Dynamic Houston chef and restaurateur Lance Fegen jumped in as one of our original Chefs Advisory Board members back in 2006, helping to develop recipes still used in our classes today. Chef Lance didn’t hesitate to volunteer in the classroom at N.Q. Henderson Elementary during those early years, and has hosted field trips to his restaurants and many dinners benefitting Recipe for Success. “At the time that Gracie was launching Recipe for Success, I had just started a family and was enjoying spending time with my own kids,” says Chef Fegen. “I had so much good in my life that I wanted to give some of that to others. Growing up, my mom took good care of us, especially with her cooking, says Fegen. “I know not all kids have that, so it’s great to be able to pass those lessons along to the students. Once you get into the Recipe for Success classroom you fall in love with the kids and their learning process. It really becomes a part of you—the effort you give to the kids you get back tenfold.”

VEGOUT!

Join us on Monday, February 29 for a twitter chat to learn all about taking the VegOut! with your kids! Recipe for Success and Kids Cook Monday are teaming up to get everyone to VegOut! with us in March. The Kids Cook Monday initiative encourages families to set aside the first night of every week for cooking and eating together as a family. When kids pitch in to make meals, they’re empowered to consider the portions, the vitamins and the nutrients of what they’re eating. And since the family that cooks together eats together, parents can more easily check in with their children during dinner about other aspects of their lives. We’ll have fun, kid-proof recipes, tips, tricks and conversation starters to get the whole family together cooking and eating their veggies! And tune into updates with veggies ideas to keep Kids Cooking all month long!

THE FAMILY DINNER PROJECT

The Family Dinner Project is a growing movement of food, fun and conversation about things that matter—something we at Recipe for Success heartily support. We are thrilled to partner with this Harvard University-based nonprofit organization. Over the past 15 years, research has shown what parents have known for a long time: Sharing a fun family meal is good for the spirit, brain and health of all family members. Join us for a Twitter chat on February 25 to answer all your dinner time questions—like tips for setting dinnertime goals, overcoming obstacles such as conflicting schedules and engaging everyone in meaningful conversation—not to mention how a program like VegOut! can bring the family together in a fun and healthy food adventure. FRESHLY HATCHED LIFE LESSONS

15

Our students at Cedar Brook Elementary School had the opportunity to see another life cycle this month. They’re already accustomed to seeing plants growing, but thanks to The Garden Hen, these lucky students experienced the life cycle of a chicken! We had a chance to catch up with them on Day 21 of their threeweek Project Life Cycle program to watch chickens hatch! Kindergarten teacher, Esmeralda Warshaw, said “Watching the kids hold these chicks that they had help incubate was priceless. Having them understand the full life cycle of getting the egg to your plate is something they’ll have with them for the rest of their lives.” The kids learned invaluable lessons in the life cycle as they witnessed three weeks of incubation and the hatch. The program included live demos from Farmer Mike, a delicious egg, kale and onion cooking demo from one of our resident Seed-to-Plate Instructors and, of course, lots of adorable baby chicks! FEBRUARY 2016 VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

KAY DELAMATER Delightful and dedicated volunteer Kay DeLaMater first learned about Recipe for Success in 2012 while searching volunteerhouston.org and has been donating her time and energy as an Office Star at RecipeHouse ever since. “I was between jobs and looking for opportunities to volunteer close to my home,” explains Kay. “Recipe for Success was a good match because my whole life centers on food. My love of healthy food began in childhood—that’s when we need to instill good eating habits. Children by nature are so wonderfully open to new ideas and flexible in their habits.” Kay shares her dreams for the organization over the next 10 years. “I’d like to see continued growth of programs such as the VegOut! 30 Ways in 30 Days Challenge,” says Kay. “It’s a fun way for the adult community to be involved in the Foundation’s mission. Adults ultimately determine children’s diets. If we improve our eating habits, we can lead children by example.” READ MORE ABOUT KAY’S FUN EXPERIENCES VOLUNTEERING WITH US.

CHEF JUSTIN TEACHES POST OAK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CULINARY ARTS Houston’s Post Oak High School seeks to provide unique opportunities for students to cultivate real-life experiences. The school’s teaching methods nourish students’ diverse interests, helping them identify personal passions and actively prepare for university and for life beyond school. For three weeks each January, Post Oak High School students participate in an intensive study program, called J-Term. So when Post Oak High School teacher Benjamin Preston contacted our Culinary Education Coordinator, Chef Justin Kouri, about doing a J-Term course at RecipeHouse, he welcomed the idea and had a blast hosting the 16 high school students in a three-week course in the culinary arts. “My goal was to give the students a comprehensive view of the food industry,” says Chef Justin. BEN FERREIRA AND H-E-B

While attending an event at RecipeHouse with H-E-B Houston Division President Scott McCelland, Ben Ferreira met Gracie Cavnar and learned about the mission of Recipe for Success. “We watched a video about the programs, which were quite gripping to me,” says Ferreira. As the Regional Director of Produce and Floral for H-E-B, he oversees every aspect of this major business segment in more than 80 area stores where leads a team of 100+ department managers. And robustly supports local agriculture by developing business relationships with local growers. “After I had the opportunity to judge the Iron Chef completion at MacGregor Elementary I was hooked,” says Ferreira. “It was so great to see the kids who were so proud of crops they had grown and then watch them create a dish—without even a recipe to start with. That solidified my impressions of Recipe for Success. I am pleased to be a liaison for H-E-B and happy to make my personal contributions to the board,” says Ferreira READ MORE ABOUT BEN, HIS EXPERIENCES ON THE BOARD & THE FUTURE OF H-E-B.

