Step into luxury

Floored - You will be, by the magnificent creations of Schenck and Company. Written by Joe Doggett

G

reg Schenck stands by his product. And on it, for 30 years now as founder of Houston’s premier flooring company.

After leaving the University of Houston with a degree in marketing, Schenck partnered in the early 1980s with a friend and found himself “slab hopping,” bidding hardwood-floor jobs in half-built homes. Professionally, that was not going to be enough for this native Houstonian who claims to be “cursed by an eye that appreciates quality and perfection.” He bought out the partner, aimed higher, and has since ridden shotgun over a shop that produces artistic masterpieces – on which people also can walk.

Those who know Schenck best consider that self-described “curse” of his more of a gift, one that enables him to see opportunity where others see hurdles, beauty where others see rubbish. “I’m constantly looking for new things, new materials, new designs,” said Schenck from across a handmade table that also is his creation, “always looking for something to distinguish our product.” And distinguished it is, as say Houston’s finest homebuilders and most discriminating homeowners. His floors range from focal point to signature in a room, depending on their owners’ tastes, and those who know the company’s work can identify it instantly beneath their feet.

Schenck enjoys another critical degree of separation from those who consider themselves his competition: He’s never turned down a client’s request except when budget became an issue. If it can be imagined, Schenck believes strongly, it can be created. Words fall well short of describing the intricacy of his floors, none of which is exactly like another. The modest showroom in which Schenck makes first impressions on clients is a gallery of exquisite samples, and dozens more hang on one long wall in the warehouse. Worth noting, Schenck doesn’t maintain an inventory of materials, “because every job is different.” The surprisingly large building, deliberately unimpressive from the street, is home to installation supplies, woodworking tools, people who are experts in the use of those items, and ample space for them to practice their craft. Only after the client’s plan is complete and the bid is accepted does Schenck set out to select his raw materials. He prefers to work with domestic woods – including everything from traditional oak to refurbished pallets to logs recovered from river bottoms – but has access also to a multitude of exotic woods. “I’d rather support the domestic economy,” said Schenck, “and work with wood from sustainable forests.” Schenck and Company politely and respectfully discourages clients whose interests lie more in cost than in custom or who do not appreciate the expertise that goes into a Schenck and Company finished product. “If you think a wood floor is a wood floor,” he said, “we’re not a good fit.” If, on the other hand, your vision is of elaborate inlays or planks that curve with the lines of an elegant staircase or wrap around a majestic column or feature inlays of stone or even rawhide, Schenck is your man. Schenck’s materials and designs afford his clients an unlimited number of options, but he maintains a keen sense of where to draw the line. “I can’t stand floors in which the installer threw in everything but the kitchen sink,” he said. “It doesn’t flow. It doesn’t fit the home.” In separating himself from that original partner, knowingly or not, Schenck concurrently separated himself from every other flooring company. He trusts his own instincts, his own tastes, and they have served him quite well. “I know what I like, and that’s what I do,” he said with a delicate balance of confidence and humility. “And I despise mediocrity.”

You’ll find no mediocrity under the Schenck and Company name. Nor compromise. Nor shortcuts. “We’re craftsmen,” Schenck summarized. “We do it right.” Step by step Every Schenck and Company floor begins with a client meeting, a chance for floor buyer and floor builder to establish an important, personal rapport. That leads smoothly into collaboration on design, materials, timeline and – gulp – budget. Once each of those items has been attended, Greg Schenck acquires the raw materials from which pure beauty will be extracted and placed proudly in a home or office or other instantly unique structure. Floors are cut individually, piece by piece no matter how many hundreds or thousands of pieces are involved, and laid dry to ensure perfect fit in a special section of the shop. From there, once Schenck and the customer are satisfied that the flooring is as ordered, the floor is disassembled and transferred to the location. Installers then put the puzzle together a final time, stain and finish it on site, and then stand aside as the homeowner takes his or her first slack-jawed steps across that new floor. The right people Schenck and Company employees a generous staff – not subcontractors – of expert carpenters and installers, a surprising few of whom were experienced in the flooring industry when they applied for their jobs. They can be taught installation and woodworking, Schenck said. More important to him is how passionate they are about their work and how devoted they are to it. “I’ve got the best installers in the business,” he said, noting that several of them have been with the company for 15-20 years. “We approach every job as if we were in our own home and we were spending our own money.”

