Technology boosts efficiency and enhances environment The rise of technology has created more productive farms while reducing the environmental impact, according to Eyrewell farmer Mike Smith. When Mike and his family began their farming partnership in 2010, they boosted soil fertility, along with adding soil moisture monitors, soil temperature monitors and flow metres. “A lot of farms were only testing selected blocks of land, but we decided to test every single paddock individually to get the best results.”Mike says advances in technology have revolutionised farming. “At any time, I can check exactly what’s happening on my farms using an app on my phone. We can break everything down into small details to build up an exact picture of what’s happening.”

North Canterbury Zone manager, Andrew Arps, says farmers are embracing technology to ensure they improve the environment while boosting efficiency. “Farmers like Mike are making a huge investment in technology so they can produce figures and facts which show every action they take on their farms. We’re seeing this come through in their Farm Environment plans and audits.” Mike sees a bright future for farming in New Zealand and wants to pass on his farm to his daughters. “I want them to feel proud to be farmers. I see us as custodians of the land. We’ve taken this land from a dry block to fertile ground which is productive." By showing the facts and figures we can prove to the public what we’re doing and how much of a positive impact technology is having on farming and the environment.

The Royal Agricultural Society, the umbrella organisation for all A & P Societies in NZ and Breed Societies recently undertook their Central District Zone selection for the Harcourts Rural Ambassador Awards. This programme has a proud history dating back to the 1990s. It has been a national based competition until recent years, when it was extended to Australia. This has elevated the prestige of the award even further, and it is very highly sought after by those seeking to propel their agricultural careers forward. This year the NZ final is in New Plymouth. This award recognises excellence among young people, aged between 20 to 30 and who are active within the A & P showing movement.

Congratulations Marie Timerley from Oxford. Marie emerged as our Central District Zone representative and will be off to New Plymouth in June to compete with other regional winners. We wish Marie the best of luck.
