Money Flows Across Borders The U.S.A. and the U.S. dollar have long been considered safe havens for capital from around the world, and our real estate market has been a beneficiary of that money flow. We see money fleeing political instability in its own country, or simply being invested here for a return. The strength of the U.S. dollar in international markets does have an impact on the rate at which money flows across our borders. A weak dollar tends to attract foreign investment, while a strong dollar may encourage profit-taking and repatriation of funds. Canadians represent the largest group of foreign real estate owners here in Florida. Many buy winter homes simply to escape their harsh winter months, while others purchase rental properties to diversify their investments. Between 2007 and 2010 the Canadian dollar,
CAD314,000. Comparing this to their original investment of CAD153,000 shows a capital gain of CAD161,000 or 105% - they have more than doubled their original investment! Encouraged by a strong U.S. dollar, we have seen some of our Canadian and European customers sell properties here to take the proceeds back to their home countries. Some have told us they will continue to enjoy being snowbirds here by renting winter homes until the U.S. dollar weakens when they will consider buying real estate here again. But money isn’t everything, so the saying goes. What of the owners who are attached to their winter homes and don’t wish to sell but do want to take advantage of the currency opportunity. In a recent conversation with a Vice President at The Royal Bank of Canada,
aspire to home ownership here? Does the strength of the U.S. dollar make them think twice? What can they do to overcome concerns about currency exchange rates? Traditionally, most of our foreign buyers have purchased homes with cash, but we have seen this change over the past couple of years. More of them are now purchasing with U.S. dollar mortgages as a hedge against the strength of the U.S. dollar. Consider the British buyer who has cash to purchase a Florida investment property. They can finance this purchase and exchange only 35% of the purchase price, financing the remaining 65%. U.S. dollar rental income will cover the monthly mortgage payments. When the U.S. dollar weakens and Sterling strengthens, they can exchange more money and repay
supported by a strong commodity-based economy, regularly traded at or near par with the U.S. dollar, and this encouraged record levels of Canadian investment here in Florida. The currency landscape today is much different with the Canadian dollar worth around 75 U.S. cents. Consider the case of one of our customers, a savvy Canadian, who purchased a home here in 2010. They paid $153,000 which was the equivalent of CAD153,000. They recently sold this home for $236,000 realizing a capital gain of $83,000 or 54%. When they translate this gain into Canadian dollars, $236,000 today is equivalent to
he revealed they are seeing an uptick in Canadians who are refinancing their U.S. homes to release cash to take back to Canada. When the currency has moved by as much as 33%, or they have achieved more than 100% return on their original investment, paying 5% interest on a mortgage seems a small price to pay for them to be able to enjoy the fruits of their investment. Some of the funds from these cash-out refinances are also being invested here in Florida for the purchase of rental properties. So those Europeans and Canadians who already own homes in Florida are “sitting pretty”, but what of those who
the mortgage balance if they choose. There is no doubt that the U.S. dollar’s standing in international markets influences how, and how much, money flows across our borders, and our international snowbirds and investors will continue to take this into consideration when deciding when and how to buy or sell Florida real estate.

The 1950’s Paved the Way for Future Booms Mention Florida’s Gulf Coast and one immediately conjures images of coastal themed homes, white sandy beaches, and lush, palm-infused tropical landscaping. During the past century, many events and market trends have helped shape the place we know today as Manatee County.
T
he famous Florida Land Boom of the 1920s introduced the first “skyscrapers” and transformed “Bradentown” from a small dot on the map to an emerging metropolitan city. In the 1960s, the proliferation of mobile home park communities popularized this area as an affordable designation for retirees from the north who desired an active but casual lifestyle. Beginning in the late 1980s, an influx of golf courses and upscale planned communities helped attract a more lucrative buyer to the area. Ironically, it was an all but forgotten construction boom during the 1950’s that contributed more to shape our local real estate markets than any other event. It was just after World War II and the lessons learned from our nation’s triumphant victory were fresh in the minds of our leaders who carried them forward to civilian life. Our efficiency and ability to mobilize played an important factor to our success during the war. Hence, it’s not surprising that top priority was given to our neglected infrastructure and improving connectivity between portions of our community that were detached and somewhat isolated. In just one decade six major bridges were built which drastically changed the development and transportation patterns in Manatee County forever. Three of these bridges provided new or improved access to our barrier islands, which greatly boosted this lucrative real estate market.
