As the spring makes its debut in Ontario, many Canadians eagerly await the first weekend of sunshine. The time has come to shake off the snow, trade those winter boots for flip flops, and switch out those winter clothes for some summer clothes. For many Canadians, especially those in Ontario, this does not necessarily mean just enjoying the warm sun. This means one thing – cottage life. It means packing up the car with a weekend’s worth of food and beer, picking up friends and family on your way out of town, and taking part in one of the most prized traditions Ontario has ever known. Martini glasses have now become Mason jars, briefcases have become beach towels, and the fast-paced lifestyle has now become easy and breezy. When it comes to the finer things in life, all roads lead to cottage country, and there is no doubt that cottage country in Canada is the destination du jour. And for a pretty penny, you can rent a piece of paradise in the lap of lakeside luxury. Most of Toronto escapes because the summer heat is intense – eye ball sweating kind of intense. So with every summer long weekend, people flock away and most of the time you can tell just by the traffic. The highway blitz on Highway 400 and Highway 11 is referred to as “Cottage Country traffic,” and it usually starts Friday afternoon and returns on Sunday afternoon, it is also usually more heavy on the longer weekends, like Victoria Day in May, Canada Day on the July 1st weekend, Civic Holiday in August, and Labour Day in September. The sweet scent of pine forests, the crystal clear waters, and clear blue skies are all part of what makes this place so unique and memorable. Here you can truly enjoy time with your family, unwind, relax, and simply get away from it all. Of course, if you are looking to do something more than just relaxing, there is a plethora of activities to keep you entertained all summer long. From water activities like canoeing, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing to hiking, biking, sightseeing, and late night bonfires, Cottage Country has it all.

With over 250,000 lakes, small islands, an abundance of pristine shoreline, an array of comfortable, private, lakeside homes – a Cottage Country holiday or getaway is a truly wonderful experience for the entire family. With over 250,000 lakes to choose from, where should you explore first? From the posh cottages, to upscale shops, world-class eateries, peaceful camping, and the plethora of outdoor activities, here is our list of must-sees!

G E OR G I A N B AY I S L A N D S Often referred to as the sixth Great Lake, Georgian Bay features more than 30,000 islands and 2,000 kilometers of shoreline. Discover the rich marine heritage and lighthouses that dot the coastline, relax on a beach, explore the great outdoors or cruise the best roads on your motorcycle. Travelling to and from the different islands by boat can be an invigorating for experienced kayakers who are up to the task—or a more leisurely affair for people who prefer to motor over. There are tons of secluded beaches for swimmers and sunbathers to choose from and fishing enthusiasts can catch a wide variety of dinner options. June through August is the busiest tourist season. The park nurtures over 360 species of migrating birds, a mecca for avid birdwatchers. Spring is the peak time for bird migration, specifically in May when tired migrants make first landfall after their journey north across the lake. Several tourists flock to the area and stay in the nearby town of Leamington. The summers are warm and humid with the hottest months in July and August, but the lakes help to moderate the hot temperatures The beach at Point Pelee is another high point, it’s shape constantly shifting with heavy winds and storms – sometimes flat and wide, other times and steep and narrow.
S A NDB A NK S P R OV I NC I A L PA RK Located along the north shore of Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County, Sandbanks Provincial Park is an unforgettable experience. It boasts two of the world’s largest fresh water bay-mouth sandbars and is home to not one, but three, gorgeous beaches. There are options for every type of vacationer. Outlet Beach has warm shallow water that’s perfect for swimmers and families. Dunes Beach had a steep drop-off that appeals to boaters and wind-surfers. And Sandbanks Beach offers a more isolated, less touristy experience for sun-bathers who prefer peace and quiet. Hikers can also stroll along the Cedar Sands Trail to experience the unique ecology of a dune forest.
SAUBLE BEACH For anyone looking for a relaxing beach experience in a gorgeous locale, Sauble Beach in Bruce Country is the place to go. Stretching 10 kilometers long, it’s the second longest freshwater beach in the world and considered by many to be the nicest beach in Ontario, and one of the very few beaches where you can drive your car and park on the sand near the water. Situated on Lake Huron, Sauble is blessed with crystal-clear water and wonderfully soft white sand. A phenomenal sandbar deposit along the shoreline keeps the water very shallow and warm. In the summer, visitor counts soar over 30,000 on hot weekends and up to 60,000 on a long weekend. There is also weekly Family Movie Nights, an annual

LAKE RO SSEA U Located about 200 kilometers north of Toronto, Lake Rosseau is surrounded by many cottages, some even dating back to the late 19th century. Part of the Muskoka Lakes, it is one of Ontario’s most desirable cottage locales – and most expensive. Jump in the crystal clear Lake Rosseau from floating docks or enjoy the paddle boat or relax on the long pathway of docks. Each cottage is spacious and defines luxury and living the cottage life. The village of Rosseau located at the northern tip is charming and location of one of the original Ontario summer resorts which brought exposure to the area and its beauty. Lake Rosseau is also home to Windermere House, a popular vacation resort, where many celebrities have found refuge, including Goldie Hawn, Martin Short, and past president Woodrow Wilson.
AR R O WHEAD PRO V IN CIA L PA RK Nestled in the heart of the Muskokas, Ontario’s hugely popular cottaging region was named one as one of the world’s must-see places by National Geographic. The two lakes of Mayflower and Arrowhead are protected from harsh winds by the surrounding forests, making them an ideal spot for kayakers and canoers. Arrowhead Provincial Park is an oasis of quiet tranquility; in order to ensure the peace and tranquility people find here, all water is motorboat-free. Hikers can enjoy 15 kilometers of footpaths and can view the historic remains of 1870s homesteads along the trail. There are three sand beaches on Arrowhead to enjoy, visitors can also rent canoes, kayaks, and mountain bikes. And if you enjoy it here in the summer, make sure to come back to visit in the winter.

