Other than your amazing voice, what personal characteristic do you attribute to your success as a narrator? I really think that is a question for my listening readers to answer. I wish I could be totally unnoticed so the listener simply hears the story and never gives a thought to who the performer is or what I am doing technically, but I am not sure that that is entirely possible. So, I would say it is my ability to be fully engaged in the story I am performing. Is there a hobby that our librarians might be interested in knowing about you?

Mrs. Lincoln’s Rival
She penned her first novel while teaching part-time at Penn State. Published in 1999, The Quilter’s Apprentice introduced readers to such beloved characters as Elm Creek Manor matriarch Sylvia Bergstrom Compson Cooper and new-to-the-craft accountant Sarah McClure. Praised by RT Book Reviews for blending “long-forgotten snapshots of America’s past with style, grace and respect,” Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker shifted the stage from presentday Elm Creek to 1860s Washington, D.C., in this retelling of the life of Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, a slave who was chosen to be First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln’s modiste. Frequently paired with veteran narrator Christina Moore, Chiaverini’s novels are painstakingly researched, giving her work an intimacy and authenticity few can match.

Amish Fiction
ubbed “bonnet rippers” by the media, Amish fiction focuses on family, fidelity, and faith, with a healthy dose of innocent romance for good measure. Think longing glances and tender kisses rather than steamy sex and scorching affairs. Credited with the creation of the genre, New York Times bestselling author Beverly Lewis penned the 1997 novel The Shunning, which tells the story of Katie Lapp, a 22-year-old Amish woman drawn to the Englisch world after learning of her family’s shocking past. Nearly 20 years later, The Shunning has sold more than one million copies, inspired the Hallmark Movie Channel feature film of the same name, and introduced a quieter, wholesome way of life to a world eager for simplicity. LITERARY FICTION
WE BET YOU CAN’T LISTEN TO JUST ONE TALE The magic of the best short fiction lies in its ability to perfectly crystallize a moment in a character’s life, and within that brief moment, a world of possibility is opened for the reader. When assembling a collection of short fiction, authors take great pains to arrange the pieces so the stories operate both independently and in concert with each other. In this way, a good collection has a symphonic quality, with the tone and theme of each story
complementing other pieces in much the same way various instruments blend in the finest orchestras. Below you’ll find three of the best short-story writers at work today. Once listeners hear a story from these awardwinning, universally acclaimed writers, you can bet they’ll be hooked.

“The 12 stories of Trevor’s latest collection blend an orchestra conductor’s feel for subtlety with a monsignor’s banishment of moral ambiguity. … The book itself recalls Joyce’s Dubliners in making melancholia a powerful narrative device.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review “[Trevor’s stories] are complex, fragile, breathing creations.”—New York Times
“Marcus presents a deeper range of identification for the reader, more emotional complexity, but still plenty of the chair-gripping alienation that marked his previous books … Thoroughly and perversely entertaining.” —New York Times Book Review
“In this accomplished, moving collection of stories about boys, she proves the uselessness of the old dictum that you should write what you know.”—New York Times “In tough, sometimes brutally lyrical language, she gives young, desperate voices—including their slang—full rein of the stage.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Book lovers across the world were sorry to learn of the passing of Peter Matthiessen, 86, who died on April 5, 2014, from complications with leukemia. The author of more than 30 books, Matthiessen left a rich legacy as an American novelist, naturalist, wilderness writer and CIA agent. Matthiessen was a co-founder of the Paris Review and a three-time winner of the National Book Award. An environmental activist, he focused much of his work on nature, travel, and Native-American issues and history. His story “Travelin’ Man” was made into the film The Young One in 1960 and his novel At Play in the Fields of the Lord was made into the 1991 film of the same name.
In a statement, Matthiessen’s editor, Rebecca Saletan, said,
In Paradise Peter Matthiessen Narrated by Mark Bramhall

Men We Reaped offers an unflinching look at how these young black men, one by one, fell to drugs, accidents, suicide and sometimes just plain bad luck. With razor-sharp insights, Ward reveals a community plagued by historic racism and economic despair. YIYUN LI
amed by Newsweek as “one of America’s best young novelists,” Chinese-American author Yiyun Li has never written fiction in her native Mandarin. Li began her celebrated writing career in English, as a graduate student at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her highly praised fiction—which some call “fatalistic” and others compare to Chekhov’s spare style—has appeared in the New Yorker, the Paris Review, Best American Short Stories, and elsewhere.

Kinder Than Solitude, Li’s “quietly heartbreaking new novel” (Boston Globe), is both a mystery and a tale of lost hope among China’s youth. Shaoai—a young protester in China’s Tiananmen Square uprising of 1989—is poisoned, and one of her three friends is the likely culprit. Shaoai spends the next 20 years in a coma while her friends scatter across the globe, avoiding each other, their guilt, and close human connections.

