apply your self

More and more recruiters now require that graduates apply for positions online. However, all too often students make mistakes when completing online application forms. Real World tells you how to apply for a job online and what gaffes to avoid.

The

rapid growth of the Internet now means that the majority of graduate recruiters request that applicants complete application forms online. But graduate recruiters and careers advisers alike tell us that students often fall at the first hurdle because of mistakes in their online applications. Tammy Goldfeld, of the Careers and Employability Division at the University of Manchester, says: ‘Employers tell us that students commit a multitude of sins when filling in online application forms and as a result most applications are weeded out at

6 www.realworldmagazine.com

this first stage.’ She adds: ‘They don’t provide a variety of examples to support their answers and often, they simply undersell themselves.’ However, you don’t have to fall into the same pitfalls as your fellow students. A bit of common sense and some time spent on each application will help you stand out from the crowd. Follow our step-by-step guide to on-line application forms:

Do...

1...compose your answers in Word first. Terry Jones, careers adviser at King’s College London, recommends this because it means you can spell-check and grammar-check. He says: ‘When you are satisfied you have your best correct answer, copy and paste into the on-line form.’ 2...research the company you are applying to. Before you even begin to complete an application form it is essential that you find out as much as you can about the position and the employer. To do this, scour their website and attend any presentations they make at your university.

Describe your achievements and successes very confidently, otherwise you won’t get the chance at an interview.”

3...get someone to read your application. Two pairs of eyes are better than one, so make sure a friend – or better still a careers adviser – looks at your application before you submit it. They will be able to spot any typos or glaring mistakes. 4...save a copy. You will probably be applying to numerous companies, so make sure you have duplicates of each application form you submit. This will be of the utmost importance when it comes to interview time, because the recruiter will want more information about the answers you have supplied. 5...read the questions carefully. The University of Manchester’s Tammy Goldfeld, says: ‘My best piece of advice is to describe your achievements and successes very confidently; otherwise you won’t get the chance at an interview.’ Anna Preston, careers consultant at the University of Warwick adds: ‘It’s essential that each answer is tailored and that it actually addresses the question.’

Don’t...

send off the application straight away. He advises: ‘Come back to the form after a good night’s sleep so at the final edit it is as though you are seeing it for the first time.’ 2...cut and paste from other forms. Tammy Goldfeld points out that this is one the biggest mistakes students make: ‘They cut and paste answers without changing the names of the companies to which they’re applying’. 3...use txt spk. Just because you are using the Internet to apply for a job, it doesn’t mean you should complete your application as if you were on msn. Employers want evidence that graduates are literate: so don’t use sloppy language. You need to prove that you can be professional in your communication. 4...lie about your achievements. This is particularly true when it comes to academic results. False grades might get you an interview, but if you are made a job offer it is highly likely you will have to produce result certificates. Likewise don’t make bogus claims about positions you have held. 5...leave the application to the last minute. Submitting your application on the day of the deadline is not advisable for a number of reasons. Firstly, the computer system could crash leaving you with no time to make another submission. Second, some jobs may be filled on a first-come-first-served basis, so the earlier you apply the better. Go over the application form at the end as well – just as you would at the end of the exam – to make sure you didn’t miss anything out, or to add to any answers. 

1...rush the form. Terry Jones suggests that applicants use the ‘Save’ function and never

Accountancy & Actuarial

Accountancy & Actuarial

ccording to industry experts, the need for qualified accountants, both in the UK and internationally, is increasing as regulations become stricter and more international. Within the accountancy sector there are many ‘niches’ graduates can qualify into, such as tax and auditing. There are a number of further qualifications that prospective accountants need to take, each with a different specialism. So, make sure you know the difference between your CIMAs (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) and CIPFAs (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) before applying to companies. Actuaries are tasked with looking to the future. Using analysis and statistics they solve problems and forecast financial futures. For example, an actuary might work out projected payouts for pensions or calculate premiums for insurance companies. Given how complex an actuary’s work is, training can be anywhere between three and six years. But the payoff is that, once qualified, an actuary can earn from around £30,000 to more than £100,000.

