MY NEW ZEALAND
With Former All Black the famous Marc Ellis
Marc Christopher Gwynne Ellis (born October 8, 1971) is a New Zealand businessman and television presenter, a former rugby league and rugby union player. A graduate of the University of Otago, his primary business interests are in Charlie's, a juice company. During the 1995 Rugby World Cup he scored six tries in the game against Japan, which is the record for the most tries by an individual in a Rugby World Cup match. What is your favourite place in New Zealand for a Holiday? Opito Bay – sea, sun, fresh seafood and a few sherberts. If you had one week in life where you could do anything in the world what would it be? Land on the moon, Score 100 V Australia in a cricket test, win the Rugby World Cup, Indie 500, US Masters and then unwind at Hef’s Halloween Party with a weekend in Vegas on the way back to NZ. Failing that spend the week with my entire family and at the beach as per above! If you had to recommend to an International Visitor to do one thing while they were in New Zealand, what would it be? Get off the beaten track with no firm plans and let it unfold. What do you do during your downtime / hobbies? Spend time with my little girl and lad - I know the Auckland Zoo very well and every nursery rhyme. I like to dive and play cricket. If I were to get you a Christmas present what would you like it to be? Fine weather over the summer holiday. What is your favourite drink? That’s simple Charlie’s Juice when I am being good and Speight’s when I am not.

What is the most unusual thing someone has come up and said to you since you have become a New Zealand Legend? I once had an Island chap, post a Warriors rugby league match, offer the advice “you know Harris, (he couldn’t pronounce Ellis) you eat the rabbit you run fast”. How do you respond to that? What other jobs have you done before? The usual menial student tasks from gardening to retail and factory work. But primarily Marketing work starting with KPMG then Charlie’s and running a media and marketing company of my own. Have you ever done a bungy jump? Plenty. What is the New Zealand Food that you miss the most when you are away from New Zealand? My wife does an unbeatable fish pie and a brilliant Chicken Milanese usually with a salad of sorts, that and her casseroles. Mmmmmmmm! I am starting to salivate. What is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in the World? “Jones The Grocer” in Newmarket Auckland. The best coffee and brunches full stop.

Three of New Zealand’s most popular ski areas are found in the South Island of New Zealand, and offer everything a skier or snowboarder could want for an amazing and memorable winter holiday.
Mt Hutt Just an hour-and-a-half from Christchurch and a half-hour drive from the resort town of Methven, Mt Hutt is all about ‘playtime’ in the high country. On a clear day at Mt Hutt you can see the Pacific Ocean in one direction and into the heart of the Alps the other. The trail network suits all snow lovers, from total beginner through to keen-as intermediates and the world’s best racers and riders. It comes with high speed chairlifts, progressive terrain parks, chutes and steeps, a halfpipe and a warm, comfortable base building. Little kids love the Skiwiland Early Learning Centre and as they get older there’s progressive and fun Kea Club programmes for young skiers and boarders. ‘Dinner with the Stars’ gives visitors a chance to experience night-time activities at the ski area accompanied by an amazing dinner and even husky rides! 16

Coronet Peak Further south in Queenstown, Coronet Peak is adored by locals, with its easily accessible rollercoaster terrain embracing every level of skier and rider. Days start early with First Tracks from 8am and weekends finish late with Night Skiing under lights on Fridays and Saturdays. Over at Rocky Gully a dedicated race training area hosts world-class athletes and you can pick up fabulous Euro-style pizzas and pasta at Heidi’s Hut while you watch the action with a wine, beer or coffee in hand.
Remarkables Across the valley at The Remarkables, it’s all about FUN! Relaxed, friendly and high in The Remarkables mountain range, The Remarks is fabulous for kids and families and the natural Queenstown ‘home’ for big mountain fans and park rats. Its high altitude and north-facing slopes make it a fantastic sun trap. There’s a large, wide, gentle beginner area, a snow tubing park that’s perfect for non-skiers or the best family fun, a progressive series of

Modern coaches to The Remarkables and Coronet Peak leave regularly from central Queenstown.

