any believe that accenting a home with lamps is less about a formula and more about a feeling.
But there is an art to the process that comes with its own set of guidelines. Interior designers often equate lamps in a room to the jewelry you might choose to complement an outfit. They are accessories used to accent and highlight, but they’re not necessarily the stars of the show — nor should they be. But just like jewelry, you sure know when you’ve made the wrong choice. The experts at sunlighting.com advise: “When choosing lighting, consider the mood you want to create and the tasks performed in the room. Then choose the appropriate fixtures in a style that complements your decor. Most rooms are used for multiple activities, and the right fixture can help you define zones.” So lamps serve multiple purposes, from practical importance to décor and beyond. Here are just a few tips to help you make the most of these enlightening accessories.

Balance the scale: Symmetry and balance are vital when it comes to lamps. HGTV Star judge Vern Yip advises the following: “Measure the base at its widest point — the diameter of the shade should be about twice that. And the shade should cover the switch but let a little of the neck peek out.” Complements are important: Lamps should place nice with a room and its furniture. The Decorating Diva, writing for curbly. com, notes that if your furniture is big and bold, you’ll need a big and bold lamp. Adding a tall, thin lamp to a big/bold piece is usually a decorating faux pas. By the numbers: Sarah Stebbins, writing for Real Simple online, suggests that you light three of the four corners of a room, focusing one of the lights on an object (art, a plant, a striking chair). Also, she recommends using a combination
of table lamps and floor lamps, some with a downward glow and some that shine upward. Reaching new heights: Exposed light bulbs aren’t fun to look at, which is why the type of shade and the height of the lamp are important considerations. Interior designer Bill Ferris, writing for the “Interior Design Tips” blog, notes: “As a rule of thumb, the bottom of the shade should be more or less at ear/cheek level. So unless you hang out with a lot of basketball players or jockeys, use a 5- to 6-foot-tall person as a gauge.” Light it up: How much illumination do you need? Shannon Petrie, design specialist with HGTV.com, recommends that if you want a lamp to light an entire room or provide illumination for reading, a translucent shade is best. If the lamp is strictly décor, go with opaque.

ome swimming pools come in an impressive array of sizes, shapes and configurations. When it comes to filling them, the only two options are salt water or fresh. As to which works better, well, that’s another choice. An estimated 1.3 million U.S. pool owners prefer salt water, citing easier upkeep, less eye and skin irritation, and a more efficient way to add chlorine. About 7 million fresh-water users counter with their vote for a lower up-front investment, reduced risk of stain and corrosion, and the proven reliability from over a century of good service. But while the number of salt-water pools has increased dramatically in the past few years — about 70 percent of new installations, according to one survey — each side poses issues to consider. salty is it?
No, a saltwater pool doesn’t taste like the ocean. In fact, it doesn’t even taste particularly salty. That’s because ocean water carries a salt concentration of up to 35,000 parts per million compared to a saltwater pool’s rather mild 3,200 ppm. That’s a figure so low, it’s officially classified as fresh water.

As for fresh-water setups, the savings on the initial cost of a generator may be appealing. But that still leaves pool chemistry as a do-ityourself thing.
Bottom line: There’s really no clear winner. Salt water or fresh water? Depending on what you think is important, that’s the best pick.
pH – A basic measure of acidity, it can easily be regulated with storebought items like soda ash.
Alkalinity – Vital for keeping a proper pH level so chlorine doesn’t lose its kick, it responds nicely to muriatic acid (too high) or baking soda (too low).
