Trump shows he revels in dangerous chaos

By Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. President Donald Trump’s most recent provocation — suddenly issuing an order banning the admission into the United States of refugees and immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries — created chaos and fury that had to be expected. Airports across the world, including Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport where 11 individuals were denied entry to the United States, were engulfed with demonstrators. Judges issued emergency orders staying enforcement of parts of the order. Families found their children studying abroad unable to return home, or their loved ones attending a funeral stranded in an airport. Translators who had risked their lives for American soldiers in Iraq suddenly found their green cards useless and their lives at great risk. Both intelligence professionals and State Department diplomats have protested the order. Trump clearly revels in this chaos. He proves to his voters that he’ll fulfill his campaign promises, despite opposition. He shows them that he’s getting things done. He postures strong on securing Americans against foreign terrorists. He defines his opponents as bleeding heart liberals, more concerned about rights than security, more internationalist than nationalist. He views this all as a win. Trump’s act is based on a lie: that America is not careful in vetting those refugees from battle zones that seek refuge in our country from violence or persecution. In fact, our vetting is already among the most stringent in the world. Trump told the Christian Broadcasting Network that Christians would be given preference over other religious groups, asserting falsely that under Obama, “If you were a Muslim you could come in, but if you were a Christian, it was almost impossible.” In fact, last year we admitted virtually as many Christian refugees as Muslims, despite the fact that far more Muslims are at risk and seeking refuge. But this president has shown that he’s prepared to act on the basis of “alternative facts” when he so chooses. The real problem is that the unintended consequences are likely to be far more dangerous than doing nothing. For ISIS and al-Qaida, the order is gift. It feeds their argument that the Muslim world is facing a war on Islam led by the Great Satan (the U.S.) intent on persecuting Muslims. The anger and hatred generated will make

ADW | 2

it more difficult for moderate Muslim leaders to cooperate with the U.S. At home, a Muslim community under siege — and faced with rising hate crimes — is likely to become more closed, not less, and less cooperative, not more. If we will not respect their rights and security, they will be less likely to be concerned for ours. Across the world, the order reveals an America that is frightened, not strong, and insular, not expansive. Trump has just mocked his own argument that our allies should bear a fair share of the defense burden, for he’s made it clear the U.S. will not do its part in offering refuge to the displaced — many of them driven from their homes by wars that we started or continue. And America’s claim to be a champion of human rights has just been weakened by our own actions once more. The irony here is that Trump gets the threat wrong. Seven countries were singled out for special prohibition — a ban on all travelers, not just refugees for 90 days, visa or no visa. Not one person from those countries has killed any Americans in a terrorist attack inside the U.S. The perpetrators of American terrorist attacks in Boston, San Bernardino, Calif., Fort Hood in Texas, and Orlando, Fla. — did not come from the countries banned, and all were radicalized homegrown individuals.

Similarly, the hijackers of 9/11 did not come from the countries that are banned. They came from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Lebanon, none of which are on the list. There must be some other reason than terrorist threat for the selection. It may not simply be coincidental that the countries listed for bans are those where Trump’s company does no business, while the nations from which the 9/11 attackers came — and yet are exempted — are places where Trump has done or tried to do business. Democrats have said they would try to get the order rescinded for its trampling of human rights, its lack of preparation and confused definitions. The real question is whether Republicans embrace this action or make their opposition known. Trump is happy to mock Democrats. His aides know that he has to learn to work with Republicans who control majorities in both houses of Congress. Thus far, Republicans such as Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Jeff Flake have risked Trump’s wrath by objecting to the order. It is revealing that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell chose to duck — saying the courts would decide whether the order is constitutional — while House Speaker Paul Ryan chose to embrace the order rather than criticize it. These are not profiles in courage. Mayor Kasim Reed’s Statement on Refugees Detained at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport “While the actions of Judge Ann M. Donnelly of Federal District Court in Brooklyn should be applauded, it is evident that President Trump’s executive order barring refugees and migrants from several Muslim countries has already caused chaos, confusion and irreparable harm. Atlanta is proud to be a welcoming city. We are a community which has stood up for the civil and human rights of every person, and we will not waver now. I firmly believe that President Trump’s executive orders violate the principles of the U.S. Constitution. These orders promote dangerous public policy, eroding the trust between public safety agencies and the communities they serve, which will undermine public safety in the City of Atlanta and across our country. Our city stands shoulder to shoulder with those