New Zealand Glaciers
Fox Glacier a Guided Heli Extravaganza Naomi Lindsay’s Fabulous 5 Star Weekend
It’s been almost six years since my last trip to the West Coast of the South Island and after an amazing weekend spent at the glaciers, it’s hard to remember why it’s been so long between visits. The drive to Fox Glacier from Queenstown is one of the best I have experienced, following Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea for the first couple of hours, before descending into an alpine wonderland of lush trees and waterfalls. From Haast to Fox Glacier, you drive through the rugged coastline including the awesome Bruce Bay, with the driftwood drenched beach and large, crashing waves, a constant reminder of the uniqueness of the West Coast. We arrived at the small town of Fox Glacier on a blue sky day and were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, piercing the clouds with their snowy peaks. Situated at just 250m above sea level, the west coast glaciers are some of the most accessible in the world and you can explore them with a guided group. Locally owned, Fox Glacier Guiding offer half and full day tours, as well as a half day heli-hike which we opted for. After checking in, we were fully kitted out with all the relevant gear including sturdy boots, waterproof clothing and crampons (ice-shoes) for walking on the glacier. Following a short bus journey to the heli-pad, which has stunning views of Mount Cook and the Tasman Ocean, we boarded the
20

helicopter for the 7 minute ride to the glacier landing point at Victoria Flat. The flight was awe-inspiring and I just didn’t know where to start looking first. Surrounded by the snow-capped Southern Alps we flew effortlessly up and over the lower ice fall of the glacier, cruised over the bluest of blue lakes, the upper ice fall and the Victoria Falls before landing on a remote part of the Fox Glacier. We were fitted with our gear, specially designed for these icy conditions, before our guides Tyler and Stu lead us expertly across the spectacular terrain. With a mixture of trepidation and sheer excitement I soon found my ice stride and off we went. Our group was lucky enough to see an ice cave which we could walk through, as well as a Moulin (a narrow, tubular chute, hole or crevasse through which water enters a glacier from the surface) and a new crystal clear lake which had appeared only that day. The fly in, fly out heli hike ideally combined the excitement of walking on the Fox Glacier with the thrill of a helicopter flight and it truly felt like we had been transported to a different world entirely in a matter of minutes. I felt very privileged to be walking on a glacier which is changing constantly and we are told every trip is different as the ice changes so much. After just under two and half hours of exploring and taking fantastic photos, we heard the sound of the helicopter in the distance as our ride home came into view to take us back to base. After a quick detour to Lake Matheson to see the mirror perfect reflection
of Mount Cook reflected in her waters, we drove the few kilometres down the road to our home for the night at Te Waonui Forest Retreat at Franz Josef. It’s not every day that you see natural rainforest and native trees from your bedroom window, which is why Te Waonui at Franz Joseph is so amazing. It was a true delight waking to the pitter patter of raindrops as they fell through the forest and the sounds of native birds starting their day. The lodge’s famous 5 course degustation dinner with wine match was possibly the nicest dining experience I have ever had. This wilderness lodge has all the creature comforts anyone could desire and some extra subtle touches that make your stay even more special. Our friends even got engaged here recently with a proposal in the restaurant; he had treated her to a 5 Star weekend away from Auckland – she said yes, it must have been all that fabulous food and wine – pure luxury! If time permits, another must is the nearby Glacier Hot Pools, which are accessed via the undercover walkways from the lodge. The hidden location felt like we were in the Amazon Rainforest, far away from it all and helped
the muscles relax after our hike. Fox Glacier is New Zealand at its best, with some of the best landscape New Zealand has to offer, totally unspoilt it is a World Heritage area. A must-do for those who have never been and for those that have, we recommend you get re-acquainted, it has to be on everyone’s bucket list!

