TO PLAY
In 2004, North Beach became the first beach in Wisconsin to earn the Blue Wave Beach designation from the National Clean Beaches Council. The City of Racine, the beach’s owner, has worked hard to keep it a Blue Wave Beach. North Beach is among the first Great Lakes beaches where daily test results for waterborne bacteria are available in just a few hours. Water quality-related beach closures are practically non-existent. Drawn by sun, fun and sand, visitors have responded in a big way. An estimated 200,000 people visit North Beach annually. The Ironman 70.3 Racine triathlon, held in July, attracts 2,500 athletes from around the world. North Beach lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Admission and parking are free.

FISHING THE SWEET SPOT in Racine County
HOME OF THE BIG ONE! Racine and its charter captains are proud of SALMON-A-RAMA, a nationally known fishing tournament held annually in midJuly. This derby-style contest, covering all of Lake Michigan, offers a $15,000 grand prize for the biggest fish overall. There are also cash prizes in individual fish species categories as well as a one-day Super Sweepstakes contest. Salmon-A-Rama is presented by Salmon Unlimited of Wisconsin. Visit www.salmona-rama.com. Don’t think there aren’t big fish to be caught! A world’s record 41.15-pound brown trout, caught off Wind Point, took the 2010 Salmon-A-Rama grand prize.
FISHING THE ROOT
Fishing on the Root River near Horlick Dam.
Of the more than 300 miles of Lake Michigan’s
Wisconsin shoreline, a 25-mile stretch can truly lay claim to the title “sport fishing sweet spot.” Those 25 miles — from the Illinois state line to the Oak Creek Power Plant — produce 38 percent of all fish caught on charter boats in Wisconsin. Fishing charters in these waters catch an eye-popping 58 percent of all Coho salmon, 43 percent of all lake trout, 39 percent of all brown trout, 17 percent of all Chinook salmon and 12 percent of all rainbow trout (steelheads.) Given those statistics, it’s no wonder Racine is an extremely popular port for fishing enthusiasts from across the country. How can you get in on the action? An excellent starting point is to connect with an experienced, licensed charter captain. Fishing Charters of Racine is an association of 14 captains who thoroughly know the most productive Lake Michigan hot spots. Visit www.fishracinewi.com. Take these steps as you plan your Lake Michigan sport fishing trip: 12
n Determine your party size — The Coast Guard sets a maximum limit of six (6) people per charter boat. n Choose your fishing times — Charter trips are typically 5 hours or 8 hours. Normal morning times are 7 a.m. to noon and normal afternoon times are 1 to 6 p.m. Additional hours or special hours can be arranged to meet your needs. Overnight packages are available. n Book a date — Fishing Charters of Racine members require a $100 deposit to secure your charter date. Deposits are fully refundable with a 10-day prior notice. n Obtain fishing licenses and stamps — A Wisconsin fishing license and a Great Lakes Salmon/Trout stamp are required for residents and non-residents. A two-day license is available. Purchase online at: www.dnr.state.wi.us. www.realracine.com • 1-800-C-RACINE
THE ROOT RIVER, which winds through parts of the City of Racine and the Village of Mount Pleasant, is renowned for fly fishing, as large trout and salmon make their way upstream to spawn in the spring and fall. The Root is easily accessible to anglers. Public access is available along the Root River Parkway, Cedar Bend Park, Island Park, Lincoln Park and Colonial Park. The Root River Steelhead Facility, located in Lincoln Park off Dominik Drive, is a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource (DNR) facility used to collect eggs and fish for hatchery purposes. During the spawning runs, visitors may watch fish through viewing windows and in a holding pond.

