History of Les Clefs d’Or In 12th Century France, the “compte des cierges” (“keeper of the candles”) served in the grand palaces and castles as the gatekeeper or head of the staff, who held the keys for the house. He greeted a palace’s visiting nobility as they arrived, and catered to their every whim. In the grand hotels of Europe, the idea of a “Concierge” survived through the centuries as the palaces evolved into hotels and as the “tourism” industry developed. In 1929 the legendary Parisian Concierge Ferdinand Gillet called together his counterparts across Europe to discuss ways they could co-operate to serve their guests. The Les Clefs d’Or (“keys of gold”) society was founded on the principals of integrity, friendship and professionalism, and the members adopted the golden keys to symbolise the opening of doors for their guests. Today members are recognised by the Crossed Golden Key lapel pins, worn on their jackets, while on duty at the Concierge desk. Today, this organisation has spread to 40 nations and comprises more than 3500 members worldwide. The spirit of this network is embodied in the credo, “In Service through Friendship.” Our Role Associated to the Union International Hotel Concierges ‘Les Clefs d’Or’, the Hotel Concierge Society Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand is a non-profit, non-political, professional association consisting of the finest hotel Concierges throughout New Zealand.

Letter from the Editor “With this being our Spring edition of Recommend New Zealand Magazine, which coincides with New Zealand’s whitebaiting season, I thought it would be appropriate to share with you my Recipe for making a tasty whitebait fritter.”

Whitebait Fritters Ingredients

2 eggs (beaten to a consistency as fluffy as possible). 1 Tablespoon of self-raising flour 250grams NZ Whitebait (drained). Salt and freshly ground Pepper. Oil to cook in. Juice of a lemon. Having spent many years living in the lower South Island, locals would often judge your character based on how you said you prepared a whitebait fritter. Strange, I know... but if you got it right, when a local asked you, it often meant complimentary drinks and lots of friendly banter! Whitebait are a sought-after delicacy in New Zealand, selling for more than $NZ100kg. They are tiny, almost transparent fish that are caught in a net or screen. There are strict regulations applying to whitebait fishing to help conserve numbers of this native New Zealand fish. The whitebaiting season runs generally between August and November. Haere mai - Come - and enjoy a taste of New Zealand and thanks for reading Recommend New Zealand Magazine!

Method Drain your whitebait in a colander, place into a bowl. Add the already beaten egg. Gently mix.

Instructions Heat oil in a pan and place a large spoonful of the fritter mixture in the pan. Spread it into a round shape with the back of the spoon. Allow it to cook, ie. let the egg set, until golden on one side. You do not need to wait for the fish to go white! Then turn it over and cook the other side. Serve the fritters with freshly ground salt and pepper, and a squeeze of your lemon.

Newest Les Clefs d’Or Member Roberta Bezerra, Chief Concierge, The Langham, Auckland Roberta Bezerra has been a member of Les Clefs d’Or Concierge Society since 2002, based in Brazil. Roberta was past-President of the Brazilian Les Clefs d’Or Chapter from 2005 to 2009. Having previously worked before at the InterContinental Rio de Janeiro and also at the Copacabana Palace (an Orient Express Hotel) also in Rio de Janeiro, Roberta’s wealth of experience is an asset to her new position at The Langham, Auckland Hotel. Roberta has a major in Tourism Management and also speaks German, Portuguese, Spanish and French. Roberta arrived in New Zealand in February 2010, and was recently awarded her New Zealand Les Clefs d’Or Keys at a ceremony at The Langham, Auckland.

