Ready, Set, Write! NEW!
3, 2, 1 Blast Off! NEW! Ages 3-5 & Adult. 1 hour class. Math readiness is more than counting to 20 and knowing shapes. Math is estimating and measuring, sorting and classifying, putting items in order and predicting what comes next. We’ll even collect and share data with bar graphs and pie charts. Our learning centers are revised each week, allowing children to experiment and practice their math readiness skills. Adults come away with new ideas to practice math skills in every-day life. New skills are reinforced during group time for the last half of class. Because preschoolers are full of energy, we’ll also learn through songs and rhythm. Instructor: Shanda Trent. 7 weeks.
Ages 3-5 & Adult. 1 hour class. Through guided play, you and your child learn & practice becoming a writer. Each week we practice fine motor skills and letter recognition for half an hour in varied ways that are easy to implement at home. Then, we do large group activities, especially writing together. One component to learning to write is understanding that it's just "talk written down." We also use components from "Handwriting Without Tears," a curriculum widely used in the schools. These tools help your child feel more confident in her first efforts to be a writer. Shanda has worked with young children for 30 years and has a large repertoire of fun ways to playfully learn early literacy skills. Hands-on class with plenty of fun take-home ideas to introduce early writing skills. Instructor: Shanda Trent. 7 weeks.

Mad Science
Energy, Motion and Nature
Questions? Call 734-994-2300, ext. 53234 Grades 1-5. Energy, Motion and Nature takes students on a journey through exploring ecosystems, defying gravity, discovering electricity and more! From mystifying magnets to marvelous molecular bonds, junior scientist use hands-on activities and amazing demonstrations to discover physics, ecology, chemistry, and the world around us! Instructor: Mad Science staff. 6 weeks.
Mad Science classes cover these six areas:
Earthworks Dig into Earth science! Check out rock samples to find out how they were made and where they were formed. Inspect minerals to see them fluoresce. Learn what causes bends and breaks in the Earth’s solid rock layer. Use the Experitube Take-Home to see sediment settle into layers!
Current Events Get charged up about the science of current electricity! Learn how tiny invisible particles power everything from the fridge to the radio. Complete the circuit to light a bulb and sound a buzzer. Experiment to find out what conducts and what doesn't. Build and take home a Circuit Maze to test family and friends.
Matter of Fact What’s smaller than small? Atoms and molecules! Students learn how atoms combine to make molecules and examine molecular bonding using molecule models. What’s the difference between a chemical and physical change? Students will be able to tell you after mixing up their very own Mad Science Putty!
All About Animals It’s a zoo in here! Get ready to learn about the incredible and diverse animal kingdom! After learning how animals adapt to their habitat through specialized feet, fur and feathers, students gain hands-on experience with real claw and tooth replicas! Activities about classification, camouflage, and life cycles round out this introduction to zoology. Ready to step into their shoes? Students will create their own animal track casts to take home!
Exploring Ecosystems
Fundamental Forces Time to find out what forces make the universe tick! Hands-on investigation leads students to learn about gravity, inertia, and centripetal force. Students use a bike wheel gyroscope, a coin-spinning vortex and the amazing balloon centrifuge. Hold on tight!
Let’s explore the fascinating world around us! While learning about the interconnections that exist between all living things – including humans! – this class provides an opportunity to develop scientific skills through inquiry based instructional methods. Young ecologists build an Eco-Cube and receive a take-home journal so they can continue the ecology adventure at home!

Flying Toys Ready, Set, Move NEW! Grades 3-5. Explore the fundamentals of physics with roller coasters, puff cars, flying toys, and more! Students learn about science behind movement as they design, create, and test several projects throughout the weeks. Every class is full of fun experiments, hands-on activities, take-home projects and demos! Instructor: Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum staff. 6 weeks.
Ready, Set, Move includes these six topics
Explore the physics of flight as students design, build and test some of their favorite flying toys. How high can the rocket fly? Will the boomerang come back? Students find out how scientists use the four forces of flight to keep their creations up in the air. Students take home their creations at the end of the day.
The Wind Beneath our Wheels Learn about how wind energy as students design and create puff cars. They see how far their cars can travel with just one puff of air. Students take home their creation at the end of the day and try again at home!
Move like an Egyptian
Energy Transfer Learn about the importance of energy as students build their own roller coaster! One hill? Two loops? A jump? See if the laws of physics can help to build the roller coaster of their dreams.
Students learn about the ancient methods of moving objects. See how physics can help them move across water, land, and air as they design and build boats and catapults.
Movement Olympics
All About That Weight Dive into data collection for this day of engineering! Build a car and see how weight affects the speed of car, how force relates to motion and how to make cars move the fastest.
Learn about how human body moves as students challenge each other in the Movement Olympics! A few obstacle courses will be set up for students to navigate through and see how their body allows them to move and win the gold medal!

Bully Proofing Ages 3-12 years with parent. This is a unique opportunity for you to learn and bond together with your child in a physical activity that stresses fun, fitness and fundamentals. Your child will become more self confident and learn self control, while improving your parent-child relationship. Children will develop physical problem-solving skills that can transfer to many areas of their lives. We use play-based activities and role-playing to practice Judo/Jujitsu-based self-defense techniques. Most martial arts programs rely on striking the attacker with violent punches, kicks, knees and elbows, but we take a different approach. All the techniques are purely defensive and avoid striking. We look forward to providing you and your child with a memorable learning experience. Instructor: Frank Gerlitz, PhD. 5 Blackbelt Judo, 7 Blackbelt Jujitsu. 6 weeks. ID# 3315.701 FEE: $49
