Black Women’s Expo lands in Atlanta for 1st time
September 22-28, 2016
September 22-28, 2016
COVER STORY
Black Women’s Expo features top women luminaries and leaders in America
By Terry Shropshire Fasten your seatbelts, Atlanta, and get ready to be empowered and enlightened. The nation’s longestrunning exposition of its kind, The Black Women’s Expo, is finally going to grace Atlanta for the very first time, and African American women in the Capital of the New South couldn’t be more excited. Now in its 22nd year, The Chicago-based Black Women’s is going to present Atlantans with a plethora of nationally renowned speakers and celebrities, top musical artists and a multiplicity of multinational and small corporations seeking to engage with the attendees at the Georgia World Congress Center from Oct. 7 to Oct. 9. Operating from the theme #SheMatters, the BWe will be buoyed and bolstered many of the city’s and nation’s most prominent savants, civic personalities and entertainers who will discuss the vast array of issues pertinent to the African American female experience, such as the criminal justice system, police brutality, jobs, hair, fashion, breast cancer, wealth creation, buying a home, the music and Hollywood establishment and much more. The Black Women’s Expo’s founder and visionary, Merry Green, succinctly summarized why the BWe braintrust decided to pack up the extravaganza and take the three-day experiential exposition on the road and make its debut in the ATL. “Why wouldn’t we want to be in Atlanta? We’ve always wanted to be in Atlanta. It’s one of the top markets for African American women and entrepreneurs and business owners,” said Green, herself a business owner and the founder of MGPG Enterprises. “We know how progressive and how dynamic Atlanta is. We have come down there for the past year and visited with a number of business owners and consultants. And I am truly amazed at the expertise that is there all over the market. People are really, really excited that we were coming to bring them the show.” Green provided a sneak peek of what the tens of thousands of attendees can expect when they walk through the doors of the GWCC beginning Oct. 7.

“The exhibition is made up of three components: one is the exhibit floor, where you will see the corporate partners selling everything and engaging the attendees. There is the entertainment stage, where both local and national entertainers [will perform], and where you will have fashion shows, hair shows, and dance. Every imaginable form of entertainment will be on that stage throughout the three days. And then you will have our seminars and our workshops, where we bring in local and national experts to talk about the issues.”
And that’s just the beginning, Green said. “We will recognize 10 Atlanta women with our Phenomenal Women Award that will be held on Friday night at the GWCC, and where we will recognize women in a number of categories, such as community service and corporate success and notfor-profit and entrepreneurs.” Among the many seminars will be such enthralling
workshops as: How to Become a Billionaire with bestselling author Dennis Kimbro; Talk of Black Hollywood with actresses Elise Neal, Kim Coles and Darrin Henson; Dating in the City with Stacii Jae Johnson; discussions about breast cancer with Susan G. Komen; buying a home seminar with PNC Bank; a BWe Hair Explosion with Derek J and Lady Emmy; singing with Keke Wyatt; an evening with Kindred Family Soul; a BWe Gospel Praise Break, and so much more. Green advises attendees to stay sharp and keep up with the addition of more celebs, personalities and events by visiting The Black Women’s Expo’s website. The former television and radio executive — who was the first African American Assistant Program Director for the ABC network affiliate in Rochester, N.Y. — talked about how the BWe was founded. “It was an opportunity for African Americans to have a forum of their own, especially black women and our whole families, our children, our husbands, the men in our lives. We deal with issues that we are confronted with on a daily basis. And there were issues that weren’t being discussed anymore in black radio.” At the time corporate sponsors were trying to out jockey each other to be a part of this growing phenomenon in the Second City, but the BWe is largely an opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs and startup business owners to launch and expand their businesses. “We were able to open it up to small business vendors to be a part of the expo and to exhibit their products and services,” Green said. “And it was the first time they were able to exhibit their products. And for many of them, it was a way for them to jumpstart their businesses.” And while many other annual black expos became casualties to time, fickle taste and an often volatile market, BWe remained steady. “One of the key components is that we have remained consistent, that we know how to market the product. We know how to bring in corporate sponsors and give them all the elements that we say. One of the things that you must do is do what you say. And we do. And so our corporate sponsors are always pleased. They are getting exactly what we indicated, and that is to be a part of the show.” Even after 22 years, Green and her team are still surprised by the vast reach, influence and cultural cache the BWe has accrued over the years. “We are known around the country. People [everywhere] seem to know about the Black Women’s Expo, and that surprises me everyday … that they are aware of our show,” she said, recalling a Nielsen survey conducted on the expo two years ago. “They were there for two days and they did a survey of our attendees. We were amazed — and they were amazed – that our attendees were coming from 14 different states and [approximately] 140 ZIP Codes. People were coming from as far away as Florida and New York, but as well as Ohio and Indiana. They knew about it and been to the expo multiple times. There is a very powerful reason why people keep returning and bringing others with them to be a part of the BWe experience. “The BWe has made an impact. When they come, they come with family, they come with girlfriends every year. Our vendors also come from around the country. People come to be empowered. They come to be enlightened. They come to discuss the issues that impact us in our everyday lives and to be uplifted,” concludes Green.

