The publishers, editor and authors accept no responsibility in respect of any products, goods or services advertised or referred to in this issue, or any errors, omissions, mis-statements or mistakes in any advertisements or references
to the August/September issue of Reconnect. My colleague Pete Hardy and I have more years’ experience in journalism than either of us care to mention – more years, in fact, than we can count (our expertise being in words rather than numbers), or even remember (there seeming to be some sort of age-related correlation between fading memories and expanding waistlines…). But we are both horrified by the work of certain tabloids that would have us believe that we’re all on some downward spiral of social breakdown and despair, mainly attributable, they would have us believe, to rising immigration and falling house prices and oh, how things would be different if only Princess Diana were still alive (and of course they know JUST who to blame for THAT…) Of course, those papers sell by being sensational – by creating sensations. And it’s a whole lot easier to create sensations of fear and gloom and despair than to give people hope, optimism and joy. Reconnect sees, and we hope reflects, things rather differently. Not idealistically – just more accurately. We do have a massive advantage in that we are a green living magazine and that is so obviously where our future lies. Even our Government – and every other major power in the world – can see it and says so in every other speech and throughout their manifestoes. It’s just that none of them has yet been able to get their heads (or their spin doctors’ rhetoric) around the one big shift that’s fundamental to facilitate the necessary change of direction – the move of emphasis and resources from the perpetuation of greed and ever-more growth to sustainability and the strengthening of community. But apart from occasional rants like this, Reconnect’s focus is on the positive: we don’t continually slag off supermarkets – we instead feature independent suppliers and community stores; we don’t scare-monger about climate change – we instead talk about locallyproduced renewable energy and greener transport; we don’t constantly highlight the failings of the NHS – we instead profile more holistic approaches that allow people to hold onto some independence and control over their own wellbeing. And there are numerous other examples – I’ll leave you to discover some of them elsewhere in this issue. Although there is undoubtedly an air of uncertainty around politics and economics right now, we take comfort from that because times of change are always a little unsettling. And slowly, but surely, people are beginning to find a new direction. It seems to us that as we start to feel the pinch, or feel less secure about our financial futures, it is all the more important we spend our money with local businesses – businesses that create local jobs for local people; businesses that produce and sell food and drink, products and services that have a TRULY positive effect on our lives; businesses that are successful and profitable but that maintain an awareness of the individual, the community and the wider world too.

We like to think Reconnect is a business with those ideals and we know the businesses we feature are too. And, as you can see from this issue, there are new businesses joining us all the time. So don’t let the media (or the politicians for that matter) get you down just to further their own ends. They think there’s money and power in your misery – but don’t let them have it. Spend it locally on things, and the people, you love. Remember, every grey cloud has a green lining.

Tree man Adam TREES are crucial to so many aspects of our lives. They provide the planet’s air conditioning, stabilise climate and provide food and shelter for so many parts of nature’s web, us included. But, as local tree expert Adam Griffin points out, so often we take them for granted. “The creation of new woodlands has halved in the new millennium,” he said. “We seem to have lost so much of the cultural reverence we once had for trees as cornerstones to society’s wealth - research shows 40 per cent of 7-11-year-olds have never visited a wood.” As a consultant, Adam has been working for almost 20 years to reverse this trend – “planting trees, watching what happens, seeing how
different parts of the wood rely on each other, how it’s all connected.” He said: “I’m really keen to talk to and encourage people to plant trees, native trees in particular, to help and support them in planning, assessment and design of a scheme. “It’s important to plant several of the same species, grown from a local seed source, into the right location and look after them - and there are still government grants and annual payments for your land even if it’s only an acre or two.” Call Adam on 07963 678 547, visit www.adamgriffinconsultancy.co.uk or email adam@adamgriffinconsultancy.co.uk.
The art of doing good business
PEOPLE looking to set up and run organisations with a social purpose can get action learning, tutoring and practical experiences on a new South Devon programme. The Dartington Hall Trustbased Devon School for Social Entrepreneurs (Devon SSE) is now accepting applications for its 2011 class from entrepreneurial people with a social conscience, who want to make a difference in their communities. The learning programme will run from January to December 2011 and includes 40 days face-to-
face training time, including fact-finding visits to successful institutions who share the Devon SSE commitment to providing social benefit. Devon SSE Project Development Manager, Matt Griffiths said: “We are looking for people with great ideas to achieve positive change in their communities and who have the resilience and passion to make them happen. “Our first year has gone really well, and we are now looking forward to 2011.” Application forms are available now from www.sse.org.uk and
Transition inspiration NOW in its second year, Transition Town Exmouth is one community that plans to learn from the experiences of Transition Town Stroud. At their annual meeting TTE members invited Green politician and Stroud councillor Philip Booth to give them an insight into one of the country’s most successful transition towns. Philip spoke of the many ups and some of the downs that TTS has experienced since it was set up in 2006. The successes have included: their own currency - the Stroud Pound; a 40-stall farmers’ market; a food hub called StroudCo linking local farmers and consumers; the Stroud Communal Allotment and the Garden Share Scheme.

