History of Les Clefs d’Or In 12th Century France, the “compte des cierges” (“keeper of the candles”) served in the grand palaces and castles as the gatekeeper or head of the staff, who held the keys for the house. He greeted a palace’s visiting nobility as they arrived, and catered to their every whim. In the grand hotels of Europe, the idea of a “Concierge” survived through the centuries as the palaces evolved into hotels and as the “tourism” industry developed. In 1929 the legendary Parisian Concierge Ferdinand Gillet called together his counterparts across Europe to discuss ways they could co-operate to serve their guests. The Les Clefs d’Or (“keys of gold”) society was founded on the principals of integrity, friendship and professionalism, and the members adopted the golden keys to symbolise the opening of doors for their guests. Today members are recognised by the Crossed Golden Key lapel pins, worn on their jackets, while on duty at the Concierge desk. Today, this organisation has spread to 40 nations and comprises more than 3500 members worldwide. The spirit of this network is embodied in the credo, “In Service through Friendship.”

The Hotel Concierge Society Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand, is a non-profit, non-political professional association, with the country’s best hotel Concierges as members. As a national chapter of the prestigious Union Internationale des Concierges d‘Hotels Les Clefs d’Or, we have the responsibility of spreading the word in New Zealand of the ideals and ethics of our society, promoting professionalism in the hospitality and tourism industry through the concept of “service through friendship”. This means that we must set an example to the industry as a whole, displaying the highest standards of professionalism, honesty and integrity, and above all friendship in our dealings with not only our guests, but within our hotels, and with our many and varied “suppliers”, who contribute to New Zealand’s outstanding success as a tourism and business destination. Roberto is a native of Cartagena, Colombia where he worked in the Music Industry for 10 years, arriving in New Zealand when he was 29 to visit some family that were living here, “when I arrived I could not speak a word of English but thanks to generous people, I was given the opportunity to do work experience in hospitality in Auckland which empowered me to be at my best.” 10 years on, Roberto now heads a team of 11 at the Westin Hotel including Porters and Concierges. “We welcome and make guests feel at home once they arrive at the hotel, our Concierges book limousine transfers, tours outside and around Auckland, control the Valet Service and apply new procedures in order to answer questions to exceed our guests’ expectations. “NO” is not an option at the Westin. We deliver instinctive opportunities, and preserve our guests' wellness in their travels. The most memorable moment in my job... looking after David Beckham, John Travolta and Alicia Keys in the same year. They trusted my recommendations and advice creating individual moments that made them feel alive and at their best.”

David has been working for InterContinental for the last 4 years. He and his partner moved to New Zealand and fell in love with it straight away. “Seven of us travelled around the South Island in a vehicle doing the tourist routes, which was great fun and a fantastic way to see everything. Last summer we also did all of the North Island from Cape Reinga to Taupo, including the beautiful Coromandel... I think I am still a tourist at heart. In Wellington, we are lucky to live in the best capital city in the world – the size of the city, the vibrant shops, cafes, restaurants, art galleries and Museums set Wellington apart from the other cities. The people are so friendly and welcoming. As a Concierge we get to meet interesting people, not just the rich and famous but great holiday visitors and corporate guests, which often become regulars. I am proud to have meet Geoff Boycott, my hero who played for Yorkshire and England Cricket, also Michael Parkinson and Michael Palin (Monty Python) all good Yorkshire men!"

Mic cemented his position and passion for the Concierge role at the Como Boutique Hotel in Melbourne. He learnt a great deal about providing 5 star service to guests including many in show business “I was showing people to their rooms and they would ask where a good restaurant was or where they should go for a day trip. I fell in love with the work and realised it was in my character to become a Concierge. My family and I decided to have a lifestyle change and I moved with my partner and daughter to Christchurch, we had visited Christchurch many times and fell in love with the city.”

With over six years in the role as the Leisure Concierge at the Crowne Plaza in Queenstown, Nathan has enjoyed amazing experiences, from jet boating to helicopter rides and dining at some of New Zealand’s finest restaurants, through to playing golf on championship courses. Nathan says “Queenstown is such an incredibly beautiful place and I am not surprised the region I work in features in so many Hollywood blockbuster films.” Nathan ensures his guests have a fantastic time while they’re in Queenstown; “I have had the opportunity to personally experience most of the great activities Queenstown has to offer, so I can match the perfect activity to every single one of our guests.” Nathan has chosen to base himself in Queenstown, also known as ‘The Adventure Capital of the World’, because of its natural beauty, breath taking scenery and wide range of adrenalin activities. “Trust me, you will never get bored of this place, if you are not the adventurous type and are just looking for a relaxing time, there are plenty of ways to unwind.”