Mayor Kasim Reed and The Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities undertake Urban Resilience Strategy Mayor Kasim Reed was joined by 100 Resilient Cities – Pioneered by Rockefeller Foundation president Michael Berkowitz for the City of Atlanta’s first agenda-setting workshop aimed at identifying priorities for the City’s urban resilience strategy. Mayor Reed welcomed more than 100 government, business, academic and civic community stakeholders who have committed to take an active role in the strategic planning process and addressing local challenges such as aging infrastructure, social inequality and cyber security. “Today’s kickoff workshop signifies that the City of Atlanta is fully committed to working with the 100 Resilient Cities Network to address local challenges,” said Mayor Reed. “To become truly resilient, we must continue to execute our existing programs, as well as create more socially-responsible policies which will protect the environment, advance our infrastructure and drive our economy. I am gratified to know that more than 100 representatives will help us meet the charge to become more resilient and help ensure the city is stronger and more prepared for generations to come.” In May 2016, the City of Atlanta was chosen as one of the 100 Resilient Cities from more than 325 applicants, spanning more than 90 countries across six continents, and was selected on the basis of the city’s willingness, ability, and need to become resilient in the face of future challenges. “We are proud to host this workshop today and count ourselves among a group of cities leading in resiliencebuilding efforts,” said Stephanie Stuckey Benfield, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability. “Atlanta’s commitment to resilience planning will set a global example.” “Atlanta is helping to fuel global momentum around
building urban resilience and leading by example,” said 100RC president Michael Berkowitz. “The agenda-setting workshop helped clarify the city’s vulnerabilities, surfaced innovative
City Councilmember Yolanda Adrean and APD add security cameras in Council District 8
Atlanta City Councilmember Yolanda Adrean is pleased to announce that the Atlanta City Council has approved spending up to $300,000 to have the Atlanta Police Foundation install at least 23 additional closed-circuit cameras in Council District 8. This brings the total investment in the Master Plan to nearly $2.7 million. Councilmember Adrean is partnering with the Atlanta Police Department, Atlanta Police Foundation, Department of Parks and Recreation as well as District 8 neighborhoods, residences, and businesses to make the growing network of cameras possible. The cameras are being installed as part of the District 8 Public Safety Master Plan, the first such plan of its kind in the city. The security cameras as part of Operation Shield are integrated into the city’s sophisticated Loudermilk Video Integration Center, where police currently monitor images from more than 7,500 high-tech cameras throughout the city. “We want to provide Atlanta Police Officers with the best technological resources available to help them solve crime,
and I believe that having these cameras in place will help them do just that,” said Adrean. “This innovative, state of the art and rapidly developing technology platform will soon be one of the most robust and sophisticated video surveillance systems in the World,” said Dave Wilkinson, President, and CEO of the Atlanta Police Foundation. “Adding security cameras in residential neighborhoods creates a strong deterrent against crime and provides the APD with much needed situational awareness during an incident. Through the Operation Shield Program residents now have the opportunity to participate in this cutting edge security plan and personally, play a part in addressing crime in their neighborhood.” Through the existing camera network, the Atlanta Police has been able to use the footage to solve crimes. For example, on Wednesday, Atlanta Police were able to apprehend three robbery suspects by using footage from APD’s Video Integration Unit. Brandon Antoine Anderson, Emory Breynekia Hunter, and Kareasha Washington are accused of using a gun to rob individuals walking or jogging with cellphones Tuesday in the 200 block of Blackland Road in northwest Atlanta and on Peachtree Battle Trail in Buckhead. Residents are looking forward to the additional security cameras. “We are excited about them,” said Taryn Chilivis Bowman, president of the Mt. Paran-Northside Citizens Association. “The camera network is phenomenal, and Councilwoman Adrean’s public safety plan has been amazingly effective.” District 8 resident Allyson Delius commented on the importance of the additional security measures by stating “the cameras and LRPs are an important policing tool that we, as residents should expect in a world class public safety system, in addition to an increase in police presence as our city continues to grow.”