all prospective candidates will be guaranteed an interview, provided they meet the application requirements and attend a two-hour taster session. Taster sessions are being held at: Dartington Hall (July 22 at 4pm, September 1 at noon and September 27 at 4pm); Devonport Guildhall (September 16 at 5pm) and at St Sidwell’s Centre, Exeter (September 29 at 5pm). Find out more or book a taster session place on 01803 847066, or email devon@sse.org.uk.
There’s also TripSwitch, where the public is encouraged to use forms of transport other than the car, a Green Travel Month and Changing Gear, a scheme encouraging secondary school pupils to cycle to school. And there’s the Open Homes scheme, where the public can see renewable energy in action, by visiting the houses of people who have taken significant steps to reduce their carbon footprint. Less successful was the Stroud Community Agriculture venture, a veg-box scheme which collapsed due to crop failure. TTE re-elected Jane Habermehl as chairman and Arthur White as treasurer. Peter Ashwin announced he was standing down as secretary and was applauded for his hard work. Peter Dennes was elected in his place.
TRANSITION Exmouth members proved it was possible to shop without using the car - even in the rain. Their festival food tour of Exmouth visited 13 local food shops by bike, including three butchers, two fresh fish shops, two bakeries, the indoor market and the wholefood store B Natural, outside of which they are pictured above. EU threat to supplements BACK in 2002, the EU passed directives designed to standardise vitamins and herbal supplements right across Europe.
It caused quite a stir at the time because, as is often the case, the plan was to tighten down the UK’s limits, to bring them in line with France, Germany and Spain, none of which have any supplement market to speak of. But the EU moves slowly. Slowly but surely. Like a tsunami. It would be years until the new directives would be fully implemented. Not until… 2011. Next year. Now, industry experts, including Jenny Macdonald MNIMH, a qualified herbalist and supplements coordinator at Greenlife wholefood store in Totnes, believes the Foods Supplements Directive will reek havoc. “They want to bring the UK in line with European countries where only the pharmaceutical companies can sell these supplements – to create a totally homogenised marketplace,” said Jenny.
www.reconnectonline.co.uk
“This will hit hard at personal choice and freedoms, and also at businesses and jobs.”
Jenny says supplements are a huge component in the business done by most wholefood stores – and that many will have to close if they lose that business.

And while the anti-supplement lobby says there’s no proof they work, Jenny says there’s no proof of harm either. “Even on the worst figures, there are only 75 recorded deaths in the whole western world as a possible result of taking herbs and supplements… in the last 150 years,” said Jenny. Those campaigning against these changes maintain there are already strict controls over the use of herbs and supplements under the 1968 Medicines Act. Building a reputation for integrity
Tom Hilliard with his dog, Shanti
WHEN South Devon builder Tom Hilliard read in our last issue that we were planning an Eco Homes section, he got straight on the phone (so if you work in the local green homes industry, and you’re now reading about Tom instead of your own business, you know what to do – see the bottom of the page for contact info). But while Tom wanted to be part of our Eco homes section from the start, he does not describe himself as an ‘eco builder’ – it’s all, he says, a matter of compromise. “Many people start out wanting a totally green project, but after doing their sums, they might settle for using environmentally friendly materials and techniques for just part of the work,” says Tom. His current main project is greener than most. His clients are planning to move themselves and their home-based business down to Devon from London and brought in Tom and his team of local craftsmen to transform

Cub route of low energy JUDGING by the crowds at Earls Court, some Reconnect readers will have made the journey to London for this year’s Ideal Home Show. And if you did, you’ll have been as impressed as I was, as Reconnect’s Commercial Editor, that renewable energy and other aspects of green living took centre stage. One of the most impressive exhibits was the Cub, the UK’s most energy efficient house. The Cub’s annual fuel bill, for heating, hot water and ventilation, is around £56 a year. It has been assessed as 98% efficient - when current regulations require new UK homes to be a minimum of 79% efficient - and is the UK’s first Code 5 approved modular off-the-shelf home. The code only goes to 6. On top of the fuel bill savings, a three-bedroom Cub will earn about £1,500 a year in government subsidies. Features include flow restrictors on taps and showers, a reduced flush loo system, rainwater harvesting, solar panels, super-insulation and low energy lighting.

All Cubs have exhaust air heat pumps for space heating, hot water and ventilation, and the air is circulated through filters reducing allergy and dust pollutants. Excluding planning and groundworks, a starter Cub house would cost you from £88,500, and it comes complete. Housing accounts for just over 30% of all carbon dioxide emissions in the UK – about 18.5% above 1990 levels.