ear friends, welcome to our beautiful New Zealand and to the third edition of Recommend New Zealand Magazine, showcasing what makes New Zealand such a fantastic destination. Internationally, UICH Les Clefs d’Or has been organised into geographical zones to aid efficiency and assist with the growth of the organisation worldwide. In 2009, I was honoured to assume the role of Zone Director for Oceania. This comes with the responsibility of fostering closer relationships between the Concierges in Australia and New Zealand. As an organisation, we are also pooling our resources and initiatives towards 2013, when our Land of the Long White Cloud, Aotearoa, will host the 60th International UICH Les Clefs d’Or Congress in beautiful Queenstown. It will be a great opportunity to not only showcase this sophisticated holiday resort during the five day conference, but also Oceania. I am certain many will take at least two weeks for their travels, which without a doubt our countries will offer the very best to create an unforgettable and memorable experience to some of the worlds’ most powerful industry professionals.

The Fore-word on GolF WITH STEVE WILLIAMS This issue we feature the most famous Caddy in the World - Steve Williams, a born and bred New Zealander, since 1999 Steve has been the regular caddy for Tiger Woods. Steve used part of his earnings from working with Tiger Woods to start a charitable foundation to assist junior golfers in his homeland. This charitable involvement was cited in his appointment as Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Steve also indulges a long-time passion for Speedway Racing, and was the national Super Saloon car champion for 2005/2006.

Steve, what do you rate as the golf course with the most stunning scenery in New Zealand? I think Jacks Point in Queenstown has stunning scenery from the Alps to the Lakes.

What is the most unpleasant part of being an International Caddy? Travelling so frequently and all the hiccups along the way that occur when you travel can be most unpleasant. With over 400 golf courses in New Zealand, we have many unique country courses such as the Rangatira Golf Club that has an electrically powered cable car which takes you from the 18th green back up to the club house, what is the most unique feature you have ever seen on a New Zealand Golf Course? Growing up as a kid in Paraparaumu it was always unique to play at Titahi Bay with sheep and electric fences around the greens. We loved to play there it was so different.

Besides a putter, if you could only take two clubs on a round of golf with you which would they be? I would take a hybrid and a nine iron. The Steve Williams Foundation was born in 2001. A board of Trustees was set up including Steve’s wife Kirsty Williams, the Foundation’s CEO. A setting so glorious, it has to be one of New Zealand’s best eating experiences. Established in 1992, Mt Difficulty vineyards are amongst the earliest planted in Bannockburn, Central Otago. The estate has continually produced outstanding, award winning wines.

The multi-award winning Pinot Noir 2007 received Gold at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Show 2009. General Manager, Fleur Caulton describes it as distinguished, dense and rich. The tasting room is relaxed. No oenomania here. The staff convey their knowledge with enthusiasm rather than superiority. “There is quality across all our varieties,” one shared. “But the Pinot Noir is the star. Layers of flavour, ageability, complexity – it’s all there.” The Bistro is a buzzy place and the menu changes daily. The food is organic, locally sourced and partners the wines perfectly.

The chef’s food is seasonal, light, locally sourced (when available) and perfectly matched to the wines. The duck, slow roasted in pinot noir, was a small marvel: dark, crispy skin and soft, moist meat were braced with flat mushrooms, green beans and a velvety, just-sweet-enough raspberry and cassis sauce. This winery lunch menu also has a selection of delicious platters. Highlights of our platter included: antipasti, cold-smoked river salmon, wild boar terrine, fig and pinot noir chutney, Evansdale smoked brie and homemade gingerbread with blue cheese. All delicious. For the duck, Emma Lawton, Cellar Door Assistant Manager, recommended the Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir 2008, their flagship pinot. “It reflects a warmer growing season with hints of cherry, blackberry, and Christmas cake spice”. The Pinot Gris 2009 is their most popular white wine, blended from five estate vineyards. Aromas of nectarine, peach blossom and pear. Full, creamy fruit on the mid-palate with a rich, stonefruit mineral finish. It was absolutely perfect with the platter. The menu also offers gluten free options. Editor’s Note: Mt. We went for the ‘Trust the Chef’ menu, which includes a selection of dishes chosen by the chef based on the freshest ingredients available – a popular choice for many diners. A special of the day was feathery, crispy fried whitebait with lemon, rocket and a celeriac/coriander mayonnaise. The accompanying glass of chilled Saignee Rose 2009 was all wow. Another special was the dissolvingly tender lamb cutlets with smoked eggplant, buttery mash, roasted red capsicum and sweet-spice jus. The paired wine was the standout Pinot Noir 2007. All bread is handmade on site. The sourdough starter originates from the wild yeasts produced by Amisfield’s first vintage grapes of 2002 - another innovative touch.

