At First Blush: Discovering New Authors eaders often turn again and again to the familiar when choosing their next book, whether it be a favorite author or the next title in a beloved series. By doing so people embrace the comfortable, confident in the pleasures of the reading experience lying before them. Most readers will also acknowledge, though, that while diving into a book by a new author may be

New Authors, New Media emember when authors existed, at least in the minds of their readers, in some impossibly far away realm, if not an ivory tower than at least an isolated cabin, only to emerge at the rare book signing? Not so anymore. Changes in the industry have placed more and more responsibility on authors’ shoulders for marketing their work—and themselves. Whether using Facebook, Google+, Twitter, or blog sites, authors are reaching out to their fans like never before. Not only are fans more aware of upcoming release dates and information about new projects, but they are able to provide immediate reactions to authors’ works. Authors who publish serially online are thus able to gather input from their readers and allow that to shape the course of their stories. In this way, the line between author and audience has blurred slightly, perhaps leading to a more collaborative author-reader experience. How far will this go? Only time will tell.

ny number of authors will tell you that if you’re interested in making money, you should do anything but write. Anything. This isn’t to say that there aren’t successful authors. There are, of course. But with all the many writers struggling for attention, they are in the minority. The vast minority. Sure, the Internet has made it easier than ever before to publish your work online, but it’s also made it more difficult for any particular work to attract notice. So why do it? Is it the human inclination to beat the odds? To create? Is it love of the craft? Many authors will tell you that it’s a simple need. They would write whether they got paid or not. They would write on a desert island. For them writing is the air they breathe. Whatever the case, we’re happy to offer this selection of new authors. They’ve persevered, and they’re well on their way. This is our chance to salute them.

With New York Times bestselling books, a smashhit TV series, graphic novels, and enough merchandise to fill a realm, Game of Thrones is a true cultural sensation. But George R.R. Martin isn’t the only bestselling fantasy author on the block, and Michael J. Sullivan has quickly climbed the ranks of the most popular fantasy authors. This quote from Publishers Weekly on his novel Theft of Swords says it all: “Hair-raising escapes, flashy sword fights, and faithful friendship complete the formula for good old-fashioned escapist fun.” To top it all off, Sullivan is one of those rare writers who has successfully made the transition from selfpublished author to backing from a major publisher for his print releases. We couldn’t be happier to record his epic storylines, and we know you’ll enjoy these sterling narrations from acclaimed vocal talent Tim Gerard Reynolds.

At their heart, memoirs and biographies tell of the choices people make during life’s most pivotal moments The Cooked Seed A Memoir by Anchee Min Narrated by Angela Lin
CD: $123.75 $99.00 Chinese-American author, musician, and painter Anchee Min came to the United States in 1984 after growing up in—and ultimately escaping—the Cultural Revolution in Maoist China. Her first memoir, Red Azalea, won the Carl Sandburg Literary Award and landed her on the New York Times Notable Book list. Spending her youth on a collective farm, Min was spared a lifetime of manual labor when she was selected at age 17 to take part in propaganda films. Initially a fervent supporter of communism, Min became increasingly disillusioned with Mao’s teachings after her arrival at the Shanghai Film Studio. Amidst widespread abuse of power by her superiors and Mao’s death in 1976, Min received help from actress Joan Chen and was accepted to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1984. The follow-up to Red Azalea, The Cooked Seed tells the next piece of Min’s story. From building a life in a land where she doesn’t know the language to the challenges of escaping poverty and the beauty of caring for her family, Min’s struggle toward self-actualization elevates this from a classic immigrant story to one that is universal. “An uplifting work of incredible grit and fortitude.”—Kirkus Reviews

From Elm Creek to the Civil War,
J e n n i f e r C h i av e r i n i Bewitches Audiences Across Time
New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini is perhaps best known for her wildly popular Elm Creek Quilts series (and also the five collections of quilt patterns inspired by these beloved books). Her audience, though, has proven that their love for her work extends beyond the cozy confines of Elm Creek and into the realm of her historical fiction. Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker introduces listeners to Elizabeth Keckley, who served as a trusted confidante to First Lady Mary Lincoln. Chiaverini’s splendid novel provides an unusual vantage point for a momentous period of time, and it’s no wonder the New York Post proclaimed this work “required reading.” With The Spymistress, Chiaverini enthralls listeners with the story of Elizabeth Van Lew, a most remarkable woman who risked everything to care for Union soldiers and steal Confederate secrets. Helping to construct the Richmond Railroad and orchestrate escapes from the famed Confederate Libby Prison, Van Lew is someone sure to leave an indelible impression in the minds of listeners everywhere.