Efficient by design INSULATION has a vital part to play in the reduction of energy consumption in any home, but a South Devon-based design consultant says homes built to passive house standards make the biggest savings of all - and have better indoor air quality than typical new builds. Known as Passivhaus in Germany, where the concept was first born, it sets ultra high levels of energy efficiency to create buildings that require little or no heating or cooling. Adam Dadeby is completing a MSc at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales and has studied Passivhaus theory. As we go to press, he is hoping to get planning permission to refurbish his own Dartington home and create a Passivhaus. “It’s important to realise the Passivhaus concept is not something that can be bolted on – it is integral to the design of a building,” he said. In fact, there is no complex

technology involved, he says. Instead, the building is designed and constructed to ultra-precise plans, and with special attention where different parts of the building meet meticulously selected materials, to ensure maximum airtightness and elimination of ‘cold bridging’. “Every aspect of the build is fed into specialist Passivhaus computer software, which accurately calculates what degree of efficiency can be expected,” said Adam. He says these principles can also be applied to other low-energy builds and he is keen to work with local architects. “Even if an architect doesn’t set out to achieve the Passivhaus standard, there are still massive savings to be made,” he said. The world’s got issues... A DRIVING force in the formation and development of the Transition movement, a pioneer in getting a better deal for junior doctors and now a specialist in the psychology of positive change... it was somehow inevitable that a book written by Chris Johnstone would combine at least two themes.
In fact, Find Your Power parallels the challenges of personal change – eg in relation to alcohol, tobacco, or dealing with life threatening illness – with those of defeating oil addiction or taking action on global issues. Find out more (about almost everything) at www. chrisjohnstone.info.

Work starts down on the farm VOLUNTEERS backing a community farm on the edge of Exeter have at last been getting their hands dirty preparing for next year’s crops. They got busy in July, preparing nursery beds and clearing the orchard, although the farm’s lease from the National Trust does not officially start until January 2011. The group has formed itself into an Industrial Provident Society with Benefit for the Community and is looking to raise about £120,000 to fund its first three years of operations - £90,000 from shares and £30,000 from grants and sponsorship.
www.macroschool.co.uk
Residents attending a public meeting
The project’s chairman, Cerian Henshaw, told the meeting the National Trust was providing a stockproof fence around the perimeter of the 32 acre farm and also putting in a drive.
Farm project chairman Cerian Henshaw, right, with Sophia Elek from the Home Grown Community Owned initiative and Simon Davies, the project’s acting vice chairman. heard how the farm will operate and how it intends to employ a paid grower to make the day-to-day management decisions while the community will be involved in planning and long-term decision making.
Members can own between one and 1,000 £20 shares and the farm will be managed by a management board, whose members can be dismissed by shareholders at the annual meeting.
New hedgerows would be planted and there would be ponds, woods and walks. One field, called Boohay, would be used for growing vegetables and the remainder would be for grass pasture.
THOSE ever-industrious souls at Sustainable Crediton ran a Grow Your Own stall at the Crediton Food Festival in June (see picture). The display included seeds, plants (some being grown for their seed), produce (strawberries, rhubarb, peas, jams and chutneys) and a composting feature to complete the cycle. They also handed out free packets of seeds and plenty of information, including seasonal recipes. The stand also promoted the group’s new local food website, www.creditonlocalproduce.co.uk, which is still growing as more and more local producers and retail outlets are added. The group had a break over July and August, but events start again in September, including a garden produce market, a plant swap with perennial plants, a fungus foray and a big seasonal supper on October 9 to celebrate the harvesting. Check it out on August 15 and September 19. And just see how many extra shops start opening on a Sunday as the town gets busier…
HOLDING the new Totnes Good Food Market on a Sunday (the third Sunday every month) was pure genius – it doesn’t clash with the popular Friday and Saturday markets and it gives visitors to the town something to check out on a day when, bizarrely, many of the shops don’t open.

Real Food plan for city THE call went out in June for the community of Exeter to get behind an inspired project to open The Real Food store, bakery and café in the city centre.
Country Markets Ltd. Visit one of over 400 Markets found around England, Wales and the Channel Isles. Taste our Home Made produce from Cakes, Savouries, Preserves and Honey. Enjoy your garden by purchasing flowers and Plants, Fresh Vegetables from our gardens all Home Grown. Purchase items of craft from many different regions of the country, in wood, paper, cotton and many mediums all Hand Crafted. Join Country Markets and become a producer. For details contact: Country Markets Ltd. email: info@country-markets.co.uk or look at our website for details of your nearest market www.country-markets.co.uk
And, as Reconnect goes to press, the team behind the project was hopeful they could reach their target of £190,000 by their July 23 deadline. The community share offer was launched on June 10 at a packed public meeting and by June 28 investment totalled £56,000. David Mezzetti, one of the directors of the Community Benefit Society set up to run the shop, said the total was increasing and by early July was halfway to the target figure. The chosen premises are a pair of shops in Paris Street, opposite the entrance to Princesshay, that have stood empty for some time. The plan is to open the store’s doors in October. Real Food will consist of four interlinked spaces over three floors. On the ground floor will be the food store, bakery and food service counter and upstairs the café’s main seating area and events space. The top floor will house the office and toilets.
AN artist’s impression of Exeter’s Real Food store, bakery and cafe The bakery will be operated as an independent business within the Real Food premises and will be owned by Emma Parkin of Emma’s Bread. If you want to invest, the minimum is £100 and the maximum £20,000. A share application form can be downloaded from www. realfoodexeter.co.uk.
Market for producers