thinking, and gave us a blueprint for engaging partners from across city sectors to bring Atlanta the tools and resources it needs to become more resilient.” As part of the resilience strategy, Mayor Reed will soon appoint the city’s first-ever Chief Resilience Officer. Atlanta’s CRO will lead the city’s resilience-building efforts and continue to engage city stakeholders, resilience experts and 100RC staff in drafting a comprehensive resilience strategy for the city. The City of Atlanta is currently working on a number of resilience projects including: • Converting the former Bellwood Quarry into a 30-day water supply for residents and businesses. • Proposing a special purpose local option sales tax for transportation to generate approximately $300 million over a five-year period to fund significant and expansive transportation projects citywide. • Hiring the first-ever urban agriculture director who works to bring local, healthy food within a half-mile of 75 percent of all Atlanta residents by year 2020. • Implementing the Renew Atlanta bond program to conduct $250 million of infrastructure improvements. • Adopting an affordable-housing ordinance that will reserve a percentage of housing throughout the City and on the Atlanta BeltLine for working families. The City of Atlanta will receive technical support and resources to develop and implement its resilience strategy which is expected to be completed by next year.

The festival will also include Hispanifest, live entertainments, arts and craft vendors, food vendors, and even a children’s area. “It’s always a pleasure to create events that can bring together a diverse community. Special events like Bridgefest allows a glimpse into the heart of the City of Stockbridge. We get the opportunity to strengthen community support and make memories that last a lifetime,” says CieCie Wilson McGhee, City of Stockbridge Events
Department Manager. Bridgefest will be featuring acts from several different performers of all genres. Vintage Vixens is a 60’s and 70’s all-female cover band with a hippy vibe. Groovy and funky style, the band covers hits from Motown to rock and pop. Another performer is the band Hero, with their soul and electric energy, they’re made up of four blood brothers who all have different musical talents. Young guitar picker and crooner, Trenton Ewing, is a country star in the making and definitely an act to see. Other live entertainment Bridgefest will be featuring include The 911 Band playing R&B, The Beeze Kings with the blues, Casuell and the Soul Kitchen on soul, and Jeff Sparks playing rock. “As the City makes preparations to host our annual BridgeFest event on September 24th, we are very excited to introduce HispaniFest as a new element to the festivities. This collaboration will encourage the involvement of our Hispanic neighbors and friends and will provide an opportunity to share in, and learn more about, their culture. BridgeFest offers a fun-filled day in downtown Stockbridge for people of all ages and cultures – and we look forward to having everyone enjoy our City. We’ll see you at the Bridge.” -Stockbridge City Manager Michael C. Harris This year The City of Stockbridge teamed up with The Georgia National Hispanic Heritage Alliance to feature “Hispanifest;” celebrating the wonderful and diverse traditional cultures of Georgia’s Hispanic communities. There will also be traditional
Hispanic entertainment such as dancers for the audience to enjoy with the opportunity to learn these dances. Adding Hispanifest puts a twist on the traditional Bridgefest festival because it allows the community to learn more about Latin cultures in our neighborhoods. “It’s an honor that the City of Stockbridge partnered up with the GNHHA in an effort to unify our diverse communities through HispaniFest; a multicultural event. It will create a welcoming atmosphere for all of us to come together, have fun, and the same time give back, educate, and inspire our future generation.” -Rocio Camacho, Georgia National Hispanic Heritage Alliance The City of Stockbridge and Cross Road Christian Church will also be hosting the free community health fair at The Ted Strickland Community Center which will allow the public access to consult with some of the best services in the industry. Some services include Eagle’s Wing Health Care Services, Miracle Ear for hearing screenings, Walmart Vision center, CVS for flu shots, Piedmont Henry Hospital on oncology, and much more. Arts and Craft vendors will be showcasing their crafty and aesthetic pieces for the crowd to purchase. Delicious food vendors of all sorts will be available on site for everyone’s different tastes. And of course, the children’s area will have activities such as face painting, arts and crafts, and even rides. This is a free event that you don’t want to miss! ENTERTAINMENT ‘MOSAIC’ screening showcases up-and-coming director’s first feature film

ADW reports Atlanta’s top tiered women in film and entertainment are rallying behind content creator, Devyne Johnson of Artefakets Entertainment as she kicked off a seven-city tour of her company’s first feature film, MOSAIC on Sept. 19 with a private VIP screening attended by media and special guests. Following the screening, Johnson lead a panel discussion about the future of independent filmmakers in the industry. Joining the discussion was Cheryl Jenkins, President of WIFTA, Lorraine CochranJohnson, General Manager of Atlanta Daily World, and DeEtta West of UPtv. With the film industry seeking more diversity, panelists offered insider secrets to success in the booming film and television industry. During the dynamic panel discussion, Johnson discussed the dynamics of the film and television industry where key decisions are often made by male influencers. But it was Devyne Johnson, an Atlanta-based content creator who financed the project, hired key department heads and who directed the feature film, MOSAIC. Johnson took this route largely to defy the norms of industry methodology and represented the audacity of unknown, yet deserving artists. “As a content creator, I’m answerable to my conscious of creativity. Self-financing and self-distribution are bold decisions,
but I believe wholeheartedly in my dreams. I had to honor my art by ensuring its place in the world, and I owed it to the other artisans who contributed to MOSAIC to showcase their talent as well.” Both Jenkins and West have extensive backgrounds in the entertainment industry while Cochran offers the perspective of a media executive with over 15 years of experience in print media, film production and marketing.