The county, and its cities, villages and towns, all have parkland where visitors can simply stretch their legs or enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, cycling and fishing or organized sports. The Racine County parks system has a wide variety of sites, including:
The Real Racine Visitor Center, at I-94 and Highway 20, is Racine County’s first Travel Green Wisconsin (TGW)certified location. The building, based on a design inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, is energy efficient. Its grounds include a rain garden, which naturally diffuses rainwater, and a demonstration organic vegetable garden. TGW, initiated by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, is the first state-sponsored sustainable travel certification program in the nation.
COLONEL HEG MEMORIAL PARK, 20 acres, 6300
Heg Park Road, Norway. An 1830s log cabin and museum, staffed by the Wind Lake Historical Society, provides history education on summer weekend afternoons.
EVANS PARK, 66 acres, Highway 20 (just west of the Highway C intersection), Yorkville. Tucked away from a busy highway is a small, simple park that offers a quiet spot for people looking for a break from the routine. EAGLE LAKE PARK, 25 acres, Church Road, Dover. A beautiful shelter with picnic tables, grills, electrical outlets and a lake view await Eagle Lake picnickers. There are also playgrounds and areas for volleyball and baseball. The lake is popular for fishing all year round. BUSHNELL PARK, 95 acres, Town of Burlington, along the Fox River. This park includes baseball and soccer fields, horseshoe courts, large shelter, picnic grounds, playground equipment, a trail system and fishing spots.
A pair of 415-foot wind turbines is a prominent part of eastern Racine County’s skyline. The turbines, which produce about 8 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually (enough power for 700 homes), supply power for SC Johnson’s Waxdale manufacturing facility in the Village of Mount Pleasant. The plant — the size of 36 football fields — also uses waste methane gas from a nearby landfill and clean-burning natural gas to generate its own electrical energy.

in Racine County

The county — and city — take their names from “racine,” the French word for root. The Root River, named for the tangled tree roots along its banks, enters Lake Michigan in a natural harbor. This harbor area became the original settlement in the 1830s for what became Racine County. A great starting point to explore Racine County history is the Racine Heritage Museum, 701 Main St., Racine. This compact museum, housed in a former Carnegie Library building, contains exhibits that tell stories of the fascinating, innovative people who have called Racine County home. These include astronaut Laurel Clark, inventor A.B Modine, agricultural industrialist J.I. Case and the SC Johnson family.
Racine County Sports Hall of Fame.

Racine County’s rich history is celebrated every day!
DeKoven Center overlooks Lake Michigan.
Other exhibits include the Racine area’s many inventions, such as Horlick’s Malted Milk, the Hamilton Beach food mixer, the In-Sink-Erator waste disposer and the Twin Disc clutch. The museum also includes a look at Racine’s abolitionists and their Underground Railroad as well as stories of Lake Michigan sailing and shipbuilding. KRINGLE Wisconsin’s State Pastry
It’s deliciously official! In June 2013, Wisconsin law designated Kringle as the official State Pastry. This distinctive oval-shaped, flaky pastry has been a Racine County tradition since Danish immigrants brought it to Wisconsin in the mid-19th century. An authentic Danish Kringle is 32 layers of flaky, buttery dough filled with a variety of fruits and nuts and baked until golden brown. Varieties include pecan, almond, raspberry, cherry, apple, strawberry and cream cheese. Among seasonal selections are turtle, cranberry, cinnamon and key lime. Kringle making is a time- and laborintensive process. Bakers repeatedly fold together butter and flour and then refrigerate the dough to produce a delicate, flaky texture. The effort is well worth it! Kringle from Racine has gained an enthusiastic worldwide following. You may have seen it featured on TV, including the Food Network, the Travel Channel and the “Today Show.” You’ll easily find Kringle at local bakeries, grocery stores and other outlets throughout the area. Our bakers proudly ship their Kringle all over the world — particularly during the Christmas holiday season. Go ahead, enjoy a taste of the Official Wisconsin Pastry from America’s Kringle Capital!
You’ll have no problem finding Danish Kringle in Racine County. The popular pastry is available at each bakery, as well as many area grocery stores and other outlets. Or, if you prefer, you can order Kringle through each bakery’s website. Bendtsen’s Bakery (www.bendtsensbakery.com) 3200 Washington Ave., Racine.

