s the winter season draws closer, now is the time to start planning that much needed luxury ski vacation or to find that second home you have always wanted to spend your winter vacations in. As the weather begins to get colder and snow begins to fall in the higher altitudes, the United States offers a plethora of luxury areas— some of which you might find very surprising—where you can hit the slopes, enjoy fine dining, and relax with luxury amenities that only these top resorts can offer. With breathtaking mountain ranges on the West Coast like the Sierra Nevadas and the Rocky Mountains, there is no shortage of luxury resorts. From California to Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Utah, now the decision is where to go.

CALIFORNIA More than just beaches and palm trees, the state of California is topographically vast and winter gives “California Dreaming” a whole new meaning.

LAKE TAHOE | Located in the Sierra Nevadas, the blue waters of Lake Tahoe straddle the border of California and Nevada. At its surface elevation of 6,225 feet, it is the largest alpine lake in North America. Some of the major ski areas include Heavenly, Squaw Valley, and Northstar. The landscape is breathtaking throughout the year, offering winter and summer attractions to visitors from all over the world. By 1969, it was the most popular ski resort in the state and in 1988 it opened China Bowl, making it the largest ski area in North America. TELLURIDE | Often compared to Aspen, Telluride prides itself by offering all the lux without the heirs. According to the locals the difference is the attitude. Telluride has gained a reputation for being “Colorado’s best-kept secret.” In 2007 and 2008, the ski area opened some of the most extreme, in-bound, hike-to terrain in the country. As you move from the base of the mountain toward Mountain Village, the homes are still super luxurious, but the condos and apartments become more affordable.

IDAHO More than just a state of potatoes, Idaho’s Ketchum Valley offers breathtaking views and an unbelievable skiing destination in Sun Valley.

SUN VALLEY | In 1935, Count Felix Schaffgotsch was commissioned by the Union Pacific Railroad to search for the most perfect North American ski destination. After months of exploring, the Count came upon Ketchum Valley and was overwhelmed. After just seven months of construction, Sun Valley opened to the public in the winter of 1936. Bald Mountain, or “Baldy,” has a summit of 9,150 feet and a vertical drop of 3,400 feet. With its abundance of constant-pitch terrain, at varying degrees of difficulty, coupled with its substantial vertical drop and absence of wind, Baldy has often been referred to as one of the best ski mountains in the world. www.sunvalley.com

MONTANA Not typically thought of as the destination for a luxury vacation, Montana just might surprise you. Away from it all, Montana’s luxury resorts cater to those with discerning tastes.

UTAH In the beautiful Beehive state, visitors can experience some of the most awe-inspiring landscape in the United States. Bisected by the Rocky Mountains, Utah offers luxury ski locales to spend your time. There are two distinct ski resorts: Park City and Deer Valley, just outside of Salt Lake City. Both were major locations at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Although they receive less snow and have a shorter ski season than their counterparts, they are much easier to access.

BIG SKY MONTANA | Located just 15 miles from the northwestern border of PARK CITY | On average the tourist population in Park City greatly exceeds the Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky is the main ski resort in Montana. Originally two large ski resorts, Big Sky Resort and Moonlight Basin, the two merged in October 2013, and has since become the “Biggest Skiing in America.” The area of Big Sky is broken up into three sections: The Meadow, the Mountain, and the Canyon. Those in search of a little more elbow room will find larger 20-acre parcels that offer up a more intimate and private setting on which to build a custom residence.

Known for top-notch amenities and world-class skiing, Park City and the more exclusive Deer Valley continually win over buyers. Because of their close proximity, the area is separated in four distinct areas: Lower Deer Valley, Upper Deer Valley, Deer Crest, and Empire Pass. All of these areas are suitable to purchase a single family home or condominium and each have their benefits and drawbacks. Since you can reach the ski resort within 40 minutes from the Salt Lake City International Airport, this is a huge benefit to owning property within these areas.

YELLOWSTONE CLUB & SPANISH PEAKS | You may not have heard of these resorts before, and that’s how it should be. These resorts pride themselves on offering privacy and peace. DEER VALLEY | Deer Valley Resort is known for its upscale amenities, is consistently ranked among the top ski resorts in North America, and is popular for its freestyle moguls, aerial, and alpine slalom ski areas. With a number of other large ski resorts nearby, Deer Valley competes by catering to a more upscale audience than its neighbors, offering amenities such as free ski valets, free parking shuttles, fine dining, boutique shopping in the

main lodge, and avoids overcrowding by limiting the ticket sales per day. It was also one of the first resorts to offer ski valets, free parking lot shuttles, a state-licensed child care facility, uniforms on all its employees, refer to customers as “guests,” provide complimentary overnight ski check services, and even has tissues in the lift lines. www.deervalley.com

WYOMING Usually regarded as a state with very few tourist attractions, Wyoming is home to one of the most luxurious ski resorts in the western United States, Jackson Hole.

