiming about 50 acres from the sea. The first train (drawn by horses) carried the company directors and their friends over the line on July 31, 1834. On October 4, the engine ‘Vauxhall’ brought a short train from Westland Row to Williamstown and back. Within days there were trips to Dun Laoghaire, and on December 18 the line opened. The terminus was then at the West Pier. There were

nine further trips that day "all packed to discomfort" (DART users please note) and "applauded by crowds". On the hour there were trains from both ends of the line from 9am to 4pm. An extension of the line, began in 1836, destroyed the original Dún (an earthwork) from which Dun Laoghaire takes it name, and the Martello Tower inside it. It also created what is now the main railway station (Mallin Station) beside the entrance to the Harbour. An excerpt from 'Blackrock, Dun Laoghaire and Dalket' with Paintings by Roche and text by Ken Finlay. It is published by Cottage Publications and costs around e22.

Lesser Known Dubliners

Edited by Zoz Alan Gordon Cunningham

Alan Gordon Cunningham (1887-1983) was born in Dublin. He joined the British Army in 1906 and served with the Royal Horse Artillery during WWI, receiving the Military Cross (1915) and the Distinguished Service Order (1918). He rose through the ranks and by the outbreak of WWI was commander of the 5th Anti-Aircraft Division. After a number of brief appointments commanding infantry division he was promoted to Lieutenant-General in charge of the East Africa Force in Kenya. Cunningham led his forces against Italian troops in British Somaliland and Ethiopia. Between April and May 1941 both objectives were successfully completed with the surrender of the Italian Army, 50,000 prisoners taken, and just 500 casualties. On the basis of his success he was appointed to command the newly-formed Eighth Army in North Africa in 1941. In the face of stiff opposition from German forces, commanded by General Irwin Rommel, Cunningham suffered setbacks and losses. After he requested that the Eighth Army go on the defensive he was relieved of his command. He served the remainder of the war as Commandant of the Staff College, Camberley (1942) and General Officer C-in-C in Northern Ireland (1943) and Eastern Command (1944). He was knighted in 1941.

He was promoted to the rank of general in October 1945 - he retired from the British Army in 1946 - and served as High Commissioner of Palestine until 1948 - a turbulent time during which British rule was wound up and the states of Palestine and Israel were created. General Sir Alan Gordon Cunningham, GCMG, KCB, DSO, MC, died in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, in 1983.

Dublin Rolfing – helping the body to natural healing Advice Rolfing/structural integration is a comprehensive system of deep tissue manipulation and movement education, aimed at improving health and well being. Rolfing is a hands-on tradition. In a series of 7-10 sessions, the body is gradually re-balanced, so that chronically tight muscles and stiff joints (knees, hips) are released. The grounded and realigned body therefore will move with more ease and flexibility.

ments. Each session has a specific goal and builds on the result of the previous one. The client lies on a cushioned table or sits on a bench, while the Rolfer applies deep and slow pressure to lengthen and reposition the tissues. The client may be asked to breathe into the area being worked on or to make particular movements to enhance the release.

How do we get out of alignment?

Movement education is integral to my Rolfing practice and is essential to prevent the same (old) patterns that caused the problems in the first place. A passive model of a straight, erect body does not address our dynamic needs. The concept of movement includes breathing, gesture and general demeanor, how we express ourselves as human beings in society. For example: Many clients are standing and walking on the outside of their feet, thereby restricting their hip movements with every step they take. Many others hyperextend (lock) their knees, with the result that the weight of the body is concentrated behind their knees. Again, this leads to chronic tension in the lower back. During each session, a person's ability to develop new and healthier ways of using the body is facilitated. Rolfing aims for long lasting changes in the body and usually achieves excellent results.