Looking East - Cortez Bridge Nearly Complete To The Right Is The Original Cortez Bridge Which Aligned With Bridge Street In Bradenton Beach
The most significant was the new Manatee Avenue bridge across Palma Sola Bay and Anna Maria Sound. It provided the first direct route from West Bradenton to Holmes Beach and Anna Maria. Prior to its completion in 1956, access to these island communities required motorists to travel south through Cortez and then back north through Bradenton Beach. Prior to the Manatee Avenue bridge, an old wooden bridge in Cortez provided the only access to Manatee’s beach communities. Obsolete in both design and capacity, the Cortez Bridge was replaced in 1955 and included toll gates which required motorists to pay 15 cents to cross. The Longboat Pass Bridge, although the smallest of the three island bridges, was arguably the most important. Built between 1955 and 1957, this bridge provided the first physical connection between Longboat Key and Bradenton Beach. Although the north half of Longboat Key

is in Manatee County, its only access to the rest of the county required a long drive south to the John Ringling Bridge in Sarasota and then back up the Tamiami Trail. An added benefit of this bridge was the simultaneous creation of Coquina Beach, one of Manatee County’s most popular destinations. Two new bridges involved river crossings. The old Manatee Avenue bridge across the Braden River was rebuilt and realigned to create a smoother traffic flow. The DeSoto Bridge (next to Manatee Memorial Hospital) provided an alternative route for motorists to

cross the Manatee River without traveling through downtown Bradenton and Palmetto. But the granddaddy of them all was the new Sunshine Skyway Bridge which opened in 1954 and provided the first direct road access between Manatee and Pinellas Counties. Built at a then staggering cost of $22 million, this bridge had a regional impact on the entire Gulf Coast. Prior to this bridge, motorists had two choices: Travel to Tampa and then circle back around to St Petersburg; or take the Bee Line Ferry, which ran from Piney Point (at the northern tip of Manatee County, next to the present-day Port Manatee) to Pinellas Point. The ferry, while useful because it saved motorists 49 miles, was problematic as it often required long wait times and only ran from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Skyway Bridge was quite advanced for its time. William E. Dean, FDOT’s chief bridge engineer from 1948 to 1962, gained national prominence for advocating the use of a new innovative building material, prestressed concrete, in bridge construction. Prestressed concrete allowed bridges to be built at higher elevations and span

upwards of 500 feet. Stretching approximately fifteen miles, the approach included long, filledin causeways at each end that led to a cantilevered steel truss that rose 155 feet above the bay and provided wide clearance for shipping into busy Tampa Bay ports.
span of less than 10 years and at a time when Manatee County had a population of fewer than 70,000 residents. An extraordinary accomplishment indeed!
Sixty some years later, it’s hard to imagine what Manatee County would be like without just one of these important bridges. What’s most remarkable is that all these major bridges were built in a time

SUNCOAST CHARITIES FOR CHILDREN Making A Difference Suncoast Charities for Children continues to make a unique contribution to the well-being of children, teens and adults with special needs. Each year they provide a grant to the Suncoast Foundation, thanks to fundraising events such as the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix and Thunder By The Bay. These grants have enabled the Suncoast Foundation to construct buildings in the Sarasota, Venice and North Port areas valued at over $20 Million serving over 5,000 clients annually. This equates to upward of 73,000 square feet of space occupied by Children First, The Haven, The Florida Center for Early Childhood, and Sarasota County Special Olympics for only $1 per year. Loveland Center in Venice also receives support. During the construction of these buildings many local businesses from the construction industry have donated products and services such as plumbers, roofers, electricians, and dry wallers. More recently, these annual grants help support continued maintenance on these aging facilities, so that program and service funding remains untouched and can go directly to clients.