T

he “Malibu Lifestyle” really says it all. This stunningly beautiful, affluent beachfront city in northwestern Los Angeles sits on a 27-mile strip of prime Pacific coastline. “The Bu,” as surfers, locals and Alan Harper call it, is famous for its warm, sandy beaches that front the luxurious homes of many residents. Others live in the picturesque narrow canyons formed by the Santa Monica Mountains to the North and Topanga Canyon to the East. Malibu is easier to pronounce than “Humaliwo” — the Native American word for “the surf sounds loudly.” Drop the “Hu” and you’ll see where the new name derived, explains Marcus Beck of Prudential Malibu Realty, top Realtor to the rich and famous and wannabes looking for homes in Malibu. Spectacular scenery abounds at every turn. Here, as Marcus says, “nature provides an awesome playground.” Early Spanish influences are still strongly felt in this stretch that was once closely guarded private property. The Rindges, owners of the original 13,000 ranch, actually hired guards back in the late 1800s to keep trespassers out. They even defeated the Southern Pacific Railroad in court, stopping tracks from being laid. (Their home, the Rindge House, a National Register site, can be seen in Malibu Creek State Park.) Ah, but you can’t fight City Hall. The state, wanting to build the Pacific Coast Highway, went to court too, and won. But Rhoda May Rindge had the final word, of sorts. Widowed, she refused to sell off her land, and opened a small ceramic tile factory that grew to over 100 workers. Time and the economy won in the end. But Rhoda May’s distinctive Moorish/Arts & Crafts creations, known as Malibu tiles, now are found in luxury homes throughout Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. She is remembered. Oil tycoon J. Paul Getty opened his Getty Villa in Malibu, patterning it after the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum and other ancient sites. Now it’s a museum beyond compare. Actually, you could spend the next 20 years trying to see all the celebrities’ homes in Malibu. To name just a few of the past and current residents:

“A village in a forest overlooking a white sand beach” — that is the storybook city called Carmel-by-the-Sea. Incredible natural scenery, a rich artistic population and Clint Eastwood as mayor — Carmel-by-the-Sea is an aesthetic Pacific Coast paradise in every sense of the word. Dogs are welcome almost everywhere, high heel shoes can’t be worn without a permit. This one-square-mile city is beautifully tucked away on a gently rising slope above a magnificent white Pacific Ocean beach. From the 6th Century on (it’s believed), ancient folks were drawn to this area, with the Spanish arriving in the mid-15th Century. They named this paradise after Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Mission Carmel actually contained the state’s first library and its founder, Father Serra, is called the “Father of California.” It passed into the hands of a French businessman who set up a brickworks and bakery. A dispute with another area called Carmel led to the addition of “by-the-Sea.” From the very beginning, Carmel lured artists, so aptly described by Jack London in his “The Valley of the Moon.” Swishing their brushes around were Mary Austin, Armin Hansen, George Sterling, and Clark Ashton Smith, to name just a few. Theater flourished, as did other venues and soon the roster of internationally recognized names spread across the arts. The poet George Sterling is credited with establishing the town’s literary base. Poet Robinson Jeffer’s Tor House, on a windswept barren seaside promontory is open to the public. Today Carmel’s Art, Bach and Shakespeare Festivals draw international audiences annually. A unusually strong emphasis on protecting and enhancing the city’s natural coastal beauty has given Carmel such a reputation, it often hosts delegation wanting to know how it retains such small scale authenticity in today’s world. Trees are so treasured and revered, existing ones cannot be removed for construction and barren lots must be planted. This unique municipality has no streetlights or parking meters; houses have names, not street numbers and no home mail delivery. Overnight delivery is possible, but only with geographical addresses,” a street name, the cross street name and the number of houses from that intersection.

This doesn’t (didn’t) seem to discourage celebrities from making their homes in Carmel, including Jean Arthur, Doris Day, Clint Eastwood, Joan Fontaine, Sinclair Lewis, Jack Lundon, John Madden, Upton Sinclair, Robert Louis Stevenson, Betty White and Ryan Phinny. And, as would be expected with such a notable population, the amenities demanded by those who can afford the very best are found in Carmel in abundance —shopping, entertainment, education and, of course, cuisine. Carmel is a haven of coffee shops and its proximity to fresh seafood, the fertile Salinas Valley and 75+ wineries in the famous Monterey County ensure the very best of dining. World class fishing, kayaking, surfing and scuba diving draw water sports lovers to the coast, while others head inland for exciting horseback riding, jogging, walking and bicycling along magnificent coastal bluffs. Nearby are renowned golf courses and tennis courts. Just a couple of hours south of San Francisco, the picturesque ambiance of Carmel extends throughout the town that is redolent with myriads of Hugh Comstock’s whimsical cottages and other delightful architectural styles. “Residents rule!” could be a city motto.
