Georgians say ‘NoDeal’ to state school TAKEOVER

Gladys Knight’s son calls mom mentally unfit

COVER STORY

Growing number of Georgians oppose the Governor’s Opportunity School District School District amendment. “We, the State Board of Education, resolve that we support the Opportunity School District Amendment in order to improve the education of Georgia students trapped in failing schools,” reads the resolution, which was signed by the board’s 12 members. Louis Elrod, campaign manager for Keep Georgia Schools Local, said this in opposition to the OSD and the State Board of Education: “The State Board of Education, a board comprised completely of political appointees, acted against the interest of parents across the state. By passing the governor’s school takeover resolution, the State Board of Education is telling Georgia parents, students and teachers that they support gutting local control of our schools. The school takeover is a power grab that would silence parents by handing over our public schools to an unelected political appointee. The appointee could fire teachers without cause, close schools or give schools to out-of-state, for-profit corporations — all while taking $13 million from school budgets for ‘administrative operations.’ “The worst part is that there’s no appeals process for parents or community members,” he added. “All decisions made by the governor’s appointee would be final.”

By Terry Shropshire As the November election approaches, the opposition to Gov. Nathan Deal’s proposed Opportunity School District is growing stronger and more resolute. A resolution passed earlier this year to put the proposal for the state to take over failing schools on the ballot. If voters approve, the state will have the power to control the schools that are deemed to be under-performing. A school is considered failing if it scores less than 60 three years in a row on the state’s school performance index, called the College and Career Ready Performance Index. As of this year, 127 schools across the state would qualify, with DeKalb County, a suburb of Atlanta, reportedly leading with the most schools that are in peril. Nearly 68,000 students are currently enrolled in schools the state deems as failing, according to the OSD proposal At present, several Georgians have filed a classaction lawsuit against Gov. Nathan Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Sec. of State Brian Kemp over the language used in the Amendment 1 “Opportunity School District” ballot question. Complainants on the case are accusing the trio of obfuscating, or deliberately misleading the public. The complaint alleges that the language is “so misleading and deceptive that it violates the due process and voting rights of all Georgia voters.” Kimberly Brooks, a mother of three who has a post-graduate degrees from Clark Atlanta and Georgia State, joined the lawsuit because she is deeply concerned about local rights being stripped away, particularly as she has three children who attended a school district that would be impacted by the implementation of the OSD. “The electoral process is essential to democracy. Specifically, it ensures that all voices are heard. In contrast, I believe Amendment 1 would take away our voice as parents and teachers and community members. I am deeply concerned by any piece of legislation that infringes upon my rights in that way,” she says.

“As a parent, I ask myself this: Why does a governing body that already has power to control public schools need more power and more money and need me to be silenced? There is a total lack of transparency in how the Opportunity School District will actually improve education, and the metrics used to determine which schools are ‘failing’ are questionable at best,” Brooks continued. “The authority of the governor’s office to appoint an unaccountable superintendent who can fire teachers without cause is also concerning. Taxpayers will pay for the governor’s office to experiment on Georgia schools and silence parents and teachers during the process.” Dr. Melissa Ladd, who obtained her masters in reading instruction and a doctorate in school improvement has done extensive research regarding strategies to close the achievement gap for public school students living in poverty, and proposes an alternative to OSD. “We know what works. Community schools work. Solutions that address chronic poverty and meeting students’ basic needs work. State takeover does not work. Similar programs have failed in every other state they have been tried. “Children are not mere products, created by a corporation, but rather created by God. As such, the decisions made about their future should involve parents, an elected board, and the community. Decisions made in geographic locations unknown to a CEO should not be allowed when dealing with God’s children.” The lawsuit faces very stiff and powerful opposition. The Georgia State Board of Education passed a resolution at its monthly meeting supporting Gov. Nathan Deal’s proposed Opportunity