St. Petersburg and Venice. The concept gained popularity, expanding from a single race to a week long festival now featuring a golf classic, car show, motorcycle charity ride, boat and personal watercraft fun run, three day fan festival, meet & greet reception with participating race teams, comedy night, a “Friendliest Catch” fishing day for the physically and mentally challenged, and the signature The Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix was formed by a group of local businessmen 34 years ago, primarily from the construction industry. Founders included John Stafford, Ron Foxworthy, Cal Erb and the late Hollis Tucker and Gene Whipp. The organization (then known as the Suncoast Foundation for the Handicapped, Inc.) was launched as a means of combining Whipp’s passion for powerboat racing with a desire to expand the opportunities available to help children with special needs. The group’s early endeavors included an annual beach picnic for children with special needs. As the organization grew, Whipp launched the first annual offshore powerboat race in Sarasota, with a race course that ran between 22 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com
Grand Prix Race. Both City and County Commissioners have awarded special proclamations in honor of the Festival over the years. Lucy Nicandri, Executive Director for Suncoast Charities, recently shared these comments. “Expanding the Grand Prix from a weekend race to a Festival was critical for sustainability. Change is constant and with any longstanding event you need to keep things fresh. Our goal was to not only feature a boat race but also offer a variety of events for the entire family to enjoy leading up to the race weekend. Suncoast Charities for Children has really captured the spirit of our community, creating opportunities for people with diverse interests to come together to support a great cause and also generates a huge economic impact.” As local needs have evolved, so have the efforts of Suncoast Charities. The organization has significantly increased its fundraising efforts, reaching out to the community with an array of opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others. Each year begins with the Thunder by the Bay Music and Motorcycle Festival, attracting motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world. The festival consists of a Sporting Clay Tournament, “Born to be Wild” Kickoff Party, “Cruise for Cash” ride for charity, and a three day Festival at the Sarasota Fairgrounds. The Festival is entering its 21st year and has raised over $1.8 Million for charity since inception and continues to generate a significant economic impact for the community. Thunder By The Bay and the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival are the organization’s most highprofile fundraising events, but area residents can also enjoy New Year’s Eve Bayfront Fireworks, July 4th
Bayfront Fireworks, and the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. These events are also produced by Suncoast Charities for Children and are integral to the success and sustainability of the charity. Nicandri indicates that the direct impact these events have is significant in so many ways. “We receive calls from parents of clients receiving services thanking us for our fundraising events. That means the world!! Events like the Grand Prix Festival help Sarasota County save operational and capital dollars that they would have to invest in social services, which preserves tourism marketing dollars. The City of Sarasota is also impacted. A significant portion of clients receiving services live within the City limits and fall below the state poverty level. It is a win-win situation for so many people”, said Nicandri. Please join Real Exclusive Magazine in supporting Suncoast Charities for Children and be part of a winning team.

Poonam Maini
Create Your Own Destiny
We are born into this world under our parents or guardians experiences and rules. They care, educate and provide for us the best they can with the knowledge they have earned. The world is full of traditions and rituals, commandments or lessons on the way you’re supposed to live. We may feel bound to follow the teachings of our elders, yet their guidance may not be what’s best for us. When that is the case, it takes a strong person to find their way out of the burden that was placed upon them. If you were asked the question, who do you look up to? The answer should be Poonam Maini.
T
hink back to when you were 17…… What were you family and contributed what was expected for a young doing? Getting ready to be an adult? Wanting to girl growing up in India in the 70’s. Years later that family experience more freedom and develop a career concept propelled Poonam into creating her legacy today. path? Or maybe you wanted to travel the world? Imagine that vision, that excitement, the feeling of being on top and in control of your destiny….. Imagine it now being torn from you. Your passions left unconsidered and you are given a new destiny. You can’t scream or run away. It is tradition, your culture. The turmoil that you feel is kept inside and buried for the sake of family. Poonam was able to take her negative life experiences and create out of it a fulfilling and positive future. As a young girl, family meant everything to her. She looked up to and respected her father and mother. She cared for her

After beginning her new marriage and life in India, Poonam came to find that the dream marriage was not how this love story was going. Even though young women in India at this time were raised to know that “an arrangement” could happen, many thought of it as a fairy tale, the prince on a white horse. Poonam lived with her in-laws through the first 2 years of her marriage and became the wife, daughter in law and caretaker that was expected of her even though her husband was rarely around. Lacking in commitment to the marriage tradition from the beginning, her spouse returned to the United States without her. When he was at the family home, their relationship involved abuse and was disheartening to the life she wanted to live.
