The Hotel Concierge Society Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand welcomes you to The Concierges Finest Recommendations for your New Zealand Holiday: Recommend New Zealand Magazine.
History of Les Clefs d’Or In 12th Century France, the “compte des cierges” (“keeper of the candles”) served in the grand palaces and castles as the gatekeeper or head of the staff, who held the keys for the house. He greeted a palace’s visiting nobility as they arrived, and catered to their every whim. In the grand hotels of Europe, the idea of a “Concierge” survived through the centuries as the palaces evolved into hotels and as the “tourism” industry developed. In 1929 the legendary Parisian Concierge Ferdinand Gillet called together his counterparts across Europe to discuss ways they could co-operate to serve their guests. The Les Clefs d’Or (“keys of gold”) society was founded on the principals of integrity, friendship and professionalism, and the members adopted the golden keys to symbolise the opening of doors for their guests. Today members are recognised by the Crossed Golden Key lapel pins, worn on their jackets, while on duty at the Concierge desk. Today, this organisation has spread to 40 nations and comprises more than 3500 members worldwide. The spirit of this network is embodied in the credo, “In Service through Friendship.”
Our Role Associated to the Union International Hotel Concierges ‘Les Clefs d’Or’, the Hotel Concierge Society Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand is a non-profit, non-political, professional association consisting of the finest hotel Concierges throughout New Zealand. The role of the Society is to support the

elcome to the Third Edition of Recommend New Zealand Magazine – The Concierges Guide to the very best of New Zealand.
The Hotel Concierge Society Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand, is a non-profit, non-political professional association, with the country’s best hotel Concierges as members. As a national chapter of the prestigious Union Internationale des Concierges d‘Hotels Les Clefs d’Or, we have the responsibility of spreading the word in New Zealand of the ideals and ethics of our society, promoting professionalism in the hospitality and tourism industry through the concept of “service through friendship”. This means that we must set an example to the industry as a whole, displaying the highest standards of professionalism, honesty and integrity, and above all friendship in our dealings with not only our guests, but within our hotels, and with our many and varied “suppliers”, who contribute to New Zealand’s outstanding success as a tourism and business destination. Recommend New Zealand Magazine is one way we, as an organisation, can contribute by helping promote those we recommend daily, the companies and suppliers who uphold the highest standards of service and attention to detail, and help the Concierges of New Zealand exceed the expectations of our

THE ESSENCE OF PLACE...
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Kiwi ingenuity: This is the idea that New Zealanders display a MacGyver-like ability to solve any problem, often using unconventional means or whatever happens to be lying around. This is also described as the Number 8 wire mentality, which means that anything can be made or fixed with basic or everyday materials. Our Magazine “Recommend New Zealand” promotes and talks about International Luxury Brands but also profiles the very best products and activities in New Zealand that have been born out of our “Kiwi ingenuity” mentality. Who ever would have thought of piping moisturiser through a special contraption that is easily installed into most types of showers... manufactured in New Zealand (see our NZ Made feature on Page 26), I tested this ingenious product, and thought to myself, I am very privileged and proud to be able to showcase the interesting products, people and places that New Zealand has on offer and I personally hope that you (our great readers) experience as much as you can during your New Zealand holidays!

