WELCOME TO NEW J E RS E Y More than just picturesque gardens, lakes, and parks; iconic landmarks; and an unsurpassed nightlife on the beach, New Jersey’s homes define the word luxury.

A CITY OF GARDENS Known as the Garden State, New Jersey offers some of the most incredible gardens in the world. From the north to the south, big ones and small ones, the gardens here are blossoming with plants, flowers, and gathering vines from all over the world. Even though New Jersey is the fourth smallest state, it offers over 60 gardens to visit and enjoy year-round. Just like flowers, each garden is unique and has its own story to tell. The 54 acres of gardens and greenhouses at Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown were planned as a living catalog of cultivated and native plants to be observed through the seasons. Herrontown Woods was gifted by internationally-renowned mathematician Professor Oswald Veblen and was Princeton’s first nature preserve; the land has been preserved in its natural state and includes a pine forest, wetlands, over 30 species of trees, shrubs, and flowers. Branch Brook Park (pictured on the left) is the largest public park in the city of Newark and is noted for having the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the U.S., with over 4,300 trees and more than 14 different varieties. The park is also well know for its spectacular Cherry Blossom Festival every year in April. Leaming’s Run Gardens is 30 acres of gardens with over 13 different flowering gardens, including a Reflection Garden, Shades of Roses Garden, and several others, and claims to be the largest flower garden in the United States. Leaming’s Run also hosts a haunted walk-through during Halloween that is said to be “out of this world” creepy. Sayen Park Botanical Garden (pictured on the right) began when Frederick Sayen and his wife Anne Mellon purchased the site in 1912 and began filling the garden with plants and flowers acquired on their world travels. The collections include species from China, Japan, and England. Sayen opened to the public in 1991. Today the garden contains more than 1,000 azaleas, nearly 500 rhododendrons, and more than 250,000 flowering bulbs, as well as ponds, bridges, gazebos, and walking trails. More than just gardens, New Jersey is home to more than 9,071 farms covering more than 715,057 acres. While most people associate agriculture with our nation’s heartland, the state ranks high in the production of almost all garden vegetables, ranking third in cranberry, spinach, and bell pepper production, fourth in peach production, and fifth in blueberry production, as well as producing an abundance of tomatoes, corn, apples, strawberries, potatoes, hay, soybeans, and nursery stock.

INDUSTRY Ranked 47th in size, with an area of 8,729 square miles, New Jersey’s population of over 8.8 million people makes it the 11th most populous state in the U.S., with an average of 1,030 residents per square mile. It also leads the country in population density. One of the benefits of population density is diversity. Foreign-born individuals account for 21% of the population. The best known and largest immigrant group in New Jersey is Italian-Americans, who make up over 13% of the population. Although small and heavily populated, New Jersey offers a robust economy. Its advantageous position in the center of the Boston–New York–Washington corridor puts it in close striking distance to major cities, including Philadelphia and Baltimore. This favored location facilitated its rapid growth through the boom of the 1950s and affords New Jersey a large and well-educated labor pool. Today 35% of state residents are college graduates, putting the state in the top five for undergraduate degrees nationwide. With its proximity to the metropolitan corridor, most residents commute to work; but commuting does have a price: nearly 15% of New Jersey workers have an average commute of 60 minutes or more and over 500,000 people leave the state to work every weekday. Today, New Jersey offers a wide variety of industrial diversification and is known as the Crossroads of the East. Products from over 20,000 manufacturers can be delivered overnight to 100 million people. New Jersey is also one of the foremost research centers in the world, with its greatest industry being chemicals. It is home to numerous chemical plants and pharmaceutical firms, including Merck, Wyeth, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, and Pfizer. Significantly, the largest petroleum containment system outside of the Middle East is located in New Jersey. In the wider business arena, 19 companies on the Fortune 500 list have headquarters in New Jersey. They include Prudential Financial, Honeywell International, Toys R Us, Campbell Soup, and Quest Diagnostics. Other important manufactured items include instruments, machinery, electrical goods, and apparel. New Jersey may be known as the Garden State, but ironically it is the most urbanized state in the U.S. Approximately 90% of residents live in an urban area, and every New Jersey county is dense enough to be classified as a metropolitan area. New Jersey is divided into five regions based on natural geography and population. Northeastern New Jersey, the Gateway Region, lies closest to Manhattan in New York City, and up to a million residents commute daily into the city to work via automobile or mass transit. Northwestern New Jersey, or the “Skylands,” is compared to the northeast, being more wooded, rural, and mountainous. The “Shore,” along the Atlantic Coast in the central-east and southeast, has its own natural, residential, and