Profile Daniel Marsh, Chief Concierge, Stamford Plaza Hotel Auckland and Les Clefs d’Or Member Daniel has been with The Stamford Plaza Hotel Auckland for the last two and a half years and has been a Les Clef’s d’Or member for the last year and a half. He has 14 years experience in several different properties around Auckland and was a Les Clefs d’Or Member previously for 5 years. Daniel is very passionate about the Concierge role and takes great pride in showcasing the best of what New Zealand has to offer, he says, “It is a pleasure and a privilege to be associated with a friendly society like Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand”. Daniel is also a qualified chef and loves trying new things and letting guests and colleagues share in his experiences. Daniel loves the challenges that the Concierge role can bring and some of the more ‘interesting’ things that people can ask for, “I think the most memorable part of my work is looking after dignitaries and musicians who can come up with some great things that they may need. I haven’t had to say ‘no’ yet. Anything and everything is available. Sometimes it just takes a couple more phone calls and an extension on your credit card!”

Familiarisation Fiona Lawson, Concierge, Crowne Plaza Hotel Christchurch experiences “Little River Rail Trail” “Natural high caters for the recreational cyclist. Andrew, the owner, fitted us with cycles and helmets, loaded the bikes to the back of his 4WD and we headed of towards Birdling’s Flat to the Little River Rail Trail. Arriving at Birdlings flat, Andrew provided water bottles and snack bars, and onto our Bikes we hoped. The cycle track uses the formation of the Little River Branch railway, which ran from Southbridge (where Daniel Carter, the All Black Rugby Player is from) to Little River. The railway closed in 1962 and the formation had remained largely undisturbed until the early 2000s. The trail is gentle and flat, and the section we covered traverses along the historic railway embankment into the Little River township. Much of the trail travels along the shores of Te Roto o Wairewa (Lake Forsyth), which teems with birdlife and historic Maori settlements. The views are stunning, the smells of the country side were stimulating, and I was indeed getting a Natural High. 7km later we arrived at Little River and with a good appetite we headed into the Little River cafe. There was time to also look at locally-made arts and crafts. Rested and with a full tummy we headed back along the rail track. All too soon we pulled up to the 4wd and Andrew loaded the bikes up for us. We still had some time to visit the Birdling’s Flat Settlement, which is very much how New Zealand “baches” used to be – simple but comfortable in a stunning natural environment. Definitely worth a visit. We then headed reluctantly back into town.”

Taika Waititi

Actor, Director, Writer and Comedian

Taika Waititi hails from the Raukokore region on the East Coast of New Zealand. He has been involved in the arts for several years, as a visual artist, actor, writer and director. Taika’s first short film, ‘Two Cars, One Night’, was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005. His next short, ‘Tama Tu’ about a group of Maori soldiers in Italy during World War II won a string of international awards, making it also eligible for Oscar nomination. His first feature movie, Eagle vs. Shark, was released internationally in 2007 after selling to Miramax on the basis of a trailer. Taika has a strong background in comedy writing and performing and with fellow comedian Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), has won New Zealand’s top comedy award, the “Billy T” and also the “Spirit of the Fringe Award” in Edinburgh. Taika’s latest feature film has become New Zealand’s highest grossing film “BOY” beating “Once were Warriors”, catapulting Taika to International fame. You have just been overseas, what were you up to? I’ve been acting in a big Hollywood movie called The Green Lantern. It is Warner Brothers’ latest comic book adaptation and stars Ryan Reynolds. I play his mate. I basically spent most of my time enjoying

New Orleans and not acting. It was a great experience. You are a writer, comedian, actor and director. Do you prefer being in front of the camera or behind the camera? I prefer being behind the camera now. I like the control and general atmosphere of being creatively responsible for a film. I like being in charge and feel like a sort of Prime Minister of a very very small country. I’m a control freak. Are you writing anything at the moment, if so what is the theme of your next script? I’m writing many projects right now, some are going better and faster than others but they all pretty much share the same themes; love, family, acceptance. A lot of my characters are trying to find their way and place in the world, struggling to fit in and are almost always awkward and clumsy. What’s your favourite place in New Zealand for a holiday? East Coast of the North Island is familiar ground but generally anywhere with a nice beach is a suitable destination for me. If I’m among friends then I’m very happy. Was the Movie “Two Cars One Night” a reflection on your childhood... did you have to sit outside the pub waiting for your parents? It was more a reflection of most people’s childhoods. It doesn’t matter what your background or life experience is, or whether you’re been left in a car, everyone has been left alone at some point as a child. The film is more about what happens in that time and certainly isn’t a judgement on NZ parenting techniques. It’s a love story set against a dark background.