Kemp warns storm victims to be wary of unlicensed contractors ADW reports In the aftermath of violent tornadoes in South Georgia, Secretary of State Brian Kemp warns affected property owners to be wary of unlicensed contractors once rebuilding is underway. “Unfortunately, scams are common in communities recently impacted by natural disasters. Con artists invade to make a quick buck and, many times, leave the job unfinished,” stated Secretary Kemp. “I strongly encourage storm victims to research their options before hiring a contractor to make repairs.” Before you select a contractor, check his or her licensure status. Under Georgia law, general and residential contractors must hold a valid license. You can verify an individual or company’s license through the Professional Licensing Boards Divi-

sion twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Document property damage before the work starts. Taking pictures or a video establishes a record of existing damage before a contractor gives you a repair estimate. This documentation is helpful if you plan on filing an insurance claim to fix the damage, and it will keep you from paying for new property damage caused by a contractor. Do not fall for high-pressure sales tactics. Reputable contractors will not go door-to-door to get your business, and if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Take time to research the business to see if it is locally owned and operated, and ask the contractor for references and proof of insurance. Always get multiple estimates. It is always unwise to rush into a contract before weighing

other options, even in an emergency. Be present for each inspection to make sure that you understand what is going into the contractor’s estimate analysis. Before you seal the deal, get it in writing. Do not pay for any work up front until all parties finalize and sign the agreement. The agreement should outline the scope of the work, materials, price, and timeline. If you have insurance, make sure your insurance company signs off on everything before the work begins. Finally, the contractor should be responsible for obtaining any necessary building permits, not you. If you receive a suspicious solicitation or experience poor workmanship, please contact the Georgia Board of Residential and General Contractors at (478) 207-2440 or email soscontact@ sos.ga.gov to submit a complaint.

BUSINESS Settlement with Western Union, a win for Georgia consumers

February 2 - 8, 2017

Attorney General Chris Carr announced a settlement with Coloradobased The Western Union Company, resolving a multistate investigation which focused on complaints of consumers who used Western Union’s wire transfer service to send money to third parties involved in schemes to defraud consumers. In addition to Georgia, 48 states and the District of Columbia participated in this settlement. “Criminal scam artists are adept at developing all kinds of schemes to convince consumers to wire them money,” said Attorney General Chris Carr. “We want to do everything we can to protect our consumers from these malicious practices, and our involvement in this settlement with other attorneys general is a big indicator that Georgia will stand firmly against these activities in any form.” Consumers who receive solicitations from strangers promising big winnings should toss those letters in the trash, delete the e-mail or hang up the phone. And, consumers who meet someone online should always be cautious about wiring money, particularly if meeting in person has never taken place. Often

times, schemes include the following scenarios: Lottery and contest scams in which consumers are told they have won a large sum of money but must first wire money to pay required taxes or fees before receiving their winnings; Loved one scams in which a consumer believes his or her relative or close friend is in immediate danger and needs money right away; Romance scams in which someone poses as a love interest and then soon

begins asking consumers to send money for various reasons, such as medical emergencies, car accidents, muggings, emergency travel and more The settlement requires Western Union to develop and put into action a comprehensive, anti-fraud program designed to help detect and prevent incidents where consumers who have been the victims of fraud use Western Union to wire money to scam artists.

With February being Black History month, it is only right to reflect on Madame C.J. Walker, the woman who revolutionized the African American beauty space. Janell Stephens, creator of the all-natural beauty product line Camille Rose Naturals, understands the impact of this pioneer in the success that she and others in the multi-cultural beauty industry, have experienced. For Janell, a mother of five young children, that success includes the exponential growth of the product line she began in her kitchen 6 years ago. Today it is sold nationally in a host of retailers including Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, Bed Bath & Beyond and now CVS. CVS is now added to the growing list of national retailers carrying the brand that includes Target, Walmart, select Whole Foods, and Bed Bath & Beyond Camille Rose products are a leader in skin and hair care solutions for natural sophisticates. The brand’s signature line of products will now be available for sale in CVS locations nationwide. With current retailers already including select Whole Foods, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and Walmart, the addition of CVS to the Camille Rose retailer roster