KRINGLE FUN FACTS • Kringle takes its name from certain knots and cleats in Scandinavian sailing lingo. • Kringle was originally pretzel-shaped. Racine bakers adopted the easy-to-serve oval shape that contains more delicious filling. • It takes about three days to make a Kringle from start to finish. • Almond, pecan and raspberry are among the most popular Kringle flavors. • President Obama took home three Kringles (pecan, cherry and cheese) during a June 2010 visit to Racine.

FAIRS AND FESTS PHOTO COURTESY OF REAL RACINE
Racine County knows how to throw a party. Nearly
every weekend — especially from May through September — you’ll find a festival or celebration. Independence Day is always done up right in Racine County. Sturtevant Fireworks Celebration is July 3. Parades are held July 4 in Racine, Union Grove, Waterford and Raymond. A celebration and dance are held in Burlington. The Waterford area’s population explodes each July for the Waterford Hot Air Balloon Festival. The popular event includes morning and evening balloon ascensions, a craft and vendor fair, a car show, a 5k run, a pancake breakfast and more. Union Grove is home to the Racine County Fair, one of Wisconsin’s oldest and

ChocolateFest, held Memorial Day weekend in Burlington, kicks off the festival season in a celebration of the city’s longtime chocolate production plant. The event includes chocolate sculptures, chocolate tasting and chef demonstrations along with a carnival midway and live music. Ethnic and church festivals fill the summer weekends with food specialties, dance and entertainment. Among the county’s larger ethnic festivals are Greek Festival (Racine, late June), Italian Festival (Racine, late July), Armenian Fest (Racine, early August) and Serbian Festival (Racine, August).
most popular fairs. Held in late July, the fair’s family fun includes tractor pulls, live music, agriculture exhibits, farm animals and midway rides. The fairground also hosts Fall Harvest Days, held in mid-September, where visitors can step back in time with vintage farm equipment and demonstrations of old-time methods of threshing and hay baling. One of the year’s biggest outdoor events — Party on the Pavement — caps the festival season in Downtown Racine the last Saturday of September. Several Downtown streets are temporarily closed to make room for live bands, dancing, food, an art fair, classic cars and entertainment. The 2014 Real Racine Visitors Guide calendar starting on page 47 has dates and details. More events and updates are listed on the Real Racine website (www.realracine.com)

IN THE COUNTRY
Racine County’s country flavor includes family fun!
PHOTO BY BRAD JAECK/PHOTOGRAPHIC DESIGN LTD.
As you leave the main highways for one of the rural roads that crisscross the county, you’ll spot fields of cabbage, pumpkins, broccoli and other vegetables. Depending on the season, you’ll find farm stands with fresh-picked strawberries, raspberries and sweet corn. Home-grown apples are the star at Apple Holler Family Farm and Country Store, 5006 S. Sylvania Ave., Yorkville. All those apples are turned into jelly, pies and other treats. In season, you’ll also find peaches, pears and pumpkins. An orchard plus a variety of produce and flowers take center stage at Borzynski’s Farm & Floral Market, 11600 Washington Ave., Mount Pleasant. Borzynski’s is also famous for its gigantic corn maze each fall. More home-grown food can be found at Walvoord Farm Berries, 21632 Plank Road (Highway A), Dover. Pick-your-own or pre-picked strawberries and raspberries are
available in the summer months. Autumn is pumpkin picking time. Swan’s Pumpkin Farm, 5930 Highway H, Caledonia, and the Land of the Giants, 11823 Durand Ave., Sturtevant, are known throughout the area for their huge pumpkin selections and family-friendly harvest-time activities. Get up-close with friendly animals at three Racine County attractions: Jo-Don Farms, 5907 Nicholson Road, Caledonia; Bear Den Zoo and Petting Farm, 6831 Big Bend Road, Waterford, and Green Meadows Farm, 33603 High Drive (Highway 20), Waterford. Each site has its own collection of animals and learning experiences. An admission fee is charged. Meanwhile, the Hoppe Homestead Dairy Farm, 33701 Hill Valley Drive, Waterford, offers a by-appointment visit to a working dairy farm. Slow down, roll down the windows and enjoy rural Racine County — your place in the country!
ANIMALS, ANIMALS, ANIMALS! You’ll find a remarkable collection of unusual and endangered wildlife at the Racine Zoo, 2131 N. Main St. Located along Lake Michigan, just north of Downtown Racine, the zoo cares for more than 100 different species of animals. You’ll find lions, tigers, giraffes, rhinos, bears, camels, wallaroos, penguins and many, many more. The zoo’s compact, 32-acre setting offers an easy walk for kids and