Lengthy sitting in the office, slouched in cars, watching TV while slumped on a couch, bending over a laptop, injuries, etc, can all can lead to poor posture resulting in chronic tension. The gym/ fitness culture does little to improve our physical state, because the focus is limited to stamina. Tense and tightened muscles can be further constricted by rigourous workout routines, causing even more tension and strain. Stress, as well as physical and psychological trauma, are the additional contributors to the misalignment of the body. A tense body then has to generate extra energy and effort to compensate for malfunctioning, which leads to tiredness and fatigue, chronic aches and pains. The principles of Rolfing

Seamus Keane, M.A., M.P.H. Certified Advanced Rolfer

The main principle of Rolfing is gravity. The strongest force a human body is subjected to is gravity. The human head weighs between 7-9 pounds. If it is thrust forward by just an inch, the neck muscles have to carry an additional 20-30 pounds. Muscular effort is then required to prevent that person from falling forward.

Rolfing and Movement Education

The body must now fight against gravity. Once we are out of alignment, it is impossible to straighten up. The connective tissue has tightened and shortened and lacks flexibility. The second principle is elasticity. The main supportive structure of the body is not its bones, as is conventionally understood, but rather the spaces in between, the connective tissue or fascia. Every muscle and part of a muscle, in fact every cell in our body, is wrapped in this water-soluble substance. This substance toughens with stress or injury to provide additional support for malfunction. When thickened, blood flow is restricted. However, due to its jelly-like consistency, the texture of fascia can be restored. This is achieved by the hands-on technique specific to Rolfing. How does Rolfing re-align the body?

Following a visual assessment of both the body's structure and function, the Rolfer systematically reorganizes the body's tissues and re-aligns its seg-

Beyond: Two Souls Developer: Quantic Dream • Platform: PS3

Brought to you by the same team that created Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls leads on from Heavy Rain's cue of creating an interactive drama. You play as Jodi Holmes through 15 years of her life, as she emotionally wrestles with a paranormal entity that influences her - and the people around her - in various ways. The entity is known as Aiden, and much of the game focuses on what exactly Aiden is. It's an utterly compelling set-up, and one that is narratively propelled along by a wonderful performance by Ellen Page. It's a slow paced and character driven game despite having various action scenes. Interacting with environments is excellent and intuitive, while the control

Flash Fiction

scheme that replaces Heavy Rain's awful QTE segments is a huge step-up, still feels a little hollow and disconnecting. Despite it pushing the whole “interactive drama” idea a little too much (to the point where it just feels like you're watching a film), Beyond: Two Souls is a journey worth taking, and offers more emotion than most games are willing to even attempt. FIFA 14 Developer: EA Canada • Platform: Multiple Platforms There was a time when Pro Evolution Soccer was better than the FIFA series, a time when EA were not interested in bringing innovation to the series. However, that time is passed, and while Pro Evolution Soccer is lagging behind, FIFA has reclaimed its throne.

Game Reaction with Denis Murphy

Yearly releases never see great innovation due to short development periods, but FIFA 14 is different. It's a worthy improvement on the already great FIFA 13, and delivers one of the best and most realistic football videogames to date. The game flows well, and this is in part helped along by the truly wonderful animations and player interactions. There's also a fantastic sense of atmosphere and immersion in FIFA 14, something that I think many gamers will simply overlook. Everything from crowd chanting, players who look like their real-life counterparts and ball physics do a great job of making it feel completely authentic. Featuring fully licensed teams, beautifully smooth game-play and controls, and 32 licensed stadiums in all their glory, FIFA 14 brings new meaning to the term “The Beautiful Game". With Ed McShane