Qualifications • A good degree (with many now asking for at least a 2:1) in any discipline and between 260 and 340 UCAS points. • Trainee accountants have to undertake three years of professional exams in their chosen area. • Some firms require maths A-level, or at least a top grade at GCSE. What the experts say: ‘You don’t need to be a maths genius to be an accountant. Most accountants use software packages to do a lot of their calculation. But you need to be able to interpret important information and be able to communicate it to others who might not have the same financial knowledge. Communication is important whether you’re writing a report or requesting or delivering information.’ Amrit Saroya, ACCA Personality it would suit: You need to be determined and a hard worker, with numerical skills and the ability to work as a part of a team. What to say: ‘I have a head for numbers and I enjoy teamwork.’ What not to say: ‘Maths is anathema to me.’

anking and finance regularly top polls of the most popular career paths for graduates and, for many, it is because the graduate schemes offer high salaries. For example, with an analyst role at an investment bank graduates can expect a starting salary of roughly £35,000. Insurance, retail banking companies and public sector organisations are marketing themselves with a vengeance and in many cases offer serious financial careers, but with a better work-life balance than their City counterparts. Without doubt the recent downturn in the economy has had an impact on the banking and finance sector. As a result there are fewer graduate vacancies on offer, meaning it is even more vital that your CV stands out from the crowd in an increasingly competitive market.

t is impossible to overstate the importance that engineers play in our everyday lives. Engineering can be seen everywhere from the country’s transport infrastructure, to the manufacture of electronic components. The Olympic Games in 2012 will also create a huge number of opportunities for all sorts of engineers. The industry spans many different specialisations, the main ones being civil, mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering. The sector offers a challenging career path, with many engineers ultimately adopting management roles. Another attractive element of engineering is the remuneration; it is the UK’s third highest earning industry with lucrative salaries starting at around £22,500. Careers for graduates include research and development, design, planning and maintenance.

IT & Technology

IT & Technology

A

ccording to e-skills UK, one in twenty UK workers is employed in Information Technology (IT), and over the next five years, as our daily lives become even more computerised, that figure is set to rise. However, after the dotcom collapse of the early 2000’s, applications to IT-related degrees have fallen by 50 per cent, and now 55 per cent of those entering the industry do not have computing degrees. Rather than computer skills, what IT companies are more interested in are customer-facing, networking and interpersonal skills. Although some roles are highly technical, such as software developer and support engineer, you can also enter the sector in marketing, sales and business roles. Salaries tend to be good, starting at around the £20,000 mark, but quickly rising to £40,000, while IT Directors can earn over £100k. This is a fast paced sector with new technology seemingly coming through on a daily basis, and so the work atmosphere is exciting and can be pressurised. Because of this you will need drive and motivation, and the ability to understand and communicate clearly with other people.

Qualifications • For the more technical jobs degrees in IT or computer science are useful, but many companies now specify a less technical brief in order to attract graduates with better levels of soft skills, who they can then train up in the technical aspects. • Most firms will be looking for a 2:1, but some may have an entry criterion of 2:2 to increase the talent pool available to them. What to say: ‘There has to be an easier solution and I’m going to find it.’ What not to say: ‘Computer says no!’

Public Sector

T

he public sector, including the Navy, the Air Force and the British Army, is Britain’s largest employer. There is a wide variety of occupations to choose from within the public sector, including areas such as the Civil Service, local government, National Health Service, education, social service, law enforcement and defence. While salaries may not be as high as some in the commercial world, the public sector is believed to be among the most secure work environments, and consequently is hugely popular with many graduates. For example, the civil service is an increasingly streamlined multi-million pound business in which 500,000 people are involved.