Member Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand Chief Concierge: InterContinental Hotel, Wellington
Member Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand Chief Concierge: Rydges Hotel, Christchurch
Member Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand Leisure Concierge: Crowne Plaza Queenstown
Roberto is a native of Cartagena, Colombia where he worked in the Music Industry for 10 years, arriving in New Zealand when he was 29 to visit some family that were living here, “when I arrived I could not speak a word of English but thanks to generous people, I was given the opportunity to do work experience in hospitality in Auckland which empowered me to be at my best.” 10 years on, Roberto now heads a team of 11 at the Westin Hotel including Porters and Concierges. “We welcome and make guests feel at home once they arrive at the hotel, our Concierges book limousine transfers, tours outside and around Auckland, control the Valet Service and apply new procedures in order to answer questions to exceed our guests’ expectations. “NO” is not an option at the Westin. We deliver instinctive opportunities, and preserve our guests' wellness in their travels. The most memorable moment in my job... looking after David Beckham, John Travolta and Alicia Keys in the same year. They trusted my recommendations and advice creating individual moments that made them feel alive and at their best.”
David has been working for InterContinental for the last 4 years. He and his partner moved to New Zealand and fell in love with it straight away. “Seven of us travelled around the South Island in a vehicle doing the tourist routes, which was great fun and a fantastic way to see everything. Last summer we also did all of the North Island from Cape Reinga to Taupo, including the beautiful Coromandel... I think I am still a tourist at heart. In Wellington, we are lucky to live in the best capital city in the world – the size of the city, the vibrant shops, cafes, restaurants, art galleries and Museums set Wellington apart from the other cities. The people are so friendly and welcoming. As a Concierge we get to meet interesting people, not just the rich and famous but great holiday visitors and corporate guests, which often become regulars. I am proud to have meet Geoff Boycott, my hero who played for Yorkshire and England Cricket, also Michael Parkinson and Michael Palin (Monty Python) all good Yorkshire men!"
Mic cemented his position and passion for the Concierge role at the Como Boutique Hotel in Melbourne. He learnt a great deal about providing 5 star service to guests including many in show business “I was showing people to their rooms and they would ask where a good restaurant was or where they should go for a day trip. I fell in love with the work and realised it was in my character to become a Concierge. My family and I decided to have a lifestyle change and I moved with my partner and daughter to Christchurch, we had visited Christchurch many times and fell in love with the city.”
With over six years in the role as the Leisure Concierge at the Crowne Plaza in Queenstown, Nathan has enjoyed amazing experiences, from jet boating to helicopter rides and dining at some of New Zealand’s finest restaurants, through to playing golf on championship courses. Nathan says “Queenstown is such an incredibly beautiful place and I am not surprised the region I work in features in so many Hollywood blockbuster films.” Nathan ensures his guests have a fantastic time while they’re in Queenstown; “I have had the opportunity to personally experience most of the great activities Queenstown has to offer, so I can match the perfect activity to every single one of our guests.” Nathan has chosen to base himself in Queenstown, also known as ‘The Adventure Capital of the World’, because of its natural beauty, breath taking scenery and wide range of adrenalin activities. “Trust me, you will never get bored of this place, if you are not the adventurous type and are just looking for a relaxing time, there are plenty of ways to unwind.”

In 2003 while working at the Rydges Hotel in Christchurch Mic became a member of the Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand, this was his final ambition in getting recognition as a professional career Concierge.
“Christchurch and Rydges Hotel has been a great city to work and live in – it is so compact that you do not have to walk far to see some great sights, even small day trips are only 1½ hours comfortable drive.” Les Clefs d ’Or New Zealand

ear friends, welcome to our beautiful New Zealand and to the third edition of Recommend New Zealand Magazine, showcasing what makes New Zealand such a fantastic destination. Internationally, UICH Les Clefs d’Or has been organised into geographical zones to aid efficiency and assist with the growth of the organisation worldwide. In 2009, I was honoured to assume the role of Zone Director for Oceania. This comes with the responsibility of fostering closer relationships between the Concierges in Australia and New Zealand. As an organisation, we are also pooling our resources and initiatives towards 2013, when our Land of the Long White Cloud, Aotearoa, will host the 60th International UICH Les Clefs d’Or Congress in beautiful Queenstown. It will be a great opportunity to not only showcase this sophisticated holiday resort during the five day conference, but also Oceania. The Fore-word on GolF WITH STEVE WILLIAMS This issue we feature the most famous Caddy in the World - Steve Williams, a born and bred New Zealander, since 1999 Steve has been the regular caddy for Tiger Woods. Steve used part of his earnings from working with Tiger Woods to start a charitable foundation to assist junior golfers in his homeland. This charitable involvement was cited in his appointment as Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Steve also indulges a long-time passion for Speedway Racing, and was the national Super Saloon car champion for 2005/2006.
18
Steve, what do you rate as the golf course with the most stunning scenery in New Zealand? I think Jacks Point in Queenstown has stunning scenery from the Alps to the Lakes.
What is the most unpleasant part of being an International Caddy? Travelling so frequently and all the hiccups along the way that occur when you travel can be most unpleasant. With over 400 golf courses in New Zealand, we have many unique country courses such as the Rangatira Golf Club that has an electrically powered cable car which takes you from the 18th green back up to the club house, what is the most unique feature you have ever seen on a New Zealand Golf Course? Growing up as a kid in Paraparaumu it was always unique to play at Titahi Bay with sheep and electric fences around the greens. We loved to play there it was so different.
Jack’s Point, Golf Course, Queenstown, New Zealand
Besides a putter, if you could only take two clubs on a round of golf with you which would they be? I would take a hybrid and a nine iron. The Steve Williams Foundation was born in 2001. A board of Trustees was set up including Steve’s wife Kirsty Williams, the Foundation’s CEO. The Foundation aims to help juniors throughout New Zealand particularly those in remote areas and the smaller provinces that struggle for sponsorship. You can find out more about Steve Williams and his foundation check out his website www.kiwicaddy.com and donations for The Steve Williams Foundation can be mailed to: PO Box 444, Kumeu, Auckland 0841, NZ

