Felix Rowan-Young

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management 2017 BSc Zoo Management 2020 Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Liverpool John Moores University 2021 Job title: Freelance outdoor educator

“I enjoyed so many experiences and opportunities at Reaseheath. I was encouraged to try different things and to develop my own unique skills set.

“Becoming a Reaseheath zoo guide and getting involved in summer schools made me think seriously about becoming an educator, specialising in natural history and conservation. It’s really important that we inspire the next generation to care for the natural world.

“While I was an undergraduate I gained a Youth Leadership Award, and I also became Vice Chair and then Chair of Chester Zoo’s Youth Board. We were tasked with helping to shape the zoo’s future and strengthen its appeal to teenagers and young adults. I’ve now set up a forest school and I also work as a Wildlife Trust educator, so I feel I’ve achieved a lot.”

Your Reaseheath Experience

Our animal management students love to party, so you’ll be quickly introduced to our campus social and sporting calendar, and you’ll be encouraged to get involved with environmental projects in the community and to join fundraising events.

We have a variety of student societies for you to get involved in, including our Animal Enrichment society, and our Avian and Canine societies too, which will give you extra experience, an opportunity to make new friends and the chance to spend even more time with the animals you are most interested in.

Benefit from our industry links

Thanks to our wide industry links we run an outstanding programme of inspirational speakers and seminars and behind the scenes visits to some of the country’s leading zoos and wildlife parks such as Chester Zoo and Edinburgh Zoo. We’ve had lectures from well known people such as influential conservationist Ian Redmond OBE.

Previous careers events have been attended by Cats Protection League, the RSPCA and local businesses including animal trainers and behaviourists. Our industry partners also have input into our courses, ensuring that you have the practical skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.

Where you’ll be studying

You’ll be based in our Animal Centre with its licensed zoo, outdoor and indoor enclosures and dedicated birds of prey, reptile, amphibian, fish and companion animal sections. We also have a dog grooming parlour, kennels and a dog training field.

Your classroom theory will come alive when you work with some of our many species and you’ll add to your practical skills during your work placement. You can join student clubs such as ‘Student Voice’, where members work on practical projects within the zoo, or you could volunteer to engage with the thousands of visitors who come to our zoo each year. Rio’s story

Rio James-Williams

Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management Next step: Degree in veterinary nursing Ambition: Veterinary nurse

“I knew I wanted to work with animals and I chose to study at Reaseheath because it has such a good reputation in that sector.

“My big discovery was that I like to care for animals, particularly domestic pets. I enjoy interacting with them and their owners. During my course I carried out health checks of the animals in Reaseheath’s collection, so I learned how to handle a wide range, from companions to exotics, and I also studied customer care.

“Apart from the animals, Reaseheath has a great social life. And the lecturers and tutors really care how you’re doing and will always put themselves out. I feel really prepared and excited for the next stage of my life.”
