The small business owners’ best friend

Cassius Butts

June 30 - July 6, 2016

COVER STORY

SBA regional administrator sets records for lending to small businesses

By Terry Shropshire Helping small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs secure loans is more than just a job for Cassius F. Butts. It’s much more than a career or a mission. It is his ministry. The practice flows through his veins like so many red blood cells. In fact, business ownership is practically a genetic trait passed down by his parents. Butts’ father, an aerospace engineer, was an entrepreneur. His mother, also an entrepreneur, was the first recipient of the nationally accredited family child care services in the country. And Butts himself became an entrepreneur. He has worked in banking and in government under the presidencies of George W. Bush and Obama, who personally appointed him as the regional administrator for the Small Business Administrator for Region IV (the Southeast). In addition to his schooling at the famed Atlanta University Center, Butts obtained his Certificate of Grant Writing from Emory University’s Life Learning Institute. So not only is this his calling, he is armed with invaluable knowledge and experience that he can pass on to other business owners. So increasing the number of small businesses in America, particularly black and women owned business, is a concept that is tattooed into his soul. “To get involved in the political arena is mostly about giving access to capital for people who need it to get a jump start on life. That was my sweet spot,” Butts said from a spacious office high up in one of Atlanta’s skyscrapers. Because of his skill level, passion and development of strategic alliances, the Southeastern states of Kentucky, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi have reached $20 billion in loans in the last five years in Region IV, which is a record, including $1.3 billion in loans in Georgia in 2015. “The way we did that is that we have strategic alliances with entities that need our services. I made sure that one of the [priorities] was to have strategic alliances with every HBCU within Region IV and we did that,” said Butts, who has undergraduate and graduate degrees from HBCU powerhouses Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University, respectively. “We have relationships with them to

show them how to start and grow your business, and not just the students, but with the faculty, too.” The interesting thing about Butts’ career choice is that he could have gone to law school, worked at a Fortune 500 company, or in banking, or even gone into the seminary. But under the tutelage and mentorship of the legendary Maynard Jackson, Butts was able clearly see that servicing people, helping them secure loans and providing them with the tools and education needed to qualify for loans (all at no cost to the applicant) is what he was meant to do. “I always operate [on the premise] that your passion is your purpose and your purpose is your plan. Whatever you’re passionate about, that’s your purpose in life and you have to build a plan around it. Sometimes you have to step out on faith. People told me to stay in a corporate job. ‘You shouldn’t go there, you should go to law school because you can have a better career.’ I didn’t do that either you. ‘You should go back to the seminary.’ I didn’t do that either. I stayed where my purpose was and everything that I’ve done since has come to fruition. As long as you’re following your passion you will thrive.” During Butts’ tenure at the SBA, small businesses in the Southeast have witnessed a 45 percent increase in SBA backed lending, including a 26 percent increase in loans to women-owned businesses and nearly a 20 percent increase in loans to black-owned ones. Small businesses in the Southeast have been awarded $2.4 billion in federal contracts in fiscal year 2015. SBA resource partners have reached further in to communities than ever before as 222,000 entrepreneurs were counseled and trained last year alone through

strategic alliance memorandums with over 100 organizations, business chambers, associations and foundations, including such power-packed organizations as the Atlanta Business League, allowing the SBA to bring resources in to untapped markets. The success stories from business owners who benefited from SBA loans are numerous: There’s Billy Freeman Jr., owner of the Technique Concrete. Since opening five years ago, he has become one of the Southeast’s premiere construction companies in the area of concrete. He now has the bonding capacity of $12 million, and has been awarded $22 million in aggregate financing. And as a result of that, he’s the only one of his kind working on the Mercedes Benz stadium. He was awarded a $9 million contract. He’s now part of the City of Atlanta Watershed Project, the largest watershed project the city has had. There’s also Cynthia Jones, who took out an SBA loan during the Great Recession. “The president had a stimulus package and she took advantage of it. She took out a loan and purchased a building. Then she did a refinance on the building right down here in Atlanta, and [now] it’s a home that she’s converted into an office building,” Butts said. “And she is now hiring people. She does advertising and marketing for many transportation entities such as the airport, MARTA and other entities around the country.” But here’s one of the best aspects of the SBA, Butts’ testifies. “If you don’t have all your ducks lined up and you’re not ready [for a loan], we help you do it. We say come right here. And we provide a mentor, like the SCORE business center and the Women’s Center at no cost,” he advises. “With the strategic alliances in place, and the staff informed, we want the buzz to go out more and more to places that may never have heard about the SBA — from beauty salons to the corporate office — everyone should know about this and benefit from this. And if that happens, then I know that my assignment is complete,” Butts concludes.