DEGUSTATION
MT. DIFFICULTY
AMISFIELD BISTRO
BANNOCKBURN
QUEENSTOWN
here are many picturesque places in Central Otago. For wine lovers, the short trip from central Queenstown to the outstanding wine region of Bannockburn is a must. The drive through the Kawarau Gorge is one of New Zealand’s most scenic. Make sure you stop alongside the Roaring Meg for magnificent landscape views.
he Amisfield Wine Company Bistro and Cellar door, located at Lake Hayes, a 10 minute drive from central Queenstown, is a wine and food destination not to be missed. Indulge.
T
The Mt Difficulty Cellar Door and Restaurant is nestled in the Bannockburn hills. The building – concrete and cedar – is deliberately simple as nothing can upstage the earthy views of the patchwork vineyard plains. A setting so glorious, it has to be one of New Zealand’s best eating experiences. Established in 1992, Mt Difficulty vineyards are amongst the earliest planted in Bannockburn, Central Otago. The estate has continually produced outstanding, award winning wines.
T
The multi-award winning Pinot Noir 2007 received Gold at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Show 2009. General Manager, Fleur Caulton describes it as distinguished, dense and rich. The tasting room is relaxed. No oenomania here. The staff convey their knowledge with enthusiasm rather than superiority. “There is quality across all our varieties,” one shared. “But the Pinot Noir is the star. Layers of flavour, ageability, complexity – it’s all there.” The Bistro is a buzzy place and the menu changes daily. The food is organic, locally sourced and partners the wines perfectly.
20
The chef’s food is seasonal, light, locally sourced (when available) and perfectly matched to the wines. The duck, slow roasted in pinot noir, was a small marvel: dark, crispy skin and soft, moist meat were braced with flat mushrooms, green beans and a velvety, just-sweet-enough raspberry and cassis sauce. This winery lunch menu also has a selection of delicious platters. Highlights of our platter included: antipasti, cold-smoked river salmon, wild boar terrine, fig and pinot noir chutney, Evansdale smoked brie and homemade gingerbread with blue cheese. All delicious. For the duck, Emma Lawton, Cellar Door Assistant Manager, recommended the Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir 2008, their flagship pinot. “It reflects a warmer growing season with hints of cherry, blackberry, and Christmas cake spice”. The Pinot Gris 2009 is their most popular white wine, blended from five estate vineyards. Aromas of nectarine, peach blossom and pear. Full, creamy fruit on the mid-palate with a rich, stonefruit mineral finish. It was absolutely perfect with the platter. The menu also offers gluten free options. Editor’s Note: Mt. Difficulty cover all budgets. They have delicious platters from just $22.50. Or make the day truly special by taking a helicopter to the winery from Queenstown, the scenic flight is breath-taking! Mt Difficulty Cellar Door open 7 days, 10.30am – 4.30pm, Mt Difficulty Restaurant open 7 days (reservations essential) 12noon to 3pm, 73 Felton Road, Bannockburn – 5km’s from Cromwell, Phone 03 445 445 3445 extn 1
We went for the ‘Trust the Chef’ menu, which includes a selection of dishes chosen by the chef based on the freshest ingredients available – a popular choice for many diners. A special of the day was feathery, crispy fried whitebait with lemon, rocket and a celeriac/coriander mayonnaise. The accompanying glass of chilled Saignee Rose 2009 was all wow. Another special was the dissolvingly tender lamb cutlets with smoked eggplant, buttery mash, roasted red capsicum and sweet-spice jus. The paired wine was the standout Pinot Noir 2007. All bread is handmade on site. The sourdough starter originates from the wild yeasts produced by Amisfield’s first vintage grapes of 2002 - another innovative touch.
Editors Tip: Order a glass (or bottle) of Pinot, and take time to sit in the garden and soak up the beauty of the wine and the region. Even on the coldest day, it’s a stunning setting.
Amisfield Tasting Room & Wine Shop open 7 days, 10am-6pm, Amisfield Bistro open Tues–Sun 11.30am-8pm (last bookings 6pm), 10 Lake Hayes Road, RD 1, Queenstown, Phone 03 442 0556