SEASONAL SECRETS
Off the Beaten Track Looking Forward to the Secrets that Spring in New Zealand has to Offer
Life starts afresh in Spring. After a hard winter, those that stayed start to emerge, unravel, or flutter towards the softening light. Those that fled for warmer climes regret their disloyalty and return, renewing once more their vow of chastity, at least for now. A trip around New Zealand in Spring offers nature’s casual observer an eclectic feast of beauty. Bird lovers rejoice, birds beware – it’s time for the Coming of the Cuckoos. From their Pacific hideaways they return, the call of the Shining and Long Tailed Cuckoos echoing down from Northland as they head south seeking unwilling adopters. Listen to the call – some say if the notes drop at the end, it’s going to rain. Dubious. Perhaps if the notes rise, they’ve spent too much time in Australia. For wider wingspans, the coasts light up with returning wanderers. Regal Royal Albatross grace Otago’s Taiaroa Head, the world’s only mainland breeding colony for an aviator which can fly 190,000km a year. If you can’t reach Otago, take a ride on the Cook Strait ferry and watch behind the stern, you may well catch a glimpse.

mainland forests and even some of the towns, mating season is getting underway, with Tui territorial behaviour a joy for both eyes and ears. Sea life comes close to shore in Spring too. Seals get playful at Red Rocks, Cape Turakirae and Cape Palliser, among others, and sealions, returning only recently after being near-decimated by whalers in the 19th century, gather on Otago’s coast. Whales are particularly watchful at Kaikoura – though a walk down Oriental Parade in Wellington may get you a close encounter with an Orca. For those who like a target, deer will be showing themselves after holing up for the winter, giving hunters something to aim at after the winter months. Anglers will find bounteous opportunities as trout run in rivers looking for a place to spawn. Taupo is one of many regions fit for fishing purpose, with remote areas for the solitary or a more social environment near Turangi. Whatever your inclination – casual observer to willing volunteer (amazing opportunities available for nothing but your time) – spring in New Zealand delivers on a pure promise. It’s up to us as individuals to receive it.
Visitors to Okarito may spot the stunning White Heron, or say hello to Farewell Spit or the Birds a Plenty festival in the Bay of Plenty to spot an exhausted Eastern Bar-Tailed Godwit, returning from, some may say, a misconceived sojourn in Siberia or Alaska.
Spring out of the Cities
Dunedin is the place for much wildlife, and if you want to see penguins, the Yellow-Eyed and Little Blue varieties are in regulars here. Back in the

flourishing. Fantails, Warblers, Silvereyes and Moreporks inhabit the forest, and the shores will be welcoming returning migrants. Visiting at the tail end of spring will be rewarded with the first glimpses of Rangitoto’s piece de resistance, the pohutukawa. Wellington Islands are often the best places to immerse yourself in New Zealand’s nature, as many have been freed from predators allowing the natives to return. Wellington can boast Matiu/Somes, declared pest-free in the late 1980s. The brightly coloured Kakariki, North Island Robin welcome visitors, as to Fantail, Kingfisher and Oystercatchers. Also watch out for some unique NZ reptiles including skinks, gecko and Tuatara. West Coast West coast visitors often head out to glacier country for a look at Fox or Franz Josef. But spring is a good time to ditch the car and try out one of the recently opened cycleways. The first purpose built, shared walk/ cycleways to be built in a national park, both lead from nearby townships up to the glacier car parks. Both are around 8km return, with the path to Fox steering through ancient rainforest, while pedalling to Franz Josef will take you through an amazing rata forest – fantastic at this time of year. Christchurch Don’t forget Christchurch – Canterbury is stunning, and nature offers many opportunities to escape and de-stress. Head to the summit of Arthur’s Pass for the Dobson Nature Walk, where a profusion of alpine and sub-alpine flowers start to bloom from November, including the Mount Cook Lily and giant daisies. The views aren’t so shabby either. Queenstown If you find yourself in Queenstown, take a trip to Ben Lomond. A gondola will take you up the first stage, but then the fit can head upwards to 1700 metres where there may be some snow hanging around. The views are always good from here, but the spring air is crisp and clean, and there’s less summer haze for that perfect photograph.

