Many years ago, I listened to a law of attraction CD by Jerry and Esther Hicks in which an interesting concept was explained that has stayed with me ever since. Picture each of your current thoughts and emotions as if they were on a scale, with darker/troubling emotions at the bottom of the scale, and more content/peaceful thoughts ascending to the top. Then find a way to move up the emotional scale. This is best for when you’re having a difficult time feeling better and the goal is to improve the feeling— discovering thoughts that give you feelings of relief one thought at a time. For instance, if you are feeling anger, could you move up the scale to discouragement or worry? The next day, try to move from worry to disappointment or frustration, eventually arriving at optimism, which is toward the top of the scale. Otherwise you may spend an entire day or even weeks beating the drum of the emotion of where you are (negative framing), which could lead to continued anxiety. Here are some examples of how to change the framing from negative to neutral or positive: Negative Framing

I failed because I wasn’t more prepared.
Now that I know, I will be more prepared next time.
I don’t have what it takes.
This is overwhelming, but I’m going to do what I can.
Why does everything bad happen to me?
I don’t know why this happened, but I can control how I take care of myself.
Eat Right/Drink Right/Rest Right. This is really a way to neutrally frame the tragedy and give you (or in support of others) a sense of control, which is powerful when things feel out of control. Rest whenever you can and remember that you might be more tired than usual. Eat good-for-you foods (avoid the drive-thru) and eat regularly. Take time for leisure activities and find time to talk to supportive peers and/or family members about the situation. Spend time with family and