If you had one week in life where you could do anything in the world what would it be? I’d quite like to experience weightlessness so maybe I’d like to go to space and do a few orbits of Earth. Or I’d like to go really deep down in the ocean. Do you Twitter and pay attention to all of that? I Tweet now and then. Sometimes I have bursts of inspiration though I’d say it stems more from boredom than having great things to share with people. I don’t pay much attention to the medium, it’s a good tool for communicating brief ideas, or advertising events, but I really don’t think about it at all. If you had to recommend to an International Visitor to do one thing while they were in New Zealand, what would it be? Get out of the city. Go bush. Go to the country and enjoy what we have to offer out in the wilderness. You won’t find anything like it elsewhere; the landscape is what defines this country. Cities are pretty much the same the world over but if I had to recommend a city I’d say Wellington is the best.

What do you do during your downtime / hobbies? I eat food and drive fast in my car. Then I eat more food. Usually I watch movies or read books. Basically I don’t do anything and that’s really important to me. If I were to get you a Christmas present what would you like it to be? A camera or a sewing machine or an antique lamp or a nice blender. Or a Citroen SE. What is your favourite drink? A Pimm’s Cup. I have heard that someone calls you their 5th child, is that how you like to see life as though it is through a child’s eyes? We all see the world through some kind of filter, I couldn’t say mine is like a child’s but with my work I usually take an innocent and whimsical approach. I’d like to think I’ve developed a style which appears childlike but works on a more adult level. There was a gang you invented in your latest movie “BOY” called the “Crazy Horses”, how did you come up with that name? A few members of my family are into Native American culture and as a child I remember many stories about these famous Indian chiefs. One, of course, is Crazy Horse, and I just liked the sound of that in association with a made up gang. Gang names, in general, are quite ridiculous; the fact that a group of guys get together and come up with names that they think are cool is hilarious to me. This name reflects that. What music do you like? I can appreciate most styles, I go through phases where I can only listen to a particular artist or genre

but these days I have found it hard to keep up with all the trendy bands that are on “the scene”. As a result I usually revert to classics, things I know that work for me. Basically if I have a little of everything at my disposal then I’m happy. What is the most unusual thing someone has come up and said to you since you have become a New Zealand legend? I haven’t heard anything unusual yet. I used to get mistaken for Cliff (Curtis) when I was younger and I would sometimes pretend to be him, and sometimes if I was hanging with Jemaine (from Flight of the Conchords) then people would think I was Bret. That doesn’t happen too much anymore, I miss the old days. What other jobs have you done that weren’t in show business? I used to be in the hospitality industry for about 3 years, working in Wellington cafes and restaurants. But I got too bitter about serving people so had to leave. I’ve done other things like diving for seaweed, picking squash, handing out flyers for clubs, life modelling, and working in a fruit/video shop. But my main job has been to remain in the arts and try to be creative. It doesn’t pay well but I’m my own boss and I like the hours. What is your favourite photograph? Anything that makes me look at it for more than 30 seconds. Do the movie premieres excite you to the point that you end up partying all night? I don’t get excited at all I’m afraid. I like the idea of free food and a nice glass of bubbly but as for the red carpet spectacle, if I can, I try to avoid it or find a side door. Not that people really want to take my photograph or anything, I just don’t like being in the field of vision of lots of people when all you’re doing is walking on carpet. It seems very silly and antiquated. But yes, I do stay up very late. Have you ever done a bungy jump? Yes, in Queenstown. It wasn’t a rush. It was just uncomfortable and weird and I was happy to be out of that big elastic band. I think it’s a fun thing to do once but I can’t help thinking how awkward you look bouncing around. How old are you, and how old do you feel? I’m between 20 and 80 years old. I feel the same as I did when I was very young but maybe a little wiser and emotionally weathered. I guess I have never really felt “old”, which is a good thing. You shouldn’t do immature things as an adult, but you should embrace the child in you and feel free to play. You’re a Citroen fan, what is it that you love about them so much, and do you have a name for your car? I haven’t named my car, I can’t think of anything appropriate. I was turned on to these cars a couple of years ago by a friend who took me on a road trip in a Citroen BX. I’ve never really been into cars but I guess there was something about the quirkiness, the sort of futuristic ideas they had in the 80’s that appealed to me. They are weird cars and the Citroen BX’s especially are sometimes kind of ugly, but there’s a charm to them and I love how fast they go. They can go very, very fast. Whitewater and Wine Rafting the Landsborough River When people think of whitewater rafting in the Southern Alps a few things come to mind: ice cold water, thrills and spills and some stinky borrowed wetsuit. The word luxury rarely enters the equation, let alone the whiff of decadence. The team at Queenstown Rafting is aiming to change your mind on just what a high-end rafting trip is all about. The three day trip down the Landsborough River started early in Queenstown. Our first port of call was to the head shed to collect our equipment and meet the team. After a quick introduction we grabbed our refreshingly not-so-smelly wetsuits and the remainder of our gear and loaded up the van for the drive to the West Coast. Over the Crown Range and the Gates of Haast westward we go. At a non-descript pull-out the van pulls over. As our driver and

