ater conservation is good for the environment, and it can save you money. Those assertions fall under the general category of “stuff everyone knows,” but behind them lie facts and figures that are well worth considering.
Information on water and ways to save it are detailed in a program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The program, WaterSense, is both a label to help consumers identify water-efficient products and a reservoir of facts and tips. According to the website epa.gov/watersense:
we use. Letting your faucet run for five minutes uses about as much energy as letting a 60-watt light bulb run for 22 hours. About 70 percent of U.S. electricity is generated by burning coal and natural gas, which contributes to climate change.
>> The average household spends as much as $500 annually on its water and sewer bill. Households can save an estimated $170 annually by installing waterefficient fixtures and appliances, which can reduce water consumption by 30 percent.
On the savings front for water and money, the WaterSense label is on more than 300 models of showerheads, 730 types of tank-style high efficiency toilets and 2,600 faucet or faucet accessory models such as aerators. Such products use less water and perform as well as or better than standard models, the environmental agency maintains. WaterSense products are independently tested and certified to meet the EPA’s criteria for efficiency and performance. If all inefficient toilets in U.S. homes were converted to WaterSense-labeled models, the nation could save more than 640 billion gallons of water per year — the equivalent to 15 days of flow over Niagara Falls.

To the relief of interior designers everywhere, today’s sleek, flat screens have changed all that. No longer is the TV the obtrusive, attention-hogging star. So let décor take the spotlight as the television blends into the background. Here are five tips for hiding a flat screen or artistically incorporating it into a room:
Recess time: The ultimate space saver is to recess a flat screen into the wall, but this option requires the skills of a carpenter and some financial investment. Remember to allow enough depth to be able to tilt the TV for optimal viewing.
