Page 1

Welcome to the third annual Brandywine Valley Summer Series Horse Show. We have recently obtained our 501(c)(3) non-forprofit status which will ensure stronger financial support distributed to local organizations in addition to offering new tax benefits to our supporters and sponsors. Our two beneficiaries this year are Main Line Animal Rescue and Danny and Ron's Rescue. Both of these organizations focus on the importance of placing rescue animals in safe loving homes. There will be opportunities to learn more about these wonderful groups at our show. I hope you can take time to learn more about these organizations and the work they do. I appreciate your support and interest in joining us this summer at the historic Devon show grounds. I wish to extend my gratitude to our sponsors, exhibitors, trainers and volunteers for making this all happen. We couldn't do it without you! Thank you again,

The Moran Family Award In Recognition of Excellence in the Industry

Joey Darby It is with great pleasure that we award this year’s Moran Family Award for “Excellence in the Industry” to Joey Darby. As a rider, trainer and respected judge, Joey’s career has spanned over 40 years. His name is legendary and he exemplifies the essence of true horsemanship and tradition in the Hunter industry. In the late 1960’s he relocated to Any Day Farm in Southern Pines, the heartland of the show hunter. As a rider and trainer for loyal owners Keith Bailey's "Balaliaka." Ridden to the title of AHSA Working Horse of the Year in 1972, Joe Darby such as Junie Kulp and Sally Sexton, was the professional who showed her. he garnered success with such memorable champions as Balalaika, Lyric, Sand Man, Loveable Truly, Rosie Report and Goodness. He also found success in the jumper ring with horses such as Arrive Alive and Brother Sam who went on to compete at Aachen with Canadian, Ian Millar. Joey has been a renaissance man in the equine industry, having mentored young equestrians in Hunters, Jumpers, Saddlebreds, Three-Day Eventing and Driving. Over the years he has coached many three-day riders who wished to improve their stadium jumping skills. His pupils include Olympians Michael Plumb and Phillip Dutton. Joey is an inspiration and an idol to many in the Hunter industry and in a multitude of other disciplines. He has received accolades on many levels and remains humble in his successes. He is most deserving of this award.

Balaliaka’s Story by Joe Darby “Magic Heart,” my soul, my heart was shown under the call name Balaliaka. My first love was horses, like many young girls. I had the good fortune to purchase, with ...my very meager savings, this skinny, frightened 3-year-old filly straight off the track. She became an awesome, incredible athlete. She took me to heights in the show ring that I could have never imagined. I sold her when I was junior in college. It had become impossible, financially, to continue showing her. Ten years later I bought her back and she lived out her life of retirement with me.