raft guide, Michel an affable French-Canadian, starts to explain what is going to happen a distant thumping is heard. As if right on cue the chopper buzzes the roof and lands in the paddock beside the road. Like I said, this is luxury rafting. Loading our gear into the machine we climb aboard as the pilot revs the engine and the magic carpet lifts off the ground. Soaring effortlessly we glide above the forest heading up-river. The carpet of green is only broken by the blue ribbon of water that bisects the landscape. On the horizon the hulking statuesque silhouette of the Southern Alps stand guard like a fortress wall. We touch down in a tiny clearing beside the river. Over the low frequency din of the rotor blades we unload the helicopter and in an instant we are left alone in the silence. I grab my gear and walk a few steps into a fully set up camp. An elaborate cooking area complete with table, chairs and fire pit. Just beyond is a tiny village of tents dotted amongst the trees. I find my tent - this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t some backyard pup-tent - tall enough to stand in and complete with camp cots, this is posh digs for the backcountry. Returning to the kitchen area I find that our guides have laid out a cheese platter and are pouring me a nice glass of Central Otago Pinot Noir. I wonder to myself if this new standard of luxury wilderness adventure will spoil me forever. Will I ever be able to go back to scroggin and Milo? Before dinner I take a stroll amongst the forest. The sound of

birdsong echoes all around as the sun begins to head towards the horizon. Upon my return dinner is on the go - and what a meal it is. A stir-fry befitting an up-market bistro is finished off with a chocolate pudding that you wish your mamma used to make. The next morning I wake up early and promptly stay in bed for an hour - it’s one of those sort of trips. Eventually the smell of breakfast urges me out of my palatial tent. After breakfast it’s time to actually do some rafting on this rafting trip. We load up and hit the river. It’s a stunning day, warm and sunny - so not the West Coast. The river twists and turns through the landscape, bumpy second class rapids are broken up with larger sections of whitewater. As we head down river the intensity of the rapids builds. We pull off to the side of the river to scout a rapid called ‘Squeeze’. At a house sized rock the river takes a sharp right then a left. We would have to be precise, committed and ready to negotiate it. We paddle for all we’re worth and ride the liquid locomotive. The rollercoaster of whitewater throws the raft at its whim. In a flash it’s over and we’re out the other side, laughing, elated, high-fiving and ready to take on the world. The rest of the day is predicated with fun rapids, lazy floats and stunning views. We pull out late in the afternoon to another prepared camp. Before long the Pinot emerges and the smell of a roast lamb fills the air. As I drift off to sleep I wonder what the next day of rafting is going to entail. I wonder what’s for breakfast and