The marriage could have ended within 2 months yet tradition, fear of judgement and being a role model to siblings kept Poonam from leaving. Luckily, life provides us with distractions to aid us in overcoming its struggles. With the birth of her daughter, Poonam felt a surge of hope that there may be a better future for her marriage. The year following the birth, she moved to California to be with her husband alone for the first time. A vision of a happy family floated around in her mind. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Things did go well for a while after moving to a new country. Although difficult at first, Poonam adjusted to the culture change and the family decided to move to Sarasota, Florida, a better area to raise a family than California. It was short lived though and another move was made to Orlando. During this time the family started to purchase businesses. It started with a gas station in Lakeland and developed into a small shopping center here in Sarasota. Like a lot of food service businesses, the center became a money pit. In 2001, another beautiful distraction came to support her through more difficult times. Out of gratitude for her staff, Poonam treated them to an Indian meal at a restaurant. Sadly, it was not a presentation of real Indian cooking. Many would have seen this as an occurrence noteworthy only to complain about. Yet, the world looks out for those that serve others and an idea was born. Tandoor Restaurant: Fine Indian Cuisine.
Poonam plunged into a depressed state. She had held in so much for so long. A person’s psyche can only take so much before it needs to confide in another soul. Her amazing friend and neighbor, Pauline, was able to bear the weight of her past and clear the way to an abundant life. In order to survive, Poonam needed to dedicate her life to the career that would ultimately sustain her survival and grow the philanthropic seed that was planted in her through her father. Being a single mother with no other source of financial means, bringing in the money to support your children in having wonderful life experiences can be costly to your memories. You miss many moments. Happily, wonderful moments can be made anytime. And that’s what she did. In 2011, life happened. Her father passed away. Travel plans to India were made. Back to a culture that taught her much about what destiny means. 13 days to honor a man that guided you to the person you are today almost doesn’t seem enough. Yet within that short period of time, Poonam came to learn of her true destiny. “Do what you can on a small basis with intent to go bigger by including community support”. Add people to your sphere of influence to service humanity in a bigger way. During the 13 day ceremony, 3 women approached the family home. Prior to entering, a practice akin to rituals done in a temple appeared to be performed. Mesmerized by the symbolic meaning, Poonam approached the women. What could this possibly mean? Unbeknownst to her, she was about to discover how much generosity and love one person could spread.
Having a passion for cooking from her father, Poonam instantly connected with the life of a restaurateur. Within 3 weeks Tandoor was up and running! “Do not procrastinate,” states Poonam. “My father built his wealth. He came from poverty and worked 18 hours a day to rise above.” His vacation from his nonstop life was to come and educate Poonam and her children on not making excuses and getting things done. Tandoor was built out of his dedication to helping others in the struggle of life. In 2007, the day came to take back control of her destiny. Though her years in an “arranged” life were hard, it would all be required to grow the seed she had unknowingly been embedded with. She used her resources and laid out a plan. She got out. Caring only about feelings of her children and family, she let go of the material possessions and found solace in the small family she built. This is where many feel her story begins. Where she walked away and created her destiny. Being unable to talk about the negative in life allows fear to stop you from growing. Having lived a fearful life for many years, this is where she turned the page and started a new chapter. Each chapter before has built up what is being manifested now. “On the other side of fear is success”.
Poonam’s Father, Tarsuem Lal Maini
When the women spoke it was to say, “You lost a father, we lost a God”. This was an immense connection to why she is being drawn to help others. “Servicing others is not restricted by a country, a land or city.” Giving makes her happy. In 2016, Share Care Global was created, again within
3 weeks. Again we see the passion ignite and take off. Wanting to have more fulfilment in life, increasing her ability to support not only her family, Poonam began supporting all those in need globally. Share Care Global has many future projects ahead. There are so many ways to help either in the United States and India, her native country. The more service and hope that is shared will lead the way to a more compassionate world. Tandoor restaurant began donating 10% of its proceeds. Sheena Maini, daughter, owner and Vice President has been instrumental in making all this happen. From the young age of 12, Sheena has worked hard to support her family and set in motion where Tandoor is today. It should be no surprise that she is in the process of completing her Master of Business Administration program. When you are fortunate enough to be around her, take a moment to appreciate her positive energy and passion.
