Expanding on my Online Presence

Contacting illustrators Hi, I am a BA (Hons) Illustration degree student about to go into Third year. I have admired your illustrative work for a while and have been inspired to see your work being used on numerous applications and brands. I would be most grateful for any advice you could offer me for starting out as a illustrator, and would really appreciate if you could take the time to answer a few questions! How did you start your own freelance business? and how do you maintain your success? How do clients find your work/how did you draw in your clients? Do you have any advice on where or how i can get my work noticed by potential clients? Do you think its important to work from/live in a city? Thank you very much! Kind regards, Rebecca Williamson

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for your email, I'm really touched by all your nice words! I think your work looks great and just keep going is my main piece of advice :)

Where are you studying? I think it helps to be in a city when you start out, as networking and being part of events is important in the beginning. As you become more established it may not be so important.

Sadly these days everything is so competitive which means that illustrators need to develop their own unique style and voice in their work, and thats how you'll find most work. I really struggled with that at uni as I felt everyone had a 'style' but I tried to just enjoy the course and try loads of different stuff....and then eventually developed my style a few years after uni when I wasnt under so much pressure. So keep trying new things all the time, but when you show your portfolio and post on social media just be thoughtful about showing too many styles as this can confuse people.

I did a lot of art markets initially which helped to gauge what the general public were interested in, and sold paintings and prints there - it was hard work though! But for the commercial illustration side of things it much harder to get your work seen by buyers and publishers. Fig Taylor at the AOI does good folio crits, and you can also buy directories from the AOI to directly mail agencies etc with samples of your work.

I have an agent now and so they bring in work, but all of my work is just online blogs/sites and social media. I wouldn't worry too much at this stage though as its really important to just enjoy the rest of the course, make the most of your tutors and soak everything up! Hope thats of some help.

All the best, Georgina