Best described as “War Room” meets “August: Osage County,” “MOSAIC” is a film about a family unaware of destructive patterns that put them on a collision course to deal with these issues. The story’s main character, Ruth Anderson, is an ambitious, divorced mother with misplaced priorities and shattered relationships with her immediate family. Hardly an uncommon concern for families, Johnson’s storytelling will shed light on themes relatable to all while offering moments of key reflection that presents healing and hope for families yearning for healthy functionality at its core. Following its kick-off in Atlanta, MOSAIC will make stops in Charlotte, Raleigh, D.C., Nashville, Chicago and L.A. Johnson, whose background is in costume design is credited for working on films and television shows such as “Atlanta,” “Stranger Things,” “Halt & Catch Fire” and the Ride Along franchise. She has worked with producers such as Donald Glover, Shawn Levy, Will Packer, Rob Hardy, Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. In January 2016, Johnson and her production team were commissioned to create, produce and direct a short film, What Kings are Made Of for the TV series, “Live@9:30.” The film is slated to air nationally this fall and will coincide with MOSAIC’s release. Tickets are available at http://www.MosaicMovie.com
NAACP and Chance the Rapper ‘Stay Woke & Vote’ tours Georgia
The Georgia NAACP joined forces with the NAACP National Youth & College Division and Chance the Rapper this fall to register thousands of concert-goers to vote as part of the organization’s #staywokeandvote campaign. The tour which visited students at selected colleges and university campuses included: Savannah State University, Georgia State University, Interdenominational Theological Center, Spelman College, and Kennesaw State University. NAACP College Chapter members were available to help first-time voters register and vote in the Nov. 8 election. “From the ballot box to the board room, the NAACP has always worked to ensure every eligible voter has unfettered access to participate in the search for the common good,” said Francys Johnson, president of the GA NAACP.
“This voter empowerment campaign is part of our ongoing post-Shelby election administration monitoring and voter empowerment program in Georgia,” Johnson said. “The NAACP will mortgage every asset we have to defend the unfettered access to the ballot. It was paid for with the blood, sweat, and tears of our ancestors – voting is sacred.” “Chance the Rapper is an artist whose music praises and lifts up our common humanity, and whose call for action speaks to the yearning of this moment,” said Cornell William Brooks, President and CEO of the NAACP. “This year, more than it has in a generation; we must use the power of our voices and our votes and exercise our sacred right to vote.” A native of Chicago, Chancellor Bennett has emerged as a brilliant performer who has united artists through poetry and soul. Outside the studio, the self-made artist has united a collective of Hip-Hop’s stars to create his latest album, Coloring Book. “Voting and becoming knowledgeable about this year’s upcoming presidential election is imperative. With a great deal of help from the NAACP, I have been able to provide this awesome opportunity for people to sign up and make the pledge to vote at a few of my upcoming shows,” Bennett said. “This is super important to me because I want my fans to know that their voices matter and that their vote counts now more than ever.” In the era of the #BlackLivesMatter Movement, where police brutality, criminal justice, and voting rights issues are at the forefront of national conversations, music provides a unique opportunity to create a world for all people thrive if we are committed to becoming active, informed, and vocal citizens. The NAACP Youth and College Division intends to bring the intersection of arts and activism to inspire civic action for a new generation.