A ring of truth 24 years of marriage, great years, lots of laughs, lots of trips, lots of memories. Still great friends but with no kids, nostalgia for the time spent together was part of the glue that held them together. All this symbolised by the ring and now the ring was gone. 'He's going to kill me,' she thought. The phone rang. "Just checking in," he said in a funny voice, garbled. "See you later," she signed off cheerily. He sounded a bit odd, could he suspect that she lost the ring already? How could he know? The ring wasn't gold, it was silver. They chose silver so that it couldn't be South African gold. They had met at an AntiApartheid march and the things they had in common never changed over the years. They marched against nuclear power, for the Sandinistas, against Reagan, for wind power, against capitalism, for slow food, against GM. The ring never came off, not in the shower, not in the bed, not in the hospital, never. She hadn't taken it off, it fell off. Her fingers had shrunken like the rest of her with the cancer. As it became looser over the months she was afraid it might fall off. Along with all the other signs of decline, losing the ring would take on a greater significance. She searched the bedroom, rummaged under the clothes, retraced her steps from the bedroom to the kitchen where she had cooked breakfast and made him lunch. The unlikely became plausible. She checked the fridge and the vacuum cleaner, even though she hadn't used it. She eyed the dog suspiciously, checked the windows for magpies. It was now after lunch. She had four hours to find it. The phone rang. "Just checking in," he said in a funny voice, more garbled. "You sound a bit odd," she said. "I've a toothache," he said. "I had to go to the dentist. I'm on the way home." Now it was time to panic. Her mind raced. Bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen. She couldn't think where it might have come off. She'd tell him as soon as he comes in. No she'd wait, it might turn up. No, she better come straight out with it. He won't be mad, he's never mad. He'll be sad about it. He wouldn't blame her anyway. But that's worse. She'll have to blame herself. The keys rattle in the door. Footsteps in the hall, kitchen door opens, he makes straight for her. Eyes narrowed, lips pursed, good humour spreads along the crows feet from his eyes. "Lose anything?," he enquires. Her mouth drops open. "Well, I lost something," he says. Before she can speak he hands her a folded piece of tissue. She opens it. It's most of a tooth. She doesn't understand. He hands her another folded piece of tissue. She opens it, slower. It's the ring. "I found it," he accuses. "In my sandwich." "'Found'," he adds, "isn't quite what happened". He cups her face with his hands and draws her lips to his, lingers, lets go. "It's only a ring," he says.

An energy supplement that boosts the heart Not only does coenzyme Q10 increase your energy levels in a natural way, but Scandinavian scientists have even discovered that it gives the heart muscle a substantial boost that is particularly valuable for the ageing population.

T

here are many different things you can take to increase your energy but one of the things that has really baffled scientists is coenzyme Q10, a vitamin-like compound that is essential for human life. The body is able to make Q10 but as we age our levels drop because we produce less of the substance. Taking supplements of Q10 increases the body’s energy turnover in a natural way but it does more than that. It gives the heart muscle a remarkable boost and that was clearly demonstrated by Swedish scientists last year when they

tested Q10 on a group of elderly men and women.

Fewer deaths, better heart function

All the participants were normal, healthy elderly people who were randomly assigned to a supplement of Q10 (and selenium) or identical “dummy” pills. After five years, the scientists could see that people in the Q10 group t had 54% fewer cardiovascular deaths t had substantially stronger hearts t displayed measurable signs of less heart strain In other words, the supplement produced not only increased levels of energy but it actually targeted the heart, which is particularly needy of energy to carry out its function.

Your body’s fuel

More and more people are finding out about Q10 and have embraced it as an indispensable shortcut to energy

Facts about the coenzyme Q10 t Q10 is found in some foods such as meat, soy, sardines and, broccoli but not in very abundant amounts. t The cells that depend the most on Q10 are situated in the heart, brain, liver, kidneys, and skeletal muscle. t There are no known side effects of taking Q10

IE_Q10_Article_Ad_Draft_0913_210x297

t People taking cholesterol lowering medication have an increased need for Q10 t Science has observed a positive effect of Q10 on heart failure, male infertility and certain neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.

and well being. This vitamin- like substance that can be taken in capsule form provides a boost that you cannot get with black coffee, ginseng or any other stimulant you have tried in the past. It fuels your cells by helping them convert food into energy. By taking Q10 you support your cellular metabolism, enabling all of your cells to churn out more energy and benefit body functions, namely that of the heart.