is proof of the continued growth of the company that was founded Stephens’ kitchen in 2010. Today with a beauty line consisting of a wide variety of gourmet products for the hair and body, the brand is continuously growing to meet the needs of the Camille Rose client base. “CVS is a major retailer with thousands of stores nationwide,” says Janell Stephens. “Having our products on their shelves allows the Camille Rose brand to be available to a wider segment of the population who would benefit from what we have to offer. We look forward to growing with CVS and introducing new products to their customers as they become available.” To celebrate the announcement of the Camille Rose products in CVS retailers, the brand has launched the “Have You Seen Us” online campaign. The contest, which launches on February 1, 2017 asks consumers to document if they have seen the Camille Rose brand at their local CVS by taking a photo and uploading it to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #CRMeetsCVS. Select photos will be reposted

on the Camille Rose social media pages with one winner chosen a week to receive a Camille Rose gift set. This fun and engaging contest will take place throughout the month of February, with the overall “Have You Seen Us” campaign running indefinitely. When Stephens initially planted the seeds of what would eventually grow into the Camille Rose brand, her needs were simple; she merely wanted a product that would work well with her family’s sensitive skin. A dedicated vegan and mother of five, the Louisiana native and mompreneur created each handmade product under the mantra that what is used by yourself and your family should not only be moisturizing and of high quality but worry free as well. This standard was unlike the mission of many of the popular beauty products on the market at the time with harsh chemicals and unpronounceable substances being the industry standard. Today, even as the brand continues to expand into new territories, that initial company goal is still at the forefront of everything that the company undertakes. “You can trust Camille Rose to source ingredients with integrity, mix with a pinch of love, and to always consider your total health and wellness,” sconcludes Stephens.

Over 1,000 metro Atlanta commuters enrolled in the Georgia Commute Options’ Gimme Five program in 2016, reducing a total of 600,000 vehicle miles on our region’s roads. “Clean commuting helps ease congestion region-wide, which gives everyone an easier ride to work,” says Phil Peevy, Georgia DOT’s Air Quality and Technical Resource Branch Chief. “And there are lots of new reasons to try it out: Transit riders and vanpoolers can ride toll-free in the new I-75 South Metro Express Lanes. The I-285/SR 400 interchange is going to see a lot of construction, so clean commuting can offer some helpful relief. It’s a great time to consider a new commute.” To be eligible for the Transform Your Commute incentive, commuters may not have previously participated in Georgia Commute Options’ $3 a Day or Gimme Five programs. ‘MAYNARD,’ film about Atlanta’s first black mayor moves into final production MAYNARD, the much-anticipated documentary film, which is being made about the life and times of former Atlanta Mayor Maynard H. Jackson, is turning the power on and moving fullsteam ahead into post production. Thanks to the award-winning documentary filmmaker, Sam Pollard, the work of Auburn Avenue Films, Inc. and the perseverance of Maynard Jackson III, Wendy Eley Jackson and the production team, final interviews have occurred in Atlanta, Jackson’s home town. Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin; Jackson’s widow, Valerie Jackson; Jackson’s children; Douglas A. Blackmon, former AJC reporter and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Slavery by Another Name, Jackson’s first law partner, Andrew Patterson; his former CAO at Atlanta City Hall, George Berry; and many other individuals who played major roles in the life of this giant of a man have been in front of the camera. The mayor’s aunt, June Dobbs Butts (the only living daughter of Jackson’s grandfather, John Wesley Dobbs, who was often referred to as the mayor of Sweet Auburn Avenue), provided an interview to round out the history on the Dobbs family. Pollard, the film’s director and the creative mind that is leading the production, will continue filming evocative imagery in and around Atlanta in February. Other special interviews are in the works which include President William Clinton, former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell, and Dr. Michael Lomax, president of the United Negro College Fund, who once served as a speech writer for the mayor during his first term in office, as well as

the Commissioner of Parks & Recreation for the city. Post production is scheduled for the months of February/March; and then on to the plans of getting the film ready for submission at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2018. The MAYNARD documentary trailer was recently presented during the Choose Georgia Film Making in the South event at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival recently held in Utah. “We received outstanding support for our efforts while at Sundance,” said Wendy Eley Jackson, with Auburn Avenue Films. “We went to Sundance to have a presence at the table and to begin the process of making more connections within the industry – which we accomplished.” Jackson added. Georgia Public Broadcasting will serve as the presenting station for the film and an educational partner for MAYNARD. This partnership will insure that the history lessons of Jackson’s three terms tie into GPB’s extensive educational programming. These lessons, about Atlanta’s first African American mayor, will be provided in perpetuity for students through the GPB Education curriculum which is offered to both teachers and students. A recently added plus for the MAYNARD movie production team was the Academy Awards Nomination, Best Documentary Film Feature Category, of “I Am Not Your Negro” in which Henry Adebonojo served as a part of the production team for this film. Mr. Adebonojo is the director of photography for the MAYNARD documentary and an award-winning filmmaker and photographer.

