Google through a guidelines article published recently revealed that the image size requirement for accelerated mobile pages or AMPs has changed. The said article shared that under the new guideline the images used for AMPs should now have widths that are almost twice of those that are recommended previously. The same article also hinted that Google’s new requirement now recommends that the width of the images used on AMPs should be increased from 696 pixels to 1200 pixels. Furthermore, these images should also contain a minimum of 800k total pixels and must be presented with aspect ratios of 16:9, 4:3, and 1:1. For a more precise presentation, an image of the new Google guideline for AMP images is provided below.
It is worth noting that the new guidelines are specifically intended as minimum recommendations needed for articles to be featured in the AMP carousel. Thus, website owners are strongly advised to stick to these guidelines since failure to do so will most likely prevent some of their articles from being featured in the carousel’s top stories as well as at the beginning of search results. However, not being able to place images that adhere to the new guidelines don’t mean the AMP will not be indexed. It will be but might lose its opportunity to be on top of similar articles published by other site competitors. Given this new trend, it is somehow a must for SEO practitioners and professionals to fully understand the other effects of the new guidelines in their AMP campaign. Finally, they are highly encouraged to be in constant monitoring of the succeeding changes in the guidelines that Google might roll out shortly.