ARE you looking for outlets to sell home-made baked goods and preserves, home-grown fruit, vegetables, plants and crafts? Well, there’s a nationwide network of 400 weekly markets across the country – and they’re looking for you. Country Markets is a co-operative owned by its members, which was allied to the WI until 2004 but is now entirely independent. With local markets in Ivybridge, Kingsbridge and Exmouth, it costs just 5p to become a life member of the Country Market Society. They can then produce as much or as little as they like to sell at the weekly market and at the end of the month each producer receives
payment for their sales minus a small commission to cover running costs and insurance. All public liability, health and safety and hygiene issues are covered (insurance is included, for example, and the co-op organises sessions on food hygiene). Markets in Reconnectland are: Ivybridge - Scout Hut, St Leonard’s Road PL21 0SL, Fridays 8.30 -11.30am; Kingsbridge - Town Hall Foyer, Fore Street, TQ7 1AL, Wednesdays 8am – noon; Exmouth – Methodist church hall, Tower Street EX8 1NT, Fridays 8.3011.15am. Plenty in store for the community MANY people have argued the merits of the village shop – not just as a place to buy provisions, but as the vital centre of a thriving community. Trouble is, business being what it is these days, it’s just so tough to make them pay. The solution is the community store, set-up and run by the people for the people. And it’s a movement that’s gathering momentum, with 243 currently registered with the Plunkett Foundation, the support organisation that runs the Community Shop Network – see www.plunkett.uk.net. (Even the people of Ambridge are at it).
They’re growing kids PRIMARY school pupils across Devon are taking part in a project called Dig Down South West and learning that growing your own food is child’s play. With the backing of insurance company Cornish Mutual, eighteen schools have created vegetable gardens to help pupils between five and eight take an active interest in gardening and learn about the benefits of growing their own produce. The Topsham School growers had a visit from Exeter Chiefs rugby stars Tom Johnson and Neil Clark (pictured right). Justin Vernon, teacher at The Topsham School, near Exeter, said: “We are always looking for ways of developing our Sustainability Curriculum and Dig Down South West seemed like an ideal opportunity.” Find out more at www.digdownsouthwest.co.uk.
There are many such projects across this area. The Broadhempston Community Shop, set up in April last year, has featured in Reconnect before, so this time we thought we’d drop in on Sandford Community Stores. In 2005, Sandford, just outside Crediton, found itself with no village shop and a post office just about to close, so they got together to do something about it. Raising £30,000 themselves convinced the Lottery Fund they were serious and a £92,000 grant was awarded. But just as important in making it succeed has been the commitment of village volunteers, who work alongside
the paid postmaster and assistant (they’ve held onto the post office too), to carry out a hundred and one other jobs, from delivering newspapers and cleaning the floors to stacking the shelves and ordering the 700 lines they stock. As management committee chairman Charlie Werner says: “Life has changed so much. If we want local services we have to do something about it ourselves. That’s what we did in Sandford and we hope it will continue for many years to come.” Tell us about your latest community project – email editor@ reconnectonline.co.uk.
Pupils run produce market A NEW farmers’ market has been running in Plymouth – organised by children aged 7-10. Pupils ran the Fare and Wide Farmers’ Market at Widewell Primary School in Plymouth, selling locally sourced, fair trade and homemade produce. With the help of local businesses, the children conducted market research and chose the name, produce, location and times to maximise the success of the project. The pupils worked with local food producers Langage Farm, Burts Crisps, Moostone Meats Farm, Manna from Devon, Nearly Naked Veg Co and Belinda Connolly. A spokesman for RIO, the Real Ideas Organisation, who helped run the project, said: “The market benefited the school and members of the local community.”