NEW ZEALAND BOATING
ALL YEAR ROUND WORLD CLASS MARINE EXPERIENCES
Don’t think twice about embarking on a Yacht, Jet Boat or Launch over winter! New Zealand has fantastic options offering comfortable, exciting, marine and scenic experiences. Due to New Zealand’s temperate climate our country is all year round Boating destination. In winter the breeze can be more consistent making sailing a great option, especially on the America’s Cup Yachts in the Auckland Viaduct Harbour, a consistent breeze equals better sailing! Prolonged settled weather in winter presents clear blue sky days that the South Island, especially, is synonymous for.
with the snow capped mountains in the background. This makes for a stunning backdrop when out viewing the majestic marine life. Apart from the different species of marine life you can see of the Kaikoura coastline there is also the opportunity to see dusky dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and many different species of marine birds such as petrels, prions, shearwaters, mollymawks and even the largest seabird in flight today – the wandering albatross.

With Whales migrating north over summer the Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari have increased sightings of whales over winter, they come closer to Auckland so there is a higher chance of success and many times I have sat in my office on the Waterfront in Auckland, in winter and watched the whales slowly glide by, in the inner Auckland Harbour. With the more settled weather in winter this can give greater stability to the Catamarans that take you out for marine mammal viewings in Auckland and the Bay of Islands.
Fullers GreatSights and Dolphin Discoveries in the Bay of Islands offer purpose built Dolphin Swimming boats all year round with a great mixture of indoor and outdoor seating catering to all weather conditions. The winter provides a great chance to see additional wildlife and don’t be put off swimming with the dolphins in winter as wetsuits are provided to keep you warm and hot soup is served straight after your swim!
The Coastal Classic offers everyone the ultimate winter yacht racing experience when on Friday 22 October 2010, approximately 250 yachts compete in the largest coastal yacht race in the Southern Hemisphere. You can be a part of this world renowned race by booking a space on Explore NZ’s Lion New Zealand charter, or if you wish to just be a spectator, North Head in Devonport or Bastion Point on Tamaki Drive in Central Auckland are great spots to snap some photos of the start line.
In Kaikoura the sperm whales feed off the coastline all year round, but in the winter months not only are the sperm whales found to be feeding close inshore due to groper spawning along the continental shelf but you can also view humpback whales on their annual migration to the warmer waters, places like Tonga & Australia. This migration is generally between the months of Jun/Jul/Aug. This time of the year is not only special due to the abundance of marine life present but is also very beautiful

Another great winter experience which is especially cosy is the Pride of Auckland Dinner Cruises, where dinner is served below deck where it is very warm and you get to go above deck whenever you like throughout the cruise, I experienced this trip in Winter and it was the perfect mix of relaxation combined with experiencing the elements of winter on the water in a great deal of comfort. All jet boat companies will give you spray coats to wear in winter but at Dart River Jet Safaris in Queenstown the spray coats are fleece lined for additional comfort in winter. Editors tip... make sure you wear a warm woolly hat!
25
In Winter there are spectacular ice formations on the rock walls of the Shotover Jet Canyons and the water is crystal clear - you can see every pebble on the river bed your speeding over, in as little as 10cms. Many jet boat companies in New Zealand (especially in the South Island) feature heated handrails to keep your hands toasty while you get to marvel at amazing snow covered peaks, as long as you have your extremities warmed up (hands, feet and head) jet boating is a comfortable New Zealand winter experience. Check out this glorious picture of the Shotover Jet Base in Winter – spectacular! From the 1st of October every year the Iripipi Cruise operates in the Bay of Islands with Fullers GreatSights, however the weather can still be a bit cold at that time of year, but there is no chance the weather will effect you on this cruise, with your own overnight deluxe cabin and all the comforts of home onboard, this is an exceptional way to experience the very best of what New Zealand has to offer, no matter what the climate. Reinforcing New Zealand’s attractiveness as an all year round Boating Destination with World Class options! Story by Editor in Chief Charlotte Carlyle Wilson