The 112-foot structure was built in 1880 to warn ships of the shallow waters off Wind Point. The project, including the light keeper’s quarters and adjacent structures, cost $40,000. The beacon, magnified by a Fresnel lens imported from France, was originally a mineral oil lamp. A light keeper and two assistants were needed to maintain and operate the light 24 hours a day. The light can be seen 19 miles away. The light was later converted to electricity and the Wind Point Lighthouse became fully automated in 1964. A rigorous climb up the 144 steps delivers spectacular views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding countryside. Tower climb dates for 2014 are: June 1, July 6, Aug. 3, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5. We asked readers of our Facebook page and e-newsletter to suggest “Hidden Gems” in Racine County. Here are a few of them: SIENA ON THE LAKE 5635 ERIE ST., CALEDONIA 262-639-4100 “Experience the cliffs and the outdoor walking labyrinth on the Siena grounds. Visitors are welcomed for reflection, gazing on the lake and mediating while walking the grass labyrinth. For peace, serenity, beauty and an attitude adjustment, it can’t be beat.”

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 716 COLLEGE AVE., RACINE 262-632-1686 “The free tour that First Presbyterian Church offers of its Underground Railroad stop is definitely a hidden gem. It probably won’t take long to spot an example of “Quilts on Barns—the Beauty of Rural Art.” This public art project has placed 21 colorful quilt patterns (mounted on 8-by-8 foot square plywood pieces) on historic barns throughout the county. The brainchild of local quilt enthusiast Kathi Wilson, “Quilts on Barns” was sponsored by the nonprofit Racine Arts Council in conjunction with Real Racine. These distinctive designs include Bear’s Paw, Wild Goose Chase, Corn and Beans, Tulip Basket and Black-Eyed Susan. The route, which threads its way through the countryside, is particularly attractive in the spring and fall. You’ll want to allow at least a half-day to see them all. A “Quilts on Barns” map display can be seen at the Real Racine Visitor Center, 14015 Washington Ave. (I-94 Exit 333), where travel counselors are happy to give directions. The Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May though October. Closed Sundays November through April. The Quilts on Barns locations are indicated by barn-shaped symbols on the fold-out Racine County map found at back of the 2014 Real Racine Visitors Guide. Or, visit the Quilts on Barns website: www.quiltsonbarns.com. Whether its spotting barn quilts or simply exploring the scenic back rounds, visitors will find beauty and surprises at every turn. Many of the area’s most popular attractions, such as the Wind Point Lighthouse, Swan’s Pumpkin Farm, Apple Holler and Borzynski’s Farm and Floral Market, are minutes from the Racine County Quilts on Barns route. www.realracine.com • 1-800-C-RACINE

Explore Carthage
Carthage College does more than teach about nature; it’s part of it. A four-year private liberal arts college located on the shores of Lake Michigan, visitors to the 80-acre campus are encouraged to tour the arboretum and wildlife sanctuary. Carthage also offers frequent theatre and music performances, in addition to spectator-friendly facilities for NCAA Division III sports. A short drive to downtown Kenosha brings visitors to the free Dinosaur Discovery Museum, housing discoveries from the Carthage paleontology program. Midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, the campus www.carthage.edu lies within reach of two of the Midwest’s most popular destinations.