At Waiheke, you know you’re on islandtime as soon as you disembark from the ferry. Waiheke Executive Transport picked us up on our day trip for a 3 hour wine trail around the island. Owner James ‘Jimbo’ Bailey works to accommodate all requests according to personal tastes and interests – from gastronomy to golf to a tour of local artists working from their homes or studios. While New Zealand produces 1% of the world’s wine, Waiheke produces 1% of New Zealand’s wine and is renowned for its boutique wineries. Four vineyard tastings later, we gratefully accepted our window table at the celebrated Te Whau Vineyard Restaurant. The recipient of countless awards, Te Whau boasts an impressive list of accolades and an even more impressive view. Perched on the southern side of the Island, you’re afforded wide unobstructed views back to the cityscape of Auckland. It was magical enough at one in the afternoon - I can only imagine how it must sparkle at night. With a glass of Te Whau’s 2009 Chardonnay in hand, the crayfish bisque and paddle crab salad entrees seemed an obvious choice as we gazed across the azure Hauraki Gulf. Neither dish disappointed. Generous portions of exquisitely prepared venison and market fish John Dory followed, accompanied by The Point 2006 vintage. Hmmmm - rich, ripe, velvety and unforgettable. Almost as unforgettable as the perfect day trip from Auckland – only a half-hour journey yet a whole other world away.

When I phoned to book our table at the Mudrick for a Saturday afternoon, I was advised that a 1.30pm start would not be enough time to really sit back and enjoy our experience... and she was right. Our 5 courses started with a delightful Amuse-bouche, a gorgeous taste of seared veal, compliments of the Chef. For my entrée I tried the Te Matuku Bay Oysters, freshly shucked each day to order, soaked in gin with horseradish, they were divine. The main event arrived, beef fillet matched with the Mudbrick Reserve Pinot Noir 2009 (grapes are sourced from the renowned Gibbston Valley in Central Otago) with highlights of raspberry, this was the perfect compliment. Humble owners, Nick and Robyn Jones have an excellent nose for wine, wonderful taste in building design, and exceptional gardens where herbs and flowers are picked everyday to decorate and enhance the meals. Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant has been a favourite for many Aucklanders since its inception; a special destination where thousands of people have celebrated their weddings, birthdays, corporate and personal triumphs. The fairy lights twinkle everyday of the year at Mudbrick in a way that lights up your soul, topped with exceptional food and wine. There are many picturesque places in Central Otago. For wine lovers, the short trip from central Queenstown to the outstanding wine region of Bannockburn is a must. The drive through the Kawarau Gorge is one of New Zealand’s most scenic. Make sure you stop alongside the Roaring Meg for magnificent landscape views. The Mt Difficulty Cellar Door and Restaurant is nestled in the Bannockburn hills. The building – concrete and cedar – is deliberately simple as nothing can upstage the earthy views of the patchwork vineyard plains. The chef’s food is seasonal, light, locally sourced (when available) and perfectly matched to the wines. The duck, slow roasted in pinot noir, was a small marvel: dark, crispy skin and soft, moist meat were braced with flat mushrooms, green beans and a velvety, just-sweet-enough raspberry and cassis sauce. This winery lunch menu also has a selection of delicious platters. Highlights of our platter included: antipasti, cold-smoked river salmon, wild boar terrine, fig and pinot noir chutney, Evansdale smoked brie and homemade gingerbread with blue cheese. All delicious. For the duck, Emma Lawton, Cellar Door Assistant Manager, recommended the Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir 2008, their flagship pinot. “It reflects a warmer growing season with hints of cherry, blackberry, and Christmas cake spice”. The Pinot Gris 2009 is their most popular white wine, blended from five estate vineyards. Aromas of nectarine, peach blossom and pear. The menu also offers gluten free options.