NEWS Councilwoman Joyce Sheperd announces funding for Ft. McPherson redevelopment

www.AtlantaDailyWorld.com

ADW staff reports Atlanta City Councilmember Joyce Sheperd announced the allocation of $750,000 for technical assistance in the redevelopment of Ft. McPherson and an additional $325,000 to help in the city’s code enforcement efforts. The funds will be made available in the city of Atlanta’s FY 2017 budget which was approved Monday, June 20th. The $750,000 Funding is a result of a ULI technical assistance panel study focused on the 145 acres and ARC Livable Centers Initiative Study that was just completed for the larger Oakland City/ Fort McPherson area. Both of those exercises involved a significant amount of community input and were informed by market data. Significant technical development expertise is needed to support attracting redevelopment that isn’t substantially represented on the McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Board, and current funding is stretched with

the carrying costs of maintaining the base. Sheperd said there are many assets in place that create great opportunities (for example, two MARTA Stations, proximity to Beltline, continued economic development conversations with Mr. Perry). The technical expertise will guide the City of Atlanta to take maximum advantage and put this property to its highest and most productive use for the benefit of the surrounding communities, job creation, economic development and City of Atlanta tax rolls. Councilmember Sheperd, who is also Chair of the Code Enforcement Commission, secured an additional $325,000 funding for Code Enforcement. This funding will assist the Atlanta Police Department to significantly increase staffing within the Code Enforcement Division. This is in addition to $4,200,000 for Code Enforcement for FY17. The plan will deliver the following resources: • Eight (8) additional researcher positions • A new operations manager • A new customer service/ communications specialist The new positions will also deliver the following benefits: • Free up inspectors’ time to pursue proactive housing code enforcement • Improve title research capabilities and shorten time resolve cases • Overall coordination of back-office work flows, service level agreements (SLAs) and implementation of operational and financial strategies • Increase reporting to internal and external stakeholders regarding case status and overall activity levels •Enhanced liaison with key partners including City Council, City Departments, Fulton County and other partner organizations

Lewis victory in Congress taken from civil rights playbook By Errin Haines Whack, Associated Press Bernard Lafayette was all smiles as he watched his civil rights comrade John Lewis commandeer the floor of the U.S. House for an old-fashioned, marathon sit-in over gun legislation. Lafayette goes back with Lewis to the student sit-in protests in Nashville, Tennessee, to the early days of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the Freedom Rides, more than a halfcentury ago. Now 75 and a professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Lafayette said he was tickled but not surprised that Lewis, 76, abruptly pulled this page out of the civil rights protest playbook so many years after their student activist days _ and after quietly representing an Atlanta district in Congress for nearly 30 years. “To see him after these many years still sitting-in … that’s sort of engrained in him, that confidence that direct action can bring about some changes,” Lafayette said. Long heralded as the moral conscience of Congress, Lewis did not play by the rules when he rallied fellow Democrats and staged a 25-hour sit-in on the House floor Wednesday and Thursday. There was something about the need to persuade GOP lawmakers to act on gun control legislation that struck Lewis’ soul, leading

him to launch a rebellion hardly seen in Congress, drawing inspiration from his hero, Martin Luther King Jr. “He taught me the way of peace, the way of love,” Lewis said Thursday during a rally outside the Capitol, where he led the crowd in singing “We Shall Overcome” and vowed to stage another sit-in when Congress returns from recess. Democrats say Congress must act to stem gun violence in America in the wake of the mass shootings at an Orlando gay nightclub that killed 49 people and injured another 53. For Lewis’ student-movement cohorts, the strategy was both natural and nostalgic. “I don’t think anything like this has happened, ever,” said Eleanor Holmes Norton, also a SNCC organizer as a college student, and now a Democrat who been a non-voting delegate representing the District of Columbia in Congress since 1991. “We are in an era of direct action, but no one expects that members of Congress would have to do this. This is the kind of thing our constituents do to get our attention.” Norton said she got word of the possible protest Wednesday morning. Before long, Lewis and roughly a dozen Democrats had taken the floor, disrupting