“What they want is the money, control of those dollars, control of those contracts” -Rev. Timothy McDonald A growing number of local school boards are voicing their concerns about Gov. Deal’s plan. More than two-dozen boards, even the ones without failing schools, officially oppose the OSD initiative. Whether their stance can influence voters at the polls remains to be seen. Rev. Timothy McDonald, a Senior Pastor at First Iconium Baptist Church who has a Master of Divinity from Emory University, bluntly stated that this move by the governor is strictly financial, and not about the benefit of Georgia students. He calls it hypocrisy that the state government, who hates when the federal government intervenes in state affairs, would effectively do the same thing with local school districts. “What they want is the money, control of those dollars, control of those contracts,” the pastor said. “There is nothing in this legislation that deals with improving education for our children. Not one sentence, not one word.” McDonald and his fellow plaintiffs are not naïve; they don’t’ believe the lawsuit will remove the OSD proposal from the November ballot, but that it will help to give the opposition to the governor’s plan “some leverage and to educate the public. That’s why I did it, to expose the hypocrisy of what’s being proposed.”

Ford Motor Company Fund and Hennessy Ford donate transit van for at-risk youth

ADW reports Ford Motor Company Fund and Hennessy Ford have teamed up to donate a new 15 passenger Ford Transit van to Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School — a Catholic learning community that provides a rigorous, college prep education to young people of limited economic means. Cristo Rey Atlanta is one of 12 atrisk youth organizations supported by local Ford dealers and Ford Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company. Including today’s program, Ford Fund and local dealers have also given more than $60,000 since 2015 to at-risk youth organizations throughout the Atlanta area. The Ford Transit van will be used

to transport students to and from their corporate work study jobs. Through the innovative corporate work study program, students work five full days a month in a corporate setting to fund the majority of their education, gain job experience, grow in self-confidence, and realize the relevance of their education. “Ford Fund is helping build stronger communities by investing in programs, such as Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School, that make people’s lives better,” said Benna Logan, manager, International Programming and Atlanta Region, Ford Motor Company Fund. “We focus on meeting basic needs, like feeding the hungry, supporting our military veterans, increasing opportunities for student success and volunteering at local nonprofits.”

“We cannot function without the help of our community,” said Camille Naughton, vice president of Advancement, Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School. “With this generous donation from Ford Motor Company Fund and Hennessy Ford, we will have safe and reliable transportation for the students we serve.” Since 2004, Ford Fund has invested more than $11 million in Atlanta, supporting programs such as Zoo Atlanta and the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Ford Driving Skills for Life also recently held its award-winning training sessions for new drivers in Atlanta. Ford’s expanded investments in the Atlanta region are part of Ford Fund’s Operation Better World initiative. Launched in 2008, the Operation Better World framework enables the Ford Fund, Ford dealers and other local groups to collaborate on a strategic approach to philanthropy and more effectively meet community needs. Including Atlanta, the Ford Fund has launched Operation Better World programs in 25 cities and regions around the U.S. Since 1949, Ford Fund has invested nearly 1.5 billion in community organizations around the world to help drive a brighter future by making people’s lives better.

KA and NSBE partner to produce 10,000 black engineers Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the National Society of Black Engineers have established a partnership to dramatically increase the number of black engineers produced annually in the United States. Leaders of the two organizations met at NSBE World Headquarters recently to sign a memorandum of understanding. The three-year MOU outlines the collaboration of NSBE and the Kappas to reach the primary goal of NSBE’s 10-year strategic plan, which is to increase the number of African-American bachelor’s degree recipients in engineering from 3,501 in 2014 to 10,000 annually by 2025. “Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity thanks the National Society of Black Engineers, NSBE, for your leadership…and for the engineers and leaders you are producing all across this country,” said Kappa Alpha Psi Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles Jr., the fraternity’s highest-ranking officer. “I think that it was probably in His design that we would come to this decision at this time, given the many challenges (black people) are facing in this country. And so we are delighted to partner with you in this initiative.” “Greek fraternity culture has played a pivotal role in young

men becoming male models of stature and integrity once they come of age,” said NSBE National Chair Matthew C. Nelson. “Your work is really important, and it aligns with NSBE’s mission. Positively impacting the community is something both organizations do very well.” With the agreement, NSBE and KAΨ have pledged to promote and facilitate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and career readiness for precollege students from groups that are underrepresented in these fields. The objectives of the MOU will be achieved primarily through both organizations’ youth programs: the National Society of Black Engineers’ NSBE Jr. Chapters and KAΨ’s Guide Right National Service Program. KAΨ and NSBE will collaborate in establishing six Regional Guide Right NSBE Jr. chapters, to provide students in grades 3–12 with supplemental STEM curricula and exposure to STEM concepts and career opportunities. “This partnership creates a synergy of two great organizations for a common cause to break down institutional and economic barriers for students of color to explore and pursue technology careers,” said Kevin Burnett, national

