THE GREAT ARCHITECT LOUIS KAHN

said, “Even a brick wants to be something.” Artists have a unique talent for taking something, making it better, and maybe most importantly, worth remembering. I try to bring a similar approach when I channel my artistry into creating hair inspirations. What else can it do, and where can I go with it? One important factor I always account for is the physical location where I am working. Inspiration can come in many forms, and I like to see where I will be creating for a wedding, special event, or even a fashion shoot.

The Kings’ Hill Inn fashion shoot (see page 72) happened to be a private estate in the middle of the woods. I found it to be an ethereal and magical space. If you look carefully, you may even spot a wood nymph roaming in the forest. Although the sights and sounds of Mother Nature, the twisted and tangled structures of tree branches, the vibrant colors of a bird, or even the song it shares are factors that perhaps some take for granted, I was able to use those to my advantage and for my inspiration.

I’m also very fortunate to work with outstanding dress providers. The designs, the creativity, the beauty that have come in all shapes and sizes add to my inspiration. The same can be said about the talented and creative florists who allow me the flexibility to complement and create looks that flatter the dresses and our models and brides. Each model has her own vibe, and they are all superaccommodating with my various visions.

When working with brides, the most important thing for me to remember is that it is a collaboration. I’m here to help them achieve their vision. It is their wedding, and it is my job to give them a memorable creative experience on the most important day of their life. This day will live on in pictures, anniversaries, and memories. A tremendous amount of time, energy, and money has been invested into various aspects of this special day. My job is to help give them options and explore the possibilities of where we could take things — something that compliments their face and may even accentuate the dress. The process feels deeply personal to me and I take so much pride in my work that I think of my clients as my brides, and I want them to love how they look all day! Not only so they can wear the style that flatters them most, but so that it will also be realistic as well as beautiful.