Off the Beaten Track If you can get away from the cities for a while, there are plenty of secrets to discover. Head west from Gisborne to the Lake Waikaremoana area. Tiny native orchids, luscious red kakabeak – seriously threatened in the wild – rata and mistletoe will accompany you as you head for lakeside. Take a water taxi to Te-Korokoro-o-Whaitiri Bay and walk 30 minutes through primordial podocarp forest to the hidden gem that is the Korokoro waterfall. The popular Pouakai Circuit is high in the Egmont National Park, on the west coast of the North Island. It’s a 25 kilometres mountain track through tangled, lichen covered goblin forest, lava cliffs and gullies, alpine country and the broad tussock-topped Pouakai Range with stunning views of Mt Taranaki and the surrounding countryside. On the South Island, hop on a bus from Nelson to embark on the Wangapeka and neighbouring tracks. Dominated by three crystal clear back country rivers flowing through the spectacular forests of Kahurangi National Park, this trip offers a real spring clean for the mind and body. You’ll hear the results of more than 10 years of tireless pest trapping by the Friends of Flora with Kea, Kiwi, Tui, Bellbird, Whio and Kakariki among the many native species thriving in this sanctuary-like forest. And if you’re down in Fiordland, you’re spoiled for choice. Hope Arm Hut, on the shores of one of NZ’s most beautiful lakes – Manapouri – could be a good option.

DEGUSTATION
Wine and Dine Wine labels to look for when Dining in New Zealand
We hope you take the opportunity while on holiday or taking a short break, to enjoy discovering our 4 favourite winery, degustation experiences shown here, but also to order and taste while you are at Lunch or Dinner anywhere in our beautiful country some of these fabulous wine labels and wine producers that you can find on the best Restaurants wine lists. Runner Duck Syrah 2007 This 07 vintage was harvested in April 2007 @ 24 Brix, pH 3.62, TA 6.4 and was 20 months in oak, two thirds of which was new French oak and the balance American oak. It is a medium bodied, dark red coloured wine with a lovely cherry bouquet and a hint of tobacco. It is savoury and spicy on the palate with hints of black pepper and dark plums. Match it with smoked cheddar or spicy food. Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir 2006 At the time of release, the wine has a rich, ruby hue with a hint of vermillion. The aromas and flavours show complex intertwining of fruity and savoury elements. There is depth and concentration in the mouth, but it avoids being ponderous and heavy, remaining light and lively. While ready to drink on release, with careful cellaring it should develop additional layers of complexity for 8-12 years after harvest and live well beyond this. 26

Amisfield Pinot Noir 2008 This wine won Gold in the International Wine Challenge and has the highest points ever awarded to a Central Otago Pinot Noir 93 points, by the highly rated American Wine Spectator magazine. This award winning wine is deep ruby in colour with complexity of aroma - berry fruit, violets, mocha and spice. The supple palate shows lush dark fruits overlaying seamless velvety tannins. This Pinot Noir will reward from cellaring up to 8 years, drink now, you will not be disappointed! Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir 2009 This wine reflects the nature of a cooler vintage displaying great concentration and balance; red fruits of the forest dominate the aroma and these are underpinned by black cherry, Christmas cake spice and savoury herb. The wine has a dark concentrated front palate, which displays these same characters in abundance. The mid palate is fleshy and well textured. The wine finishes with a lovely combination of sinewy tannin, fruit and acidity.