WAIHEKE ISLAND
MAD ABOUT MUDBRICK Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant has been a favourite for many Aucklander’s since it’s inception; a special destination where thousands of people have celebrated their weddings, birthdays, corporate and personal triumphs. The fairy lights twinkle everyday of the year at Mudbrick in a way that lights up your soul, topped with exceptional food and wine. You cannot come to Auckland and miss this dream culinary experience. When I phoned to book our table at the Mudrick for a Saturday afternoon, Brooke advised me that a 1.30pm start would not be enough time to really sit back and enjoy our experience... and she was right. Despite our 12.30pm start and 4pm finish we could have spent another 2 hours revelling in Jasons attentive service, the chef’s glorious food and the Jones’s succulent wines.
27
Our 5 courses started with a delightful Amuse-bouche, a gorgeous taste of seared veal set on a tile, compliments of the Chef. We decided to only order Mudbrick wines that afternoon and we were not disappointed when the first bottle arrived, the Mudbrick N.V. Marlborough bubbles, light, not too sweet and a great introduction to what was going to be a wonderful afternoon!
I was slightly familiar with the Te Matuku Bay Oyster Farm located on Waiheke Island in a Marine Reserve, so decided to give them a try as my entrée, and had there been a competition of who ordered the best entrée I would have won! They were absolutely divine, freshly shucked every day to order, soaked in gin with horseradish, it was like tasting a piece of heaven. Next came the sorbets (which were complimentary). Apple sorbet with rhubarb jelly and a feijoa foam, served in shot glasses with a spoon. The colour and taste was 5 star! Then the main event arrived. I had ordered the beef fillet which I matched with the Mudbrick Reserve Pinot Noir 2009 (grapes are sourced from the renowned Gibbston Valley grape growers in Central Otago) with highlights of raspberry, this was the perfect compliment to my beef. My friend ordered the snapper (pictured here) and I was rather jealous. She won the prize for prettiest main course. We had ordered a double serving of the truffle mash as our side dish, which was devoured at lightning speed. We all love a good truffle mash and we were fighting over this one!
www.hotelconciergesocietynz.org
It was my friend’s birthday that day and as an example of the vibe that goes on at Mudbrick when we started singing happy birthday to her, the table of 10 next door chimed in, in support. This is another great example of how wonderful Mudbrick feels.
I will never forget the day when I stood at my friends wedding in the grounds of this vineyard, a world away from Auckland, but with the Sky Tower in full view. If you are coming to Auckland, you have to visit my personal mecca, Mudbrick! Humble owners, Nick and Robyn Jones, obviously have an excellent nose for wine, wonderful taste in building design, nurture exceptional gardens where herbs and flowers are picked everyday to decorate and enhance the meals, along with a well chosen team to represent their dreams and aspirations. My immediate thought was, if you don’t book now for Rugby World Cup... you will miss out!
THE FACTS
Waiheke Island is a short 40 minute scenic ferry ride from Downtown Auckland, ferries depart nearly every hour. Bookings Phone 09 377 4406. If you love to walk, you can catch a bus from the Ferry on Waiheke to Oneroa, and then walk to Mudbrick, or there are taxis waiting at the Ferry to take you straight to Mudbrick. If you don’t have the time or maybe the budget for a leisurely lunch you can still visit the Mudbrick Vineyards cellar door for wine tasting and Platters or just Fries with Aoili which is a very affordable option, the views from the Cellar Door and the Restaurant are some of the best you will see on Waiheke Island and you don’t need to book to visit their Cellar Door. www.mudbrick.co.nz Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant, Church Bay Road, Oneroa, Waiheke Island, Phone 09 372 9050 Review by Editor in Chief | Charlotte Carlyle Wilson