Chef Sonu
Along with a donation of land from her Poonam’s brother, Achin Maini and dedication from Chef Sonu, she was able to launch her vision. The first food shelter was created on June 20, 2017. In the beginning, the food service was feeding up to 800 people a day. That is a fantastic start to a new charity start up. The food shelter is maintaining an average of 400 people served a day, 6 days a week. Wow! Last year’s “A Night in India” Gala raised money and donations to start a Woman’s Entrepreneurship. 25 sewing machines were donated by John Saputo of Gold Coast Eagle Distributing in Sarasota, Florida. This enabled the women to create clothing that would bring income as well as support the food shelter to be self sustainable.

Currently Share Care Global is procuring two ambulances for use in the community of Garhdiwala, India. Knowing that these efforts are saving lives due to lack of emergency transportation for under privilege families makes the nominal stresses of charity work fulfilling. With so many future endeavors, from supporting the medical disciplines to creating new alternatives for women and children with needs, assisting the homeless, and providing for schooling needs, Share Care Global will be a force to reckon with. If you would love to learn more about how to be a part of the change that is underway, please stop in at Tandoor and say hello! 2018 Florida Annual Senior Living Conference “The Carrots And Sticks” As a first time attendee at the Florida Senior Living Conference, I learned a great deal about the latest industry wide issues from the presentations and direct interviews with many of the presenters. Many of these experts are colleagues from the legal profession we serve as architects, engineers, and forensic design experts. These are the summary of my takeaways. THE LOOMING WORKFORCE SHORTAGE IN THE SENIOR LIVING INDUSTRY The 2018 Senior Living Conference, held from July 23rd through the 25th in Ft. Lauderdale, addressed the looming workforce shortage. The focus of the conference was on staff recruitment to the industry, proper training, and staff retention. Complicating the scarcity of available qualified staff is competition with other medical support industries. Competing for staff to manage and to provide medical support services to senior living facility residents partially derives from acute care facility employers such as hospitals, surgical centers, and even large-scale nursing home chains. Apparently, the senior housing industry has just begun to compete for recent graduates of colleges and technical schools in the nursing field. That is surprising to most people in the construction industry who have bemoaned the labor shortages and hit the recruiting path to campuses long ago.
DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN SENIOR LIVING AND ACUTE CARE CAREERS Evidently, an objective of the conference planners was to differentiate a career in senior living from those in acute care by emphasizing the compassion element. Recruits need to display a higher level of empathy in providing care for the elderly
as opposed to those in acute care. To dramatize this differentiation, two highenergy speakers from HR departments attempted to “amp up” attendees by encouraging direct positive engagement with others in the crowd. This tactic emphasized the need for those in the senior living field to “put down their phones” and interact with the residents and other staff members in order to create a more nurturing environment. They have also found recruiters need to do a better job communicating the environment that exists in a senior living center. Those coming from acute care will experience a culture shock if not thoroughly prepared for the change of pace and energy going from a hospital environment to that of senior care.
THE “CARROTS AND THE STICKS” OF SENIOR CARE The other major issues discussed revolved around regulatory code compliance. In no particular order, the following controversies and grey areas were identified: 1) How do senior homeowners transition unqualified and resistant residents out of their facility? In other words, as uncomfortable as it may sound, how does one evict the elderly? Senior Independent Living facilities are treated no differently than any other rental property. Therefore, it is legal in Florida to evict senior residents with
proper notice. The Sheriff will post a sign, lock the doors, and place the former resident’s belongings next to the nearest right of way. With assisted living, ALF’s and skilled nursing facilities the protocol takes longer. 2) The #MeToo movement has shown a bright light on liabilities that, for the most part, had previously been overlooked. When and how to report and deal with these issues are matters that can no longer be ignored. The presenter described liabilities associated with both cover-ups and overreactions to victim’s rights policy. 3) How should senior homeowners deal with building code upgrades, which will come into effect in 2019, emanating from Hurricane Irma and the inability of first responders to maintain strong wireless communication signals during a storm? The implied threat is that first responders will be forced to leave the premises prior to complete evacuation. The new code will be enacted to ensure strong uninterrupted signals for first responders in order to help facilitate the timely evacuation of residents. There were some additional overt threats that fire marshals will not issue permits for new buildings without certain transmission upgrades 4) Finally, general practitioner groups are being formed to offer cost effective primary care to senior living and ALF residents. They claim to be able to cut costs by eliminating duplicative and over the top specialized care.