WINE TOURS
Vineyards Honey & Black Sand Beach Tour By Emma Scarpella of Melbourne
From the moment our party left the hotel and cruised to the tranquil countryside, our enthusiastic host John gave a lively commentary on the history of the families responsible for establishing vines in West Auckland since the early 1900's. Curiously, on two occasions New Zealand was close to introducing total prohibition. Fortunately for us this didn't occur! Our first stop was to visit historic Kumeu River Wines. John had full behind the scenes access and we were treated to a detailed talk on how their stunning Chardonnay wines are created. Full of interesting facts, John told us that the wine barrels are actually imported from France at a staggering cost of $1,700 a barrel. It was amazing to learn the science behind an outstanding drop of wine and the talents of the people making them. Standing amongst the barrels, we could hear the popping of carbon dioxide rising during fermentation, making us really feel part of the process. Seeing the workers seated beneath the vines taking lunch topped off a wonderful opportunity to be a fly on the wall at an award winning winery. By now we were all more than ready to start tasting wine. Our host gave us a running commentary on the wines we were tasting and was very specific about what flavours we could taste with each wine, e.g. pear and peach. It was wonderful to be able to have an “ah huh” moment and identify the individual flavours. Our next stop was Nobilo’s, which is a household name in New Zealand established in 1942. After tasting more wines, our group was becoming quite merry and in need of something to line our stomachs. We jumped back in the van and headed down the road to Bees Online, an artisan 28

honey producer. We dined alfresco next to the outdoor fireplace, selecting delicious meals from their seasonal luncheon menu. The fabulous menu ranged from venison sausages in puff pastry to fish of the day with crab ravioli, with honey cleverly incorporated into the dishes. Between ordering and our meals arriving, John led us over to the honey tasting area. Complimentary tastings of a wide variety of flavours were available, both sweet and savoury, from apple infused to avocado. It was interesting to learn the medicinal properties of some varieties of honey, made by bees from the flowers of the Manuka tree. No one left empty handed. We hit the road again, to visit the black sands of Muriwai beach, one of Auckland’s famous wild beaches of the west coast. From our vantage point high above the beach, we saw a large pack of surfers enjoying the swell. Sadly the last of the gannets had left Muriwai for their annual migration to warmer climes, but we had a great view of their breeding areas. As one of only two gannet colonies in New Zealand, it is a must see. Our last stop was Matua Valley Wines, the earliest producers of Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand in the early 1970’s. Along with sampling their award winning wines, our group shopped for chocolate and cheese and gourmet treats. It really capped off a day of relaxation and great company. Fellow travellers on this tour had visited wineries all over the world, from Napa Valley to Bordeaux, but said this was the best wine tour they had ever been on. They were full of compliments about our host, as his knowledge was second to none.

RECOMMENDED NZ EXPERIENCES
Our Favourite Activities and Tours in NZ Highly Recommended
Gray Line Sightseeing offers premium coaches, which depart and return to most major New Zealand cities. With informative commentaries in multiple languages, friendly drivers and guides, and fantastic glass roofed coaches on some of their Milford Sound trips from Queenstown, Gray Line is the obvious choice in guided coach touring. Crown Car Rentals is one of the newest car rentals companies in New Zealand and they have one of the coolest vehicles available. We recommend you try their Toyota Prado or Ssangyong Rexton 4WD’s for the ski season. Very impressive. Explore NZ, in the Bay of Islands and Auckland, are the company of choice for anything to do with Dolphins, Whales, Sailing or On the Water options. They have a world renowned reputation, at any age their Dune Rider experience, boogie boarding down sand dunes, is a must do. For small group sightseeing, holiday or weekend experiences not covered by one of Milestone Tour options, they can tailor a range of other itineraries for you or your group. Either personal or corporate, if you’re looking for something specific, or even specialist, the chances are they can help.

