GARDENING IN WINTER? IT CAN BE DONE!

READY… SET… SPRING! One way to beat the winter doldrums this season is to liven up your home with greenery. Green thumb or not, the key is to start small, says gardening author Ann Whitman, who suggests beginning with a terrarium, a miniature tabletop garden. “Terrariums invite you in for a closer look and provide a perfect escape from the winter weather outside,” Whitman says. “Terrariums are easy to care for and don’t require any special skills for success…not much more than occasional watering and trimming.” The proper vessel is most crucial to your terrarium’s success. Modern models are substantial, and angled with beveled glass and copper-colored metal trimming (real copper would turn green). Take care to select plants that are specifically suited for terrariums—they should not require a high level of maintenance. Architectural style There is nothing wrong with building the standard rectangular platform on the back of your house. You can make even the simplest

design interesting with attractive finish details and/or an additional tier. Repeat details found on your home’s exterior — the slope of the roof, the shape of the windows, the style of pillars and railings, even lattice work — to make the new space appear as a harmonious extension to your home. Choose materials in colors and finishes that complement your existing exterior. For a custom look, add built-in benches and planters.

Materials and maintenance Several different types of wood are used for decks along with composite materials, aluminum and vinyl. n Pressure treated lumber is strong and less expensive than other decking. It is chemically treated to resist rot and it looks and performs best when sealed annually. n Southern yellow pine is a soft wood, pale in color, and easy to work with. When treated for outdoor use, it resists rot. For peak performance and style, stain and seal this decking material each year. n Cedar is lightweight and naturally rot resistant. To prevent cedar from turning gray, you’ll need to pressure clean the planks and seal them annually. n Redwood provides a beautiful, long-

lasting decking surface. It holds stain and sealants well. To keep redwood looking like new, apply a quality sealer annually.

erhaps nothing sets a room’s mood as adeptly as lighting. In the world of décor, it’s easy to inspire romance, bathe a space in brilliant illumination or highlight an objet d’art with a simple choice of light.

According to the design experts at Better Homes & Gardens, track lighting can act as a downlight, a floodlight, a spotlight and an accent light. If you fit a room with enough tracks, it can serve as a room's overall illumination system. Just as there are many functionalities of a track system, different forms and configurations also come into play. Houzz.com lists the following examples: n The standard track or straight track
