Welcome to the second annual Brandywine Valley Summer Series Horse Show. I would like to thank those who made our first year such a success, I hope to see you again this year. Our two local non-for-profit organizations we are honoring this year are the Chester County Food Bank and The Abby Miller Foundation. They both will be present at the show, I hope you can take some time to learn more about them. They are vital contributors to our local community. I appreciate your support and interest in joining us this summer at the historic Devon show grounds. I wish to extend my gratitude to our sponsors, exhibitors, trainers and volunteers for making this all happen. We couldn't do it without you. Thank you again,

The Moran Family Award In Recognition of Excellence in the Industry
Leonard A. King

Few have contributed more to the development and growth of the show jumping industry than Leonard King. You may know him as the “Face of Devon,” but there is much more to him than meets the eye. Behind the scenes, much of his 40 year career has been dedicated to bringing the sport of show jumping to the popularity it holds today. King was one of the founding members of the American Grand Prix Association in 1978 and remained its President through 1999. In his role as President, he helped to unify Grand Prix events into a series and lured in the first major corporate sponsor of show jumping, Mercedes Benz. He was coproducer and co-manager of The American Gold Cup, The Philadelphia Horse Show, The Baltimore Jumper Classic, The Valley Forge Grand Prix and the inaugural FEI World Cup in the United States in Baltimore, MD. Leonard has been involved with the Devon Horse Show for 47 years and has held the position of Chairman or President for the last 15 years. In 2010, he was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame.
It is only fitting that we mention Leonard’s ties to the local community. Having grown up in a row house in Chester, PA just outside of Philadelphia, King was given his first pony at age 12. He quickly developed a love of horses and a few years later, became an avid fox hunter with both the Rose Tree Hunt and The Radnor Hunt. In the hunt field, he met Pat, his wife of 47 years and an accomplished hunter rider. Leonard is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he perfected a talent for painting leading to numerous exhibitions of his works. It is an honor for our family to dedicate this year’s Moran Family Award to Leonard King for his years of dedication and service to the sport of show jumping. We believe that his devotion and continued passion for the sport has made The Devon Horse Show what it is today, a tradition in The Brandywine Valley. Award presentation to take place Sunday, July 1 before the USHJA International Hunter Derby.

HUNTER DIVISIONS Hunter Classes will be run in accordance with USEF and Zone 2 specifications unless otherwise stated. Hunter Courses will simulate fences found in the hunter field such as: brush, wall, in and out, oxer, post and rail, gate, aiken and panels. Handy Hunter courses will use jumps found in the trappy hunting field. The course will consist of two changes of lead after the first jump and one combination, riders may be asked to trot a lower fence or lead over a small obstacle. Emphasis will be placed on turns, promptness and jumping style. Hunter Over Fences to be judged on performance and soundness unless otherwise stated. Hunter Under Saddles to be shown at the walk, trot and canter. Light contact with the horse’s mouth is required. No martingales are allowed. Riders may be asked to hand gallop one way of the ring, however, no more than eight entries may be asked to hand gallop at one time. Green and non rated classes will not be asked to hand gallop. Conflicts must go through the starter with sufficient notice to make adjustments. CHAMPION AND RESERVE CHAMPION: To be awarded to two of the four horses scoring the most points over fences. In addition, only these will receive full points for ribbons won under saddle and half points for ribbons won in the model (full points in Regular Conformation). See Special Awards Section for Grand Champion and Circuit Awards Specifications.