Shiatsu gets emotional THE ancient therapy of Shiatsu has seen remarkable changes since it arrived in the UK in the Seventies. Having been in practice for almost 30 years, Devon therapist Oliver Cowmeadow has been a leading light in shaping the therapy in the West by adding an emotional element. According to Oliver, Shiatsu in Europe combines Western anatomy and physiology, and that deeper emotional element, with oriental theory. “Shiatsu understands the human being as a system of energy – traditionally called Ki – that circulates through channels called meridians. These meridians have physical, psychological and spiritual functions. “In Shiatsu we contact the Ki and restore its natural flow by applying pressure with the hands, thumbs or elbows and with simple stretching and movement techniques. This can relieve many physical ailments and bring about healing on an emotional, mental and spiritual level.”
Oliver set up the Devon School of Shiatsu in 1985 based at Littlehempston, near Totnes. The school offers a foundation course over one year, a two-year course and a three-year course. To help students decide, the school also operates introductory weekends costing £95. The next weekend course is on August 28 and 29. Eco motoring
ECO motoring - a realistic aspiration for this modern age, or a simple contradiction in terms? Discusss. Okay, so using cars will never be truly green, but then we’ll never stop using cars, so how about we at least make it greener?
How to live without a car CAR users in South Devon can now think seriously about selling their cars (or at least their second cars) and reaping the rewards of a local car club. The pioneering Moorcar car club has been operating for nine years and has cars in South Brent, Dartington, Ashburton and Bovey Tracey. Now this successful community business is launching a new car club based in Totnes. Two fuel-efficient Toyota Aygos are parked up in reserved parking spaces at the railway station in Totnes and another two cars at Newton Abbot station. The new operation – known as E-cocars.com – is using the latest computer technology to handle bookings and invoicing and gives members the use of a car for only £3.95 an hour. Cars can be booked online or over the phone and drivers can even make or extend a booking from inside the
car. The onboard computer collects all the information about the journey time taken and distance travelled and at the end of the month members receive an itemised bill. There are now over 104,000 car club members in the UK, using 2,322 car club vehicles, and one car club vehicle can replace up to 24 privately owned cars. Jeremy Farr, the Moorcar co-ordinator, said: “We have to challenge the perception, ‘I need to own a car because it must be available when I need it’.
Mirror, signal, drive greener...
LEARNING to drive today is as much about fuel efficiency as it is about making a three-point-turn. The previous government introduced eco-driving measures to the UK driving test in 2008 and new drivers are now required to show they can drive with fuel-efficiency as well as safety. eco-drive is a Plymouth-based driving school committed to reducing its carbon footprint and teaching others to do the same. Victoria Edwards, who runs the school with her husband Rob, says they are also a carbon neutral school which means they offset your carbon usage as you learn to drive. Said Victoria: “eco-drive is committed to adopting as many environmentally-friendly practices as applicable and achievable within our overall goal to teach driving in an economical and environmentally friendly fashion. Where we are unable to do this completely (for example, running a car!), we will offset the carbon usage.” “Our eco-drive progress report book contains a set of 12 achievements. Get all 12 with us and we will pay to offset the carbon usage on your first car for a whole year!” Email eco-drive at office@eco-drive-school.co.uk, or telephone 01752 546770.
“We realise people have to be able to get around and cars are so convenient. We are providing that convenience but making it a community owned asset. This is all about a community directing its own future.” Call 07753 325 014, email info@moorcar.co.uk, visit www.e-cocars.com.
But adjust your driving style now and you can start improving the environment and your bank balance right away – whatever car you drive.
Devon County Council has got together with the Energy Saving Trust to make an eco driving DVD, which is available free to Devon drivers and can also be viewed online. By following the tips offered, you could save up to 15 per cent of your fuel bill and lower your CO2 emissions too - in
fact, the driver featured on the DVD saves 25 per cent on fuel (adding up to £250 over the year) and 600kg of carbon emissions. And if all the county’s private motorists reduced their fuel consumption by just 10 per cent, it would save around 150,000 tonnes of C02, equivalent to taking around 45,000
vehicles off the road.
The DVD shows simple ways of forward planning to make driving smoother and safer, as well as more economical. To get a free copy of the DVD, Eco-safe driving Making A Difference, or to talk to an expert about how to save money
Smells like gr WHILE it makes no sense at all to use land with food-growing potential for bio-fuel crops, producing bio diesel from used cooking oil seems very smart indeed. It makes so much sense, it’s odd there aren’t more producers around – we’re fortunate the only company in Devon and Cornwall licensed to make and sell the stuff is Greenearth in Crediton, up in the north western territories of Reconnectland (sometimes also known as Mid Devon).
The drive to cut car bills and omissions CHOOSE your next car carefully and you can make significant savings both in fuel bills and carbon emissions.
Mister Greenearth Diesel - Bill Brown
when driving, call the Energy Saving Trust on 0800 512 012. Lines are open 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. To watch the film online, visit www.devon.gov.uk/ ecodrivingfilm. Devon County Council is also backing Carfree Day on September 22 - visit www.worldcarfree.net
So what makes bio diesel such a wonderfuel alternative? For a start, the raw material is itself a waste product, of course. Greenearth buy theirs from one company, who collect it from food producers and outlets across the region. Once at Greenearth, it goes through a simple process called transesterification to make it less viscous and better suited for burning in engines.
Why own it? Just drive it! Book hatch & estate cars online 24/7, rent from 30 minutes to days & collect from on-street parking spaces near you. All fully insured, maintained and fuelled for just £3.95/hour & 23p/mile.

The only waste material is glycerin, which makes a perfect activator for bio digester plants. Unfortunately, there are only 30 or so bio digesters in the UK (against 4,000 or so in Austria), but Bill has been approached by Winston Reed, whose plans for a bio digester near Tiverton have recently been given the green light, so eventually, all Greenearth’s waste will go there. Many engines run happily on 100 per cent bio diesel, but some cars are less happy with it, and need a mix of bio and conventional diesel. “The best thing is for people to call me if they have any doubts,” says Bill, who currently sells roughly 75 per cent of their 5,500-litre weekly produce in tanks,
delivered free within a 30-mile radius. The remaining 1,500 litres or so is sold to individual motorists who fill up from a conventional pump at their premises on Crediton’s Lords Meadow industrial estate. Prices went up the week we visited, but they are still a few pence less than conventional diesel. And if you’re still not convinced, bio diesel is also less toxic than table salt, as biodegradable as sugar and produces 72 per cent less carbon emissions than normal diesel. Talk to Bill on 01363 777750, or visit www.greenearthbiodiesel.co.uk. *And yes, we know we’ve used it before, but we liked it so we’re using it again. The BBC run repeats all the time...
DO you feel guilty driving into work alone in a car designed to carry four, five or even more? Well, there is a simple way to share the costs of commuting with some of the other solo drivers you see every day. Carsharedevon, run by Devon County, Plymouth City and Torbay councils, currently has more than 7,600 members (the 7,777th member is about to be signed up in this, its seventh year) and has recently been named the best car share group in the UK. To find the details of someone travelling the same route as you, just register free at www.carsharedevon. com, which uses clever matching software to make connections. You cut costs, your community cuts congestion and the world cuts its carbon output. Jenny Lockett, who works for the Exe Estuary Partnership, based in Exeter, is one of the many who have found a transport match through www. carsharedevon.com. “Car sharing makes the drive to work much easier, especially the days that I don’t drive, and it gives me friends to chat to along the way,” she said. “Differing work commitments sometimes mean we are commuting at different times, or going to different locations, but it is easy to plan around these days and by having four of us there is always at least one other person to share with. “Joining Carsharedevon has really worked for me.” Find out more at www. carsharedevon.com.