The natural pearls of the South Pacific are treasured throughout the world for their exquisite colour and lustre. Jean Daniel Robert of Pounamu Pearl in Queenstown creates individual pieces of pearl jewellery as art combined with the finest of precious metals and gems.
J
ean Daniel Robert’s passion for pearls began while managing a pearl farm in the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia. Today he and business partner Rob Lynes travel to the pearl farms at harvest time to handpick the best pearls. “This way”, says Jean Daniel, “we can pre-select only the finest pearls for our clients, as well as maintain our passion for diving. Mr Robert’s advice on grading pearls: Pearls come in different shapes e.g. Round, Semi Round, Drop, Button, Circle or Baroque. Blemishes help dictate the grade of the pearl. AAA No blemishes & undrilled. AA One blemish or drilled. A is 75% unblemished. B is 50% unblemished. C is over 50% blemished. NORTH OF AUCKLAND The most popular activity to undertake during a visitor’s travels in New Zealand is sightseeing. This is due to the amazing scenery that New Zealand offers and is well documented in how New Zealand markets itself to the world in the “100% Pure” marketing campaigns. The most outstanding sightseeing destinations, North of Auckland and easily accessible are: • C ape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach – try sandboarding – this is tremendous fun no matter what your age! • T he Bay of Islands – renowned for swimming with the dolphins. • T he Grand Cathedral Cave in the Bay of Islands – “Hole in the Rock”. • M atakana Coast with it’s Goat Island Marine Reserve and Pakiri Beach which has gorgeous white sand and clean clear water. There are three areas North of Auckland we recommend you visit while in New Zealand, from the top of the North Island down:
NORTH OF Auckland
Cape Reinga with it’s historic lighthouse marks the extreme north-western point of New Zealand. Out to sea lies the Columbia Bank maelstrom where the Tasman and the Pacific meet - sometimes producing waves more than 10 metres high. Visit the famous 90 Mile Beach, one of the most famous surfcasting beaches in the world or simply dig your toes into the sand while taking a peaceful walk on sparkling white silica sand beaches. For the more adventurous try your hand at surfing the giant sand dunes of Te Paki. Explore the edges of the huge, shallow Parengarenga Harbour - the pure quartz sand is dazzling. An organised tour along 90 Mile Beach to Cape Reinga is highly recommended.
42
The Bay of Islands are located 60 kilometres north-west of Whangarei, a sea pierced by 144 islands. Wherever you are in the Bay of Islands, it’s impossible not to immerse yourself in the blue-green world of islands and beaches. Swimming with dolphins is a specialty of both Fullers GreatSights and Explore NZ, plus sightseeing cruises to the world famous Cape Brett and the ‘Hole in the Rock’. We recommend you base yourself in Paihia or Russell, where most boat trips depart and return from or take a Day Trip from Auckland by choosing from the many options within this magazine.
Photos: Bay of Islands
Matakana Coast stretches along a stunning coastline from Puhoi to Pakiri. The region has a startling array of fresh produce, from limes, avocados, herbs and persimmons to chestnuts, olives, venison and oysters. The area’s chefs are spoilt for choice and at the Matakana Farmers Markets every Saturday from 8am until 1pm you can try Mussel Fritters or a local brew from Matakana Coffee Roasters! Your quest might be a fine bottle of wine, brunch in a cafe or an original piece of art. While you are there, take time out to browse or spend at the wonderful Matakana Village, or pop into see the spectacular view from the Cellar Door and Restaurant at Omaha Bay Vineyard in Matakana which is Open Wednesday to Sunday 11am - 5pm.

ROTORUA Rotorua was the birthplace of New Zealand tourism where in the 1800s, people flocked to Rotorua from around the world to see the amazing Pink and White Terraces – naturally formed silica terraces that cascaded into a volcanic lake. The terraces were destroyed in the 1886 Mt Tarawera eruption, but Rotorua’s fame as a fascinating travel destination grew. Today Maori guides feature at the city’s iconic attractions such as Te Puia, following in the footsteps of their ancestors. When explaining the appeal of this region, people like to talk of five spirits. You can feel the spirit of the earth, as it rumbles beneath your feet and escapes, hissing, through fumaroles and geysers. You can witness the spirit of Maori culture at Te Puia, with authentic performance experiences. Soaking in a natural hot spring can rejuvenate your spirit. Or free your spirit with outdoor adventures. Apart from its surprising crater, mountain and lake landscape, Rotorua is memorable for striking Tudorstyle architecture and beautiful public parks.
White Island, attracting scientists and volcanologists worldwide, as well as thousands of visitors. Approximately 2km in diameter, the full Maori name for the island is ‘Te Puia o Whakaari’ meaning literally: ‘The Dramatic Volcano.’