Guide Right chairman of Kappa Alpha Psi, who is responsible for supporting all of the fraternity’s youth programs and initiatives. Marlon Ridley, a proud member of KAΨ and NSBE, provided the leadership to structure the partnership. “Our country is experiencing a paradigm shift in economic opportunity and social mobility,” he said. “Organizations like NSBE and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity have a rich history of uplifting the African-American community, and this partnership will give students tools to excel in this digital economy and expands the nation’s workforce of scientists and engineers.” To reach the goal of 10,000 black engineers annually by 2025, “we need partnerships,” said NSBE Executive Director Karl W. Reid, Ed.D. “…It’s said that ‘Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor,’ and, ‘A cord of three strands is not easily broken.’ I’m thrilled that we are a cord of three strands, not just (our) organizations but the young men that we will influence going forward.”

Aerotropolis CIDs’ executive director selected for USDOT Leadership Academy

The executive director of the Aerotropolis Atlanta Community Improvement Districts will be one of the first leaders to provide input on an innovative federal transportation planning project. In early October, executive director Gerald McDowell will travel to Washington, D.C. for the Every Place Counts: Leadership Academy conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation and U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. The program will join community leaders to discuss the transportation decision-making process and how they can encourage more effective participation. McDowell said he is honored to be selected for the academy, which will prepare all attendees to have more influence on federal decisions about roadway improvements. “The Aerotropolis CIDs are strategic partners with transportation departments at all levels, and this unique experience will help us strengthen our working relationships,” McDowell said. “The academy concept speaks

to the interests of federal transportation leaders to hear from those working in communities every day, and our participation makes our CIDs a better resource.” During the day-long academy, the USDOT will roll out an initial version of its “Transportation Toolkit” document for review and input. The toolkit will focus on public-engagement opportunities that are associated with planning and project development requirements. The Aerotropolis Atlanta CIDs have a number of transportation-focused initiatives in various stages of planning and implementation, such as the addition of the diverging diamond interchange to serve I-285 at Camp Creek Parkway.

Kroger customers raise $68K for Atlanta Community Food Bank

Milk is one of the most requested, but least donated items to food banks throughout the year. In response, Kroger customers in Atlanta raised more than $68,100 from Sept. 4 – 17 for the Atlanta Community Food Bank during the Great American Milk Drive to provide the much needed source of nutrition. During the two-week “Feed a Childhood” campaign, shoppers purchased a $1, $3 or $5 icon at checkout to provide food banks with much-needed milk. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to local food pantries that provide essential food items to the more than 12.5 million American families facing hunger and malnutrition.

“The support from our customers across the Atlanta Division is overwhelming,” says Glynn Jenkins, director of communications and public relations for Kroger’s Atlanta Division. “These donations will make a large impact, providing food banks with a nutritious source of protein for those in need.” According to a Feeding America study, more than 49 million Americans are food insecure. This year’s donation of more than $124,000 across the Atlanta Division, which includes stores in Georgia, South Carolina and Eastern Alabama, totals the equivalent of more than 41,000 gallons of milk.

T.I.’s daughter Zonnique Pullins Gladys Knight’s son says she lacks mental capacity to remove sentenced on gun charges her name from restaurant By Terry Shropshire

Zonnique Pullins, the step-daughter of rapper T.I. and biological daughter of singer Tameka “Tiny” Harris, joined the “Family Hustle” of mugshots when she was arrested back in June for bringing a handgun in one of her carry-on bags through security at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport back in June. The judge in her case handed down the decision. And Pullins may have dodged a bullet (no pun intended) when she took a plea deal from the judge. Zonnique Pullins was able to escape jail time because she has never had any legal entanglements before. Pullins will have to take a gun law training class, TMZ reports, pay a $500 fine and complete 60 hours of community service. She

By Terry Shropshire

also has to submit to random drug tests. If Pullins can get all this done in 90 days, the judge agreed to drop the gun charge altogether.