Your Doctor Told You To Do Yoga - Now What? language in Hinduism, where it was used as a means of communication and dialogue by the Hindu Celestial Gods, and then by the Indo-Aryans, according to www.ancient.eu. Yoga poses can be adapted to any body with the right cues for positioning and breath. Developing a Yoga practice is about bringing together mind and body and soul as it should be. The mind and soul support the body, the body supports the mind and soul. How to Find a Yoga Therapist
Some physicians are now prescribing or suggesting yoga for all sorts of medical conditions. That’s appreciated! But now what? Do they have recommendations or will you be left on your own to find one? Most won’t really know how to explain yoga other than to have their patients go for stretching and strengthening. It’s also likely they won’t know where to send them and it’s possible they think all yoga practices are the same. How is the patient supposed to know how to safely treat their body with Yoga if they are not instructed by medical professionals? The moment someone hears the word Yoga, thoughts of twisting and bending come to mind. If you are in pain and seeking comfort, twisting and bending are not in your visions of healing. Unless you have selected the slow, restorative practice class, walking into a typical Yoga class can be putting your body at high risk for further damage. If you have never been to a Yoga class before your doctor recommended, it is in your best interest to seek out a medical professional that can provide specific guidelines for your medical need. We would recommend to everyone who enjoys yoga or wants to try Yoga for the first time to also seek out consultation from medical professionals that incorporate Yoga into their practice. It’s not all about stretching. It must be about spine and joint protection.
There are Yoga studios on every corner. It is up to you to make sure you understand the principles of moving safely and protecting your spine. Let us provide you with a valuable and educational Yoga workshop that will help you build a solid and grounded foundation for your yoga practice. We also have partners in the community that we work with who have these same core values. We can’t recommend specific studios at this time due to the high turnover and limited education the new Yoga teachers have. From Hot Yoga to Yoga Nidre, we want to teach you to be safe in any Yoga class you attend. You will learn how to protect yourself and be armed with what cues you should be following from instructors and which you should disregard. Maybe give them a card to take our workshop and get some special thank you gifts!. Want More Information? Please visit our websites and get in touch. Workshops are forming now. The Rosemary An American Bistro With A Sophisticated International Flair Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme…. You see a restaurant that is named after one of the most aromatic herbs in the world of culinary arts. You enter its enchanted portals and the perfume of garlic, butter, parley, sage, rosemary, and thyme hits your sensory faculties. You intuitively know that dinner is going to be unforgettable. And memorable it was, thanks to the wizardry of Chef Scott Harrison who prepared some of the most requested signature dishes for us at The Rosemary. Dinner started with a happy trio of appetizers. Tuna Tartar, a tower of ceviche-style yellowfin tuna mixed with crisp seasonal vegetables and herbs such as cilantro and parsley, and topped with sliced avocado. Served with a sweet Italian balsamic vinegar glaze over flatbread and garnished with edible flowers, this colorful palette of Impressionistic art was a feast for our eyes. This sushi lover loved it. Named after a city just south of Austin, Texas, the San Marcos Tostada consisted of Tex-Mex style house-smoked pulled pork, that’s lovingly slow cooked on the smoker for at least 16 hours, and served on corn tortillas with refried beans, pico de gallo, and avocado. The barbeque and habanero sauces that accompanied this appetizer were all freshly made in house. Feta cheese brought this humble comfort food up several notches. The Gulf Shrimp and ColdWater Lobster Cargot baked in Chardonnay, garlic, and
Italian parsley butter was served in traditional escargot bakeware. Garnished with charred lemon and served with some crusty bread, the intoxicating aroma and flavors had us thinking we were dining al fresco under Parisian skies. Hands down, it was everyone’s favorite appetizer. 40 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com
Chef Scott continued to impress us when we were presented with three of his most requested entrées. Here we felt the chef ’s love affair with French cuisine. The Center-Cut Beef Tenderloin topped with Béarnaise sauce and a truffle essence demi-glace was a match made in heaven. Béarnaise sauce is one of the mother sauces of French cuisine; and Chef Scott’s rendition was an alchemic combination of wine, egg yolks, butter, and vinegar flavored with tarragon and shallots, with a bite of black pepper. His creation of the red protein dish was expertly prepared, and gave the word “tender” in tenderloin a brand new meaning. The pan-roasted miso glazed Kanazawa Grouper fillet was finished with a tangy chili-lime gastrique. Miso, a fermented soy paste used in Japanese cuisine, enhanced the fish with a heady umami flavor that was truly magical. Elegantly served on top of creamy risotto, all of us at the table nodded in unanimous agreement that it was the best risotto we’ve ever tasted. A threesome of Sea Scallops atop a bed of shrimp risotto and finished with a garlic key-lime beurre blanc paid homage to Floribbean cuisine. The addition of key lime in the sauce immediately conjured up tropical images of our
