Dear Librarians, As we celebrate the release of Robyn Carr’s Down by the River, we can look back and say that it’s hard to even remember when a new release from Ms. Carr wouldn’t grace the top of our Romantic Sounds imprint or debut at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. But would you believe that after writing her first novel in 1978, it took this popular author another 30 years to hit that bestseller list? Perseverance is the theme of Recorded Books’ 2014 First Quarter Imprints. Will Ferguson is a fine example. Born the fourth of six children in a remote Alberta town, his parents split up when he was six, and at the age of 16 he quit school. Now a major success story, Ferguson was runner-up for the 1999 Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction. He also went on to win the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour three times, and in 2013 his novel 419—a First Quarter Maple Leaf exclusive—won the Scotiabank Giller Prize for Best Canadian Novel and the Libris Award from the Canadian Booksellers Association for Fiction Book of the Year. Val McDermid grew up on the east coast of Scotland, close to the heart of the Fife coalfields, in Kirkcaldy, a small mining town famous for producing linoleum. Before becoming a fulltime novelist, she worked as a newspaper writer for 14 years. Ms. McDermid’s latest, Cross and Burn, is a featured Mystery imprint release. As a 21-year-old photojournalist, Southern Voices stalwart Carolyn Haines visited Mississippi State Penitentiary (also known as Parchman Farm) in the Mississippi Delta. Enchanted by the land’s stark contrasts of desolation and wealth, and the blues music that put words to its pain and beauty, she would work for another decade before finally putting pen to paper for her Sarah Booth Delaney mysteries. James Gunn’s Transcendental, a Sci-Fi Audio exclusive, marks the 64th anniversary of the author’s career as a sciencefiction writer. To put that in perspective, Ronald Reagan was 38 years old when Gunn’s first short story was published. Our imprint authors have worked for their success. So queue up a title on your smartphone, computer, or tablet via our OneClickdigital app and show them a little love. Brian Sweany Director of Acquisitions