Nestled on the edge of Lake Taupo, Taupo Township is a favourite destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, offering splendid scenery, plenty to do, and superb accommodation options. The Taupo region also boasts Tongariro World Heritage National Park’s fantastic ski areas, majestic Mount Ruapehu, geothermal activity, beautiful countryside plus truly magnificent and diverse scenery. Taupo features The Huka Falls which are the largest falls on the Waikato River, they are the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand! This is where the Waikato River, normally up to 100 metres wide, abruptly narrows to just 15 metres as it crosses a hard volcanic ledge. This causes a huge volume of water to collide together, forming a spectacular visual feast of powerful falls and rapids. Around 220,000 litres per second of water pours over the cliff face, and then rushes under a pedestrian bridge (great photo opportunity here!) The water then bursts out of its rapids, over the 11 metre falls, and back into the Waikato River.
TAUPO
Huka Falls is located in Wairakei Park. This is only a short 5 minute drive north of Lake Taupo. Or you can choose the 30 minute riverside walk as a way to get to the several viewing platforms that are available. Greymouth: Shantytown is a great way to understand New Zealand’s heritage and history, take the steam train ride and pan for your own gold that you can take home with you, a favourite with the family and couples is to have an old time photo taken, where you get to dress up in costumes from a brassy bargirl or an old maid to a policeman or train robber, they have the costumes and accessories to set up a fantastic photo opportunity for you! Taken in the Golden Nugget Saloon these photos are printed while you wait and each comes in a Shantytown photo frame. If you are looking for a special piece of jade, which the West Coast is famous for, we recommend a visit to the Mahaki Pounamu studio, which is on the road to Shantytown, where Garth Wilson personally carves all the jade works in his studio and each design has its own special story. You’ll be able to see Garth carving the pounamu (jade) and his family connections with jade go back hundreds of years to the Maori tribe (Ngati Mahaki) who were the original traders of jade in New Zealand. Garth is privileged to be one of the few who have customary rights to fossick for jade. All of his jewellery and sculptures are carved from jade that he and his whanau (family) have found in West Coast/Fiordland rivers and mountains. Garth has carvings available from $60 to $6000. Hokitika: If you are visiting Hokitika, we recommend you visit the West Coast Wine Company, this is a unique shop/bar stocking an excellent range of New Zealand wine, select from their range of wines to take back to your accommodation and enjoy, or sit, relax and drink in their warm, intimate surroundings. With the best coffee in Hokitika and Rachel at the helm you are guaranteed a warm kiwi welcome, great conversation and a sample of something nice to nibble from their good things to eat menu. They can also ship your purchases direct to your door anywhere in the world, you can find them at 108 Revell Street, Hokitika.

Fox Glacier: Lake Matheson is a must do attraction for all visitors to Glacier Country. Perfect reflections of the highest peaks Mt Cook and Mt Tasman can be captured in the dark waters of this ancient lake formed by the retreat of the Fox Glacier. The walkway winds through giant rainforest with abundant bird life and many photo opportunities. The award winning restaurant, Matheson Café, is located at the entrance. They have a fantastic reputation for all their gourmet delights with a range of menus and we definitely recommend a stop here! Situated 5 minutes drive from Fox Glacier it is too close to be missed. We also recommend a trip to Fox Glacier, where Fox Glacier Guiding hosts over 50,000 visitors a year on various trip options from Heli-Hikes to Glacier Guided Walks. These trips are for both the more adventurous and passive travellers, including families and children.
Shantytown’s newest feature is a unique bush saw mill experience - telling the story of milling on the Coast in an innovative way using audio visual techniques. Other highlights include riding the steam train, gold panning, and having an old time portrait taken as a memento of your visit, this is immense fun! The Tearooms and the Golden Nugget Saloon provide refreshments so you won’t go thirsty. Shantytown is a “must-do” activity while visiting the West Coast. Just 10 minutes from Greymouth. Open EVERY day 8.30am to 5pm (except Christmas Day).