By combining Q10 with vitamin C, you can obtain an ever better effect. Vitamin C is most commonly known for its role in the immune system but science has also found that it supports the body’s cellular energy production, thereby contributing to the effect of Q10.

Loads of benefits

When Q10 was originally discovered back in 1957, scientists extracted it from beef heart muscle tissue, and in the time that has passed since then

researchers have focused quite a lot on how Q10 affects the heart. Dozens of studies show that supplementation with Q10 in the range of 100-400 mg daily can t reduce upper (systolic) and lower (diastolic) blood pressure t increase the heart muscle’s ability to contract t improve exercise tolerance in heart patients t enable the heart to function with less strain

In fact, a recent Danish study (QSymbio) demonstrated that patients with chronic heart failure fared substantially better when they were given supplements of Q10 in addition to their conventional heart drug therapy. Firsthand History

Walking through Dublin in 1834

An excerpt from "A Journey Throughout Ireland, During the Spring, Summer, and Autumn of 1834," by Henry David Inglis (1795-1835). The book was frequently quoted around the time in House of Commons debates concerning Ireland! "In walking through the streets of Dublin, strange and striking contrasts are presented between grandeur and poverty. In Merrion-square, St. Stephen's-green, and elsewhere, the ragged wretches that are sitting on the steps, contrast strongly with the splendour of the houses and the magnificent equipages that wait without: pass from Merrion-square or Grafton-street, about three o'clock, into what is called the Liberty, and you might easily fancy yourself in another and distant part of Europe. There are strong resemblances to the population of Spanish towns which the pauper population of Dublin presented. I saw the same rags, and apparent indolence - the result of a want of employment, and a low state of moral feeling: boys with bare heads and feet, lying on the pavement, whose potato had only to be converted into a melon or a bit of wheaten bread, to make them fit subjects for Murillo; and houses and cottages in a half-ruined state, with paneless windows or no windows at all. I was also struck with the small number of provision-

shops. In London every fifth or sixth shop is a bacon and cheese-shop. In Dublin, luxuries of a different kind offer their temptations. What would be the use of opening a bacon shop, where the lower orders, who are elsewhere the chief purchasers of bacon, cannot afford to eat bacon, and live upon potatoes? As I have mentioned the lower orders in Dublin, I may add, that the house in which I lived in Kildare-street, exactly opposite to the Royal Dublin Society (now Dáil Éireann), was then exhibiting a cattle-show. After the cattle had been fed, the half-eaten turnips became the perquisite of the crowd of ragged boys and girls. Many and fierce were the scrambles for these precious relics; and a half-gnawed turnip, when once secured, was guarded with the most vigilant jealousy, and was lent for a mouthful to another longing tatterdemalion, as much apparently as an act of extraordinary favour, as if the root had been a pineapple. Yet these mouthfuls were freely given; and I have seen, that where two boys contended who should take charge of a gentleman's horse, the boy who obtained the preference and got the penny or twopence, divided it with his rival. There is ostentation, too, displayed in the most singular things. I have counted 27 hackney-coaches and 16 cars, in the funeral procession of a person in the humbler walks of life: and the passion for display on the part of the deceased's relatives, seemed to have been communicated to his guests, for the carriages were all thrown open; and from the gaiety of the dresses, one might have easily mistaken the cavalcade for a procession of wedding guests."

Graham Connor's Movie Advice R.I.P.D. HHHHH

Directed by Robert Schwenke. Starring Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Bacon. Killed in the line of duty, Nick Walker finds himself returned from the afterlife as an officer in the R.I.P.D. – the Rest In Peace Department. Partnered with Roy Pulsipher, a lawman of the Old West, it is their job to tackle the crooks of the Underworld.. I’m sure someone thought it would be great to take a comic book that mixed Men in Black with Ghostbusters and just a smidge of Jonah Hex and turn it into a film – a sure fire box office smash no doubt. Unfortunately that has not happened. To say R.I.P.D. is a terrible film would be wrong, it has its moments but overall it just does not work. Jeff Bridges takes a little of his Rooster Cogburn from True Grit and this proves to be the best part of the film as he seems to be getting a kick out of his character. Ryan Reynolds on the other hand just mugs his way through and you get the feeling that he doesn’t want to be there at all. It is very predictable as it mixes bits and pieces from other films and ends up being very light on originality. Which is a shame. R.I.P.D. should have been a lot better and if it had have been made a few decades ago then maybe it would, but right now it just seems too much like other films we have seen in the last few years.

