ocated in the Texas panhandle where the southern plains meet the desert, Amarillo is the gateway to the vast, trail-lined Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the second largest canyon in the country. It’s also home to Cadillac Ranch, a publicly accessible art installation of 10 graffiti-covered Cadillacs facing nose-down, half buried in a field of off I-40. Created in 1974 by a group of artists known as The Ant Farm, the display has taken quite a bit of wear and tear over the years, becoming a ritual for many who bring their cans of spray paint leave their mark. If you go, be sure and take a photo or two, because each new batch of graffiti typically only lasts a few hours before it’s covered up by fresh paint.

ounded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, San Antonio became the first
chartered civil settlement in presentday Texas in 1731. The area was still part of the Spanish Empire, and later of the Mexican Republic. It’s Texas’ oldest municipality, having celebrated its 300th anniversary on May 1, 2018. Often known for The Alamo, an 18thcentury Spanish mission which has been preserved as a museum, which was the site of an infamous 1836 battle for Texan independence from Mexico. et's go to Luckenbach, Texas with Waylon and Willie and the boys goes the country song sung by Waylon Jennings. But what many don't know is that Luckenbach, though famous in name, is hardly more that map dot speck—an unincorporated community 13 miles from Fredericksburg in southeastern Gillespie County, Texas. Luckenbach's population reached a high of 492 in 1904, but by the 1960s it was almost a ghost town. A newspaper advertisement offering "town — pop. 3 — for sale" led actor Guich Koock and Hondo Crouch, a rancher and Texas folklorist, to buy Luckenbach for $30,000 in 1970, in partnership with Kathy Morgan. >>

Luckenback has been host to many unique festivals including the Luckenbach Women's Chili Cookoff and The 1st Luckenbach World's Fair, where Willie Nelson made a surprise appearance. In the 1990s, the town was host to several of Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnics. Today Luckenbach maintains a ghost-town feel with its small population and strong western aesthetic. One of its two main buildings houses the remnants of a post office, a

working saloon, and a general store. The other is the dance hall. The post office was closed on April 30, 1971, and its zip code (78647) was retired. The general store remains active as a souvenir shop where visitors can purchase a variety of items, including merchandise featuring the town's motto "Everybody's Somebody in Luckenbach", postcards, T-shirts, sarcastic and humorous signs, and the local newspaper, the 8-page monthly Luckenbach Moon.