Homes in the New Vernon section of Harding in Morris County went on the market for a median price of $2,086,076.92. Short Hills was also ranked by Forbes as the most affluent neighborhood. THE JERSEY SHORE Forget what you have seen on TV or in the headlines, the Jersey Shore is much more and offers life on the east coast beyond the city. The Shore brings you to a time where fun in the sun was more than just a saying — it’s a way of life. The endless boardwalks along the coasts are filled with so many sights and sounds that can overwhelm the senses. The bright neon lights from the tourist shops and rides, the sounds from the arcade games mixed with children laughing, and the smell of food from every corner combined with the sea breeze, all come together to create an environment that must be experienced at least once in a person’s lifetime. The New Jersey economy has benefited greatly from its 127 miles of coastline filled with numerous seaside resorts and beaches, from Sandy Hook to Cape May. Some favorites spots to enjoy include the family-friendly Ocean City; the reborn Atlantic City, with its casinos, amusement pier and longest boardwalk in the world at 5.75 miles; and Cape May, the oldest coastal resort in the U.S., which is home to charming Victorian gingerbread houses, the Cape May Bird Observatory and the annual World Series of Birding. In 2012, the Shore was devastated by Hurricane Sandy — 346,000 homes were damaged and 37 people were killed. The effects according to Governor Chris Christie were “incalculable.” Three years later, the residents of the Shore have begun to rebuild. Amidst the devastation, the storm did teach the state a valuable lesson — the shore needs to be better protected. Some of the changes enacted by FEMA after Hurricane Sandy will help protect the shore from future storms. Starting with elevating homes that needed to be rebuilt, instead of relying on reverse 911, many towns have joined the Nixle system, which sends emergency alerts as texts or emails to those who sign up for the free service, reinforced seawalls, hurricane resistant boardwalks, and in Bayshore, federal funding was given to construct levees, berms, floodwalls, and gates to prevent future flooding. Despite the recent hardships, the spirit of the Shore is still alive and can be seen everywhere you look. Visitors and residents can still enjoy the numerous walking, running, and biking trails along the water, beach camping for the family, some of the best fishing on the east coast, the finest golf courses in Monmouth and Ocean County, fine dining up and down the shore, a nightlife only the Jersey Shore can provide, and hotels with that perfect Jersey touch. Each town along the coast has something different to offer. Whether you are a family vacationing with your children, a spring breaker looking to forget about the responsibilities of college if only for a week, or just looking for a peaceful getaway, there is a place for you on the Jersey Shore. W E L C O M E TO BRITISH COLUMBIA Where the mountains touch the sea, and the glaciers feed the forest. This mysterious and vast land is alive and thriving and the people here are just as diverse as the geography.
W E L C O M E TO B R I T I S H C O L U M B I A With mountain ranges pushing west, the Rockies rise along to meet the Pacific before crashing into the ocean. Thousand-year-old trees divide the landscape to fill the land with a green forest floor and glacier-fed streams pour through the steep valleys to join the weaving rivers. It’s an untamed land where Mother Nature creates the boundaries, not man. And while she demands respect, her handiwork offers massive rewards for those wild enough to experience it. The abundant and nurturing landscape has sustained for over 10,000 years and the cities have grown on the edge of the wilderness. The people are here because they yearn to live within arm’s reach of nature’s richness, to ski world-renowned resorts, to surf Pacific swells, to swim in clear mountain lakes, to hike to a glacier, and to be transported to a place that only British Columbia can take you.

H I S TO R Y & D I V E R S I T Y British Columbia (BC) is the westernmost province of Canada, with a population of more than four million people; it is nestled perfectly between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. The first British settlement, established in 1843, was Fort Victoria, which later became Victoria, the capital of BC. Richard Clement Moody, who founded the Colony of British Columbia, was handpicked by the Colonial Office in London to transform British Columbia into the “second England on the shores of the Pacific.” Moody selected Vancouver Island and founded the original capital of BC, New Westminster, and designed the first coat of arms. For his efforts, Port Moody was named after him. In 1866, Vancouver Island became a part of the colony, and Victoria was named the colony’s capital. By 1871, British Columbia had become the sixth province of Canada. Its Latin motto is Splendor sine occasu (“Splendour without Diminishment”). To this day, Victoria remains the capital and is the 15th largest metropolitan region in Canada; Vancouver is the third-largest metropolitan area and the largest in Western Canada. BC’s economy is as diverse as its topography, with service industries accounting for the largest portion of the province’s GDP. It is the endpoint of the transcontinental railways, and the site of major Pacific ports that enable international trade. Though less than 5% of its land is arable, the province is agriculturally rich (particularly in the Fraser and Okanagan Valleys). Vancouver also serves as the headquarters of many western-based natural resource companies. It also benefits from a strong housing market and a per capita income well above the national average. The weather can be milder near the coast and in certain sheltered southern valleys; the climate encourages outdoor recreation and tourism, though BC’s economic mainstay has long been resource extraction, principally logging, farming, and mining. While the coast of British Columbia and certain valleys in the south-central part of the province have mild weather, the majority of its land mass experiences a cold-winter-temperate climate similar to that of the rest of Canada. The Northern Interior region has a subarctic climate with very cold winters. The climate of Vancouver is by far the mildest winter climate of the major Canadian cities, with colder nighttime winter temperatures averaging above the freezing point. A majority (over 50%) of the population claim their ethnic origin as being from one of the main British nations (England, Scotland, or Wales). However, of the provinces, BC has the highest proportion of minorities, representing over 20% of its population. Asians by far are the largest visible minority demographic, with many of the Lower Mainland’s large cities having sizeable Chinese, Southeast Asian, Japanese, Filipino, and Korean communities. Also present in large numbers are many European ethnicities of the first and second generation, notably Germans, Scandinavians, Yugoslavs, and Italians. Third-generation Europeans are generally of mixed lineage, and traditionally intermarried with other European groups more than in any other Canadian province.

WHISTLER Whistler Blackcomb is consistently named North America’s #1 resort, and it’s not hard to understand why. Skiers and snowboarders can explore more terrain here than anywhere else on the continent, with the summits of two legendary mountains – Whistler and Blackcomb. In summer, the pedestrian village is alive with hikers, mountain bikers, golfers, and people watchers. Even the drive will make your heart skip a beat: access from Vancouver is via the Sea-to-Sky Highway, which follows a stunning coastline for much of its length.