The Amisfield Wine Company Bistro and Cellar door, located at Lake Hayes, a 10 minute drive from central Queenstown, is a wine and food destination not to be missed. Indulge. The multi-award winning Pinot Noir 2007 recently received Gold at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Show 2009. General Manager, Fleur Caulton describes it as distinguished, dense and rich. The tasting room is relaxed. No oenomania here. The staff convey their knowledge with enthusiasm rather than superiority. “There is quality across all our varieties,” one shared. “But the Pinot Noir is the star. Layers of flavour, ageability, complexity – it’s all there.” The Bistro is a buzzy place and the menu changes daily. The food is organic, locally sourced and partners the wines perfectly. We went for the ‘Trust the Chef’ menu, which includes a selection of dishes chosen by the chef based on the freshest ingredients available – a popular choice for many diners. A special of the day was feathery, crispy fried whitebait with lemon, rocket and a celeriac/coriander mayonnaise. The accompanying glass of chilled Saignee Rose 2009 was all wow. Another special was the dissolvingly tender lamb cutlets with smoked eggplant, buttery mash, roasted red capsicum and sweet-spice jus. The paired wine was the standout Pinot Noir 2007. All bread is handmade on site. The sourdough starter originates from the wild yeasts produced by Amisfield’s first vintage grapes of 2002 - another innovative touch.

Blue Pearls Uniquely New Zealand Early pearl culture was attempted in many countries with many different species of shellfish, without success. In 1890 however, Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in cultivating round pearls in oysters and the cultured pearl industry was born. At the same time, French scientist Louis Boutan produced the first mabé (hemispherical) pearls in abalone, but because of difficulties in raising this particular species of shellfish, he abandoned his efforts and it was not continued as a commercial venture. Ninety years later, in the crystal clean waters of the South Pacific, the discovery of a beautiful natural pearl in the New Zealand species of abalone, sparked one man’s desire to continue Louis Boutan’s earlier work. This is a story of dedication and commitment through years of research and development to create a gem that is truly one of a kind. New Zealander Roger Beattie in 1989, established the first ocean based blue pearl farm at Whangamoe Inlet on New Zealand’s Chatham Islands. Rogers understanding of the pearl fishery and an empathy not only for the environment but also the very rhythms of nature’s life cycles, led Roger and his team to embark on a project which would see the creation of a new gem, 24

unparalleled in its beauty and colour. Using his extensive knowledge accumulated over twenty years diving for paua, Roger Beattie and his team at the Eyris Blue Pearl Company went about pioneering ways to farm paua, allowing paua to develop as naturally as possible in their ocean environment, with the ebb and flow of the tides, feeding only on their natural diet of nutrient rich seaweed. Paua are voracious eaters – they eat up to 50% of their body weight per week. Without continued access to high quality natural seaweed, a blue pearl farming operation would not be possible. Peter Williams TV Presenter and Golfer Peter Williams is an exceptional New Zealand television presenter. In 2010 readers of TV Guide voted him New Zealand’s best news presenter. Peter is a passionate golfer and is also on the Board of Directors of the charity The First Tee and here he gives us his perspective on golf! What do you rate as the golf course with the most stunning scenery in New Zealand? There are numerous courses around the country with either ocean or mountain views but Jack’s Point, near Queenstown has a spectacular combination of both. Nestled under the jagged Remarkables, and on the shores of the pristine Lake Wakatipu, there are few golf courses anywhere with a setting like this. But don’t play there when the southerly is whistling up the lake! What is the most unique feature you have ever seen on a New Zealand Golf Course? There’s a par 3 at the Rotorua Golf Club which you play over a bubbling mud pool. The course, known as Arikikapakapa, is built right in the heart of the thermal area and on the way round you often see little spurts of steam coming out of the ground. But because the volcanic soil is fertile and free draining, the playing surfaces at the course are always top class and it’s always ready to play on again quickly, even after the heaviest downpour. What do you rate as the hidden Gem of New Zealand Golf Courses? With the country having nearly 400 courses for