“The Transition Together folder really was a catalyst for all this,” says Liz Waterson of Copland Meadow in Totnes. “We went from doing small things like buying a trolley to walk to the shops rather than driving to… oh good grief, we’ve got solar panels on the roof! 5/3/10 14:07:21 By the time you’ve 5/3/10 14:07:21 finished the process, you’ve made a big leap without even noticing.” Liz completed the Transition Together workbook with her neighbours last year as one of two pilot groups in Totnes and Dartington. Some people in the groups were so inspired by the process they helped TTT to successfully apply to the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to
Liz Waterson says the solar panels blend well with her windows Pic: Lou Brown fund a bigger project, Transition Streets. Funded by a £650,000 grant from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, households in eighteen Transition Together groups are having the solar panels fitted and will all benefit from the feed-in tariff, which pays for all electricity generated. And through South Hams District Council
there are also loans available for lowincome households - which can be repaid using the feed-in tariff. Anyone interested in forming a Transition Together group within the Totnes and Dartington area can call Lou on 01803 867358, email transitiontowntotnes@ gmail.com, or visit www.transitiontogether. org.uk.

Flue sweep cleans up THE revival of interest in log burners is no doubt pleasing log and logburner salesmen alike – but there’s another trade that’s also smiling. When was the last time you swept your flue? According to chimney sweep Kevin Jones, it’s a job that needs doing annually. A flue put back into use after a long lay off is an accident waiting to happen and fire crews are often called to chimney fires caused by accumulations of soot. There is also the danger from carbon monoxide poisoning. Kevin has been running Clean Sweep from his home in Willand for nearly five years and his clients stretch from Mid and East Devon into Exeter and beyond.
Chimney sweep numbers declined over the past 20 or 30 years as people installed gas fires, but the increase in sales of log burners has revived the trade. Said Kevin: “There are a lot of open fires with back boilers and there is a trend towards log burners because they are efficient.” Kevin charges £35 per flue, depending on how far he has to travel and how many clients he is catering for. He suggests calling him in the summer and not leaving it until the Autumn when business is manic as people light up their fires for the first time. Call 01884 821297 mob 07773 618524.
People who live in eco houses... FIND out more about what it’s like to live with renewable energy – from people who live with it. The Stove Guru
A Positive move west THE sunny South West is proving a big draw for renewable energy companies and one newcomer is setting a high standard for its competitors.
Positive Footprint is an award-winning Yorkshire-based installer that has opened an Exeter office following a similar move into London. Woodwarm stoves for room heating and/or central heating, flues, chimney systems and spares. Solar thermal and thermal store systems to consolidate your heating. Heritage ‘all-function’ ranges; 2, 3 or 5 ovens are very quiet, economical, powerful and efficient. Supply of materials for fitting and advice for trade and DIY.
The company won the Best Home Installation in this year’s Yorkshire and Humber Microgeneration Award, which showcases the best in smallscale renewable energy projects in that region.

It’s now three months since the Feed-in Tariff began and the first people with photo voltaic panels to qualify are putting in their first quarterly meter readings.
According to installer Chris Rudge, demand for installations is still on the increase despite a shortage of certain parts, such as inverters.
We work directly with you to deliver renewable energy solutions that will be financially and environmentally beneficial from the day they are installed.
But, said Chris, providing buyers stick to established PV installers they are likely to carry stocks of inverters to prevent delays. He said: “PV is just about the best long-term investment opportunity
around at the moment.
“The systems are straightforward to install, unlike solar hot water systems, the main work being carried out on the roof of the house with minimal wiring inside leaving domestic disruption to a minimum.” For the first two years of the Feed-in Tariff scheme, installations will attract a payment of 41.3p for every unit (kWh) generated. For a standard 2.5kWh PV system, this will mean an annual payback of £915 in payments alone. Chris said that by adding to this the huge savings on the electricity bill from using all the free power, the real savings added up to well over £1,000 a year, which was a better return than the bank and an insurance against big increases in fuel prices.

supplemented with solar thermal mounted on their conservatory. This was combined with a 40-hour battery back-up in the event of a power cut. The entry is believed to be the largest domestic solar PV array in mainland UK and covered the entire roof of the bungalow – see picture above. Positive Footprint MD Gary Chamberlain said the PV industry was really taking off in the UK as it had done in the rest of Europe. He said: “The Feed-in Tariff has really given home owners and businesses the right incentive both economically and environmentally to start installing PV.” Call 01392 248868 or 07932 760972, or visit www.positive-footprint.co.uk

WHEN The Stove Guru (aka Simon Keeping at Stoves and Spares) tells you how much you will earn by producing electricity using one of their PV solar systems, you can be sure he’s speaking from experience. “We produced a spreadsheet of cost and earnings to calculate the theoretical earnings of a system on our own roof,” said Simon. “And now we’ve installed a system to see what it actually produces in practice. We want to be able to speak to customers from experience.”