legislative business with demands for a vote on a proposed gun bill, and refusing to leave. “We have turned a deaf ear to the blood of innocents,” Lewis exhorted at one point. “We are blind to a crisis. Where is our courage?” News outlets and social media quickly began buzzing about the events unfolding on the House floor _ the exact response needed to tug at the public’s conscience and elicit change, Lafayette said. “This is a way of showing to them the urgency of the situation. This is the way we brought about major change in the past,” Lafayette said. And as any civil rights veteran knows from experience, the fight is only beginning. “It’s not a quick thing,” said Sherrod. “But it helps to highlight the problems in a way that they haven’t been highlighted before. It would be no less than I expected from people like John Lewis.” “He is just known for this kind of activity,” Norton said. “He was willing to take the blows that come with being on the front line. John Lewis was beat up badly. Because of his nonviolent discipline, he was willing to somehow take that and not retaliate. He’s quite an amazing disciple of Martin Luther King Jr.”

Buckley for U.S. Senate campaign unleashes billboard ads

The campaign of Allen Buckley, the Libertarian Party of Georgia’s U.S. Senate candidate, has begun running billboards in Georgia. The first billboard is up on Spring Road in Smyrna, Georgia. Buckley is a resident of Smyrna. The billboard notes that Johnny Isakson has voted for over $7 trillion of debt, and makes the following statement: “Fix the finances now!” A similar billboard will run in Savannah at the busy Abercorn and Montgomery crossroads beginning in early August. It will run for 12 weeks. “The billboards will provide Georgians with information about Johnny’s voting record with respect to the national debt. The billboards will also inform the voters that the main focus of my campaign is to work to solve the nation’s enormous financial problems. “Our country faces tremendous financial challenges. Senator Isakson has voted for approximately $7 trillion of our nation’s $19 trillion of debt, as well as the Omnibus Spending Bill of 2016. According to the CBO it will produce an additional $1.5 trillion of debt over the years to come. There’s a reason why Isakson’s Conservative Review score is a 34 or an [F].” Mr. Buckley is an attorney/CPA. He previously was the Libertarian Party’s candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2004 and 2008. In 2008, Mr. Buckley garnered 128,002 votes in the General Election, forcing a run-off between Saxby Chambliss and Jim Martin.

All 3 Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles raided by agents, accounts frozen

By Terry Shropshire Another tidal wave of bad news and PR has struck the local famous restaurant Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles. Just a few months ago, the famous eatery’s downtown location failed health inspections in multiple areas. This past week, agents raided all three ‘Chicken and Waffles’ locations, shut down all operations and the state’s Department of Revenue accused Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, of theft and tax evasion. No need to go into a panic about the legendary Motown singer. Even though the restauants are named after Gladys Knight, she is not the owner of the restaurant chain and has nothing to do with its overall operations. That would be her son, Shanga Hankerson, who is the actual owner of the three Atlanta-area restaurants. Knight only lent her famous name to her son’s business like an endorsement.

State officials accused Hankerson of stealing over $650,000 in sales taxes and withholding taxes owed to the state of Georgia, according to CNN. “After penalties and interest the total exceeds $1 million,” the department said. “The department further alleges that Hankerson used these funds for personal use.” The Department of Revenue agents executed search warrants on the corporate office in Riverdale, Ga., a suburb, and “unsuccessfully attempted to serve arrest warrants on Shanga Hankerson … at his home.” Revenue officers also scooped up Hankerson’s bank accounts and three luxury vehicles. Hankerson was reportedly in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Tuesday when the raid occurred and authorities negotiated terms of his surrender to Georgia authorities. This is not the first time Hankerson has been in hot water over taxes. Agency spokesman William Gaston told CNN: “He has been in over two dozen payment plans and has defaulted on all of them. It extends to 2013. They have all been for sales and withholding tax,”After the news hit the airwaves, her PR agency told CNN: “Gladys Knight lent her name to her son’s restaurants in the Atlanta area, similar to a celebrity endorsement. Ms. Knight was not involved in any way with the operation of the restaurants and she is sure that her son and and his business partners will rectify the situation. As always, her main concern is for her family’s well-being and she is making sure the family has the guidance they need to assess the situation and move forward.”