By Danielle Jennings Since leaving her iconic daytime talk show back in 2011, Oprah Winfrey has kept herself pretty busy with her OWN network by producing and starring in some of the top-rated shows (Queen Sugar, Greenleaf) on the cable network. In addition to producing feature films such as Selma and heading her longstanding O magazine, she is just as busy now as she was when she was invading our living rooms every day. Now however, it appears that her journalism itch needs to be scratched once again and 60 Minutes is willing to fill the void. According to a new report by USA Today, Oprah Winfrey is set to return to television (and her journalism roots) as a special correspondent for the legendary news program 60 Minutes. This fall, when 60 Minutes enters its 50th season, Oprah Winfrey will step into a new role as a correspondent who will contribute occasional reports for the CBS newsmagazine. Winfrey released a statement regarding her new role at 60 Minutes and she sounds excited for the opportunity:

“I want history to remember me not just as the first black woman to be elected to Congress, not as the first black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of the United States, but as a black woman who lived in the 20th century and dared to be herself.” –Rep. Shirley Chisholm, Civil rights leader and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives for New York’s 12th district

“I’ve been a big admirer of ‘60 Minutes’ since my days as a young reporter,” Winfrey said in a statement. “I’m so excited and proud to join forces with this historic news program, which for me represents the bastion of journalistic storytelling. At a time when people are so divided, my intention is to bring relevant insight and perspective, to look at what separates us, and help facilitate real conversations between people from different backgrounds.” Jeff Fager, executive producer of 60 Minutes, commented on Winfrey presence on the show, stating: “There is only one Oprah Winfrey,” said ‘60 Minutes’ executive producer Jeff Fager in a statement. “She has achieved excellence in everything she has touched. Her body of work is extraordinary, including thousands of interviews with people from all walks of life. She is a remarkable and talented woman with a level of integrity that sets her apart and makes her a perfect fit for ‘60 Minutes’..” Well we here at HB can never get enough Oprah and we are so excited to have her going back to her roots. Congrats Mother O!

Clark Atlanta University announces the launch of Black Male Sunday initiative The Program aims to drive more black men to college By Mario Boone On a campus where more than 70 percent of the student population is female, Clark Atlanta University recognizes more has to be done to increase the number of black men enrolling in, and graduating from colleges and universities. We specifically want to encourage black men to consider CAU to continue their education. To further this important cause, CAU is launching a new program targeting young black men who are still in high school. The Black Male Sunday Initiative is the brainchild of CAU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Peter Nwosu. The Initiative calls for teams of students, faculty and staff to be dispatched to churches across Metro Atlanta during Sunday service throughout the month of February. Each team of “CAU Ambassadors,” will speak before church congregations to explain how a degree from CAU will enhance the lives of black men, improve their earning potential and make them productive members of our society. CAU President Ronald A. Johnson, as well

as Board of Trustees Chairman Gregory Morrison, Trustee Tharon Johnson, Dr. Henry Elonge, president of the Faculty Assembly and other key students, faculty, staff and alumni are also among the ambassadors taking our message of higher education for black men on the road. Nearly two dozen churches have signed on to participate in the first phase of the Initiative. It kicks off Sunday, Feb. 5 with a visit to Flipper Temple AME Church. Other participating churches include Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, Impact Church, Hillside Chapel and Truth Center and Central United Methodist Church, to name a few. Following short remarks by our ambassadors, a team of CAU admissions staff will be on hand at each church to provide university application and financial aid information and assist with other questions. For more information on the Black Male Sunday Initiative call the CAU Office of Admissions at 404.880.6605 or email admissions@ cau.edu.