Motown legend Gladys Knight and her son Shanga Hankerson have gone to war over the use of her name at his Atlanta restaurants, Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffle. Her name and brand have been greatly sullied and contaminated since her son was arrested for allegedly robbing the restaurant chain – just months after one of the restaurant stores failed a health inspection. Subsequently, Knight is demanding that he remove her name from all the restaurants, but he counters harshly, saying that she she lacks the mental capacity to cancel the licensing deal. Back in June, federal agents raided the restaurants and Hankerson was arrested on two counts of felony theft by taking $52,600 in sales tax collected in March and April, according to a Georgia Department of Revenue investigator. The AJC stated Hankerson was accused of taking a total of $650,000 in state sales and withholding taxes, which after penalties and interest totals more than $1 million. He was later released on $20,000 bond

from the Clayton County jail in suburban Atlanta. As been previously reported, Knight has never had any role in the business. She simply allowed her son to leverage her respectable name under a licensing deal to help market the restaurant. But now Knight wants out since the Department of Revenue accused Shanga of theft and tax evasion after federal agents raided three of his restaurants and shut down operations at all the stores. The mother and son had a 10-year licensing deal that ran out in 2009. Since then, they agreed on an oral licensing arrangement. Now the 72-year-old iconic singer does not have any affiliation with her son’s business. After her son’s arrest, Knight filed a lawsuit “demanding damages for Hankerson’s continued use of her name on the restaurant chain, as well as ‘certain proprietary recipes and memorabilia, including Knight’s dresses/ costumes and photographs featuring Knight and other celebrities.” Shanga is denying any wrongdoing and confirms his mother HAS been paid and he wants the lawsuit thrown out.

50 Cent destroyed by Vivica A. Fox after he blasts ‘Empire’ and Taraji P. Henson, again By Terry Shropshire For some reason, 50 Cent has demonstrated his proclivity to trash the “Empire” series in general, and Taraji P. Henson in particular. He also slammed former girlfriend Vivica A. Fox for having the audacity to make a guest appearance on the show. This time Curtis Jackson poked the bear once too often and he was summarily slammed into oblivion. Fifty claimed even that he slept with Cookie, setting off a chain of events that ended with his backside being peeled by his ex-girlfriend. He even posted a pic ture showing “Empire’s” ratings drop.

Debate democracy Twenty-one times during the presidential primaries, candidates took the stage to debate issues important to the American people. Twenty-one times, they faced questions on foreign and domestic policy, on America’s role in the world and on the philosophy each would bring to the Oval Office. And on none of those 21 occasions were they asked to debate the single most important challenge facing the country: the health of our American democracy. On Sept. 26, the nominees for President of the United States will meet for what may be the most-watched debate in the history of the country. As moderator, Lester Holt has an obligation - indeed a patriotic duty - to demand answers to the most fundamental American question: Do you believe in the essential equality of each American and if so, what specifically are you going to do to ensure that each citizen has equal political power? For the first time in more than a century, our democracy is narrowing. We are engaged in a battle for the soul of the country. We see it in Ferguson and Flint, in Baltimore and Chicago. We see it on Wall Street, in board rooms, in the halls of Congress. This is a fight not only for equality under the law, but for equality in the hearts and minds and actions of every man woman and child in these United States. It is a fight for opportunity not just in theory, or on paper, but in practice and in experience. White supremacists have emerged from the shadows, gleefully claiming a prominent place on the American political stage. Racism has always been a thinly-veiled political strategy, but now those in power have tossed the veil aside. From voter id laws to registration restrictions to voter purges, those with power grab for even more. And the money — oh, the money. Pouring from the pockets of billionaires to the coffers of SuperPACs. America’s wealthiest citizens no longer even feel any pressure to hide their intentions. They want to own Washington, the public be damned. The gap between the powerful and the