JASON MATTHEWS NABS BEST FIRST NOVEL AWARDS The Mystery Writers of America selected Jason Matthews’ electrifying novel Red Sparrow as the winner of the 2014 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best First Novel by an American Author. Each year, the Edgar Awards honor the best in mystery fiction, nonfiction, and television. In addition to the Edgar, Red Sparrow was also awarded Best First Novel from the International Thriller Writers—not a bad haul for the author’s first time out of the box. There’s no doubt that Matthews’ 33 years as a CIA field operative lends his debut an unmatched authenticity, prompting the New York Times Book Review to call it “a primer in 21st-century spying. Matthews’ former foes in Moscow will be choking on their blinis when they read how much has been revealed about their tradecraft … terrifically good.” Save 50% on all CD and eAudio formats. | www.recordedbooks.com

A LIFE-ALTERING WORK FROM A BOY YOU WILL NEVER FORGET Named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR • Wall Street Journal • Bloomberg Businessweek • Bookish “With about one in 88 children identified with an autism spectrum disorder, and family, friends, and educators hungry for information, this inspiring book’s continued success seems inevitable.”—Publishers Weekly “Anyone struggling to understand autism will be grateful for the book and translation.”—Kirkus Reviews There are books that change your life and books that change the way you see the world. Very rare indeed is the work that could fundamentally change your understanding of a loved one. The memoir of a 13-year-old boy with autism, The Reason I Jump is such a book.
The Reason I Jump The Inner Voice of a ThirteenYear-Old Boy with Autism Naoki Higashida Translated by KA Yoshida and David Mitchell Narrated by Tom Picasso CD $30.75 $15.38 eAudio $28.00 $14.00
Using an alphabet grid, Naoki Higashida was able to express thoughts he was incapable of speaking aloud. In so doing, he shed light on the inner life of an autistic child, providing parents everywhere with newfound tools to enhance their relationships with their own autistic children. Through his utterly unique voice, Higashida not only provides insights on autism; he also provides a deeply affecting commentary on life itself. About the Translators The bestselling author of such universally praised works as Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell, along with his wife, KA Yoshida, had a very important reason for tackling this particular translation, which turned out to be a true labor of love. Mitchell and Yoshida are themselves the parents of an autistic child. Having found this book immensely helpful in their own efforts to understand their son, they knew that they could perform a great service to other parents by bringing this work to English audiences.

In this affecting memoir, A. J. Albany tells of her childhood spent traveling through L.A.’s music scene with her father, noted jazz pianist Joe Albany. From the smoke-filled dives where Joe performs to the seamy hotel rooms she and her smack-addicted father call home, this riveting account delivers a raw portrait of a young girl’s odyssey through Hollywood’s sordid underbelly.
“Her prose resembles the shimmering complexity of bop, with its feelings of tight yet improvisational dartings through memory. From the slag heap of the junkie lifestyle, she manages to spin literary gold.”—Kirkus Reviews

DEBUT AUTHORS
THREE STUNNING DEBUT COLLECTIONS, THREE RINGING ENDORSEMENTS FOR THE STATE OF MODERN FICTION There are times when a piece of writing strikes us so deeply that we are reminded of why it is we read in the first place. With their debut collections, David James Poissant, Claire Vaye Watkins, and Adam Haslett presented the world with stories of immense import. Anyone who cares about fiction cannot help but be buoyed by the arrival of these exciting new voices. The Heaven of Animals David James Poissant | Performed by various narrators CD $77.75 $38.88 | eAudio $70.00 $35.00 From two friends racing to save the life of an alligator in “Lizard Man” to a girl helping her boyfriend face his greatest fears in “The End of Aaron,” from a man who stalks death on an Atlanta street corner to a brother’s surprise at the surreal, improbable beauty of a late night encounter with a wolf, Poissant creates worlds that shine with honesty and dark complexity, but also with a profound compassion. These are stories hell-bent on hope.
“Poissant’s work has been compared to Anton Chekhov, Raymond Carver and George Saunders, so it goes without saying that his debut short-stories collection is something special.”—New York Post Battleborn Claire Vaye Watkins | Performed by various narrators CD $102.75 $51.38 | eAudio $92.00 $46.00 —Winner of the 2012 Story Prize — Recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters 2013 Rosenthal Family Foundation Award — Named one of the National Book Foundation’s “5 Under 35” fiction writers of 2012
— Winner of New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award —NPR Best Short Story Collection — A Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, and Time Out New York Best Book of the Year
Like the work of Cormac McCarthy, Denis Johnson, Richard Ford, and Annie Proulx, Battleborn represents a near-perfect confluence of sensibility and setting, and the introduction of an exceptionally powerful and original literary voice. In each of these 10 unforgettable stories, Claire Vaye Watkins writes her way fearlessly into the mythology of the American West, utterly reimagining it. Her characters orbit around the region’s vast spaces, winning redemption despite—and often because of—the hardship and violence they endure. You Are Not a Stranger Here Adam Haslett | Performed by various narrators CD $72.75 $36.38 | eAudio $65.00 $32.50 —Pulitzer Prize finalist —National Book Award finalist
—Winner of the PEN/Malamud Award —One of Time magazine’s 5 Best Books of the Year
An elderly inventor, burning with manic creativity, tries to reconcile with his estranged gay son. A bereaved boy draws a thuggish classmate into a relationship of escalating guilt and violence. A genteel middle-aged woman, a long-time resident of a psychiatric hospital, becomes the confidante of a lovelorn teenaged volunteer. Told with Chekhovian restraint and compassion, and conveying both the sorrow of life and the courage with which people rise to meet it, You Are Not a Stranger Here is a triumph of storytelling.