Editors Tip: Order a glass (or bottle) of Pinot, and take time to sit in the garden and soak up the beauty of the wine and the region. Even on the coldest day, it’s a stunning setting.

Another great winter experience which is especially cosy is the Pride of Auckland Dinner Cruises, where dinner is served below deck where it is very warm and you get to go above deck whenever you like throughout the cruise, I experienced this trip in Winter and it was the perfect mix of relaxation combined with experiencing the elements of winter on the water in a great deal of comfort. All jet boat companies will give you spray coats to wear in winter but at Dart River Jet Safaris in Queenstown the spray coats are fleece lined for additional comfort in winter. MAD ABOUT MUDBRICK Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant has been a favourite for many Aucklander’s since it’s inception; a special destination where thousands of people have celebrated their weddings, birthdays, corporate and personal triumphs. The fairy lights twinkle everyday of the year at Mudbrick in a way that lights up your soul, topped with exceptional food and wine. You cannot come to Auckland and miss this dream culinary experience. When I phoned to book our table at the Mudrick for a Saturday afternoon, Brooke advised me that a 1.30pm start would not be enough time to really sit back and enjoy our experience... and she was right. Despite our 12.30pm start and 4pm finish we could have spent another 2 hours revelling in Jasons attentive service, the chef’s glorious food and the Jones’s succulent wines.

Our 5 courses started with a delightful Amuse-bouche, a gorgeous taste of seared veal set on a tile, compliments of the Chef. We decided to only order Mudbrick wines that afternoon and we were not disappointed when the first bottle arrived, the Mudbrick N.V. Marlborough bubbles, light, not too sweet and a great introduction to what was going to be a wonderful afternoon!

I was slightly familiar with the Te Matuku Bay Oyster Farm located on Waiheke Island in a Marine Reserve, so decided to give them a try as my entrée, and had there been a competition of who ordered the best entrée I would have won! They were absolutely divine, freshly shucked every day to order, soaked in gin with horseradish, it was like tasting a piece of heaven. Next came the sorbets (which were complimentary). Apple sorbet with rhubarb jelly and a feijoa foam, served in shot glasses with a spoon. The colour and taste was 5 star! Then the main event arrived. I had ordered the beef fillet which I matched with the Mudbrick Reserve Pinot Noir 2009 (grapes are sourced from the renowned Gibbston Valley grape growers in Central Otago) with highlights of raspberry, this was the perfect compliment to my beef. My friend ordered the snapper (pictured here) and I was rather jealous. She won the prize for prettiest main course. We had ordered a double serving of the truffle mash as our side dish, which was devoured at lightning speed. We all love a good truffle mash and we were fighting over this one!

It was my friend’s birthday that day and as an example of the vibe that goes on at Mudbrick when we started singing happy birthday to her, the table of 10 next door chimed in, in support. This is another great example of how wonderful Mudbrick feels.

I will never forget the day when I stood at my friends wedding in the grounds of this vineyard, a world away from Auckland, but with the Sky Tower in full view. If you are coming to Auckland, you have to visit my personal mecca, Mudbrick! Humble owners, Nick and Robyn Jones, obviously have an excellent nose for wine, wonderful taste in building design, nurture exceptional gardens where herbs and flowers are picked everyday to decorate and enhance the meals, along with a well chosen team to represent their dreams and aspirations. My immediate thought was, if you don’t book now for Rugby World Cup... you will miss out!

NORTH OF Auckland

Cape Reinga with it’s historic lighthouse marks the extreme north-western point of New Zealand. Out to sea lies the Columbia Bank maelstrom where the Tasman and the Pacific meet - sometimes producing waves more than 10 metres high. Visit the famous 90 Mile Beach, one of the most famous surfcasting beaches in the world or simply dig your toes into the sand while taking a peaceful walk on sparkling white silica sand beaches. For the more adventurous try your hand at surfing the giant sand dunes of Te Paki. Explore the edges of the huge, shallow Parengarenga Harbour - the pure quartz sand is dazzling. An organised tour along 90 Mile Beach to Cape Reinga is highly recommended.

The Bay of Islands are located 60 kilometres north-west of Whangarei, a sea pierced by 144 islands. Wherever you are in the Bay of Islands, it’s impossible not to immerse yourself in the blue-green world of islands and beaches.