PEOPLE OF RECIPE FOR SUCCESS BEN FERREIRA BOARD MEMBER, FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION & HOPE FARMS COMMITTEES For me the real beauty is the connection to my own personal experience. That’s what drew me in. Gracie’s passion is also very motivating. She does so much more than talk about it. There’s no better way to combat childhood obesity. This has been a tremendous growth experience for me and I am so pleased to be involved with Recipe for Success.

HONI BOUDREAUX FORMER BOARD MEMBER, HOPE FARMS COMMITTEE MEMBER I’m extremely motivated by the belief that all children need exposure to good food, healthy food and that our whole country has gotten away from good eating and good habits. I’m thrilled that we’re trying hard to bring food, meals, family, school, back to good eating, rather than just fast, quick, not thinking it through. I’m fascinated to see just how far Gracie can take this thing. The progress and the program over the past 10 years have moved at supersonic pace. All of them, successfully. She’s amazing. It’s an amazing foundation to work for and with. 18

AMY ANTON FOUNDING BOARD MEMBER, CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER I really love getting into the classroom with the kids and cooking with them. There’s just nothing like it. When they make something new that they have never had, and they all sit at that long table and all say bon appetite and try something that they’ve never had before. That’s really inspiring.

ROBERT DEL GRANDE FOUNDING CHEFS ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER I really love getting into the classroom with the kids and It’s a great opportunity. I would tell [chefs] first it’s a great opportunity to learn something from fourth graders and young kids who will ask you questions you never thought of to answer, so it will strengthen your skills. Chefs … certainly have the skills to teach. I think part of Recipe for Success is to…create in school those “grandmother” opportunities that we’ve sort of lost, where someone shows you how to do it. 2011-2012

YEAR SEVEN

Stepping Up To A National Platform GRACIE CAVNAR If it seemed like 2010-11 was a year of other folks making films and writing about what we were doing, then this year might best be described as one when we put ourselves under the microscope and filmed our observations. We had to perfect how to train remote instructors, whom we might never meet face-to-face, and inspire them to exuberantly adopt our teaching methods for Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™. How do you teach passion? We decided that each of our training modules should be anchored with a film. Thanks to BMC we knocked out the easy part early—filming 30 “tops and tails”, which meant one 12 hour day of me in a studio in front of a green screen, talking to a camera like it was my most treasured employee. 60 sessions of “today we will learn how to….and, today we learned to…” Then we spent the summer designing the innards and writing scripts for the middle of 30 training films; by August, I was recording 30 voiceovers—each 12-15 minutes long. We took thousands of photographs—how to slice, measure, stir, mix, assemble. These how-to photos were critical for our training site, but we also decided to use many of them in my Eat It! Food Adventures cookbook. The entire summer –when we weren’t recording and photographing for instructor training, we were creating, testing and photographing recipes for the cookbook. Writers, videographers, artists, webmasters and technical advisors joined our efforts. 20

For the rest of the year, we maneuvered that content into our online training site and book. We finalized four training modules and tested them. We put all of our materials through another round of review with curriculum developers and aligned each lesson plan and worksheet with both TEKS and Common Core grade level learning objectives. And we secured six pilot sites to further test our Affiliate Partner construct, including several KIPPs in Houston Hogan’s Kids in Washington DC. In the meantime, we had plenty of adventures of our own: Locally we helped create the Grocers’ Task Force; and joined Mayor Parker to establish a permanent city committee focused on health. We expanded Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™ to more Houston school districts. We taught Houston Firemen to cook, and we opened RecipeHouse to provide cooking classes for all, including Girl Scouts and summer campers. We even rolled out an Art Car, thanks to donor Curry Glassell and artist William Betts! We enjoyed beautiful news features—not about our parties but about our work—in the Houston Chronicle, PaperCity and CultureMap. Comcast filmed and Houston Matters told our story. On the bigger stage, we spoke at the Texas Action for Healthy Kids Annual Conference; the Texas Medical Association Foundation declared us a “Houston Health Leader;” Self Magazine and Town&Country both saluted our work with awards and feature stories, and we were on the Today Show. And as a harbinger of things to come, The US Conference of Mayors awarded us a $25,000 planning grant for our Hope Farms Rolling Green Market and we hatched an idea to encourage more people—not just kids—to eat healthier. We called it VegOut! 21
