IN CONVERSATION: TINA BROWN Days after the election and a month before she’ll retire the print edition of Newsweek, this pioneering editor talks with Michael Kinsley about the future for newsweeklies, American Anglophilia, and personally presiding over the end of the twentieth century.

MILWAUKEE DAME
@TheTinaBeast By Michael Kinsley Published Nov 18, 2012 So, Tina, who did you vote for ? You know who I voted for. With enthusiasm ? Yes. Powered by utter contempt for what was
happening on the other side. Not powered by wild enthusiasm so much as wild running away from the other man. Harry’s been in a rage with Romney for the last six months.
When did you and your husband become citizens ? After 9/11: 9/11 made me a New Yorker. I decided I cared so much about this country that I was kidding
myself that I was ever going to go back to the U.K. It was time to get married.
But you’ll always be regarded as a Brit. And not just a Brit, but someone who was part of, or led, the British invasion of American journalism—Anna Wintour and so on. Graydon Carter isn’t technically British, he’s Canadian, but he has certainly given Vanity Fair an

enough of them in the House to frustrate Obama’s modest attempts to promote growth. Maybe
everyone will now see the light, I hope so. But maybe we’ll all cartwheel over the same austerity cliff.
As for the fiat you imagine David Cameron can
promulgate, don’t underrate the effect on a British prime minister’s capacity to impose anything when he gets sliced and diced in Parliament at question
time. A few lousy performances and he could lose
the support of his backbenchers. A president doesn’t have to face anything like that, certainly not a press of such feral appetite.
When you took over Newsweek, after Sidney Harman bought it and brought you and Barry Diller in as
partners, everyone I talked to had the same reaction: If anyone can pull this off, it will be Tina, but no one
can pull this off. That turns out to have been correct ?

I think British journalists do well in America because the newspaper culture there is so strong—telling
stories and presenting them readably is in their DNA. British newspapers get a terrible rap, but they are
brilliant in their presentation, most of them, so full of vitality and literary wit. Never has more talent been put to such meretricious ends.
What do you make of what’s going on over there politically? Prime Minister Cameron proposed an
austerity plan, and, because of the parliamentary
system, he could actually impose it. But that seems to have been a mistake. Meanwhile, here, Obama’s
life to be had for Newsweek. We felt that for the
print platform as well would be great. And, actually, that proved to be true. But every piece of the
Zeitgeist was against Newsweek, combined with
an unfixable infrastructure and a set of challenges
that really would have required five years in an up economy to solve.
What was your vision for it ? I’ve always been very enamored of European
newsmagazines—the Spiegel kind of magazine,
which has an energetic, high-low approach to news. But those magazines also need a lot of pages—

And in the professional world, where first impressions are everything, your hairstyle can easily work for - or against - your chance of success. “Though policies on what hairstyles are acceptable in the workplace have loosened, hair can still signify certain levels of professionalism,” says Midge Wilson, Ph.D., professor of psychology at DePaul University.

The question is what sort of messages are your tresses sending? Is your hair helping
you rise to the top — or holding you back?
BLONDE VS BRUNETTE + There's evidence that blondes are beginning to get a more serious rep. While a 2002 survey by Clairol revealed that of the 1,000-plus women interviewed, 76 percent believed the first female president of the United States would be a brunette, a similar survey by Clairol in 2008 yielded split results between a brunette and a blonde. “Today blond women are the new brunettes, and they have Hillary Clinton to thank for that,” says Franco Della Grazia, senior stylist at Cutler Salon in NYC. “She's a powerful woman, telling it like it is, sitting down with heads of state from all over the world. I don't know how much fun she's having, but she’s being taken seriously.”
+ Interestingly, if you're in a creative or artsy field, says Wilson, it could be to your advantage to go either super-blond (think Agyness Deyn's platinum phase) or super-dark (note Nicole Richie's deep brown locks), rather than choosing an au naturel hue, which tends to send a neutral

+ The number one rule of thumb when it comes to curls: Keep them well-coiffed. “If you choose to wear your hair curly for an interview, make sure it's under control and doesn't upstage you and your talents,” says Erin Anderson, co-owner of Woodley and Bunny apothecary and salon in

+The verdict on middle versus side parts: Like blunt bangs, a middle part is considered a bolder, edgier statement than the side-swept alternative, which Javier calls “more preppy and sophisticated.”
BANGS + Blunt bangs are often interpreted as trendy and bold — perfect for creative workplaces. “You will definitely give off a high-fashion, strong, and secure message with blunt bangs,” says stylist James Vides of Sally Hershberger Downtown New York. “It gives you a very definitive look.”

Desk Bound
Stress Relief Feel your best at work with a few minutes of yoga at your desk. Written By Sienna Smith Photographs by Tony George
Let’s face it: we’re a desk-potato nation. Some 80 percent of American jobs are sedentary, according to a study conducted earlier this year by the Pennington biomedical research center at Louisiana state university in baton rouge, which conducts studies on physical activity, obesity, and aging.
But our bodies aren’t designed to hold a position for eight or more hours a day—they’re made to dance, twist, jump, and run. When we’re deskbound, the body has to hold a fixed, unnatural position for a long time. Eventually that can lead to problems, including changes in our metabolism, decreased circulation in the legs, and compression in the spine and pelvis, which places extra pressure on the connective tissue and nerves. Chronically poor posture can also lead to neck and back pain, repetitive stress injuries, and even bulging disks and sciatica.
What’s the solution? Stand up, stretch, and breathe deeply at least once every 50 minutes. Get up and out of your chair —your body will thank you.