Stoves and Spares are now accredited PV installers – but as sub-contractors to system manufacturers Navitron. “Registration costs are high, so by installing under the wing of Navitron, we reduce the costs per installation, which in turn reduces the cost to the consumer,” says Simon. Rising from the flames... AGAINST all odds, Exeter’s mind, body and spirit shop Evolution has reopened for business after being out of action for three months. A fire in the early hours of May 1 led to the closure of the Fore Street shop and its treatment rooms. Although a relatively small electrical fire, the building suffered smoke damage and severe water damage. A major refit has run into thousands of pounds Evolution has been a part of the Exeter shopping scene for over 20 years and for the last 12 it has been run by Kay Harrison as a labour of love. Kay said she was full of praise for the
fire service who acted so quickly after the alarm was raised by a passer-by. She was also touched by all the good will messages, cards chocolates and flowers. “We will be welcoming new and old customers back to Evolutions now we are open again,” said Kay. “We are not able to open fully yet but will open the front third of the shop initially.” One change since the fire is that the shop will now be known as Evolutions - plural. In August Kay is planning events to celebrate her 12 years at the shop and asks everyone interested to watch out for notices in the window.

Enjoying a varied harvest WELL, it’s been a funny old summer, hasn’t it? Warm and wet, hot and cold, cloudy, windy and sunny… often all at the same time. It’s all had quite an effect on my allotment. Last year was great for potatoes, peas, carrots and plums, but these have all had a pretty tough time this year because of the cold, damp spring and the absence of the sun early in the first few months. But the asparagus has done really well, the strawberries have been about their best ever and the garlic has been amazing! An allotment remains delightful, an experience of a genuine commitment to life. Everything from tiny herbs to huge fruit trees, miniature flying insects to slugs and snails, birds and bees and badgers and foxes. As a result of which, an allotment is a great metaphor for living in the rest of the conventional world - including the financial sector. We may have a pretty good expectation of how vegetables will grow, but because the weather is becoming so unstable, it’s increasingly hard to predict how they will actually turn out. Of course there are a number of issues which remain consistent, things like the acidity of the soil, which doesn’t really change. But loads of things need to be kept under review and reacted to. One of the ways forward is to grow a number of plants which we can’t necessarily eat but which support everything else. There are certain types of flowers which attract bees, for example. And having a variety of wild garlic, lavender and sage produces both delightful colours and wonderful smells as well as discouraging carrotflies from eating your crops. Which is one of the advantages of growing plants which aren’t a direct part of your diet. All of which suggests a similarity in the financial sector. Like the allotment, we’ve had a couple of tough years where conventional investments which were usually predictable have done very badly. But some of the other, more alternative holdings have done really well. However, like asparagus, the fact that they did well one year doesn’t mean we can assume the same thing will happen again – at least not in the short-term - because if we manage to support them, while they may not perform as we anticipated in the next few months, it doesn’t mean they won’t do even better in the future. And that’s one of the reasons for having a diversified financial portfolio.
Bristol
Lots of people have been advised only to invest in holdings that will make as much money as possible. But that’s like only growing potatoes on the basis that you think you can rely on an enormous production. Irrespective of the effect that this also has on the soil. A better option is to have holdings in lots of different sectors, including lower-risk investments like ethical corporate bonds; and UK and global equities, supporting everything from organic farming, recycling and water treatment to sustainable and renewable energy; and commercial property; and organisations operating non-climate changing structures. This means that, like the combination of plants in the allotment, some will produce things we can eat directly, while others will support the process. And some of the plants may not provide now but will come back in the future, often better than expected. Especially if we have a commitment to look after all of them, not just the ones doing well now. One of the main aspects of having an allotment is the process rather than just the outcome. Much of the delight is our commitment to life, to growth, to existence - acknowledging and admiring both the plants we are planning to grow and the things that are totally unexpected. Great combination!
A walk on the edge IF you love the spectacular views along the Jurassic Coast path you may be interested in a charity trek being organised by Christian Aid. The two-day walk along the Devon and Dorset coastline begins in Sidmouth on September 17 and ends in West Bay near Weymouth on September 19. The route of the Jurassic Coast Challenge goes via Beer, Axmouth, Lyme Regis and Charmouth – a total of 24 miles. Registration costs £50, which includes tents, campsite fees and meals, and walkers are asked to raise a minimum of £500. Alison Gregory, Events Manager at Christian Aid said: “This walk is a real challenge but the views are well worth the blisters. Trekking events are a great way to get fit and make new friends, as well as raise money for Christian Aid’s vital work.” Register at www.christianaid.org.uk/events or call 0207 620 4444.