a population of 4 million, there are numerous country gems from the far north to the south of the South Island. But here’s a couple I always liked - Ekatahuna in the northern Wairarapa, because of its lush surfaces and greens (and the fact that a truly great New Zealander Sir Brian Lochore is on the honours board as the intermediate champion in 2008!) and Taieri, just out of Dunedin, because it’s the place where I shot my lowest ever competitive round. It was a 67, and I was tied for the first round lead with New Zealand representative James Gill. He won the tournament and I have never reached such great heights since. What club do you belong to? Royal Auckland and Mount Maunganui. Have you ever played Kauri Cliffs or Cape Kidnappers, and if so what was the experience like? Yes, I’ve been lucky to play both more than once. They are incredibly demanding golf courses but they are places that everybody should try. My advice play off the tees that best suit your ability. If you try to be too macho, especially on a windy day, you won’t enjoy it because you’ll lose lots of golf balls and get very frustrated. But both courses require you to make very good golf shots to get rewarded with a good score, and that’s the way it should be. The scenery is breathtaking. If you have the time and the means, make a weekend of it and pamper yourself with a stay at the adjoining lodge. You won’t forget the experience! Investing in New Zealand Residential Property New Zealand’s favourable tax regime has led to property investment becoming the preferred method for many people attempting to build wealth in New Zealand. One major incentive for property investors is that New Zealand has no stamp duty or capital gains tax. When Malcolm Law was just 9 years old he lost his brother to leukaemia. Ever since then Malcolm wanted to help others who are fighting this illness - Every day 6 children and adults in New Zealand are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood conditions. So, last year, after 12 months training and preparation, Malcolm became the first person ever to run New Zealand’s 7 Great Walks in just 7 days. In so doing he raised over $85,000 for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation. This year Malcolm’s back for more! He is planning a second ultra-endurance run that will see him covering another 360 km’s of gruelling trails over just 7 days. It’s called the 7in7 Challenge and you can learn more or make a donation to support Malcolm at www.7in7.org.nz. Over two years Malcolm will have run some 7,000 km, worn out 16 pairs of running shoes, and donated thousands of hours of his time to this venture. What scene had the most impact on you during your seven days? The finish line of the Kepler Challenge at the end of the 7in7 and the culmination of a year’s dreaming. Pretty much everyone that mattered to me was there to share the moment. My 12 year old son ran the last kilometre with me. It was a totally happy occasion, everyone 32

cried and rejoiced in my achievement, I couldn’t have been happier. Were there any logistical issues with trying to get between these famous walks in the North Island and South Islands in 7 days? Yes, particularly when the weather crapped out and we had to drive from Tongariro to Wellington, get a late night ferry and then drive the 3 hours to the Abel Tasman Coast Track. The cameraman was snoring and I only got 2 hours sleep then had to run 53 km which took me 8.5 hours. At that point I was really nervous about the next run and was just relieved that I had made it this far. That next run (The Heaphy Track, 78km) I had to start at 3.30am. I would like to apologise to the people staying in the Brown Hut at the start of The Heaphy who I rudely awoke at 3am to set off. What is the driving force that made you do this when you are a passionate Pinot drinker, love to have a good time, yet you set your mind on this and made it happen – how is that humanly possible? Shear bloody mindedness. Once I put my mind to something, I don’t give up easily. But at the end of the day I was doing what I love which is running in beautiful wild, places in the company of good friends. The doing of it was kind of superfluous, because I was having a good time. The hardest thing was training for the event by myself. I heard you went to Mongolia in 2009 to do a marathon (42 km) and loved it so much you ran over the finish line and kept on going to complete 100km. I went to Mongolia to do a marathon in a place called Lake Hovsgol, in the remote North of Mongolia. When we got there everyone we met there was doing a full 100km, so the testosterone got the better of me, I couldn’t imagine at the end of the Marathon sitting down with these guys who were achieving so much more... I would be a bit red faced! If you had to recommend to an International Visitor to do one thing while they were in New Zealand, what would it be? To stay a night in a back country kiwi mountain hut, they are a unique experience.