RECOMMEND NZ Magazine | Winter 2011
Highly recommended is any one of Helilink’s Heli-Dining Experiences, with excellent helicopters and terrific pilots, right in Auckland ’s city centre. If you’re looking for that special treat or just love the luxury lifestyle, phone them to discuss the options available. John at NZWINEPRO is one of New Zealand ’s best wine tour operators. Check out the Wine Tour story earlier in this magazine, which gives you a good glimpse of his talents. Take one of his scheduled tours or speak with John to arrange a customised group trip. Red Carpet Tours are the original Lord of the Rings tour company, operating since 2001. The company is built for and by fans of The Lord of the Rings movies and the upcoming prequel movie, The Hobbit. They operate day tours from Auckland to Hobbiton, in Matamata, so you can check out the original Hobbit holes from the first movies. Fullers ferries, which depart from the Ferry Terminal in Downtown Auckland on Quay Street, are the best way (other than taking a Helilink Helicopter) to get to Waiheke Island. Fullers Waiheke Vineyard Tours are also the most popular on the Island and are highly recommended!
Top left: Maori art in Rotorua. Above: Glacier Hot Pools on the West Coast of the South Island. Above Right: Whale Watch Kaikoura. Bottom Right: Bush and Beach parked up at Piha Beach, Auckland.
New to Auckland late last year, Auckland Adventure Jet is located next to the Ferry Terminal Building on Quay Street. Experience 360 degree thrills on this fantastic harbour experience, before picking up your photo to take home. A fantastic New Zealand memory. We recommend Great Tastes Tours’ full day tour of Matakana. Matakana is one of the tastiest destinations in New Zealand, with multiple artisan food and wine producers. You will be delighted with this experience. In to nature? Or coast and country? Bush and Beach is our most popular and recommended small group eco-tour company in New Zealand. Their Coast and Rainforest or Wilderness Experience options will take you to one of the Number 1 things anyone should do in Auckland; Piha Beach. On the wild west coast of Auckland, this is a must-do. The Waitomo Caves are a village and cave system and a major tourist attraction in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand, only 12 kilometres northwest of Te Kuiti. The Footwhistle Glowworm Cave Tour is the newest cave tour to open in Waitomo and highly recommended. Take the candlelit Night Tour, it is so pretty.
The Lost Spring is an exceptional 6 Star experience; like stepping into another world. Soak in the pool whilst sipping on a cocktail. You won’t believe this place until you see it; it’s like being in another world and is well worth the drive. Raft or kayak with River Rats in Rotorua. Their many options suit the novice up to the intermediate level. We recommend the guided Kayak Trip, which includes time in a natural hot spring that New Zealanders have been enjoying for decades; historic and scenic at the same time. Huka Falls in Taupo is New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction and with Hukafalls Jet you will get as close as you can to these spectacular falls. When you stand above the falls, on the boardwalk, the water thunders under your feet. But it’s when you are in a Hukafalls Jet boat you truly get to see it in it’s absolute glory. Te Papa in Wellington is the official Museum of New Zealand. This is where hundreds of thousands of people come to experience what New Zealand's art, history and culture is all about. Under one roof you will see some of the most amazing exhibitions in the world.

RECOMMENDED NZ EXPERIENCES
Just 10 minutes from central Wellington, ZEALANDIA is a unique ecoattraction. Visit this state-of-the-art indoor exhibition, then step inside a predator-proof fence which incorporates a beautiful 225ha (550 acre) ecosanctuary, to view some of New Zealand 's rarest birds, reptiles and insects in the wild. Discovering the South Island is easy with Real Journeys. They have so many options, including the TSS Earnslaw (Lady of the Lake) cruise to Walter Peak in Queenstown, and cruising the major Sounds such as Milford and Doubtful. Any of their overnight Fiordland cruises are a must-do magical experience. For wine and food experiences in Marlborough, Marlborough Travel are the tours we recommend, with fantastic options suiting any budget. The team are friendly and efficient and take you to some of the best wineries and locations in the upper North Island. Check out their highly recommended Greenshell Mussell Cruise. Franz Josef Glacier Guides have excellent Glacier Walk and Heli Hike options, which you have to experience at least once in your lifetime. After a hike enjoy a soak in one of the Glacier Hot Pools nearby. Their private hot pools option is tremendous, book ahead and enjoy. 44
RECOMMEND NZ Magazine | Winter 2011
West Coast Wildlife Centre is the best place in New Zealand to get up and close with our native bird the Kiwi, which is much larger than we imagine and nocturnal. Visit this wonderful attraction in the heart of Franz Josef when cruising up or down the West Coast. See our story earlier in the magazine on the Fox Glacier Guiding tours. One of our team went and did the experience and highly rated it. The Glacier is incredible and we suggest you make the most of it and stay overnight on the West Coast, southern hospitality abound. Air Safaris operate 'The Grand Traverse' which is the premier Aoraki Mount Cook flight-seeing experience. This magnificent flight encompasses 10 major glaciers, two World Heritage National Parks and 200km of stunning unique scenery. Stop in at Lake Tekapo or Franz Josef where you see their signs. At Lake Tekapo you will also find the experts in the stars, Earth and Sky. They have unique evening tours and their cafĂŠ is highly rated by the Lonely Planet Guide. Stop in for a coffee, just for the views, or take one of their scheduled tours. We think their night tour is the best star gazing in the world.