Consumers win protections in case against CashCall The fight for fair lending got a big boost on recently when a federal court rejected a payday loan collector’s attempt to evade consumer laws. The decision against CashCall, a California-based online payday and installment lender, upheld the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) authority to investigate and fine lenders for unfair, abusive or deceptive practices. The court ruling is a key step in a legal battle that began nearly three years ago. In December 2013 and for the first time, CFPB sued to secure consumer refunds of illegally collected money. According to the filing, “defendants engaged in unfair, deceptive and abusive practices, including illegally debiting consumer checking accounts for loans that were void.” CFPB charged that California-based CashCall, its subsidiary WS Funding LLC, affiliate Delbert Services Corporation, a Nevada collection agency were all the same ownership. Loans ranging from $850$10,000 were sold with upfront fees, lengthy repayment terms and interest rates as high as 343 percent. CFPB charged that these loan terms violated state laws in at least 16 states that had in place licensing requirements, interest rate caps – or both. As early as 2009, CashCall also partnered with Western Sky Financial, another company, to claim that tribal law rather than state law applied to their loans. Readers may recall a series of television ads promoting Western Sky’s quick and easy loans. The federal court disagreed and dismissed challenging arguments, finding CashCall to be the true lender. The relationship with Western Sky was tantamount to a “renta-bank” scheme. In part the ruling stated affected states “have expressed a fundamental public policy in protecting its citizens.” CFPB’s late summer court victory is similar to another recent enforcement action by the Maryland Commissioner of Financial Regulation. In that state’s court, CashCall was found to be a lender that tried to evade state usury limits by using the rent-a-bank scheme.

Today, there are 90 million people who live in the District of Columbia and 14 states where excessively-priced payday loans are not allowed. Collectively, these states save more than $2 billion a year that would otherwise be spent on payday loan fees. That’s a good thing for consumers. Consumer advocates are celebrating this important victory. It is one that upholds the importance of strong state laws and effective enforcement. “This important ruling validates the right of states to protect their citizens from predatory loans, whether they are made online or at a storefront,” noted Diane Standaert, director of state policy and an executive vice president with the Center for Responsible Lending. “It reinforces the common sense concept that people should not be harassed for debts they do not owe. Both states and the CFPB must continue to enact protections against unfair lending and collection practices.” The court ruling also comes when the deadline for public comment on payday lending approaches. CFPB will accept comments from citizens and organizations that have concerns about payday and highcost, small-dollar loans. An online portal can accept comments at stoppaydaypredators. org/crl/. The deadline for public comment is Oct. 7. If anyone doubts how these small-dollar loans cause so much financial harm, consider these facts: All too often across the country, payday storefronts ply their trade in Black and Latino neighborhoods. The noticeable presence of payday lenders in our communities indicate that our people are being targeted to become financial victims. I would challenge anyone to identify areas dominated by high-income consumers have a comparable number of payday stores. Starting now, choose not to become a payday victim.
Trump supporters think they’re on a reality show There is something that I have found particularly odd in this election season and there have been many things that have been odd. There have been consistent media reports of interviews with supporters of Republican nominee Donald Trump that indicate that many of them do not take seriously his various pronouncements. Trump supporters have been reported making comments—after being confronted with Trump’s declarations, such as his call to build wall on the border with Mexico and his suggestion to block Muslims from entering the USA — that they do not believe that Trump really means this, nevertheless, they will vote for him. What does one make of people discounting the assertions of a candidate, particularly provocative assertions I might add, and yet supporting him? Do these supporters think that this is a large-scale reality show? Here is my theory. Trump supporters are divided into two overlapping — and overwhelmingly white — groups. There are the right-wing irrationalists who are ideologically committed to backing virtually each and every word of their candidate. They see Trump as the champion of their revengeseeking politics, hoping to “make America white again.” The second group is made up of people who are scared to death and want to shake things up, yet shake things up in a particular way. They don’t want a woman to be elected president and they don’t want what they perceive to be “more of the same.”
Atlanta Daily World
They are scared of the changing demographics of the United States; they’re scared about their economic precariousness; they’re scared about a world that they cannot understand, let alone control. Trump represents the equivalent of rolling the dice and hoping that they don’t come up “snake eyes.” This second group is living in a world of self-deception. There is no reason for anyone to disbelieve Trump. At a minimum his rhetoric is inflammatory and erratic. If these supporters do not believe that Trump will actually do what he suggests that he will do, what do they think that he will do? It appears that they do not care, as long as it is different from what these supporters are currently experiencing. Actually, I do not believe that this supposed lack of concern with what Trump will do (if elected) is innocent and frivolous. Trump is asserting a nightmare. There is nothing hopeful, inclusive, democratic or just in what he is arguing. Nothing that he is arguing is neutral, bipartisan or post-partisan. His arguments all flow from his basic notion that white America is allegedly suffering at the hands of minorities, liberals, the rest of the world, etc. To put it another way, these supporters don’t just want to shake things up. They want to shake things up in a manner that they believe gives them a leg up on the rest of the world. It is not just the candidate who is dangerous. The movement backing him is even more frightening.