greet his diners at the table and to ask if everyone is enjoying their experience at the restaurant. Shayna, our server, was delightfully attentive and answered all our questions with great enthusiasm. Chef Scott took us on a whirlwind culinary tour with his perfectly executed sauces, and his ingenious blend of herbs, spices, and fresh ingredients from regional farms. Rosemary is for remembrance so the saying goes. We had an unforgettable dinner at this quaint eatery in one of the
beautiful South West Florida beaches--a stroke of pure genius. Sweet endings arrived with the announcement of apple pie, tiramisu, and key lime pie. Mama mia! The tiramisu was one of the best desserts we’ve ever been treated to. It was playfully flavorful with an intense aroma of fresh ground coffee. Seriously, who needs cappuccino after this? The recommended wines paired perfectly with our dinner selection. Russian River Valley’s “Raeburn” a Sonoma County Chardonnay with its fresh layers of green apple and pear heightened our enjoyment of the dishes featuring the “fruits” from the sea. Broadside’s Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon with its lingering taste of ripe strawberry, red cherry, and a touch of oak took our appreciation of the beef tenderloin to a whole new different level.

I’m Colleen Quinn and I started my journey with clean hair care products over 10 years ago in my hometown of Grosse Pointe, Michigan with my own health in mind. I knew I had found my calling as a hair stylist but I didn’t want to pay the price for it later in life after a long career working with chemicals every day. I started researching alternative color and product lines that marketed themselves as clean, and effective. Most did not live up to those claims. They were missing the shine, dimension and grey coverage my clients deserved. For a color enthusiast, that was not going to cut it. Fast forward to 2015. I decided to make the move to beautiful Sarasota and start offering the same quality clean hair care services that I had provided to my clients in Grosse Pointe. I also discovered Alter Ego Italy, a product line that seemed to truly deliver on the promise of being clean and effective. After thorough research, it was clear that this was the product line I had been searching for. A line I could stand behind and offer my clients the best balance of clean products and outstanding style. In the process of researching Alter Ego I became so knowledgeable about their products and the science behind how they work that I was asked to become an educator for the line. Other lines in the past tried to entice me to sell for them yet I couldn’t work for a company whose product I didn’t believe in. Now when I’m not pampering my clients in Sarasota, I travel the country teaching other stylists how to provide all the benefits of Alter Ego to their clients. The line allows me to serve all types of clients. The color is all PPD and ammonia free. It is packed with antioxidants, keratin, Garcina Mangostana and other healthy ingredients. This is also a cationic line, it is helping
protect your hair against our harsh environment. The lightener I use for all my Florida blondes is an ECO Certified line! This is unheard of. It is packed with an Active Shine Complex and Inca oil. You will never see a dull blonde walk out of my salon. We all want to be light but if there is no shine it just doesn’t look right. This product line combined with my years of styling and hair care education experience is a recipe for beautiful, healthy Florida hair. I am excited to be REAL Magazine’s new Beauty Editor and look forward to sharing my hair care knowledge over the months to come. My Internship Experience
T
his summer, I was fortunate to join the team at Real Exclusive Magazine as an intern for the health section of the magazine. Before starting, I knew I wanted to learn how to incorporate my passion for health in the modern communication field, but lacked a feeling of direction. When I found this opportunity at the magazine I felt like I found my calling and could finally start gathering meaningful work experience that could help me choose a future career path. With this internship I was able to learn much more about health in general, as well as how to apply it in a work setting. My experience with the magazine offered me my first real taste of the work force that I could picture myself involved with in the future. I learned valuable lessons from various projects and plan on utilizing that information in my future career path. Not only did this experience allow me to learn about the company itself and how it works, but also about myself and my own work ethic. This experience allowed me to identify and explore my own individual strengths and weaknesses. I have found that my ability to write is one of my stronger assets. Throughout the internship I was constantly writing, whether it was for an article to be published in the magazine, a Facebook blog post, I found that I was excited to type up my new ideas. I have always enjoyed writing and have been confident in my ability to write, therefore I felt encouraged when I was able to showcase this skill on various platforms. Additionally, my other strengths include proper organization, time-management, creativity and being punctual. However, this experience has also allowed me to notice some weaknesses within myself and to incorporate a plan of action to correct them. Multiple times I was given the