Excellence
T
he challenges of writing good historical fiction are manyfold. Readers want to inhabit the world of whatever time period the author is writing about, and they fully expect this world to be re-created in exacting detail. For authors, this means research, research, and more research. But it also means introducing historical details naturally and not burdening readers with extended passages of exposition. Dialogue is another challenge. Authors have to beware of their characters sounding too modern. But
there’s also a tendency to think that people in the past spoke with the utmost formality, and the best historical fiction authors use appropriate, time-based slang to contribute to their characters’ authenticity. Anachronisms are also something that discerning readers will readily point out—much to the author’s embarrassment! In short, writing historical fiction is a demanding occupation, but when it’s done well, there is no other reading experience quite like it. We hope you enjoy these winners from the best in the field.

For Linda Lael Miller, the Sky’s the Limit Like most successful authors, “First Lady of the West” Linda Lael Miller dealt with her fair share of rejection before selling her first novel (Fletcher’s Woman, 1983). Once given her big break, however, Miller’s love of writing could not be denied, and she’s gone on to publish across a wide variety of genres, climbing bestseller lists and eventually landing the prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award from the Romance Writers of America.
Miller is perhaps most comfortable penning tales with a Western flavor, and nowhere is this better experienced than in her New York Times bestselling Big Sky series. Setting these beloved novels in Parable, Montana, Miller nails small-town details and perfectly captures the hopes and dreams of her aspiring heroines and rugged heroes. As Publishers Weekly said, “Miller tugs at the heartstrings as few authors can.”

orn in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Edwidge Danticat carries with her a love for her birthplace that’s very much alive in her beautifully rendered fiction. A young child when her parents moved away to America, Danticat was immersed in Haiti’s rich tradition of storytelling, and she began writing at the tender age of nine. Danticat then joined her parents in Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 12. Now one of literature’s most respected young voices, the Haitian-American author was nominated for the National Book Award at 26, and as is apparent in her sparkling works, her homeland is never far from her thoughts.
“Danticat’s captivating descriptions of Ville Rose, a seaside town in Haiti, engulf the reader’s psyche.” —Booklist

The process of sending bestselling and award-winning audio titles out to libraries across the country— and around the world—begins with the Recorded Books acquisitions team. No one at Recorded Books works more closely with publishers and agents to select the best audio titles, and as team members will attest, it’s a job that comes with more than its fair share of rewards. Children’s acquisitions lead Melanie Donovan here sums up her obvious enthusiasm for her work: “One of my favorite things about acquiring books for audio is listening to the recording for the first time. You always hear things you missed when reading the manuscript, a nuance of character the narrator uncovers, or the pronunciation of a name you aren’t quite sure about. And then, too, there’s just the pure pleasure of being read to, and read to well. You never out-grow that!” www.recordedbooks.com

Who’s Reading YA Fiction? As The Hunger Games stormed its way to mainstream popularity as both a chart-topping book and blockbuster film, one of the most noticeable aspects of the phenomenon was its appeal to audiences of all ages. Young adult (or YA) fiction may be targeted at readers between the ages of 12 and 18 years, but it’s obvious that the genre’s appeal extends well beyond those boundaries. In fact, recent studies have shown that over half of those reading YA titles are over the age of 18. This has led to a blurring of the line between YA and adult titles (not to mention the growing category of so-called new adult readers). Why does YA fiction have such widespread appeal? The most accurate answer might be the simplest one: no matter the intended demographic, readers will flock to a good story, well told, with universal themes. So keep an eye on who’s listening to your YA titles. And don’t be surprised if a majority of them are well over voting age.