Advice: Leave it alone

Rush HHHHH

Directed by Ron Howard. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl & Olivia Wilde. It is 1976 and two radically different men, James Hunt and Niki Lauda, dominate Formula 1 racecar driving. Who will win the world title and at what cost?. There have been many race car movies, Days of Thunder, Le Mans, Senna and Driven to name but a few. Most do not succeed for the simple fact that they do not get the balance right, the balance between caring about the people when they are behind the wheel and when they are not. Rush finds this balance almost perfectly. It helps that this is a true story, a story that Howard tells in a remarkably honest way. There are no faked or needless dramas here; everything you see is real. In fact, the race footage makes up a very small part of this film, but when it hits you it hits hard. Both Hemsworth and Bruhl are fantastic, Bruhl in particular. You believe that they really are Hunt and Lauda, so real is the transformation. You don’t need to be a petrol head to enjoy this film – I certainly am not and I loved it from start to finish.

Advice: It should take pole position.

Clipping your rabbit’s and guinea pig’s nails

How often? How often you clip your pet’s nails depends on several factors. Front and rear nails grow at different rates. Environment plays a role in nail length – are your pets exercised on carpet or on concrete for example. Harder surfaces will help to wear nails down faster. For rabbits, behaviour is also a factor – rabbits that like to dig can wear their nails down with this activity. Usually anywhere between 1 and 6 months is normal for rabbits and approximately every 2-6 weeks for guinea pigs. What will I need? In order to clip your pet’s nails you will need a nail trimmer such as those seen in the picture. Avoid using human nail clippers as these provide less control and there is a risk that you can split the nail or that the blade could slip. We also recommend that you have a towel on hand and some styptic powder or cornstarch in case of accidents.

How to trim? First get yourself and your pet comfortable. We find it best to have someone help to hold the rabbit or guinea pig while you trim the nail especially if they are particularly wriggly! Always extend the feet in a natural position to avoid discomfort to your rabbit or guinea pig. Find the vein in the nail, known as the ‘quick’. This is a pinker area of nail and cutting it will cause bleeding and pain. You always cut the nail below the quick – as seen in