Whale Watch Kaikoura is one of New Zealand ’s biggest visitor success stories. The Giant Sperm Whales are naturally found in this environment and weigh over 50 tons. Kaikoura is the most popular whale watching location in the world and Whale Watch Kaikoura are the number one company operating in the town. Only one minute drive from Christchurch Airport, you will find the International Antarctic Centre. With so many superb experiences under one roof, there is something that will excite anyone of any age. This is also home to the New Zealand Penguin Encounter. Up, Up and Away is the very best ballooning experience in New Zealand. Nowhere else can you see from the East Coast to the West Coast and over the Southern Alps. This ballooning experience is incredible; have a glass of bubbles and enjoy New Zealand’s exceptional scenery .
Onsen Hot Pools allow you to relax after the days activities. Private and overlooking one of the most beautiful canyons in the world, you can enjoy with friends or as a romantic evening out. Enjoy the candlelit hot pool; a perfect proposal spot with bubbly as an option.
Queenstown Rafting’s amazing team of professional raft guides from all over the world (they only select the best) assure one of the best rafting experiences you will ever have. We recommend you take the Heli-Raft option, as it isn’t that much more expensive and don’t worry about doing this in Winter, it is so beautiful when the canyon is covered in snow and icicles.
Experience New Zealand flightseeing at its best, with a Milford Sound tour from Air Milford. Choose from the fun, friendly scheduled or exclusive flightseeing options. Air Milford is a personalised aviation company, with exceptional aircraft. Heli Tours provide a variety of heli experiences in the South Island, from regular Queenstown Scenic Flights, to Heli-Wine and Heli-Lodge options. They have excellent helicopters, a fantastic friendly team and packages to suit any budget. Check out some people landing at Mt Difficulty in one of their helicopters on the front cover of this magazine. RECOMMEND NZ Magazine | Winter 2011

Les Clefs d'Or Concierge Society of NZ
Welcome to the Seventh Edition of Recommend New Zealand Magazine, The Concierges Guide to the very best of New Zealand. We have another busy quarter ahead for the society with some very exciting events. Coming up, Late July we will be hosting our 17th Annual General Meeting and Inaugural UICH Oceania Congress in Auckland. This event will bring both Les Clefs d’Or members from New Zealand and Australia together for further networking. We will also be holding our annual Les Clefs d’Or NZ Ball in November! The Hotel Concierge Society Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand, is a non-profit, non-political professional association, with the country’s best hotel Concierges as members. As a national chapter of the prestigious Union Internationale des Concierges d‘Hotels Les Clefs d’Or, we have the responsibility of spreading the word in New Zealand of the ideals and ethics of our society, promoting professionalism in the hospitality and tourism industry through the concept of “service through friendship”. This means that we must set an example to the industry as a whole, displaying the highest standards of professionalism, honesty and integrity, and above all friendship in our dealings with not only our guests, but within our hotels, and with our many and varied “suppliers”, who contribute to New Zealand’s outstanding success as a tourism and business destination. Recommend New Zealand Magazine is one way we, as an organisation, can contribute by helping promote those we recommend daily. We are proud to showcase the best suppliers, as recommended every day by New Zealand’s best Concierges. We hope you enjoy your time in beautiful New Zealand, and of course if there is anything you need, please do not hesitate to ask your friendly Concierge!