opportunity to publicly speak about various health topics I have an interest in, and had further researched specifically for the internship. I felt a lot of nervous energy building up inside me before I spoke and I feared my audience would be able to notice that. With more practice in front of audiences I am not familiar with, I will become more confident in performing this task, especially as it is required in almost every job field. Another weakness I noticed, and corrected, was that I put up a blockade around myself which inhibited my initiative. Instead of testing out my own ideas and being more creative with accomplishing tasks, I would wait for the green light which I thought I needed to do, but in retrospect I realize I should have been more confident in my work to try out new ideas without always being supervised. This was a learning experience for me as now I will be more eager to take initiative with future jobs and tasks. In my career, I will use the skills I learned such as organization, working in teams, time management, general marketing, how to hone in on a target audience, what motivates people to interact with social medias and how to effectively use general marketing platforms. This experience has helped me to solidify my career focus. I really enjoyed working within the realm of health. I gained knowledge regarding different aspects of the health, such as the lymphatic system, yoga, chakras, and how to use your surrounding environment to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We explored different health and fitness trends while simultaneously learning about different systems of the body from one-on-one interactions and research materials. Giving back to the community was 50% of the intern experience. To

make a real, lasting difference and strengthen our community, REAL Magazine supports local needs. I enjoyed working at the community level and found this to be extremely rewarding. We saw people taking an interest in our work and applying it to their personal lives and daily routines. Creating the partnership with All Faiths Food Bank was another learning experience that proved to be a good networking opportunity. The feeling of making a difference within my own community was insurmountable and I hope that I can continue doing so after graduation. Before finding the internship, I was not sure if I would be able to apply my passion for health in an industry other than healthcare, but this experience clearly demonstrated to me that I could and I look forward to discovering more about the field as I join the workforce. Finishing my internship is bittersweet, but I look forward to getting back to Rollins for my last semester to finalize my education. I tried to absorb as much useful information as I possibly could to incorporate into my work ethic at Rollins, as well as in the work field. Any work experience can be viewed as a learning experience from various aspects, and I believe my internship was a complete learning experience for me from the start to the end. Throughout the entire time, I was exposed to new educational materials, marketing resources and networking opportunities that I will continue to maintain as I look for full-time work in the near future. I am excited to explore different work possibilities and eager to find out what the future holds for me. Crystal DaCorta Intern REAL Exclusive Magazine cdacorta@rollins.edu

Fall Inspired
A
s a Worth New York Stylist and the Founder of We’ve Got Style I am often asked about seasonal looks & trends.
This season I am excited to bring to Sarasota the Worth New York Fall Collection, inspired by travel, prep schools, and soft textures. Worth New York channeled Amelia Earhart’s military vibe to take a worldly trip, borrowed rep stripes from the boys, and knitted the softest cables in this collection. What happens when strong meets gentle? When tailored modernity mixes with soft & pretty, and Tea Rose bumps up against Navy and Moss? When structure plays
with flow, and throughout there’s an homage to the power and the pleasure of pearls? It becomes magic with Worth’s Pearls of Wisdom collection. With graphic patterns − think colorblocks or pattern & solid mixes - and simple shapes, it’s not surprising that this nod to the 70s looks very “2018”, Neutrals like Camel and Black are popped with Stone Blue, Rust and Butterscotch. Then black show up on its own in the sexiest pieces with the New Wave collection. The richer (in color, mix and texture) the better this fall. Classic tartan plaids mix with tigers, cheetahs and leopards. The shapes stay classic - to let us go a little wild with the mixing of colors and pattern. Merlot and Chocolate Chip get a jolt of Simply Red with this Scotch & Skin collection. Check out this beautiful collection & book your private styling appointment for the upcoming Trunk Show at www. worthnewyork.com/becca-towery. Becca Z. Towery
