Foster Source is a nonprofit organization offering trauma education, relief services, and therapeutic services to foster and kinship families throughout Colorado. They partner with the Colorado Department of Human Services, many of Colorado’s 64 counties, and dozens of child placement agencies, partner nonprofits, and schools.

Foster Source is proud of its evergrowing therapeutic services provided at no cost to caregivers. These services include access to virtual therapy providers as well as equine-assisted parenting workshops.

Foster Source partners with BetterHelp to provide therapeutic services to caregivers across the state. So far, 189 caregivers have been connected to therapists, with nearly 1400 sessions sponsored in 2021. Foster Source is committed to supporting and serving foster and kinship families with their increasing mental health needs. Parenting children from trauma is an emotional roller coaster. New caregivers are not prepared for the wide range of emotions they will experience. This often causes parents to quit after their first placement. When caregivers better understand and process their trauma, they can better care for children on their healing journey.

Equine-assisted workshops are provided to caregivers at no cost through Foster Source’s partnership with Groundwork Ranch. Working with horses offers an excellent opportunity for practicing parenting skills critical to developing a sense of safety and creating a healthy, healing home environment for children who have survived trauma. Parents learn and practice essential skills for managing challenging, trauma-based behaviors. These full-day workshops are changing the way caregivers are parenting children from trauma.

Up to 70% of new foster parents quit within the first 1-2 years. Foster Source is changing that. We know that when we pour services into foster parents, they foster better and longer. When this happens, children remain in stable placements and heal.

The agencies Realities For Children supports are an esteemed group of nonprofit organizations that are committed to collaboration, fiscal efficiency and to providing the best possible continuum of service for the needs of northern Colorado children.
