There were several modifications lately in the way Google behaves in delivering searchers the result that they wanted to see. Similar to buying a specific product in a store, you would appreciate a product that has a comprehensive description printed outside the box. This feature will save you time instead of taking several minutes trying to open it before getting to the user’s manual.

In Google’s search result, Snippets are presented to you which will give you a preview of what is the content all about without opening the actual page. But in some cases, the meta description is not descriptive enough of its content because of the character count limitation set by Google. As a result, searchers, need to open the page and undergo the burden of reading through the content, only to find out that it was not what they were looking for. So to mitigate this scenario, Google adjusted its allowable number of characters for meta descriptions.

Google said they recently made some changes to give more useful snippets to searchers. They aim to aid people in understanding how pages are related and pertinent to their search query. With that being considered, snippets are now slightly longer compared before. From the previous 160 characters, The tools had been tracing its changes and noticed that it had been adjusted to roughly 230 characters on average. In fact, If you have been using Google for the past few weeks, you might have noticed this adjustment. This screenshot for example, shows 312 characters.

Mobile devices received its share for the changes too. If you search using your mobile phone now, you will see a lengthy meta description. From the previous 130 characters maximum, you will see some meta descriptions of 160 characters like the screenshot below.

This modification will provide webmasters and SEO experts additional spaces for keywords and more line to better describe their page which may result in a more promising rank. These changes will inevitably benefit those who are struggling with the character restriction. However, these update is still at its dawn. All of these are not yet official and may change anytime. So hold your horses until Google announces it officially.
