Work Experience
Studio Weave/Asylum Productions, Kilkenny
This internship was run by Studio Weave in partnership with Asylum Productions. The theatre company led the production of the play ‘The Big Chapel’, which delved into the history of the town by the means of promenade theatre. Whilst assisting in the production of the play, I also looked into the beginning of a regeneration project based in the towns Friary complex, where they hope to develop a community garden. (May 2019 - September 2019)
Gateway Architecture, Vancouver
During a two-year working visa in Canada, I was employed as a junior architect in this well established Vancouver firm. I worked at both the architectural office as well as their interior design department. The firm worked mainly in high end condos, commerical units and some private dwellings. My tasks here included completing mill work drawings, survey drawings and general office tasks. (2017 - 2018)
Brian Dunlop Architects, Kilkenny
I interned at this firm after completing my undergraduate degree in May, 2016. I felt that this was an invaluable experience and a first hand look into a working architectural office. Whilst there, my duties included - onsite surveying; preparation of survey drawings and fire evacuation drawings; assistance with planning applications submissions and design works on private dwellings. (June - September 2016)

01 2145 Callan Studio VIII Semester 02 - Year 4 Univesity College Dublin
Studio 8 was based in Callan, a small town in Kilkenny. It was chosen as part of the rural regeneration scheme for ‘Project Ireland 2040’ in 2018. Alongside this, ‘The Big Chapel’ theatre production would take place in the town that summer, telling its history as part of the Kilkenny Arts Festival. The studio was run by UCD tutors with assistance from Je Ahn of Studio Weave, London. The class was encouraged to create their own briefs, choose their own site and time. My proposal jumped into the future to examine Ireland in 2145, where sea levels have risen by 70 meters. I looked at how Callan as a whole could adapt in the future in regards to climate change. Inspired by the idea of ‘Narrative Architecture’, I took on my own meaning of the term and created a hypothetical situation to explore this real life crisis. There was a need for exaggeration to convey the importance of this issue. The focus for the proposal was to imagine a new world, how the people would live there and what architectural structures they may require in order to survive.
Architectural Design VIII
Models predict that earth will warm between 2 and 6 degrees in the next century. When global warming has happened at various times in the past 2 million years it has taken the planet about 5000 years to warm 5 degrees. The predicted rate of warming for the next century is at least 20 times faster. The year in 2145. Sea levels around the globe have risen to an unprecedented level. Dublin is in ruins under the ever expanding Irish Sea. Towns and local communities have become self governed in an attempt to survive this new world. You have been placed in Callan, Kilkenny (or what’s left of it) to research & document how the people adapt to this situation. How do they grow food? How do they travel? What social activities still exist? How do people live with limited supplies? Who still lives in the town? How has the land coped? What is left of the local flora and fauna? Does tourism still exist? These are some questions that you should ask yourself throughout the semester to help you with your design project.

02 The Lonely City Thesis Project Year 5 University College Dublin
We are in a time of absolute uncertainty. The world around us is quickly changing with our ecosystems and environments deteriorating. This can have an adverse effect on one’s mental health and well being. This thesis looks to investigate how in the wake of climate breakdown, our built environment can help to alleviate these stresses. One issue is especially prevalent within the urban context of our cities, which is the issue of loneliness or social isolation. It is a common urban phenomenon that one may feel at their most isolated when surrounded by other people. Through the research conducted, access to nature is paramount in good mental health within the city. Proximity to and a variety of green spaces is required. It is something that Dublin as a city is lacking. The thesis is tested on the site of Bridgefoot Street in Dublin city. Many colleges, businesses and charities all operate from the area. It is home to a variety of people of different socio-economic backgrounds. It is one of the most densely populated areas of Dublin city. How do you create a place for these different groups of people to interact? The thesis is explored through the programmes of a park and canteen located on Bridgefoot Street.

03 Pedestrian Connections SUDes Studio Semester 01 - Year 4 Lund University
During my erasmus exchange at Lund University, I had the opportunity to take part in an urban design studio. ‘Sustainable Urban Design’ was a separate masters course at the university and has for the last 6 years worked on sites based in China as part of their final studio project. The project this semester was located in Dujiangyan which is in the southwest of China. The area is known for being the birthplace of Taoism and for it’s 2000 year old irrigation system. Our site was located close to the historic centre with the Min river running through it. Whilst on site I identified some major issues in the area including - cars having the highest priority, major demolition & displacement and a lack of public seating & spaces. I also had the opportunity to speak with some of the locals to see what they would like in the area. The aim of my design was to improve the walkability of the site by increasing the connections through the site to the rest of the city. Following a 5 minute city design, I dispersed the public services throughout the site. I planned to activate the waterfront by adding a linear park on the north bank and an urban market area on the south. My hope is that these guidelines can also be used in the future to develop the rest of the city as it plans to become a major tourist city by 2030.

04 Professional Experience Studio Weave Gateway Architects Brian Dunlop Architects
In the summer of 2019, I took part in an internship with Studio Weave in Callan, Kilkenny. I was chosen for this internship after completing the design studio there. During the internship I assisted in the production of ‘The Bog Chapel’ play. I also met with locals from the town as part of a feasibility study for a community garden and drew up some concept designs for this. I also curated an exhibition of the classes drawings for the Kilkenny Arts Festival. During my time in Vancouver Canada, between the bachelors and masters degree, I worked at a small firm Gateway Architecture. One project I worked on from drawings to completion was a liquor store and wine tasting area in downtown Vancouver. Working with a team of architects and interior designers, I took part in the design and production of the drawings for the proposal. I produced plans and interior millwork drawings. I also liaised with the other consultants for their work and prepared the package for the city council submission. I interned with Brian Dunlop Architects in Kilkenny during the summer of 2016. Whilst there, my duties included - onsite surveying; preparation of survey drawings and fire evacuation drawings; assistance with planning application submissions and design works on private dwellings.