In the heart of the Peach State is a hidden jewel built on Southern charm and deeply rooted traditions. Far from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta lies a small lakeside community, where the peace and quiet definitely outweighs the hype of city life. The most northeastern county, Rabun, is where many have found the solitude they seek. Some visit for long spring and summer weekends and others make it their second home. Framed by the stunning Great Smokey Mountains, and three lakes; Lake Burton, Lake Rabun, and Lake Seed, Rabun County offers charming villages and miles of hiking trails that lead to the top of the world, there’s a little bit of everything just a short drive away from Atlanta. The lakes were originally created in the early 1900s by Georgia Power for hydroelectric power generation, but today they are the focal point for recreation and beating the heat. The largest of the lakes, Lake Burton, covers 4.33 square miles and has 62 miles of shoreline. Lake Rabun covers 840 acres and has 25 miles of shoreline and Lake Seed covers 240 acres and has 13 miles of shoreline. The county also boasts a large number of trout streams, including the Tallulah River and its tributaries, Coleman River, and Charlies Creek. Rabun County is the only county in Georgia where three state parks collide: Black Rock Mountain, Moccasin Creek, and Tallulah Gorge. The Eastern Continental Divide and part of the Appalachian Trail runs through the county, from southwest to northeast. The eastern border with South Carolina is formed by the Chattooga River, the largest tributary of the Tugaloo River. The high elevation along the divide gives Rabun County the most snow of any in county in Georgia during the winter, but also gives it mild weather throughout the warmer months of the year, leading to the county’s slogan, “Where Spring Spends the Summer.”
DI L L A R D Less than 100 miles from Atlanta, and one of the most northern towns in Rabun, Dillard makes escaping the ordinary extraordinary. As the gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains, outdoor adventure abounds with white water rafting, horseback riding, and zip lining.

The town was incorporated in 1904, and the most prominent attractions include the Tiger Drive In, Tiger Mountain Vineyards, and Stone Creek Vineyards. LAKE RABUN Lake Rabun is a twisty 835 acre reservoir with 25 miles of shoreline located in the Northeastern corner of Georgia in Rabun County. It is the third lake in a six-lake series that follows the original course of the Tallulah River. Lake Rabun was built in a deep valley located along a 10-mile section of the Tallulah River. Owned and operated by the Georgia Power Company to generate hydroelectric energy for Atlanta, at one time these lakes were the largest producers of electricity in the state of Georgia, now they only provide peak power supply. When you come to the lakes to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, you will find a peace that is unmatched. Generations can come to reconnect and relax, kids can play and be safe in the small town atmosphere, and visitors can find a whole new world. With a mix between play and relaxation there is always something for someone. As with most lake communities, one of the biggest holidays at Lake Rabun is Fourth of July. The celebration is huge and the residents here definitely go all out. The celebration is sponsored and coordinated by the Lake Rabun Association (LRA). Each year there is a wooden boat parade that follows the shore lines of the lake, and prizes are given to the most decorated boat and boat house. Another tradition is the Rabun Ramble Road
Chophouse at La Prade’s
Race, a 5K and 10K, that winds along the shores of the north side of the lake. The race is a marathon qualifier attracting both serious runners and families alike with over 800 participants each year. It is a fundraising event that provides funds for the Lake Rabun Foundation, which gives back to the local community. In the evening a spectacular fireworks display is given directly on the lake. Spectators watch the display from the hundreds of boats crowded along the lower basin of the lake. Due to the large growth of Atlanta in recent years, like Lake Burton, Lake Rabun has become a second home to some of the most wealthy and politically connected individuals in the state of Georgia. Although Lake Rabun has experienced a huge housing boom due to leased lots by the Georgia Power Company, most home owners are summer weekend

residents. Due to the small size of the lake and strong home owners association, and powerful board members, the lake has resisted many attempts to further commercialize and potentially lose its quaint appeal.
LAK E SEED Lake Seed, also known as Seed Lake, is a 240-acre reservoir with 13 miles of shoreline and is the smallest of the three major lakes. Formed in 1927 with the completion of the Nacoochee Dam, Lake Seed is also operated for hydropower by Georgia Power Company. Fishing on Lake Seed is the most popular pastime. Walleye and trout are the featured species, but spotted bass, yellow perch, white catfish, and trophy redear sunfish also take up residence under the water. Cool water fish, like trout and walleye, will often be found within a few feet of the bottom all year long. Trout will feed on the surface under low light conditions in the cool weather months and walleye will move also move into shallow water under the same conditions. Whether you are a permanent resident or looking to explore what the lakes of Rabun County have to offer, it is safe to say you can find it here. The breathtaking estates nestled right at the water’s edge, the small town America feel, the abundant activities for all ages to partake and enjoy, all lie just outside Atlanta’s busy city limits. The serenity and beauty found in this mountainous lake land is just like the water – calm and clear on the surface offering nothing more than what you see, but if you look closer, the opportunity for a different type of life, even if for a moment, is just a reach below the surface.