significant tool in fulfilling our goal of creating 5,600 units of affordable housing.” “The mission of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta is to help our shareholder financial institutions meet the changing affordable housing and credit needs of the communities they serve,” said Robert Dozier, Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer for FHLBank Atlanta. “One of the ways that we achieve that mission is to connect our shareholders with initiatives like these, as they build communities, stimulate the

local economy, and improve the lives of their customers.” Eligible participants include households at or below 80 percent of the area median income. Eligible properties include single-family homes within the Atlanta BeltLine Planning Area and must serve as the primary residence. Borrowers must contribute at least $1,000 toward the purchase of a home. Interested homebuyers should contact the Atlanta BeltLine at www. AtlantaBeltLineHomes.com to begin an application.

Beyonce is flawless at Ford Field The show was an event, a spectacle. I have seen thousands of bands live, including most of the major acts that can sell out a stadium, and I have never seen anything like the Ford Field show. U2 needs to check the show out. The cube beats the Pop Mart arch in spades. During the show, Beyoncé mentioned the trip she took with her family earlier in the day to the Motown museum and remarked that the people in Detroit have been privileged to have been witness to so much great talent. Indeed they are.

By Paul Warner Now that I’m older, I get a chance to see artists grow from the start of their careers, and follow them through the highs and lows of those careers. With Beyoncé Knowles, it’s been almost all highs. Last week at Ford Field in downtown Detroit, I got to see her make history. Beyoncé became the only solo African American artist to sell out a US stadium tour. She performed to 42,000 people in an indoor stadium in Detroit, the largest crowd I have ever seen an African American solo artist draw. Prince never toured stadiums, and Michael Jackson only toured stadiums in Europe, not the States. It’s an incredible achievement for any performer, but to see an African American woman play to so many people was emotional. The crowd was probably 70 percent African American women. They paid up to $250 dollars for tickets, and packed the bars and restaurants in downtown Detroit before and after the show. It’s a feat that any performer would want to pull off, but for a female, and an African American female at that, it’s even more extraordinary. In an industry and world where women are warned that it’s not if they will be sexually harassed, but when they will be sexually harassed, it’s a measurable triumph for the female spirit. I first saw her perform with Destiny’s Child when they were still considered an R & B act, before they “crossed over.” It was a radio show (several pop and R&B acts) back around the turn of the century, at a suburban arena, that didn’t sell out. They headlined the bill, and there was enough stage attitude to become a headliner, but honestly I doubt if anyone in the arena that day could see that the lead singer in the group would go on to become one of the biggest solo acts of all time. The next time I saw Beyoncé was at her first official solo show at an anniversary for one of the big three in a suburb of Detroit. The reason why this is a first-person story is because I can’t give an unbiased review of Beyoncé due to the fact that she once approved me to work for her as her photographer for her record company during her first solo outing, which included Destiny’s Child, and her sister, Solange. I was a

ADW | 6

stand-in for another photographer friend, who passed the job to me. It was my understanding that after finding out that I worked with Prince that she said, “Well, if he can work for Prince, he can work with me.” With the gig, I got a chance to knock off a professional bucket list item. To work a show in a documentary style, backstage, and in front of

‘Oh say can you see,’ TV judge performing national anthem the stage, from beginning to end. I was amazed to see that she was running the show herself, and she was only 21 at the time. When her atthe-time boyfriend (and future husband) Jay Z joined her onstage in front of 65,000 people, it would be one of the first times they performed together in public. From her solo start in a Detroit suburb where she performed in front of 65, 000 people, to last Tuesday at Ford Field in front of 42, 000 paying fans (her first solo show was free of charge), she came full Detroit circle. Just about 50 feet in front of me stood a huge cube, reminiscent of the Borg cube from the science fiction TV series, “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” The Borg’s mission was to assimilate all life forms they encountered into their collective unit. It was hard not to look at that cube (which absorbed images of Beyoncé and her family and acted as a stage for dancers and opened up to reveal circus type performers dangling from on high) and not think that the audience was not being assimilated into the Beyoncé collective. As soon as I saw the cube, which must have been nearly seven stories tall, that was my first thought; “We are being assimilated. The entire Southeastern Michigan area is being assimilated.”