powerless is widening into a yawning sinkhole that threatens to swallow the country whole. Yes, we must first debate democracy itself. How will each of these nominees address questions of power and equality in America? How will they respond to the widening gaps between the rich and the poor, between black, brown and white, between the powerful and the powerless? How deep is their commitment to the great American experiment of democracy that began 240 years ago? We are different from almost any other country in the world. We are not united by a common ethnic or religious heritage, but rather by an idea. The strongest, wealthiest, most-diverse, most innovative country in the history of the world is held together by the promise of equality. It is the essence of our national purpose. However imperfect our process has been in realizing that equality, for most of our history we have lurched awkwardly toward a more perfect union, toward more political power shared among more people. Until now. Almost a quarter-century later, we still have not accomplished what we set out to do. It is long past time we did. There are dozens of topics to tackle that will lay bare the candidates’ commitment to our uniquely American promise. Whether Mr. Holt asks about voting rights or gerrymandering, campaign contributions or executive powers, the nominees’ answers will reveal their underlying commitment to equality, and to democracy itself. Will they make the years ahead the best chapter in the American story, one defined by a national commitment to human dignity and justice that only true equality can realize? Or will they close the book forever on what could have been? Contributed by the American Forum.

NNPA announces historic black voter turnout project for 2016 election The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) proudly asserts that, “We are the authentic voice of black America.” We must use that voice as an urgent clarion call for a massive, historic and unprecedented black American voter turnout on November 8, 2016 across the nation. The NNPA has launched “Project Black Voter Turnout 2016: 20 Million Black Voters to the Polls.” We’re calling on our entire NNPA membership, comprised of more than 211 black-owned media companies operating in the United States, to issue front-page news coverage and motivational editorials and to present banner ads on their publication websites, to promote effective Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) campaigns in the black community. It is an undisputed fact that a record number of black Americans (16,133,000) voted in 2008 and helped Barack H. Obama to become the first black president of the United States. Then, in 2012, black Americans broke their 2008 record for voter turnout, casting 17,813,000 votes. In 2012, for the first time in American history, black voter turnout (66.2 percent) at the national level surpassed white voter turnout (64.1 percent). The United States is once again at a pivotal and crucial political crossroads. The outcome of the Nov. 8 national elections will determine the future of the nation and of the world. This is a propitious moment, not only for 47 million black Americans, but this is also the time for all Americans to decide whether or not American democracy will finally fully embrace the goals of freedom, justice, equality and empowerment for all people. Don’t let anybody attempt to suggest that your vote doesn’t count. Every vote counts. For some strange reason, there are several national pundits that are once again predicting a low voter turnout by black America. These external pollsters and political observers really don’t know black America. This is one of the reasons why the NNPA and other black-owned media companies are so strategically important. The NNPA not only knows the facts about black America, the NNPA also reports and defends the interests of

black America without apology or compromise of principle and integrity. For nearly 190 years, the black press in America has been and continues to be the “trusted voice” of black America. No political party should take the black vote for granted. Our votes have mattered and our votes will continue to matter. We will make the critical difference in the outcome of the upcoming national elections. We have both a sacred obligation and a historic responsibility to ensure that we will have the largest black American voter turnout in history, because the overall quality of life of our families and communities is at stake. Our energy, actions, and spirits must remain high and we have to fully engage the electoral process locally, regionally and nationally. The NNPA’s “Project Black Voter Turnout 2016: 20 Million Black Voters to the Polls” will work in coalition with other national organizations including the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, NAACP, Rainbow PUSH, National Action Network, National Urban League, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Black Lives Matter, National Baptist Convention, Progressive National Baptist Convention, African Methodist Episcopal Church, AME Zion Church, Church of the God in Christ, United Church of Christ, and the National Council of Churches. “Project Black Voter Turnout 2016” will engage the Black community and all voters in print, online and through social media. Please join our efforts by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @BlackPressUSA, @ NNPA_BlackPress, @NCBCP, and @NAACP and using the hashtags #BlackPressMatters and #BlackVotesMatter. Our time is now. Let’s all work together. Let’s get out the vote! Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. is the President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and can be reached for national advertisement sales and partnership proposals at dr.bchavis@nnpa.org and for lectures and other professional consultations at: http://drbenjaminfchavisjr.wix.com/drbfc.
