o you stay up late and get up early, tossing and turning in between? Medical research says lack of sleep not only can make you look and feel older, it decreases attention span, impedes creativity and weakens the immune system. Give yourself the best chance for a good night’s sleep with a bedroom environment that truly encourages rest.

Upgrade your mattress and pillow. If you sleep with a partner, look for a mattress that reduces motion transfer. Foam mattresses and individually wrapped or pocketed coils do an excellent job of keeping each person comfortable without transferring motion to the other side of the bed.

Choose a quiet palette. Sunshine yellow may be the perfect hue to brighten your kitchen, but it's not ideal for encouraging sleep. Opt for a more calming shade on bedroom

Keep your cool. Most people sleep best when the room temperature is between 60 and 67 degrees. Being too cold also can disrupt sleep, so have the right amount of covers within arm’s reach. If you alternate between being too hot and too cold, consider moisture wicking sheets, which may help regulate your body temperature.

Banish work. Don’t turn your bedroom into an office or workout space — just seeing the equipment can keep you thinking about tomorrow’s to-do-list. Move extraneous items elsewhere, and confine clutter to drawers or closets.

Beware blue light. Begin dimming lights and turning off electronics an hour or two before bedtime. The blue light emitted by many TV sets, computer screens, tablets and smart phones has been shown to suppress the body’s sleep hormone, melatonin, and negatively affect sleep. If you like to read at night, use a small reading lamp or read from a device that is not backlit. After bedtime, the fewer glowing lights, the better.