Holiday picture show THERE’S a great opportunity for Devon artists to get their work on the walls of a top gallery this autumn. The theme of the next open exhibition at Harbour House in Kingsbridge is Holiday Sketching, and artists can enter up to four pieces of work in any medium. The organisers say they’re looking for studies and sketches carried out on the spot while out and about (not necessarily on holiday - a walk along the coast path could be enough), and the finished studio works, in any medium, which result from this initial inspiration.

WELCOME to Wellbeing,
WHATEVER the ailment, the most effective way to work on it is with a steady and regular course of treatments, says Ramin, who practices acupuncture in and around Totnes as The Barefoot Doctor.
Reconnect’s new section dedicated to complimentary therapies and personal development. If you’re looking for a therapist, check out the stories on these pages, and the classified listings over the page. And if you’re a complementary therapy or personal development practitioner your self, this is the perfect place
to get your message across in Exeter, Plymouth, Totnes and the rest of South Devon. A single column box (61mm x 49mm) costs just £50, a double column box (125mm x 49mm) £90. And first-time advertisers can book three advertisements for the price of two – so a regular single column box costs just £100 for six months. That’s less than £20 a month!
College takes therapy global
Because he works on a donation basis, Ramin says he is able to base a course of treatments on the individual’s health requirements rather than their ability to pay. Ramin works with patients suffering from high blood pressure, ME, depression, chronic back pain and diabetes, to name a few. “Such conditions have materialised over a long period of time and require regular treatments and appropriate lifestyle changes that will support the recovery over a long-term basis,” he said. Ramin is holding a free monthly talk on the fourth Wednesday of every month at St John’s Church, Bridgetown, Totnes, entitled Your step-by-step guide to a healthier you. For information call 01803 814338, or email raminthebarefootdoctor @gmail.com.
And if you’re new to advertising, our designer will create one for a minimal charge. And we can help you decide on wording too. Give our Wellbeing specialist Louise Woods (above) a call on 07866 013 637, or email her at louise@reconnectonline.co.uk.

Michelle Hague with hypnotherapy students in Singapore
Malaysian joy
HYPNOTHERAPIST Michelle Hague is back lecturing in Exeter and around the UK after teaching with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis (LCCH) in Malaysia and Singapore. “The students at both the University Hospital in Malaysia and at the Singapore University were very welcoming,” says Michelle. “They made my first experience as a visiting lecturer a joy and I am looking forward to my next visit”.
Back in the UK, Michelle works from her busy clinical practices in East Devon and lectures in Exeter and around the UK for the LCCH, where courses run in Clinical Hypnosis at post graduate level and on to MSc in Clinical Hypnosis in partnership with Thames Valley University (TVU). Find out more at www.lcch.co.uk, email info@lcch.co.uk, or call Michelle on 01297 20144.
Mike Bridger, who runs The Contemporary College of Homeopathy (CCH) in Bristol, has just returned from Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, where he spoke at a seminar at the Simillimum School of Homeopathy. Mike and the Belgrade school’s principal have agreed to develop links between Bristol and Belgrade. Said Mike: “There were about 70 people at the two-day seminar. The students were some of the best I have encountered - dynamic, engaging and great fun.” In June, the Bristol college staged a free seminar to promote The Ghana Homeopathy Project, which encourages the use of homeopathy in primary care clinics. College lecturer and head of physiology Linda Shannon is a big supporter of the project and is now one of its three managers. For 30 years Linda has also been taking students over to India – but not to teach. Said Mike: “Our students go out and stay in villages with homeopathic doctors who treat patients from miles around.” The CCH is staging weekend beginners’ courses on August 7 and 8 and September 4 and 5. Call Kate on 0845 6032878 or email info@conhom.com.
EXETER Natural Health Centre is fast becoming the hub for many training courses and workshops based in Exeter and the South West. As well as massage training with the School of Bodywork, the centre also hosts training in kinesiology (Life Tracking) and from September, the Association of Reflexologists diploma course in reflexology. Also in September the ENHC is preparing to welcome the British School of Homoeopathy from its previous home in Bath. This four-year professional part-time course has been running for almost 25 years. The school prides itself on the clinical training aspect of the course and welcomes any applicants who have a genuine interest in wanting to go into practice and share in the privilege of helping people to become well. Graduates will be given a licence to practise and this allows them in turn to apply for registration with the main registering bodies. To apply for an interview and for more information, call Ali or Mo Morrish on 01392 422555 or email bsh@enhc.org.

New book looks at Energy Matrix FOR most of her life Christina Artemis has been bringing together her passions of drama, dance and spiritual healing to create a unique form of educational theatre. As an international spiritual teacher, Christina specialises in breathwork to probe human consciousness, but it was during an early conscious breathing session that she discovered what she now calls the Energy Matrix. And it is this discovery that has now prompted her to write a book revealing its secrets. Remembering the experience, Christina explained: “My whole body, mind and soul were vibrating in a huge energy field which I was later to understand, from reading books by Deepak Chopra, was known as the quantum field. “I felt totally connected to all in the universe. I was wide awake to my intuition in a way I had never experienced before.” Christina’s teachings are backed by