Judge Lauren Lake’s performance of the “Star Spangle Banner” in Atlanta on June 24 before the Braves took on the New York Mets left fans mesmerized. Who knew she was musically gifted. But when Lake’s not at Turner Field belting out the national anthem, television viewers can catch her Monday through Friday as she serves as judge of the Emmy nominated, nationally syndicated court show Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court. Lake offers her legal expertise and nononsense perspective on life and love to litigants seeking answers to paternity questions. Not only is Judge Lake a powerful voice in the courtroom, she is also an accomplished professional vocalist. Judge Lake began singing professionally in her hometown of Detroit, to help pay her way through law school. She’s sung background and toured with platinum selling artists like P.Diddy, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and JT Taylor, the former lead singer of Kool and the Gang. When she isn’t empowering families in the courtroom, she traveling the country as a motivational speaker, spreading her inspiring message on how to live life limitlessly. Lake, a seasoned singer/songwriter and performer, recently wrote and coproduced her latest song the Limitless Anthem, which encourages people to step off their cliffs of complacency and free fall into possibility. The Limitless

Anthem is the theme song for the new LaurenLake.com website, which will launch alongside the Season 4 premiere of Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court in September 2016.

LIFESTYLE New bike share program debuts downtown Atlanta Registration opens for 2nd

June 30 - July 6, 2016

www.AtlantaDailyWorld.com

Starting this summer, Atlanta will join many cities across the world – from New York City to Paris – in launching its own bike-share system. In just a few weeks, Atlanta’s first bike-share system will debut downtown, with 100 bikes at 10 stations, growing to 500 bikes by end of year. Owned and operated by Cyclehop, the bike-share program will allow Atlantans to rent a bike from any station. Atlantans can use the bikes as they wish, riding to and from work, to other modes of transportation such as Marta and for leisure. To take a bike, Atlantans will simply go to one of the stations, pay a small fee to rent the bike and drop it off at any of the other stations around the city when finished. “We really want Atlantans to have input on where the bike-share stations expand to next around the city,” says Rebecca Serna, executive director of Atlanta Bicycle Coalition. “But the challenge is also creating interest in a type of public transportation that many people have never experienced. The survey is also meant to get

residents thinking about the various ways they could use a bike-share program, from grabbing a bite to eat to using it in combination with other modes of transportation to easily travel all around the city.” Looking toward the expansion of the bicycles-for-rent network of stations, Atlantans are invited to share their opinions about the neighborhoods where they would like to see new locations. The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, City of Atlanta and CycleHop are calling on all Atlantans to take a short survey via text: For the first month, Atlanta Bicycle Coalition will randomly select one survey participant each week to receive a $50 gift card. One lucky survey participant will win a grand prize: a brand new kid’s bike! When the bike share system expands, in what neighborhood do you want to see bike share stations? Take a short survey by texting the name of the neighborhood to 678647- 7176. For more information on Atlanta’s soon-to-debut bike-share program, visit www.atlantabicycleshare.com

Why Warren should be Hillary’s VP with a credibility earned by her willingness to take the side of working families against powerful interests and the Washington establishment. She’s already demonstrated the fire needed to call out Donald Trump and the party that is about to nominate him. Warren exemplifies Clinton’s goal to be a “progressive with results.” She had to take on the banking lobby, Obama’s treasury secretary, entrenched regulators, and Republican and more than a few Democratic members of Congress to get the CFPB enshrined in law. Already that agency has helped consumers recover more than $10 billion from credit card companies and banking institutions that had defrauded them. If she is on the ticket and helping to lead the administration, voters can be confident that Wall Street bankers will finally be held accountable. Warren has been a leader in the effort to expand Social Security, now an emerging consensus in the Democratic Party. She led the effort to reduce student debt from college. She’s been a strong supporter of lifting the minimum wage and creating a floor under workers. She has less experience in international affairs and national security. But what is required there is intelligence and judgment. No one doubts she has the intelligence to learn what is at stake in any crisis. She exhibits the judgment — and a skepticism about foreign military adventures — that is badly needed in any White House. And, of course, she’s already shown she will call them as she sees them, ensuring that Clinton would get her best informed and unvarnished opinion, no matter who is lined up on the other side. Clinton, like most presidential candidates, will make her choice on the basis of political judgment, extensive vetting and personal affinity. She will want to choose someone who will add strength to the ticket, and to the administration if elected, and have her confidence. She should not let the fact that Warren is female get in the way of giving her strong consideration.

Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic Party nominee for president, is now sorting out her pick for her running mate and potential vice president. She’s launched the “search,” the traditional and often irritating public surfacing of various possibilities, paying respect to different constituencies and different personalities, before settling on a choice. One possibility being floated clearly merits serious consideration. Consider the resume: Raised in a family struggling to get by, this prospect started working while still in high school, went to college on a debate scholarship, graduated from law school, and became a Harvard Law professor and expert on bankruptcy law, particularly as it relates to how the financial industry preys on families in crisis. This person wrote path-breaking books on the economic pressures on working families, then chaired the Congressional Oversight Panel monitoring the federal bailout of the U.S. banking system and created the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), ushering it from conception to passage into law. Then elected as U.S. senator, immediately gaining a national reputation as a progressive leader willing to take on the big banks and stand up for working people, this leader has demonstrated a tough mind, a full heart, a strong will and a gift for inspiring people. What’s not to like? Sen. Elizabeth Warren is, of course, a woman. Some suggest it’s impossible to have two women lead the party’s ticket. But haven’t we gone far beyond that? We’ve had two men lead parties forever, so there’s no tradition of gender balance. Hillary Clinton should be looking for the strongest candidate. And on that criterion, Warren is hard to beat. Warren would help Clinton heal the divisions of the primaries. She appeals to the Sanders wing of the party, to independents and the young. Indeed, before Sanders announced, progressives organized across the country to urge Warren to run. She speaks

John McCain absurdty: Blaming President Obama for Orlando The cretin who took an assault weapon into Pulse, an Orlando nightclub, on “salsa night” is beneath contempt. Was his target the LBGTQ community, Latinos, or simply human beings? It is somewhat reductive to simply describe Pulse as a “gay club.” It catered to the LBGTQ communities and allies. Some of those who were massacred were not gay. They just wanted to dance. In the wake of the massacre of 49 people, and the injury of another 53, the networks have offered sunup to sundown coverage. Analysis and opinions have been more than plentiful. Some of the most disgraceful comments came from Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), who blames President Obama for the massacre in Orlando. To be sure the Senator quickly retracted his words and said that he “misspoke.” But he started out by saying that he held President Obama “directly responsible” for the massacre in Florida. He explained that, because President Obama pulled U.S. troops out of Iraq, he created the vacuum that ISIS came to fill. McCain was harsh in his excoriation of President Obama, and his harshness was misplaced when it was issued, on the same day that President Obama visited Orlando to meet with the families of those murdered. If you look into a dictionary under “sore loser” you will find a photograph of Arizona Senator John McCain. He still has not recovered from the whipping he took when then-Senator Barack Obama beat him for the presidency. While he can only blame himself, his poorly executed campaign, and his poor choices (Sarah Palin, anyone?), he is far more comfortable venting against President Obama than he is exploring his own failures. Florida’s Republican Governor Rick Scott is another politician who has made unfortunately inappropriate statements.

Deflecting questions about assault weapons, he says he prefers to talk about eliminating ISIS. He behaves as if legislators have only a one-track mind. While it is appropriate to talk about managing ISIS, it is also appropriate to talk about the easy access that anybody has to assault weapons. If you are on the no-fly list, the adage goes, you ought to be on the no-buy list, too. Not that it helps as much as it should – there are too many ways to buy guns, ammunition, and body armor legally and under the table. It does not erode anyone’s second amendment rights to restrict their right to assault weapons. One does not need a automatic weapon and thousands of rounds of ammunition to protect oneself or, for that matter, to “hunt.” Whenever those NRA folks start talking about hunting, though, I really want to know what (who) it is they want to hunt. . President Barack Obama has had to take on the role of Empathizer-in-Chief several times during his presidency. In the last year, he has had to deal with the shootings at Emanuel AME Church (June 2015, 9 casualties), at the Chattanooga Recruiting Center (July 2015, 4 casualties), Roseburg Community College (October 2015, 10 casualties), the San Bernardino Community Center (December 2015, 14 casualties), and now the tragedy in Orlando. In the wake of a tragedy, our nation’s leaders ought to follow our president’s leadership in offering empathy. We ought also look at ways to prevent further tragedy. Banning assault weapons is one way to offer some solutions, and some Democrats have attempted to deal with that, despite resistance. Loose lips are inappropriate in the wake of this tragedy.