GUEST COMMENTARY

GUEST COMMENTARY

by Congresswoman Robin Kelly

Our lives are on the line

Facts still matter President Donald Trump shared the below message via Twitter during his first full week in office: “I will be asking for a major investigation into VOTER FRAUD, including those registered to vote in two states, those who are illegal and…even, those who registered to vote who are dead (and many for long time). Depending on results, we will strengthen up voting procedures!” President Trump has repeatedly alleged that but for the three to five million illegal votes, he and not Secretary Clinton, would have won the 2016 election’s popular vote. He has based those claims on a “long held belief ” while not providing any supporting evidence. I, too, have a long held belief. I believe that facts are important. Fact: There were 137 million votes cast in the 2016 election and about eight instances of voter fraud reported by various states around the country. That comes out to approximately .0000006%. Fact: President Trump’s attorneys, the National Association of Secretaries of State, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, the Center for Election Innovation & Research and a long list of legislators and election administrators of all political affiliations have debunked the widespread voter fraud claims made by President Trump. Additionally, in court during Michigan’s vote recount, Trump shared, “all available evidence suggests that the 2016 general election was not tainted by fraud or mistake.” Fact: This is not new. Allegations of voter fraud have long been used as justification for voter suppression efforts. In Georgia, these tactics include massive purges of the voter rolls, voter ID laws, proof of citizenship

requirements for voter registration, and cuts to early and Sunday voting. In Alabama, the legislature passed strict voter ID laws and then proceeded to close several DMV offices in counties with large African American populations, making it more difficult for residents to get the ID necessary to vote. The same legislators distancing themselves from this particular falsehood have trafficked this same shaky theme as a pretext for voter suppression across the country. Fact: Many state and county election officials, and non-profit organizations across the country, including the New Georgia Project, The Coalition for the Peoples’ Agenda and NAACP in my home state, work tirelessly to bring Americans into the voting process. They work together without attention to political party lines. That is America’s greatness. However, President Trump’s rhetoric is dangerous and is a threat to progress. It undermines the integrity of our elections and encourages laws that disproportionately disenfranchise, and in too many cases criminalizes, voters of color. We should be making voting easier, not more difficult. We must remain vigilant and shed a bright light on facts. We must create a demand for public policy that is based on facts. During the election, there was debate about whether to take Trump’s rhetoric literally or seriously. If the first week of his administration is any indication of what we can expect in the future, I strongly encourage us to do both. Rev. Dr. Raphael G. Warnock is senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia and a long-time voting rights advocate.

It’s time to fight because OUR health is on the line. For years, Congressional Republicans have been chomping at the bit to repeal the Affordable Care Act and strip 30 million Americans of the everyday security of health insurance. If they succeed in repealing the ACA, experts estimate 43,000 Americans will die every year. Given the powerful and positive impact of the ACA in our community, a disproportionate number of these deaths will be African Americans. In fact, the Affordable Care Act is the most successful health legislation in a generation. It nearly halved the national uninsured rate and more than halved the number of African Americans without health insurance. It’s clear why this law was one of President Obama’s crowning achievements. We know it’s saving lives, so why are President Trump and Congressional Republicans hell-bent on ending it? A recent report from the American Cancer Society, a non-political group dedicated to fighting cancer and supporting patients and their families, showed that cancer deaths have declined by 25 percent since peaking in 1991. In their report, the American Cancer Society specifically notes that the ACA is driving “these shifts [that] should help to expedite progress in reducing socioeconomic disparities in cancer, as well as other health conditions.” The report also lauds the ACA for helping to decrease the ‘excess risk of cancer death’ facing African Americans. We know the real health benefit that the ACA offers to families all over the country. But, it’s also a fiscal positive. Repealing the ACA would add $29.1 trillion to the national debt by 2026. But the Republicans aren’t just planning to

run up the deficit, they are going to raise your taxes too. A GOP Senate bill and recently leaked audio from the Republican retreat confirms that Congressional Republicans are plotting to make employer-provided health insurance a taxable benefit. If you, like the majority of Americans, get health insurance through work, Republicans are plotting to give you a bigger tax bill. For a family of four earning $150,000 a year, that’s a $1,500 tax hike. We have two options before us. Allow the misguided Republican leadership to undo President Obama’s legacy, imperil and kill thousands or we fight back. We fight back for ourselves, for our families and for our community. To me, there is no option other than fighting back – too much is at stake. Step one of fighting back: Add your Senators and Congressperson’s phone numbers to your speed dial or call the switchboard at 202.224.3121. Calls are the most effective way to influence your elected officials. Remember, we work for you. If your representatives are on the right side of history, get friends and family to call theirs. Seriously, it works. Together, we can fight back and stop the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. We can and must do this because OUR lives are on the line. Congresswoman Robin Kelly represents Illinois’s 2nd Congressional district; she chairs the Congressional Black Caucus’s Health Braintrust.