JACKSON HOLE | In the valley between the Teton Mountain Range and the Gros Ventre Range, Teton Village is located just 12 miles northwest of Jackson and a 40-minute drive from Jackson Airport. With its peak season from November through April, guests can enjoy access to two mountains, Apres Vous and Rendezvous, 2,500 acres of rugged in-bound terrain, and 133 named runs with a mix between expert, intermediate, and beginner. Jackson Hole is home to many of the world’s best free skiers as the terrain is considered to be some of the most challenging in North America. With even larger areas to explore, only the most expert of skiers who are avalanche prepared can access these areas by marked gates. Jackson Hole is also home to “America’s scariest slope”— Corbet’s Couloir. About ten feet wide at the entrance with rock faces on three sides, it opens up quickly. Entrance into the couloir requires dropping off a cornice with a free fall ranging from 10 to 20 feet. Visitors can travel around the resort and ski slopes via several avenues, including in the 100-passenger aerial tram and an eight-passenger high-speed gondola. And if you enjoy snowboarding, there is a half pipe and two terrain parks. If the slower place is what interests you, Jackson Hole offers some of the best wildlife viewing. www.jacksonhole.com

Rugged Grand Teton

Real estate here ranges from $1,500,000 to $2,500,000, with a majority of these homes averaging 3,317 square feet, on lots from 0.15 to 9.68 acres, and one to five bedrooms. You can find luxury homes in a resort setting to equestrian-oriented properties that are frequently located farther from the resort.

Although the East Coast may not hold a candle to the west in terms of its notoriety with luxury ski resorts, it’s important to not discount it. New England is all about charming ski towns and classic skiing. Real estate prices around ski resorts are much more reasonable here than its counterparts to the west. And you can be sure to find luxury homes near the base of the mountain, even though prices may fluctuate based on location. But if you are looking for a second home and the east coast is more suited to your taste, chances are very good you will be able to find what you are looking for.

VERMONT Looking for some of the best skiing on the east coast? Look no further than Vermont. From luxury resorts to classic ski towns and heart-racing runs, the Green Mountain state definitely lives up to its name.

KILLINGTON | Nicknamed The Beast of the East, Killington is the biggest ski resort in New England with six peaks, lots of lifts, several trails, parks, and extensive lodging plus a very lively après-ski. Killington offers a long ski season from October to May with mixed terrain for every ability—the mountain is split almost evenly between greens, blues, and blacks. Skiers can also enjoy an array of moguls and steep groomers dropping from Killington Peak and Bear Mountain. The Stash, a terrain park with more than 50 features and a 500-foot Super Pipe with 18-foot walls, is where snow boarders and free skiers get their heart pumping. There’s a lot to do off-mountain, too, from tubing to snowmobile tours. This is what East Coast skiing is all about. www.killington.com

OKEMO | Okemo makes the list for its quality skiing, with great lifts (high-speed lifts with two heated leather seats and bubble cover), amazing snow grooming, and lovely views of the Vermont river valley. What sets Okemo apart is the friendly service and the best mountain cuisine in New England. Sushi at the summit, wood-fired flat bread pizza at the Round House, signature martinis and a Wine Spectator list at Coleman Brook Tavern. www.okemo.com

STOWE | Dubbed the ski capital of the east, Stowe offers some of the best

LOON | Loon is New Hampshire’s most extensive ski resort with three separate

skiing amid a European-style village and eclectic international crowd. Most of the trails cater to intermediate and advanced skiers with some of the country’s gnarliest skiing with the legendary “Front Four”—National, Nosedive, the Goat, and Star. STRATTON | Stratton Mountain stands within the watershed of the Connecticut River. The mountain has two peaks, of which the southern is the highest at 3,940 feet. The mountain ridge descends northward to a saddle at 3,830 feet, before rising to the north peak at 3,875 feet. The south summit is wooded, except for the small clearing housing the tower and caretaker’s cabin. The tower was built around 1934 by a crew of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the state’s last surviving towers. Stratton offers posh lifts, a gondola, and six-passenger chairs. Stratton also has valet parking, a nice Intrawest base village with a new lodge, and great customer service. www.stratton.com

NEW HAMPSHIRE New Hampshire has declared skiing as their official winter sport.

BRETTON WOODS | With the largest mountain on the eastern seaboard, Mount Washington, skiing Bretton Woods is a must for thrill seekers and history buffs alike. With a history beginning in the 1700s, this Mount Washington resort offers unforgettable views and experiences. The lifts are modern and the terrain is pleasing, with over 464 acres of alpine and Nordic trails. Recognized for the third year in a row for the “Best Grooming in the East” by readers of SKI magazine, Bretton Woods remains a top choice for skiers and riders alike. www.brettonwoods.com

MAINE Maine has some mighty big ski mountains and offers some of the best places to ski with full-service ski resorts. When it comes to real estate, buyers must decide on slope-side or off-mountain home. Prices per square foot costs more for slope-side properties than off-mountain, but the trade-off is the ability to walk out the door directly to the slopes. There are a variety of options from studio condos up to six-bedroom townhomes. Associations, which are very common, offer homeowners ease of access for those who wish to rent their property while they are away.

SUNDAY RIVER | If you are looking for serious snow conditions, from October through April, visit Sunday River for the best snow. It stretches three miles across eight peaks with a super-efficient lift system (including a hybrid chondola lift) and some of the best grooming. www.sundayriver.com

SUGARLOAF | Sugarloaf, in northern Maine, is legendary and dates back to 1950. It offers the East’s only above tree line snowfields from the 4,237foot scenic summit, 2,820-foot continuous vertical, and a very loyal skier following of “Loafers.” Stay at the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel for the best onslope lodging and you can walk to the lifts and enjoy the famous Sugarloaf après-ski. www.sugarloafmd.com Skiers in the US are just as serious as the slopes you can find here.
