i chose this design as i think the black background really makes the multi-colour burst bold and vibrant, therefore emphasizes the fruity flavours in the drink. i think using the colour black will also make the product more suitable and appealing to a older demographic. However though this is my favourite stencil design layout, i feel the stencils themselves are weak in quality.

I want my j20 design to be more illustrative than digital as i feel the majority of packaging design is done digitallly. Below i have illustrated the fruits of the drink which i can scan into the computer and add to the packaging templates.

Experimenting with colour-burn. i was playing around with layering the line drawings and watercolour bursts, and discovered the 'colour burn' layering effect. i liked the way it shows the colours of the fruits through the lines of the drawings themselves.

to the left i have added a background colour to stop the white over powering. unfortunatly this didn't work as well as i had hoped with the colour-burn layering effect, the watercolour bursts have shown through the background colour, but on places other than the fruit.

I really like the repeated pattern of the fruits on this idea, however, I think the white background is to over powering and not appropriate for drinks packaging as when its in transportation it may scuff and mark the packaging which will be more prominent on white packaging

developing stencil idea:

going back to the stencil design,i played around with layering the fruit line drawings behind the stencil aswell. However, i feel i am steering away from a simple but effective design by using small detailed designs, I think this amount of detail in such a small stencil is to complex and will not necessarily be notice or appreciated. i think my design needs to be more straight forward as this will be easily remembered and recognized.

'

Simplifying idea down: though the idea above is to complex, i liked the combination of line drawings and the burst of watercolour you can see through the stencil as it illustrated both the fruits and the flavours (with colour) in an abstract way.

I wanted to create a bottle to represent how it will look with my labels on. As I am not I 00% confident using computer software I thought a simple outline with the pen tool on illustrator would be the simplest way to effective show the bottle shape digitally.

for the 4 pack design I wanted to continue the water colour bursts and the line drawings so the bottle and the packaging link together as a whole, and therefore can easily be identified. Adhering to the brief, I needed to make sure the colour green was present in my design so i have played around with added that too.

i felt my body logo design lacked definition and would therefore not stand out against the bottle, so i have played around with adding a lined boarder in the hope this will make the label bold. Again i have experimented with the green of J20 current brand identify above .Below I have also played around with adding black to aim to the older audience and to make a even bigger contrast between the other colours and the bottle .

i have decided to loose the line drawings from the body label as i think it makes the label look too crowded and therefore detracts attention away from the logo inside the label. I think by just using the watercolour bursts highlights the logo better with the bold colours making it a focal point.

Testing boarders and background colours.

i decided to stick with the black outline around the labels, i think this makes them bolder which will make them more eye catching. without a boarder it was hard to differentiate between the colour burst and the colour of the drink.

Packaging Development

i chose this light green colour background as its a colour present in both of the watercolour bursts and is a bright enough colour for the other elements on the pack to take focus. However this design does not show the dark green colour which is recognizable with the j20 brand.

using the iconic dark green instead: i think the contrast between the dark green and watercolour burst is to garish in the design above. i also feel the line drawings do not show up very well against the green, so i have experimented with using the dodge tool on Photoshop to brighten the area where the line drawing sits, however, i still feel this does not look right.

here i have Added the green to break up the negative space and to also to draw existing customers to the new product with the brands colour scheme.

i think the watercolour works best against a white background on this design, although i feel a colour background next to the bottles will make the packaging design look more complete , dismissing unecessesary negativespace

above i have experimented with what colour font works best against the green background to show the pack mandatory information. i have chosen the yellow/ orange to fit with the colour of the drinks I have used a lime green background colour as this colour was present in both of the watercolour bursts, it is also a lighter shade of J20's synonymous green colour. i think this tackles my problem of loosing the white background, yet still allows the line drawings and watercolour burst to stand out just as much as the white background. i also think the colours scheme gives of a mature vibe, as the colours are subtle and calming.

Finalized packaging

above i have played around with the positoning of the fruit for the orange and passionfrut packageing. This was difficult as i did not want them to over lap, but i also needed to leave room in the. same places as the mango and apple pack for the writing to sit so they would be identical in their layoutcreating a stronger brand recognition.

Now that I have changeg the background colour of the packaging from white to lime green, I felt I needed to add the same background to the labels on the bottles to make them match.