these pictures. Some nails are dark and it can be difficult to see the quick. In this case be conservative and take the bare minimum off or alternatively shine a torch under the nail. This will help to highlight the quick. Should you accidentally cut the quick you can apply styptic powder, a styptic stick or cornstarch to the wound. This will help to stop the bleeding. Apply pressure until bleeding stops. Remember: You should never lay your rabbits on their back for any reason. This is also called ‘trancing’. They are not relaxed – this is a fear response and they are actually in distress. If you need help learning how to trim your pet’s nails you can contact your vet or you can contact us here at Dublin Small Animal Rescue on facebook or by email: dublinsmallanimalrescue@gmail.com. Coping with migrane Q: I have been getting migraines for a number of years, but they are becoming more frequent over the past few months. I would normally take Solpadeine or some similar painkiller, but they seem to be doing little to help now. Is there anything else that I could take? It seems a bit pointless to go to the doctor with just a headache? A: You say you get migraines, but have you been medically diagnosed with migraine? People often use the term “migraine” to describe any bad headache, but migraine is actually a specific illness with symptoms, causes and treatments that can be quite different from other types of headache. Migraine usually affects just one side of the head and the pain is generally pulsating in nature. Attacks are usually accompanied by nausea, sometimes with vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light or sound. Migraine attacks can last anything from two hours up to three days. Some people get an “aura” before an attack which may involve visual disturbances, weakness or a sensation of pins and needles. If you have never discussed these headaches with your doctor, I would suggest that you make an appointment with your GP who will ask you about your symptoms to determine if it is migraine or another type of headache such as cluster headaches, tension headaches or another condition. First line treatment of migraine is often over-the-counter painkillers. Solpadeine or other medicines containing codeine, are generally only recommended for short term use as they can be habit-forming. Paracetamol and ibuprofen can both be taken together and this combination can provide very effective pain relief. If nausea tends to be a problem, a medicine containing domperidone, such as Motilium, can also be taken if needed. McCabe’s also sell a product called Migracap which is a device placed over the head which blocks out light and provides cooling relief to the head area. There are also prescription-only treatments which treat the root of migraine, by targeting blood vessels and nerves in and around the brain. These drugs are called Triptans and include zolmitriptan and frovatriptan amongst others. They are not painkillers, but can provide near-total relief within a couple of hours when they are taken early in a migraine episode. If migraines attacks are frequent, a preventative treatment may be prescribed which can reduce the incidence of attacks. These need to be taken regularly and will have no effect in treating an existing migraine. There are a range of different preventative treatments available on prescription.

Search is on to find Volunteer of the Year

The search is on to find Ireland’s Volunteer of the Year with the launch of the Panadol supported Volunteer Ireland Awards 2013. Launching the Awards, RTE Presenter Keelin Shanley called on people to go to www.volunteer.ie and nominate ordinary people who do extraordinary things in their communities. The Volunteer Ireland Awards are the major annual initiative to celebrate volunteering in Ireland that are coordinated by Volunteer Ireland and supported by Panadol. The Awards invite entries from both the North and South of Ireland. Volunteer Ireland CEO Yvonne McKenna said that the Awards celebrate and recognise the thousands of remarkable people across the Island of Ireland who selflessly give their time and talent to benefit others and their communities. “The search for the 2013 Volunteer of the Year is now on! We’re calling on the Irish public to help us shine a light on this country’s remarkable volunteers. Members of the public can nominate their choice at www.volunteer.ie. “Whether it’s helping a local sports club, raising funds for a charity or helping a local community group, we want to celebrate the selfless volunteers who regularly give their time to help to make Ireland a better place. Nominate a volunteer you know and share their inspiring story with us.” Panadol is the lead sponsor of the Volunteer Ireland Awards for the fourth consecutive year and encourages everybody to take the opportunity to showcase Ireland’s outstanding volunteers who are an essential and highly valuable

part of Irish life. Panadol tablets are made in Ireland in Dungarvan. Nominations can be received up to October 25. Category winners and an overall winner will be announced at a special Awards ceremony on December 5th. There are ten different awards categories including sports, arts, youth, environment, community, disability, education, social work, awareness raising and international development. So far this year, over 10,000 volunteers have registered through volunteer.ie and local Volunteer Centres. These volunteers have clocked up over 320,000 hours of voluntary work which has an equivalent value of over €7,000,000. Also, as part of this year's Volunteer Ireland Awards campaign, one of the shortlisted 30 nominees will receive the Charity Hero Award, a lifetime achievement award honouring a volunteer who has - over the course of their life - made an extraordinary contribution to a good cause. The Charity Hero Award is a unique collaboration between the Volunteer Ireland Awards and the Better Together Campaign. The Charity Hero Award will be presented at the Better Together Awards ceremony in Dublin on December 12th. Volunteer Ireland is the national volunteer development agency and a support body for all local Volunteer Centres in Ireland. Our vision is every person connected to and participating in their communities to build a better Irish society. Volunteer Ireland works to increase awareness of, access to and quality in volunteering in n The Search is on: Media Presenter Keelin Shanley launched the search to find Ireland’s Volunteer of the Year Ireland.