Qualifications • A degree in any discipline will suffice for a ‘general post’ in the Civil Service. • Many departments specify relevant qualifications, for example, accountancy or law. • Obviously there will be a certain amount of physical training if you want to join the Navy, the Air Force, or the British Army. Links Government Legal Service www.gls.gsi.gov.uk Armed Forces www.armyjobs.mod.uk www.careers.royalnavy.mod.uk www.raf.mod.uk/careers

What the experts say: ‘Ask any lawyer with the Government Legal Service (GLS) what they love about it most, and they’ll probably cite the intellectual challenge, the political interest and the chance to help shape public law. They may also mention the fact that they’re never pigeonholed and can move from one government department to another. Being tuned in to current affairs is important, as is genuine enthusiasm for working in the public sector.’ Government Legal Service Personality it would suit: Diversity is a key requirement for the public sector because you need to be able to identify with people from all warps of life. Passionate, committed individuals focused upon making a difference are also successful. What to say: ‘I relish the opportunity of working with all sorts of different people.’ What not to say: ‘I’m for strike action.’

Sales

Sales

J

obs in sales are hit hard during downturns in the economy for the simple reason companies and individuals pull their belts in and buy less! That means in order to succeed in sales you have to be persistent, resilient and extremely persuasive – whether you are selling advertising space, FMCGs or luxury cars. With less money around the pressure is on you to make that sale and hit those targets. Roles within this sector are very varied but most will involve some or all of the following activities; cultivating prospective buyers, promoting the product being sold, negotiating, and closing the sale. Interpersonal skills are paramount here where your relationship with the potential buyer can make or break the deal. Most sales positions pay a basic salary with earnings boosted by commission, so this is an industry where you really can’t afford to have an off day. Getting lots of quality experience is crucial and as you move up from graduate sales assistant positions further into management more training may be required.

Qualifications • Most degree disciplines are welcome. • Undertaking further training and becoming a member of a professional body is advisable as you become more senior. Links Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) www.cim.co.uk The Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM) www.theidm.co.uk

What the experts say: ‘In order to be successful in sales, one must be resilient, competitive and have a ‘can-do’ attitude. It’s important to remember that there is an element of sales in ANY job role that you choose – from working behind the pub counter to helping out in an office. A good sales person is always selling themselves, and selling what they can do for the company. In times of economic uncertainty, sales skills become an even more important attribute. It is the ability of the workforce to identify and introduce new opportunities that can make the difference between a successful company and an unsuccessful one.’ Enterprise Rent-A-Car Personality it would suit: You need to be a people person – outgoing, optimistic – with exceptionally high communication and negotiation skills. What to say: ‘I thrive in a competitive atmosphere.’ What not to say: ‘I’ve had enough rejection today.’

Teaching

Teaching

‘Y

ou never forget a good teacher’, or at least so goes the advertising campaign. Whether you choose to teach at primary or secondary level you will make a difference to children’s lives by assisting them with their education. In terms of graduate careers it is considered one of the most financially secure and rewarding. Starting salaries compare well with other graduate professions. From September 2008, a newly qualified teacher will earn a minimum of £20,627 (£25,000 in inner London) but could start higher up the scale depending on previous experience. In addition, you could be eligible to receive a golden hello payment of between £2,500 and £5,000 if you complete a postgraduate initial teacher training (ITT) course and take up a permanent position in a maintained school or non-maintained special school in England. In order to teach you’ll need qualified teacher status (QTS); this is most commonly achieved by a one year PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education). There are also employment-based routes such as the graduate training programme (GTP) or SCITTs (school-centred initial teacher training).

Qualifications • To train as a teacher (on any programme) you must achieve a standard equivalent to grade C in GCSE English language and mathematics. If you want to teach primary or key stage 2/3 (ages 7-14), you must also have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade C in a GCSE science subject. • The postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) focuses on developing your teaching skills, rather then the subject you intend to teach, so you need to have a good understanding of your chosen subject to degree level. • Teach First is a programme targeted at top graduates to bring additional excellent teachers into challenging schools for two years. You will need a minimum of a 2:1 degree and exceptional communication skills to be accepted onto the programme. 24 www.realworldmagazine.com

Personality it would suit: You really must enjoy working with people in order to be a teacher. You must be able to communicate with all age groups, have maturity, patience, stamina, and a lot of self confidence and self belief. However, the most important strength you can bring to this sector is a well developed sense of humour. What to say: ‘I’m looking forward to this challenge.’ What not to say: ‘I just don’t understand the younger generation!’
